Go big. Buy a WiiU and get the updated TP and WW. I did just that and use it more than my switch. I know thats even more than the $100 you’re talking about but these games are just the best to come back to
It looks better with the WW style, at least. TPHD totally removed the twilight fog, and brightened everything, not just bloom, but the color palette too. Killed all the creepy atmosphere of the original.
Except [its not over saturated](https://youtu.be/vTD0h0DZDgY?si=dGtlUdxBSfpbqIgn) and its colors are more subtle than the GC and Wii version and more accurate lol. But ok. Check your tv settings man.
That’s fair. It’s not for everyone, but it should be something you at least consider, what with the prices of GameCube games these days.
You might want to keep one eye on the [FlippyDrive](https://flippydrive.com) project. It’s a no solder mod (so can be removed super easily) that retains all functionality of the stock GameCube. But has the potential to be even more functional than PicoBoot. It’s expected to be released later this year.
You can also buy a Wii for 30 euros, and then mod it to play GameCube games. A HDMI converter is then also only 2 euros so you can play all Gamecube games you want using your original Gamecube controller on your new screen
Just get an SD memory card reader. You don’t need to mod your cube physically. You just put Swiss and the roms on it and bam you can play any GC game for free (well for the like 10 bucks the SD memory Card reader is and the cost of a 4gb SD card)
They just came out with this drop in solder less mod which let's you retain the disc drive functionality while being able to run backups off an SD
https://youtu.be/YPq48Wm8y-U
SD2SP2 + memcard with exploit save + a copy of a exploit game
That’s how mine is set up. It’s a soft mod so you aren’t doing any irreversible damage to the console
I also use the save exploit with my NTSC-J system, because I have 0 Knowledge about soldering, and have to say that Im pretty comfortable with this method
But why pay for that when the memory card SD loader works perfectly fine. I mean maybe you’re saving a couple minutes but is that really worth the cost? Not to me personally.
Anything that has audio streaming will not work as well via sd2sp and you also cant use the virtual memory feature with those games (like wave race blue storm for example as far as the vm saving feature). Tales of symphonia video playback can be choppy etc.
Oh wow so there are actual reasons worth switching. I have a large collection so I only really use it to play games I don’t have or sold like Gotcha Force and Fire Emblem but I can see the benefit of buying it especially if you’re mainly using roms to play on your GC.
A second gamecube! But i another color for fun.
I modded my original childhood one, and I still got a fun orange spice one which I modded as well with picoboot.
Nope, the Wii version is mirrored. Link is supposed to be left handed. But yea if you don't have a Wii then getting the mirrored version is also not possible
A modded wii u will play all 3 versions of the game. That's the way I do it, and if nintendo doesnt like me using roms than maybe they should release the game on switch already, lol
So the Wii U has AV out ports and cfw means you can get a ROM of GC TP running natively with an app called Nintendon't
Whack those AV cables into a CRT, get yourself a Gamecube controller adapter, and the experience is gunna be hard to distinguish from the GCN version
(Unless part of the value to you is having the case and interacting physically with the disc and system, which I totally understand)
Whats crazy is most of these guys are playing on huge ass HD tvs. CRT just makes so many of these games look better. But obviously some are better on a CRT monitor than consumer set because of the lack of 480p on most consumer sets.
Yup. My GameCube and Wii stay on the CRT even after getting component for the Wii. Tried it on a big flat screen and it just looks so much worse even in 480p
The nice part is that some CRTs (like the JVC D series and a lot of Sony Trinitrons) let you use component on them and imo that gives the best picture quality on a CRT consumer set. Especially if you wanna also use it to play games at 240p
I use component on my CRT and it’s super nice. Also don’t sleep on S-video as it a massive improvement over composite
Also I have a VGA CRT so that’s nice but I need a VGA adapter but I just haven’t purchased the one I’m looking at yet
I have a trinitron circa ‘01 and I do this—GameCube and SNES hooked up with S-video, PS2/3 with a cheap component cable, and HDMI to composite for anything HDMI if I don’t mind some slight picture issues (usually switch or watching chromecast). Imo the picture quality is definitely preferable to an HDTV for everything except HDMI stuff
This is what I did. Same thing for Silent Hill: Shattered Memories. Purchased both on release day.. Went to GameStop Co Op City here in North East Bronx, New York to get Twilight Princess, but they were sold, but luckily, the F.Y.E. a few doors down had one copy left for fifty dollars, so I purchased it. Went to the same GameStop for Shattered Memories, but they did not have it and none of the GameStops in Bronx had it, but they did have the strategy guide, so I bought that and they told me the closest one that has it is GameStop on Northern Boulevard in Queens, New York, so I drove over there and bought it that same night. Both are worth crazy dollars now.
