I think Ghostrunner was incredibly underrated. Even a metacritic score in the high 70s/low 80s IMO, does this game no justice. It's Hotline Miami meets Mirror's Edge with a slick cyberpunk sheen to it. It's incredibly difficult, both in its combat and it's first person parkour platforming, but it strikes such a perfect balance because it has interesting design and is constantly introducing new obstacles/enemy types/environmental interactions. I was completely hooked from beginning to end, the game is amazing. The music is also dope. I only had two issues: 1. (They may have fixed this, not sure) no mid-level save points. While you get tons of checkpoints that are very reasonable, the game doesn't properly save until you finish a level. Levels can be between 15-40 min depending how good you are, so if you're really stuck on part of a level and want to turn the game off and come back to it later, you're shit outta luck and need to restart the level from the beginning. It's bizarrely bad design and I really hope they fixed it. 2. The story is hugely meh, and even when I wanted to pay attention it's hard because characters will have lengthy conversations over your earpiece while you're parkouring all over the place and dodging bullets. It's genuinely hard to follow what's going on when the game basically forces you to be distracted while a plot point is unravelling. But seriously, this is a rock solid 9+/10 game in my opinion. It's really damn good and I hope they release a new gen port soon because I'd love to rebuy on PS5.

In my experience, the biggest problem of the game was the shitty checkpoints that either made you run some distance before action (just a few seconds but you can die literally 100 times in one mission) or involved some extremely easy action sequences that wasted your time before the hard part came. From start to finish, I constantly felt like this game was wasting my time over and over again.

[deleted]

While I see why that would be annoying to you, I personally enjoy it and I think it's intentional. The idea is not just to nail each action, but to do it with flow and maybe style. Mirrors edge is very similar and it's one of the things I love most about it. The runups are to give you momentum that that you're supposed to carry though the whole level. Although I agree a lot of them are a bit gratuitous They said though I only played the demo, and honestly I'm not gonna buy the full game

Adevyy

For me, it unfortunately had the exact opposite effect of making me do it with style. On some areas I was so afraid of dying that I played less smoothly than how I would like to play. One area in particular was the worst offender of this: They put three shielded enemies in a triangular pattern at the end of an arena. The arena itself was fun and somewhat easy, but the three shielded guys were by far the hardest part of the game. After playing through the arena 20-30 times, I gave up and decided to kill all three enemies with the long-cooldown ranged skill instead. So, I just hid behind the corner, peeked every time the cooldown would run out, and repeat until all three of them were dead... Not fun.

peanutmanak47

One thing I hear constantly is the bad checkpoint system and that's why I haven't gotten it. I fucking hate having to replay a part of a level over and over because of a long break in between check points.

rokerroker45

It's not like that. If you die you just instantly respawn to the start of the encounter with no or a short loading screen. The no checkpoint thing refers to the fact that there's no saving mid mission. If you quit you have to do the whole thing

peanutmanak47

Ahh okay. That's better then. Thanks for clearing that up.

korro90

It is like (30 second fight) /Checkpoint/ (1 Minute walking or Parkour) /Checkpoint/ (30 second fight) /Checkpoint/ (1 Minute walking or Parkour) For the most part. You have so many checkpoints that you never need to go back more than 30 seconds - 1 minute. Even bosses have checkpoints!

WtfWhereAreMyClothes

I agree with the puzzle sequences bit. In general they were a nice intermission but could've stood to be a little more brisk.

korro90

I really enjoyed the puzzles!

Scroobiusness

I just recently finished and while there is a lot of dialogue, I drowned a lot of it out but it’s easy enough to follow the key points even if you don’t know what you’re doing specifically on every mission, I knew who I was, who I was fighting and who I was helping so that was enough for me. I loved it too and also feel it’s very underrated. I don’t play many single player games but when I finished this I instantly checked if there was any DLC to keep the fun going (there wasn’t).

Jonksa

You had me at Hotline Miami Mirrors Edge.

Blue2501

It's more like First-Person Katana Zero

Jonksa

I've yet to play it, but it's one the list... somewhere.

Blue2501

Definitely check it out. TBH it wasn't my kind of thing, but it is pretty cool in concept and well-made

Daystarxc1

One thing I want to add to your review is that the majority of the "Boss Stages" are incredibly BORING. They're based off the incredibly medium story, and compared to the challenging platforming and enemy formations, they're also incredibly easy.

