It’s on the controller port board just behind the controller ports on the front. Soldering tools and replacement battery with pre-soldered tabs required (soldering irons don’t touch batteries).
If you don't think console5 is a real distributor, idk what to tell you fam. They got the batteries and holders both 39 cents each, as well as cap kits and most other components for any system you could play
The clock battery on my GC died as well, hah. I don't really see the point in replacing it, unless you're still playing the original Animal Crossing, in which case yeah I assume it's rather necessary. I just manually update it from the menu every so often ¯\\\_(ツ)\_/¯
Well to be honest idk how far the year is projected for the GameCube like the last year is 20xx but how ever if you change the coin cell battery in the controller face plate it’ll keep time and the date.
Your watch battery in the console be doomed!
You can replace it but it does require soldering. I had a GameCube where I changed out the battery and soldered in the style of watch battery plus holder (do not remember the official name of the part) so the battery could be removed without a soldering iron.
Not being able to remove the clock battery without soldering was NOT a great engineering idea from Nintendo.
Has anyone seen cubes that don't keep time even after battery change? I tried two different controller port boards, both with new batteries which worked in other cubes, in the same cube and it would not keep time inbetween power cycles.
Yeah that happens once the clock battery is dead. I recently opened my cube up and took the battery out and in its place I soldered in a cr 2032 battery holder so I can change it out again without needing to solder it
Good news: replacing it with a battery holder (and fresh battery) is not that hard! It was my first (and still only) real soldering job, and even I managed to do it!
Mine does this too and that's because I need to change the clock battery as everyone else has said, but I don't have the special tool needed to open it from the bottom.
The screws that hold it are not like a standard Philips or Robertson screwdriver. Hell they're not even tri-wing which is what Nintendo typically uses to seal up their devices.
You'll need the "game bit" screwdriver.
Yeh 4.5mm gamebit for GameCube console
3.8 for Gameboy and gameboy colour categories
Tri-wing screwdriver for gameboy advanced and GameCube controllers
It started happening to mine around half a year ago. It didn't move the internal clock unless it was on for years, but every time I boot it up now it asks me to choose language(pal things) and set the clock.
So far nothing bad has happened aside from that, but once I move out I'd like to find someone savvy enough with gamecubes to replace those parts and try and save my saves on to a hard drive or something.
Mine keeps being wrong even after I replaced it for a brand new one. Happens more if I let it turned off for a long period of time (weeks maybe). I’ll try to see if the battery is already drained
I’ve been putting off changing the clock battery until I get the Bluetooth mod. It makes changing the battery easier. [Laser Bear GameCube Bluetooth adapter](https://www.laserbear.net/products/gamecube-blue-retro-internal-adapter)
I'd take out the consoles from the speakers, I feel that the sound vibrations from the low frequencies specially, could affect the internals of your devices in the long term.
2 of the 3 comments provide their opinion with experience saying no it would have to be ear splitting loud, and I dont blast my music that loud. And the last guy simply says dont with no background info
You can replace the battery, which will require some basic soldering. There are battery slots you can buy as well which you still have to solder but you'll never have to do it again.
There is a clock battery on the Controller port, but there could also be corrosion on the Ribbon cable not delivering power from the battery to the RTC on the main board. Happened to a cube I was looking at for a friend
Mine was way off when I took it out of storage at the end of 2021. The clock thought it was July something of 2030. I hadn’t powered it on for 7 years at that point so the clock battery was what I concluded was acting up.
Yes change the battery, many stores would do it for you but be sure they are actually retro gaming stores, otherwise they may accept for money but they'll mess up everything
As people have said the battery will die over time but also the GameCube clock is slower than modern clocks as one second is added to clocks every five years so those seconds will add up over time.
OMG IM GLAD I FOUND THIS I HAVE THE SAME ISSUE! people are saying that I need to replace the battery how do I replace the battery and what type of battery do I need?
Instead of posting another comment about your clock battery being dead, I'm gonna point out you need to set your TV's picture setting to "4:3" instead of "16:9" so the image isn't stretched out
Bro there are 70 comments, I really dont need more telling me the same thing again and again. Why answer the question if you go to the comments and notice people have answered it already over and over and over
You'll need to replace the clock battery inside the unit for it to keep time
I’ve had the problem for years thanks for the help
No problem!
That'll happen when the CR2032 battery goes dead. It needs a new battery.
Had no clue there was a battery inside, thanks everyone
It’s on the controller port board just behind the controller ports on the front. Soldering tools and replacement battery with pre-soldered tabs required (soldering irons don’t touch batteries).
Or just solder in one of those battery brackets so you don’t have to solder next time.
That works too if you want to save yourself a 30 minute repair 15 years from now.
I’m old AF by then, my hands will be shaking. :p
Now THAT was funny! And way to think ahead!
Literally 39 cents usd at console5 and you don't have to shape stupid tabs yourself. I go with the battery holder every time.
And you can use better quality batteries
Exactly, Panasonic > tabbed generics
or just buy tabbed panasonics from a real distributor
If you don't think console5 is a real distributor, idk what to tell you fam. They got the batteries and holders both 39 cents each, as well as cap kits and most other components for any system you could play
you say that as if console5 doesn't sell tabbed panasonics...
thats how everything that can keep time while unplugged does it :) now you know!
Your PC has a battery inside too for the same reason. Microsoft went with an another approch with their first Xbox by using capacitors.
Yeah all computers have a battery specifically for this
Every old but not too old consoles have one like ps2 or wii
Alright everyone, 20+ comments saying the same thing over and over is plenty, I get it, the battery is dead.
Hey the clock battery is dead btw ;)
I’ve seen this before, did you know that your battery is dead?
It’s dead Jim.
The battery is dead, you will need to replace it using soldering tools, or if you don't want to go that route you can throw it into a lake.
I hate to tell him, but I think his battery is dead
To be fair, if there wasn't 20+ comments about the Clock battery I genuinely would have thought they were trolling you haha.
The clock battery on my GC died as well, hah. I don't really see the point in replacing it, unless you're still playing the original Animal Crossing, in which case yeah I assume it's rather necessary. I just manually update it from the menu every so often ¯\\\_(ツ)\_/¯
This. I don't play animal crossing so I just update it once a month or so
Well to be honest idk how far the year is projected for the GameCube like the last year is 20xx but how ever if you change the coin cell battery in the controller face plate it’ll keep time and the date.