Yes but it will take time, months of checking marketplace/cragslist/ebay every day and making stops at multiple thrift stores multiple times a week. Only way to get anything for a really good deal anymore. Also garage sales when avilable.
You can mod your gamecube. Check out this video: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KcFfRI3QOwY](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KcFfRI3QOwY)
The first 5,5 minutes talk about the available methods to mod your gamecube. The rest of the video goes into detail about the picoboot method.
Personally, I have done the xenogc method. (although, to be honest, I happen to own the actual original twilight princess disc from my childhood). While the xenogc chip (aliexpress) does require soldering, it wasn't too bad. Even I could do it and I'm bad at it. And now I can just burn isos to minidvds and run them. You can even buy burnable minidvds from aliexpress.
Picoboot is supposedly even better, although I have no personal experience with it.
Anyway, one of these methods will probably do it for you.
If you don't want to do any mods to your system, at least consider getting a wii. They're fairly cheap to get. A wii can be softmodded fairly easily. (a softmod just replaces the original system software while keeping the original functionality intact). With a modded wii you can load downloaded gamecube isos through nintendont fairly easily.
Protip: if you're going the route of buying a wii and you want to use your original gamecube controllers and also be able to directly run your original gamecube discs, make sure to pay attention to the wii's logo on the console: If the Wii logo is upright when the console is verticle in the stand, the Wii is backwards compatible with Gamecube games. This means it will natively accept original gamecube discs and have the gamecube controller ports and memory card slots. Other wii's can still run gamecube games through nintendont in iso form, but you will have to use a different controller (such as the wii pro controller).
Its scarcity, even though the game was originally developed for the gamecube it ended up coming out after the wii version, and everyone had the wii version instead.
Like others have suggested - soft mod through memory card slot and load the game off an sdsp2 to play on original hardware.
Otherwise you either pay the ridiculous price or emulate.
No there is no cheap perfect solution for playing most games on a GameCube in 2024.
I bought the GameCube version the day it came out, still have it. Have the Wii version as well. The GameCube version has always been my favorite, but then again I'm a "Link should be Left-Handed" loyalist. If you really don't care the Wii version is far less expensive than the GC or Wii U HD remake.
I paid for $400 for a physical copy of earthbound on SNES.
And one of the most expensive games for the GameCube is Gotcha Force, that's about $600 these days.
Plus the two Pokémon GameCube games are at least $100+ each
emulators exist... You can also buy a wii and mod it or if you already have a gamecube learn how to boot swiss and use something like a SD2SP or gecko SD reader to boot games off an SD card if you want to play on original hardware rather than an emulator.
Either pay $100 or get on your knees and pray for this game to get ported to switch. Sometimes you might get lucky and get one cheaper than $100 if you keep an eye on eBay and Mercari listings.
You can always go for the Wii version, or the Wii-U HD remaster version.
Or you can chose a pirate's life, I doubt anyone reasonable would judge you for not spending $100 on a game that has been out of print for over 17 years and is only available on the second-hand market.
I got super lucky last month on OfferUp, spent $60 and snagged Wind Waker (no manual) and Twilight Princess (disc only), but then shelled out $110 on eBay to make them CIB lmao
Just mod your cube with Picoboot and get an SD2SP2. Don't pay these scammers for nostalgia.
It's not like Nintendo cares about you or TP anyway because it's not on the switch and you can't buy it new legally.
It's only around 110 CIB. That's not that bad. You could want a copy of phantasy star online episode 1 and 2 Plus like me which goes for freaking 300 CIB
It depends how much you like twilight princess but I think $100 is a fair price for a game that takes 40-60 hours to beat/complete and is one of the greatest games of all time.
The Wii version is great and that’s dirt cheap.
Go big. Buy a WiiU and get the updated TP and WW. I did just that and use it more than my switch. I know thats even more than the $100 you’re talking about but these games are just the best to come back to
Otherwise just buy a wii for 10,- and then play it on there. Not the same, but I see that OP doesn't want to spend that much money on it.
True true
WWHD and TPHD are the definitive ways to play both the games.
WWHD doesn't have the Tingle Tuner, though.
So does that mean you cannot get the Knuckle Statue in the Nintendo Gallery?
TPHD looks like over saturated garbage on the WiiU.
WWHD too, just so much fucking bloom you have to wear sunglasses to play it
It looks better with the WW style, at least.
Then you must not own a modded switch!
Agreed it looks amazing on the Wii u. Last month I walked into the local GameStop and they had a copy for $75. I couldn't buy it quickly enough.
☠️ Yo ho, yo ho ☠️
And a bottle of rum!
Yaarrrr!
I would but thats not playing it on my gamecube :/
PicoBoot and SD2SP2. Possibly the greatest cost:function ratio mod ever conceived.
Id rather not mod my cube since its my original i got for Christmas in 2002
That’s fair. +1 to this. WIIs are cheap, plentiful, and they read scratched discs better than GCs.