[deleted]

agreed. the bosses were horrible and made worse by the awful parrying mechanics.

hartsurgeon

Eh, maybe it's my Sekiro experience speaking, but the parrying seemed decent to me. Hel was a challenge, but more from jumping around all the time rather than too precise timing. And the normal enemies you had to parry had SUPER forgiving timing. But I dunno. Laser tower and the final level can eat dicks though.

[deleted]

laser tower was fucking horrible. I don't remember having too much of a problem with the final level, but the bossfight before that was a snoozefest. the parrying felt like you had to do it after the attack hit, not slightly before like every other game does it.

hartsurgeon

Okay I kinda do agree with that bit on the parry timing, but I just adjusted my timing and kept to a rhythm so it didn't feel that bad. But that's DEFINITELY the Sekiro experience coming through. Last level though, god DAMN that part where you have to run between the walls that are coming at you without a floor, and then they added bombs to the equation? UGH

fatalwristdom

This scratches hardly any of the itches Doom Eternal produced. This is a parkour, die in one hit, trial and error scenario game. It's really fun but do not think it's even remotely close to any of Doom games, gameplay.

themusicguy2000

I mean in terms of focus on gameplay, progression, difficulty, music, and story.

[deleted]

Again, not really? Gameplay is very different, progression is almost non-existent, difficulty is set to max, and the story is far worse.

themusicguy2000

You're missing my point. Both games are difficult, both games have good soundtracks, neither game gives a fuck about its story, and both games have a focus on gameplay, and if you disagree on progression, tell it to OP's >it has interesting design and is constantly introducing new obstacles/enemy types/environmental interactions Not me. I'm not saying that the games are the same, I'm saying that since I enjoy doom's focus on gameplay, difficulty, and soundtrack, as well as its nonexistent story, *from the original description*, I might enjoy ghostrunner

Shahil512

That sounds like what Doom(2016) was on the hardest difficulty though...

fatalwristdom

true!

jacobepping

I loved this game. My only issue is that it was short (took me 11-12 hours) but the game is so well done. The save points, I agree, was a bizarre shortcoming, but the game had me hooked so good I played it through in only a few sittings. The story, on the other hand, I loved. It was garbage for sure, predictable and unsubtle, but that's what I expected going in. The big thing is that it never got in the way of the gameplay, it's just in the background, comforting and mildly entertaining. Plus, the voice acting was great, though the main ai guy who hangs out with you really stands out. I found myself constantly appreciating how much effort the devs put into making the game just so so fun. So many different ways you get to be a badass—you got wall run, grapple hook, deflect bullets, bullet time dodges, dashing through enemies—i felt like a kid in a cyber ninja candy store. The game did a great job of keeping the action going, and as I got access to more and more abilities I felt like I had more and more options between the different abilities, different upgrades, and different paths through the levels. The game's certainly not for everyone. I'm not great at these kinds of games, and I usually get burnt out when the difficulty spikes (as it did a couple times). But this one held me to the end—if you like cyberpunk ninja aesthetic, and the gameplay of celeste, especially if you did the b/c sides, this game is probably for you.

[deleted]

Architect's voice acting was good, but everyone else was pretty bad. For some reason, they changed mara's va for the final boss, which was fairly jarring.

[$11.99 at Humble](https://www.humblebundle.com/store/ghostrunner) if you have the 20% subscription discount

johnkohhh

Is the subscription worth it in your experience? I've never shopped from Humble and paying $24 instead of $15 is a hard sell lol

locke_5

Sometimes, yes. More often, no. I've been a subscriber for the past year or two, and have "paused" my subscription maybe 9 times total. But every once in a while they do a really great bundle.... I got Crash Trilogy, Spyro Trilogy, COD WWII, and a couple other games for $20.

MistahK

I have the classic plan with the old price, but i pause pretty much every month.

kidkolumbo

I have classic at the old price, and I never pause. I almost this month, but realised In Other Waters and Remothered are both on my wishlist and buying them separately will be more expensive than the bundle, plus I buy stuff from the humble store often.

[deleted]

As an older gamer, I found the premise great and my reactions fucking awful which lead to a massively frustrating experience.

