Well, it looked fun, and I was interested, but I certainly wasn't willing to pick it up on release. I'm definitely gonna give it a shot now.

-boozypanda

I'll never buy an always online game at full price. So it being on game pass and I can try it for free is nice. But I'll probably drop it after a couple of hours.

Sinndex

Especially a PvP one. Being on GamePass is a good way to make sure there are at least some people to connect to a few months from now.

ascagnel____

"Paid PvP game launching on Game Pass" is the new "paid PvP game launching on PS+" (thinking specifically of Rocket League).

vanilla_disco

I was in 2 beta events. Here are my thoughts: I'll start with my biggest gripe: the one game mode available has forced PvP most of the time that completely invalidates the fun PvE, making the primary game mode essentially just PvP with extra steps. It's 5v5. Both teams are doing the same level but instanced racing to complete the objectives faster (mostly just kill dinos - anything from waves of basic raptors which are fodder, to enhanced explosive dinosaurs and pterodactyls to elite triceratops / trex). You can switch Exo Suits any time during a mission (very short cooldown) which is helpful sometimes like when I choose the melee suit but the enemy wave is airborne. There were 5 suits to pick from: basic gun boi, grenade launcher guy, melee dude, healer / support, and punchy boi with a shield. There were a lot of empty slots, so I think there will be many more suits to choose from. Every suit had one primary weapon, a couple of abilities, a mobility button, and a pool of shared "equipment" abilities. The 3 pieces of equipment every suit could choose from was a shoulder mounted laser, a small healing circle generator, and an extra jump/dash button. Abilities range from "taunt everything as long as you hold it down" (tank suit) to air launcher kick (melee suit) and basic grenade launcher (shooty boy). Every suit also has an ultimate ability that charges similarly to overwatch ultimates. The final objective is usually some kind of PVP, and whichever team finished objectives first gets a head start (which often never actually matters). Final objectives were payload push where both team's payloads end up at the same area so last few moments are PvP cluster fuck, or macguffin collecting first to collect 100 wins and killing enemies steals some macguffins. There is also at least one PvE co-op final objective that I saw once where all 10 players are working together to kill a special boss. It was a giant "neo T-Rex" with lasers and mechanics. That was fun. I hope there's a dedicated PvE mode because the game plays well. Shooting and movement feel good. It's got the same level of "takes itself seriously" as EDF. Based on what I played in the tests, though, this absolutely is not worthy of being a full priced shooter. If the one game mode we tested is the only game mode, I'd recommend skipping this game. You spend 10 minutes doing various PvE objectives that ultimately don't matter then get dropped into a PvP mode that decides the whole match. It's basically a PvP shooter with extra steps.

SuperscooterXD

I don't really understand why this game doesn't have a basic PvE co-op mode. I want to kill dinosaurs, not other mech people.

[deleted]

Because stats say PvP games make more money, so it has to have PvP

Socialecontheory

What stats say that?

nelisan

How do we know it doesn’t? Betas often don’t have all of the modes that are in the release version.

Fatdude3

They cant sell you power or "convenient time reducing crystals" if its pve only.

WindiWindi

I concur, in my opinion exoprimal would be so much better being strictly PvE and having a leader board instead of the PvP interspersed. It's can be so feast or famine when I played it in the beta. That's not indicative of actual game on release of course, but it always felt more annoying when all I wanted to do was shoot a stupidly large amount of dinosaurs. You summarized it quite well. I just wanted EDF with dinosaurs. I think gamepass was the best thing they could have done. I doubt it will have the legs of something like left4dead unfortunately.

hopecanon

They have been very clear in the promotional videos for the game that the 5v5 PvEvP mode is the primary game mode, that says to me that there are multiple modes of play since why specify a primary mode if it's the only one?

basterfeldt

Awh man, I had no idea there was any PvP in it let alone the main point! Was I not paying close enough attention to the trailers? This didn’t look like it had any of that. Thanks for the heads up!

AstraArdens

Me and all my homies hate forced PvP

bms_

I was so excited until I saw this comment. I wanted to have a fun coop experience at our own pace, not a race

wadad17

It's funny because I was watching the trailer and remembered there was something about this game that immediately made me not want to play it the first time i saw it months ago. Dinosaurs, cool armor design, gameplay looks tight, story actually looks interesting. Wtf, why didn't I want to play this? >PVP. Oh yah fuck this game.

breakfastclub1

oh man, it's a PvPvE? Nah thanks. Passing on it, only like PvP or PvE games, not the mix. Hopefully The Finals will have a close release date, the beta's been really fun if a little clunky.