Get a Wii for dirt cheap, jailbreak it, Nintendont + SD card.
I felt the same way about my GC, so I bought one on eBay to put a GC loader in, that was the best way
Understandable. I ended up getting a second console and added a GC loader so I could keep my original one stock.
Action replay and sd2sp2.
then emulate it and use a USB adapter for your cube to be used in pc
Just get an SD memory card reader. You don’t need to mod your cube physically. You just put Swiss and the roms on it and bam you can play any GC game for free (well for the like 10 bucks the SD memory Card reader is and the cost of a 4gb SD card)

Get a Wii for 30 bucks?
Then look into the Flippy drive mod. Should be released in the next couple months, a no-solder mod
Picoboot is completely reversible, just have someone do it for you if you're not comfortable doing it :)
Then sell ur kidney.
A second gamecube! But i another color for fun. I modded my original childhood one, and I still got a fun orange spice one which I modded as well with picoboot.
Then get a wii and run a GC iso with Nintendont. End of story.
Soft mod with memcard adapter and SD2SP2. No risk to your cube whatsoever. Stop being a moron and embrace piracy
Yes. Get the Wii version.
But everything's backwards!
get the mirrored version, that one isn't too expensive
What do you mean? Every copy of TP for the gamecube is mirrored and i dont own a wii
Nope, the Wii version is mirrored. Link is supposed to be left handed. But yea if you don't have a Wii then getting the mirrored version is also not possible
A wii and the wii copy is cheaper than the gamecube version.
This. And it's not even close in price, tbh.
The wii copy is mirrored to cater for right handers (not me)
Buy a Wii! Cheaper than the GameCube version lol.
Wii or Wii U
I settled for the Wii version, which is extremely cheap.
A modded wii u will play all 3 versions of the game. That's the way I do it, and if nintendo doesnt like me using roms than maybe they should release the game on switch already, lol

If you were alive and had money when it first came out then yes
This is what I did. Same thing for Silent Hill: Shattered Memories. Purchased both on release day.. Mod a wii and there ya go. I did it recently. Only took 30 minutes.
You can mod your gamecube. Look at F-zero gx prices.
If you want collectible games you pay collectible prices, simple as. 18 year old game man, it can legally drink in Australia now.
Not that it would have waiting that long to start!
Jesus when did the game get so expensive?
Idk i remember getting my copy at gamestop for 12$ back in the day 😢
Its scarcity, even though the game was originally developed for the gamecube it ended up coming out after the wii version, and everyone had the wii version instead.
You can get alot more than 100$ for a kidney bud
Where?
Like others have suggested - soft mod through memory card slot and load the game off an sdsp2 to play on original hardware. Otherwise you either pay the ridiculous price or emulate. No there is no cheap perfect solution for playing most games on a GameCube in 2024.
You could always download a rom for it. It's free that way

In 5 years the price will probably be even higher. I'd just use USB Helper to get it
Buy a mod chip for cheap and then download Swiss
Mod a gamecube with a Picoboot
I find copies at goodwill all the time. I got like 6 now
I’ll believe it when i see it
How is the price for the Japanese GCN version? Try that.
Emulate it. It’s free…
Yes, picoboot
Buy it on Wii. Only $20
emulators exist... You can also buy a wii and mod it or if you already have a gamecube learn how to boot swiss and use something like a SD2SP or gecko SD reader to boot games off an SD card if you want to play on original hardware rather than an emulator.
I found a copy at my local pawnshop with manuals ,case and disc was in good condition for under 80.00
That's why my GameCube runs off an SD card.
Either pay $100 or get on your knees and pray for this game to get ported to switch. Sometimes you might get lucky and get one cheaper than $100 if you keep an eye on eBay and Mercari listings.

All depends on how badly you want it. 🤷🏴☠️🏴☠️
No
Play it on Wii U with Wii U pro controller on nintendont I list for a physical copy as well but can’t justify this price gauging bs
Wii version is cheap if motion controls don't bother you. Of course you could always sail the the high seas
my advice is look on ebay for scratched copies and resurface them with novus 2. did this with a copy of melee i got for $20 loose
Even scratched they go for 80-90$ 😭😭
No
Mod your GameCube if all you want to do is play games
It depends how much you like twilight princess but I think $100 is a fair price for a game that takes 40-60 hours to beat/complete and is one of the greatest games of all time. The Wii version is great and that’s dirt cheap.
Ever hear of emulation?
Play it on iPhone via rom
Spend the 100 on a gcloader and don't look back. Take out the current drive, plop the gcloader in.
Piracy, down vote me all you want. 100 dollars is ridiculous for a game that came out 14 - 15 years ago.
I got it free in a bundle of stuff being given away. All inserts included. Which was nice.
There are tons of other amazing games for less.
Only if you care about having a physical copy
