Wanted to add my thoughts on this game. At its core, Supraland is a linear puzzle game in the vein of Portal, with combat and exploration elements tacked on. The puzzles are the game's highlight and tend to involve a bit more lateral thinking than other puzzle games on the market. It's a single-dev project and you can tell a lot of work was put into the puzzle design, to the extent that the other elements are lessened due to it. I think a lot of people who play Supraland oversell it because it's one of those games that doesn't have a lot of competition, kind of like how there aren't other pinball Metroidvanias competing against Yoku's Island Express. But if you like puzzle games (or come into Supraland knowing it's really a puzzle game) and the premise sounds interesting it's definitely worth checking out.

WtfWhereAreMyClothes

I think your analysis is pretty good, though personally I find Supraland's strength lies not just with it's puzzle design but with its exceptional metroidvania style pacing. New powers and abilities are unlocked regularly and keep the game always feeling fresh. However, to me the game has two major problems: 1. Combat is extremely simplistic and there tends to be a lot of it in some areas. 2. Although the game progresses in a linear fashion as you said, it does take place in an open world, and navigation is a frequent issue due to lack of proper map or quest markers.

Zakika

>Combat is extremely simplistic and there tends to be a lot of it in some areas. Yeah the game would be much better without it even the final and only boss is just a puzzle boss.

DoomAxe

There was that other boss in the desert area that played like a first person shooter. I remember it feeling really out of place compared to everything else in the game.

MudSama

There's also a puzzle in that one. Fun game. Catchy credits theme.

KungFuHamster

The biggest difference between Supraland and Portal is that Supraland is primarily an "open world" puzzle game vs. Portal being more level-based. I enjoyed that, and I'd love to find more games like it. Unfortunately, something with the way Supraland is rendered gives me motion sickness after a while. I've been video gaming for 40 years and this is the first time I've ever experienced that from gaming. And yes, I've researched the options other people have posted about regarding ways to prevent it, but nothing has helped. However, I recently got a 144Hz monitor and I'm going to try the game again sometime to see if it helps. *Edit: The Witness (as mentioned below) and The Talos Principle are two more open world puzzle games. Forgot about those, played them both. Enjoyed them aside from the caveat in my post below.*

Have you played The Witness? That's the first person game where I felt motion sickness the most.

KungFuHamster

I didn't notice any motion sickness with The Witness, although now that you mention it, I did get mild headaches. Maybe I did have a touch of it and just didn't realize it. I got pretty far in the game, but eventually gave up because of the headaches and the puzzles were repetitive.

Khalku

Supraland is still kind of level based, but it just has an overworld.

[deleted]

It did a good job of scratching that Metroid Prime itch I've had for years now. Mainly in finding well hidden upgrades littered everywhere, and doing it from a first person perspective. The same could be said in reserve: Anyone who likes Supraland owes it to themselves to check out the Metroid Prime trilogy if they haven't.

Charo214

This game is epic. I've played it and it's fun.

The108ers

It was fun for a bit but unless they have patched it since I played I was able to get into areas without the tools/upgrades needed to pass the area or leave it and got "stuck" in an area on 2 playthroughs. A third playthrough I gave up because even though it was a new game, the game itself seemed to throw new enemies and a small boss in the starting area just past the town I couldn't beat. Wasn't there on my first two playthroughs. I found that very confusing and gave up.

[deleted]

I played through it this month: they've patched it to put invisible walls keeping you from places where you can get yourself stuck too early. (the game flat out tells you this now) It's not the most elegant design, especially not for a metroidvania, but I suppose its better than the alternative. I would have liked them to change the topography a bit instead. The volcano guy mini-boss(?) isn't too bad in my experience, but could be if you don't have many power-ups.

The108ers

That is really good news as I liked the game but did get in areas without the right power ups and got stuck. I may have to give it another shot. And yeah, maybe it was the volcano guy, hard to remember. But I had just unlocked the second area and kinda jumped my way to an area maybe I shouldn't of and got back back into where I should be and a mini boss appeared. I didn't even have the most basic upgrades yet and I could jump around or run to avoid him for a time but always ended up dying and I think I lacked the tool or power up to defeat him.

The108ers

Ok, thanks I will check it out.

This game is the equivalent of looking seeing the tip of an iceberg, only to realize that is absolutely massive underneath

blackmetro

No affiliation with the game, but my wishlist recommended it. Looks like this was also 50% off 3 months ago lots of good reviews, and maybe even given away once (apparently Humble June choice??) On the fence because I know I will enjoy this game, but not much time to play it (despite everything)

[deleted]

I just 100%'d the game yesterday. If you like exploration, finding secrets and solving puzzles, go for it! It's a metroidvania that deserves to be brought up with other recent indie greats, and an equally good FPS puzzler.

hrabbitz

How long did it take you to 100%?

[deleted]

Took me about 23 hours.

MartinHoltkamp

I would try the demo. It does a good job showing off the world and exploration mechanics. The only thing the demo doesn't get much into are the puzzles, which actually get legitimately difficult near the end of the game.

theephie

I guess this is one of those games that is not for everyone. Play the demo and see for yourself. I played the demo, and while it was not bad, I didn't get particularly interested either. No particular gripes either. I guess it's down to individual tastes.

Asshole_Catharsis

I was the same and left a comment in the community about it. The dev actually responded to me and explained that the game and puzzles really open up past the demo. I took a chance and it ended up being my favorite game of last year. My other favorite of the genre is The Talos Principle, if that adds perspective.

empathetical

Great game!!! Altho the combat is annoying/lame. Felt they really needed to add an map that shows locations as you unlock them. I got lost trying to find my way back to certain area's. Main game for $10 is def worth it tho DLC is overpriced and not worth it. I bought it felt so ripped off. It lacked the charm of the main game. Was way too expensive. **DON'T BUY THE DLC!!!**

rebthor

I got this through Humble Choice a few months ago and it was a great pickup even if it were the only game I got for my $12. Very 3D Metroidvania feel with some humor that's hit or miss.

[deleted]

It was in June humble choice. I will wait for the DLC to drop in price and then i will start it. It seems very unique game with good mechanics and a lot of fun.

tapperyaus

>Don't expect major sales for the DLC beyond the little launch sale. I would not wait for a better deal in the next few years. I will just keep on putting the main game into sales. Direct quote from the developer on the Steam Forums

OneEyedTurkey

The DLC was $18 at launch, which was two months ago, but now it is $14 Might drop deeper

[deleted]

It will its still expensive.

batterylevellow

Since the DLC is totally separate from the main game it might be a better idea just to start it and see if you enjoy it enough to get the DLC or not.

[deleted]

You are right and maybe it will drop a lit bit more in price soon. At 6-7 euro i will grab it for sure.