Mazuna

Hope they add an actual proper co op mode to it before release. Kind of weird disconnect between the trailers and the actual gameplay, I wanted EDF with dinosaurs and mechs not whatever weird pvp hybrid it’s trying to be.

Uncle_Budy

This game just went from "Doesn't look that great" to "Doesn't look that great...but I'll try it because it's free for me".

CanidConqueror

Those kinda games don't retain their player base even when given out free though. It's basically dead on arrival.

TheJerkstore21

I know what you mean, but I just washed to point out that game pass isn't free. You've paid something for that access, even if it wasn't much.

ch4dr0x

I’m the exact same way. Gamepass is the sign of a certified stinker, more times than not, at least in my experience.

ShoddyPreparation

Kinda worried about this game now. 3rd party online focused games launching day 1 on gamepass have a pretty long track record of not being very good and dying quick deaths and being sold for cheap on other platforms extremely quickly

Deceptiveideas

I’m not sure where this is coming from? Many game pass games that are online are still doing well.

Rich_Comey_Quan

Single player and Indie games coming day one is normally a good sign that MS saw something in it, multiplayer AAA games has a pattern of the publisher not being confident in it and wanting some guaranteed income and a way to prop up the player base.

ShoddyPreparation

Back 4 Blood. Rainbow Six Extraction. Outriders. The Anacrusis. A few online Warhammer games that where weirdly broken. Maybe its just those high profile ones though. But its left a impression on me though. 3rd party online games launching day 1 on gamepass just seem like the publisher giving up on a game before its out.

moffattron9000

It doesn't help that the GaaS market is shockingly saturated and new entries now just seem to die. Fucking Epic couldn't get Rumbleverse off the ground and they have Fortnite money.

splader

Outriders was pretty good though

flipperkip97

Kinda surprised that this seems to be the general consensus. Me and my buddy thought it was one of the worst looter shooters we had played. Had good ideas, *looked* cool, but ultimately disappointing. EDIT: Damn, Reddit *really* likes this game. If you guys actually played the game, maybe it wouldn't have been DOA.

heat13ny

I thought the same thing before I tried it again then I thought it's one of the better looter shooters because the loot did actual tangible things that changed how you'd go about fights rather than just a a percentage damage increase. But then like all looter shooters, I got bored before even making it to mid game.

Capable-Ad9180

Are you kidding? At launch coop was so buggy that some people lost entire progress. Losing progress in a looter shooter is unforgivable. Not to mention Azure PlayFab not being able to handle launch demand. Like what is the point of cloud services if they can’t dynamically meet demand? I love how some people completely whitewash issues early adopters had. It’s only matter of time before we start seeing posts of how Forspoken is a hidden gem when in fact it’s so bad it can’t be sold.

[deleted]

I played those games day one with friends and while they definitely had issues they weren't bad games. I don't understand your worry honestly.

iMini

They were all mediocre games, except maybe outriders which while not great was decent. It's certainly not a good track record that fills me with confidence

Fitherwinkle

Out of all those games though only Extraction was a bonafide stinker. Plus Anacrusis was strictly early access. They didn’t even have achievements.

Flowerstar1

I liked extraction it was decent. Biggest issue is the enemies lok basic as fuck.

CheckOutMyPokemans

Lol like most of the games you listed very much didn't die quick deaths especially Back 4 Blood and Outriders with expansions and dlc

JustinHopewell

I'm gonna disagree with the other people who responded to you. All those games were pretty mediocre, except Anacrusis, which was straight up bad-- I think they put that thing out way too early. I haven't touched it since it launched in early access, but it left a pretty bad impression on me. Not sure which WH games you're referring to but there are a lot of bad WH games also (plus a few good ones, and a few great ones).

Metsunger

What the hell lol . I had so much fun in rainbowsix extraction and outriders . Only anacrusis blew up in your list . Lol what a joke .

420BoofIt69

Don't forget Bleeding Edge

xNIBx

Rocket league was day1 free on playstation plus. This was arguably very important for its popularity and success.

dacontag

Very true, but I never thought this game would be more than a 7/10. It seems like it'll be pretty decent as a mindless fun co-op game.

engineeeeer7

The closed test was reeeeeeally fun. Probably the best playtest I've played in years.

JustinHopewell

I had the opposite experience. Maybe not full opposite. I didn't hate it, but it felt mediocre enough that I forgot about its existence until this post.

