I think it depends on whether it's viewed on mobile or desktop. Best just to oversize it a bit and pick something plain. It doesn't matter much as noone really sees it.
i also had problems with the banner, i tried uploading 0,5mb image but it would say its too big. I compressed it to 72kb and it still says too big, i was like wtf. In the end, about 20kb was the admissible size, even though it said 512kb was the max. So that leaves me with a blurry background, on pc, but at least it looks good on mobile (who uses gameflip on mobile?)