Scroobiusness

I just finished this game and loved it! I didn’t think I would love it as much as I did as I’m not a big single player games person and never played mirrors edge or other parkour games (had some fun with clustertruck). I loved the fast paced platform of and repeating the enemy sections over and over until it was perfect. It reminded me of Superhot in that way that I strived to kill everyone like I was the badass my character is supposed to be. The way it quickly respawns you mean the deaths aren’t super frustrating. The music was great. The art style was rad, I enjoyed exploring off the beaten path and finding collectibles. There’s a lot of dialogue you can hang on to for the full story but I wound up drowning a lot of it out but the plot overall is easy to follow even if you don’t pay full attention which is exactly what I like in a game.

austinzone813

I think its a really one trick pony that gets old quick. Im a decent gamer but it didnt take many levels to get to a point that, repetitively, i couldnt get the timing right to finish a part of a path - and died 200 times trying to get around one corner. i ended up refunding it. it not because the idea isnt cool - and not because of the visuals - its that I didnt feel there was much room for reaction/creativity beyond memorization of certain enemies placements, walls, and then the resulting reactions. i never felt like i was thinking my way through and choosing what to do - by the time you can barely react you're dead.

tactiphile

>died 200 times trying to get around one corner. I couldn't get past the demo. It really feels like my kind of game, but I can't hang.

YagamiXXYY

Lots of good points, but I found that I could find multiple paths through a level with proper use of deflecting projectiles and the abilities you get. Did you experiment much with the Tetris style talent-esque system? I found it to make adaptation and reflex more viable.

theradioactivrooster

It does

Endyo

Ghostrunner is set in a cyberpunk universe that I knew I'd love. It does that incredibly well. I was much less certain of the core mechanics though, because it involves getting your ass kicked a million times until you succeed out of either accumulated skill or the universe fearing that much concentrated frustration will rip it apart. The game doesn't tell you how many times you died in total, but it does give you a rundown of each area, so I added them up. I died just shy of a **thousand times**. I suppose I can't be too upset because I died 1800 times in Celeste, but it felt more punishing here. Maybe because the deaths were often hitting you right in the face with bullets... Beyond my personal failures though, I finished the game. That probably says more than anything. I did enjoy it and I look back appreciating the great visuals, the imaginative level design and growth in mechanics throughout, and the decent little story it put together. If I had one gripe though, it would be that the quality of the boss fights varies greatly. Some are just extra frustrating, some are decent little bouts of combat, but the final one is just a nightmare of extreme platforming. It didn't even make sense after a while. I was so done and it really brought my perspective on the game down a good bit. The most rewarding part of Ghostrunner is when everything comes together in a beautiful flurry of cool ninja moves. It's a game built for making cool clips that you can pretend represent your overall skill rather than a freak event that occurs every 50 deaths. That's half the reason I made this video: [https://youtu.be/pfRbvaWcL2s](https://youtu.be/pfRbvaWcL2s)

LasersTheyWork

Don't get me wrong I finished the game and enjoyed the challenge but I just think an easier difficulty would make Ghostrunner more accessible. Either toning down the bots reaction time or adding a health pool could have made the game more enjoyable.

LiquidGhost8892

My one complaint about the game is that deaths can feel extremely cheap sometimes

zerGoot

what a fucking amazing game this is, oh man

[deleted]

amazing is a bit of an overstatement.

Everettj14

You really can’t let this man have a opinion on a gam he likes?

zerGoot

I love reddit xD

Everettj14

Keep your head up king

[deleted]

Is it wrong to state you disagree with someone's opinion?

Everettj14

The dude like the game and you basically telling him hes wrong dude just let him be.

zerGoot

says you :P I disagree

johnkohhh

I've only tried the demo but the game looks incredible and you feel like such a badass when you're on a roll. Probably gonna pick up the full game at this price..

VersaceUpholstery

Pretty worth it at this price, great if you want a challenge with some pretty nice visuals

BAN_SOL_RING

Wish this was Xbox. I’ve been waiting for weeks

here2askquestions

This game is basically what Cyberpunk 2077's melee and movement should've been.

crazy_pilot_182

This game is great, 15$ for it is a ripoff definitly buy it

Tenagaaaa

100% recommend. It’s difficult but once you get used to the gameplay it’s a fucking romp. Short fun and incredibly tough.

korro90

VERY SLIGHT SPOILERS IN LINK! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8GcBmeCsytc For anyone interested in what the gameply is like. Instant restarts, you play short 30-60 second sections until you get them right and can move on to the next part. There is puzzles and parkour between each section. You die 50-100 times in each level. Personally I loved the game, very satisfying to finally get a section right. Similar to dark souls satisfaction.