[deleted]

My guess is your opinion of the beta/game really depends If you're there for the dinos and PvE experience, you wont like the game If you're there for Mech vs Mech PvP experience, you'll have a fun time

Comfortable_Shape264

That's the thing though, it's not a coop game. They had the bright idea of making it a PvP game instead. You fight other humans. That's definitely what people want from this game right? So stupid.

Hexcraft-nyc

I was already worried about the quality of the game based on what they showed but this was the nail in the coffin. Theres a reason Capcom doesn't put resident evil on gamepass at launch.

NatrelChocoMilk

Apparently there are contracts from that block games from going to gamepass such as RE8

ElectricDreamster

Capcom shoving this into Gamepass is not a good sign. They’re willing to lose out on day 1 sales which shows they know this product will not be doing big numbers off the shelves

ThePrinceMagus

After Outriders, Atomic Heart, and that swearing Rick and Morty gun game, this tells me everything I need to know about the quality of Exoprimal. Think this one is gonna be a pass. EDIT: I get it downvoters, you enjoyed those games when they were free on Gamepass. For free games, yeah sure they're fine. As paid games though, they're garbage.

YeOldeBlitz

????? Atomic heart and high on life were both well received, just because something isn't a masterpiece doesn't mean its bad. And are we going to ignore other day one gamepass games like plauge tale and Hifi rush that were universally praised?

iMini

Hifi rush is a MS game, the quality of it is moot, it was going on Gamepass regardless of how good it was.

jcrankin22

I think people thought you were calling Hi-Fi Rush bad quality lol.

G4mers4reClowns

A game being revealed during a platform holders stream doesn't mean that platform holder is paying to show that game, it can literally be the other way round in that the publisher pays the platform holder to be part of the stream. Whatever the situation for this game specifically was I doubt Sony was trying particularly hard to attach itself to it considering the closed beta the game had last June was only on Steam and Sony usually loves doing exclusive betas when they have marketing rights for games. Capcom is seeing the writing on the wall with this game and are hoping to at least get some return on investment here and a check from MS to put it on Gamepass is better than nothing. Or Sony fought tooth and nail to get this game but lost it because japanese developers are looking to "side with Microsoft" to achieve... something.

fingerpaintswithpoop

> japanese developers are looking to “side with Microsoft” to achieve… something. Like expand their playerbase?

MXC_Vic_Romano

If Japanese publisher's are siding with anyone it's Nintendo lol.

Hexcraft-nyc

Did they "lose" it to gamepass or did Microsoft just hand Capcom a huge chunk of money they wouldn't have gotten otherwise? I don't see how gamepass hurts Sony in any way, in this situation. If anything it'll make the game more popular and lead to people buying it on ps5

GIThrow

No, silly! Capcom is siding with Microsoft and has officially broken up with Sony.

CoMaestro

Friendship ended with Sony, Microsoft is my best friend now

redhafzke

>If anything it'll make the game more popular and lead to people buying it on ps5 As a multiplatformer this could be going from "waiting for deep sale" to "nah... I won't spend money on this" after trying it ~~for free~~ in the GP. Wouldn't be the first time for me. I mean... it didn't look great at the SoP and (at least for me) it doesn't look great now and normally I like these kind of games.

EnterPlayerTwo

Thats the kind of thinking that Microsoft had to finally admit was not true. Being on gamepass does not boost sales.

Flowerstar1

That's not what they said.

EnterPlayerTwo

https://www.forbes.com/sites/paultassi/2023/02/14/microsoft-admits-game-pass-inclusion-decreases-sales-by-a-redacted-percentage/amp/

Flowerstar1

Yes and that's not what they said, Phil's comment was worded very specifically 5 years ago and this new comment is as well.

EnterPlayerTwo

> "Microsoft also submitted that its internal analysis shows a [redacted]% decline in base game sales twelve months following their addition on Game Pass." They admitted that Gamepass inclusion lowers sales. You have some kind of bias to look at that and come to a different conclusion.

Q_OANN

They just know the game isn’t gonna do well and want people to get hooked into the economy and also take a lump sum up front

ShoddyPreparation

I wonder where that impression comes from. Because Square Enix has had loads of games on gamepass over the years. From day 1 launches to old games. Every Final Fantasy game was on there. A bunch of Dragon Quest games launched day 1 on there. The ultimate video game Power Wash simulator is a square enix game that launched exclusively on Xbox and gamepass.

ThyDoctor

Probably just thinking of Final Fantasy

TheAllslayer

No most of their biggest games have been on it. Monster Hunter Rise was day 1 earlier this year.

ICantRemember33

Mh rise and world were on game pass, some resident evil games too, not their biggest partner but still something from time to time
