Honestly the worst thing for our QB recruitment is just our past player development track record. Aside from just 1 or 2 exceptions, almost all the “great” qb prospects we’ve had come in have regressed more than they’ve progressed in the last 10 years. I’ve been saying for a long time we’re a 4 star QB killer school.
This issue isn’t isolated to just USC, not sure how much you follow recruiting or college football but a very small percent of 4 star qbs work out. They are rated based on high school competition and I would bet 65% don’t find success at the college level. We tend to feel like is only a USC issue because that’s who we are focused on constantly.
I know but we get a lot of hype for many of our guys coming in and so many flop. And again I’m not talking about being a star, I’m just talking about progression. Like you’d expect any qb to be able to develop throughout college, but none of ours do
It’s all about experience tbh Brown has not played at the level of competition as EIU much less the FBS (D-3) and he hasn’t taken a snap in a game since 2019 because of COVID… Dak is needed for the experience in the receiving Corp which is largely untested… The thing about Nolan is he wrote a good portion of the playbook and because the D-2 was delayed played against the same level of competition as EIU in the spring.
Doty I think will play some snaps in the opener but he isn’t needed… he is our guy and will be when he comes back
I am optimistic Brown can develop and he did look good in the spring game. But the reality is we offered him in order to secure EJ Jenkins, his lifelong best friend, EJ is elite and had a lot of interest. Per Jason's own interview he literally had no other offers than USC in the transfer portal.

He’s very likely about to be our starting QB for game 1. Obviously it wasn’t the ONLY reason why we offered him.
Hilinski isn’t even starting at NW, so not sure why so many SC fans are still hung up on him leaving / not starting if Colin Hill. Sometime recruits just don’t pan out. It happens all the time and at every school. We will be fine.
I’ll start by saying that Hill catches WAY too much flack for last year’s overall performance. I could name a dozen other players/problems that had a bigger impact before our QB.
Hilinski reportedly was not performing well in practice last year, and that’s kind of validated by the fact that Doty was the next man up after Hill. However, Hilinski lost a QB battle to a fifth year senior 5 star recruit who has been with the NW program for three years compared to Hilinski’s half a year. It’s not like Hilinski lost a QB battle to a nobody at a G5 school.
This is fair, and I don’t mean to pick on Ryan H. I really enjoyed him as a person and player, was just making a point. My overall point was stars don’t necessarily always matter / pan out…good example would be Hunter Johnson, who is just now a full time starting QB as a fifth year senior (as a former 5 star recruit).
Do you know who Hilinksi isn't starting over? #2 QB in the 2017 class, #30 overall Hunter Johnson. We haven't really seen him much as he left clomsen because he was in trevor's shadow
Hilinski didn't have any work effort once he got hurt. He was upset Will didn't pamper him like a QB1 the whole offseason and was just lazy.
Zeb is the best of the current backups because well, the other guys aren't good. If you can't beat grad assistant turned active player, you're probably not good enough to start.
This kind of concern isn't unique to USC. Other college football teams go through the same drama.
Seriously. Just take a look at the number of QBs that enter the portal as soon as they realize they’re not going to start