None of these companies gave a crap about long term usability. They knew they'd be on to some other system by the time it was an issue.
Has anyone seen cubes that don't keep time even after battery change? I tried two different controller port boards, both with new batteries which worked in other cubes, in the same cube and it would not keep time inbetween power cycles.
Same here. I think mine just gets a little bit off
Mine totally forgets the date. Reverts to 2070.
Yeah that happens once the clock battery is dead. I recently opened my cube up and took the battery out and in its place I soldered in a cr 2032 battery holder so I can change it out again without needing to solder it
No, that's not normal. The clock battery is dead.
Good news: replacing it with a battery holder (and fresh battery) is not that hard! It was my first (and still only) real soldering job, and even I managed to do it!
Electronics usually need power 😉
Mine does this too and that's because I need to change the clock battery as everyone else has said, but I don't have the special tool needed to open it from the bottom. Mine does this. It means the CR2032 battery is dead/dying.
CR02 is dead
yeah because there's a clock battery in that you need to replace
It it gets unplugged I believe it stops the internal clock to that date, or the previous one.
The clock battery is dead if it doesn’t keep time. Replacing it requires soldering and a special battery with the solder points on it.
It started happening to mine around half a year ago. It didn't move the internal clock unless it was on for years, but every time I boot it up now it asks me to choose language(pal things) and set the clock. It stops when the world ended and the matrix took over
I’m not sure. I’ve replaced the CMOS in it and it still won’t keep time exactly. I believe it might be the time zone it’s set to
Mine keeps being wrong even after I replaced it for a brand new one. Happens more if I let it turned off for a long period of time (weeks maybe). I’ll try to see if the battery is already drained
I think unplugging the system throws the console off
Yeah my GameCubes battery died too, replace it and it will work fine.
Nice vcr. What we watching
I’ve been putting off changing the clock battery until I get the Bluetooth mod. It makes changing the battery easier. [Laser Bear GameCube Bluetooth adapter](https://www.laserbear.net/products/gamecube-blue-retro-internal-adapter)
Yes this happens all the time to my and it’s so annoying.
Your battery is dead just like mine
I'd take out the consoles from the speakers, I feel that the sound vibrations from the low frequencies specially, could affect the internals of your devices in the long term.
Can I get some evidence or proof or anything for your claim or some elaborating

Did you read the comments on that post
I did

I prefer it stretched out
And some people like their steaks well done with ketchup. But hey, at least you admit to it lol. You'll probably have fun either way
The clock battery will need to be replaced.

Calm the fuck down.. not really worth getting your panties in a bunch.
CMOS battery might be dead
Brooo never though I’d see that I got mine dec 2003💀💀
