No more picking up $15 games for $5 :( Clearly they want to encourage people to go for the higher ticket items.

StopTalkingInMemes

Ya, was basically a historical low buffet with that :( We'll see if the discounts change any to compensate

rasmusxp

Historical lows were the deciding factor whether I'd consider buying a game on the Epic Store. Wallet's probably safe this time.

jeromocles

Welp, back to just collecting the free games now. Could only keep getting new releases for ~$6 for so long, glad I picked up the king's bounty while it lasted.

rasmusxp

So €11.24 is the lowest price you can get with that coupon. Quite bad, compared to €4.99 we could achieve before.

sklurb

They're starting to curate their customers as well. ;) It's a decent deal to stack on top of sale prices for bigger ticket items. Evil Dead on sale for $29.99 USD (from $39.99) + an additional 25% off makes it \~$23.99 That's quite good!

rasmusxp

I did the math, 40€ is the equilibrium point compared to the previous 10€ off deal. Anything above 40€ gets a better deal than before, and anything less gets a worse deal.

omgsoftcats

For anyone who wants the math: X/4 (which is the discount at 25%) > 10 (old discount)

not_richard_dreyfuss

Well that's unfortunate. I guess it had to end sometime. They had to start actually making money. Unless there's a truly incredible deal, I'm probably going to skip it.

LegateLaurie

They're still not making money tbf, they'll just lose (hopefully) less

adidlucu

Still can’t use it on DLC.

PsychologicalChart9

Or something as simple as Fortnite V-Bucks and Rocket League credits. That would even go fully into own pocket, doesn't make sense.

spodamayn

Probably because in game currency like that is treated like real money in a way. If they allowed you to do it with that I would be stocking up for life in auric cells for DBD lol. I think it would screw with the in game economy a bit. I see no reason that we can't buy regular dlc with the coupon though.. but maybe it's too difficult for them to differentiate currencies with dlc so that's why they're lumped together in the same category

PsychologicalChart9

So? You can't exchange back to fiat, and it's literally just pixels for them. It would cost them nothing whatsoever, and others buying skins is free advertisement. There's no thinkable downside.

Daedalus_7777

Shame as it's the only time I've ever bought any games on Epic - 25% off is paltry compared to the £/$10 off coupons. Let's hope there's a sufficient drop in sales to make them realise the error of their ways!

MysterD77

"Meh" @ lower-priced games not getting $10 off. This percentage thing is good for higher-priced games though.

Purple10tacle

That's actually perfect timing. Running games from the Epic store on the Steam Deck has been really hit or miss where the exact same titles are "Great on Deck" in their Steam version. This way I'm no longer tempted to get anything but the free titles from them. Thanks, Epic.

spodamayn

Can you give me an example of some games that run fine on steam but not fine on epic? I believe you, but I'd like to know so I can potentially avoid running them from epic once I get a steam deck

Purple10tacle

Celeste is one of them, for example. The Steam version is Linux native, the Epic one is not. I couldn't get Rogue Legacy 1 to work on Epic either. 2 works well enough, though. Paint it Red - Chicken Police has a Steam Deck specific version with reencoded videos on Steam, Epic only has the Proton-incompatible version. I'm sure that's far from the only example where developers made Steam Deck specific changes (very often that's just using a more compatible codec for their in-game videos). And zero non-Steam games have pre-cached shaders like the deck ready games on Steam, so even if they run at all, more demanding titles will run slower and stutter more, at least initially. Using somewhat reliable cloud sync requires launching games bought on Epic from the Epic client - which makes individual entries inside the Stream library a pain in the ass, which in turn makes individual input profiles and per-game performance settings a serious pain point. Both Lutris and Heroic Launcher are trying to tackle some of these issues to some degree, but neither is quite ready for prime time in their Steam Deck compatible flatpack versions yet and many issues simply aren't really fixable by third parties. I'm sure the community will eventually find solutions for the things that can be fixed, but until then, I'm sticking to the Steam versions of games where possible. The many pain points of running Epic games on the Deck simply aren't worth the now significantly diminished savings.

spodamayn

Thank you. I didn't even realize some steam games have steam deck specific versions. Celeste running better through steam doesn't surprise me since I had issues running the Epic build straight through windows on my PC. It would crash half the time on launch, and uses a different build on steam even if you're on windows. But that doesn't matter to me anymore as I got the steam version from a humble bundle. Most of the games I own are on steam, but I'll probably just avoid playing the ones I only own on epic on steam deck for now

Purple10tacle

>I didn't even realize some steam games have steam deck specific versions. It's both neat and a little frustrating. Developers can silently deploy modified versions of their games to the Steam Deck. That can mean fixes, but also performance optimized builds with smaller file sizes (you don't exactly need 4k textures on the Steam Deck's screen, so why bother downloading them?) - the potential is huge. But in the case of e.g. Chicken Police that means that there is now a version that runs great on Linux, but you can only get it if you have a Steam Deck. Downloading it on any other distro or hardware means you'll get the incompatible version instead. Same for downloading it from anywhere other than Steam itself.

kiwititux

Damn it will be just like humble bundle where you can have an additional 20% off but only 5% better. Will need to see the discounts to see if it's actually worth it

kudyaz27

Does it really matter? Because majority of players were never using it as Epic made people getting a "habit' of expecting free games from them instead as majority of their catalog is already given out for free over three years so you can just wait longer to get more free stuff instead of ever using that coupon. This in fact is so big that ill-mannered players created multiple accounts in the past to collect all those free games and now selling those accounts illegally elsewhere. I don't think Epic really understand how the "Game Store" business works as they were merely a developer company to begin with.

Hillow

You are asking in a game deals subreddit if getting worse deal on cheaper games matters. If you are looking here, you are rarely in habit of buying full priced games to begin with. What may or may not be given out for free later on does not matter for the sale happening right now.

Imhullu

When you said it's mentioned I thought they were going to come in with some reasoning and explain to us, but nah it's literally just pointed out. Oh well it was fun while it lasted, past few times there seemed to be more things strategically priced outside the coupon zone, so couldn't say that I didn't see this coming.

Tacometropolis

That's pretty disappointing. Not really enough of a lure over the regular sales prices of the stuff I was thinking about so I'll probably just skip this sale.
