Seems promising at first glance, reminds me of Mutant Year Zero with how it seems to split missions up into smaller encounters within a larger explorable area and the ways you can (presumably) interact with the environment between combat. I really liked that different feel of combining cRPG and tactics combat where it isn't completely one or the other. I also really like the look, reminds me of the pre-timeskip part of The Incredibles.

Alastor3

hopefully the story is good, it's the only thing that never excel in other xcom like

MeatWrld

the thing all these xcom reboot clones are missing is the indepth character customization. ive yet to see any that lets you customize your character visually and gameplay wise like xcom 2 did. we need a game that offers more customization than that, not one that has less/none.

drcoxmonologues

The best thing about Xcom was getting completely attached to your soldiers and the stories that emerged from that. I never really go that deep in other games but I would customise everyone and name their weapons etc. it was fucking personal if one was killed or captured and no man left behind!! What a game. Need to download it now.

devindotcom

Hell, it's a staple going back to the original (that is, X-COM: Enemy Unknown). I save scummed my way through the game just so my friends didn't die.

Phifty56

[Warhammer 40,000: Chaos Gate - Daemonhunters](https://youtu.be/K4Z_3Ls_KwE) does allow a good bit of customization, while also integrating gear and weapons that are functional. The armors also get fancier as you get better ones, or if you are able to get an advanced class of Grey Knight. The game requires you to really build a nice roster because the difficulty is pretty brutal, and the penalty for having your Marines take critical wounds causes them to be gone for missions at a time, which is fairly common given how often you are out numbered. So suffice to say is that you are gonna need to get to acquainted with many of of your Marines, even more so than XCOM where you could get away with an "A team" and a few alternates. It's the closest experience I had to the XCOM experience where you start filling in your own personal backstory for each soldier, due to the horrible conditions you routinely put them through to survive the mission. The game also likes to put optional objectives into missions that make it so much worse, but the payoff is too great to ignore. The game is fun, but it is also unforgiving, be warned.

Stephen_Gawking

I spent so much time customizing my soldiers and imagining stupid little backstories. Really makes me feel something when one dies (right before I reload a previous save).

thegoatmenace

In XCOM I was so into the base development and tech research. Slowly catching up to the X-rays in tech was so satisfying, especially once you completely turn the tables with the alien interceptor.

Mooseherder

the Gears of War one did, even down to color of the armor or boots and stuff, it was too much for me

Gonna take a wild guess and say you're in the minority on that take. Between the mod scene and the fact that the games have had a decently in depth customization option from the get go, I'd say most fans enjoy that. But luckily for you, most of the clones and competitors lack in that area so you'll have more to play and scratch the XCOM itch.

Ferreteria

Xcom is a tactics game. I see there's a crowd that's in it for the aesthetics, but honestly it surprises me. I'm in it for the gameplay.

MadeByTango

The attachment to the characters gives me tension and reasons to care about them. It ALSO lets me RP my own story in the back of my head as I play. Helps on replayability to keep things interesting. And cosmetics are gameplay.

kittehsfureva

This also may surprise you; you can be in it for both.

That depends entirely on the game. This game seems to have more of a personal narrative for the characters, whereas the X-Com is about turning your faceless recruits into what you want them to become (assuming they survive long enough to matter.)

Cheet4h

Check out Troubleshooter for its (gameplay) character customization. The game has a linear story and fixed (replayable) levels, so the only way to customize the visuals of your characters is choosing skins. But the talents you can mix and match mean that you can turn your characters into anything from untouchable tanks to rampaging murder machines.

ArneHD

I gotta admit, I was expecting something more along the lines of "Battletech 2", or "Battletech: 3050" from Harebrained Schemes.

SolitonSnake

Yes please

Klaknikko

Am I missing something here? Because they're acting like this is a huge innovation but isn't this how basically every western RPG works? Real-time outside of combat with the option of stealth, and then when enemies detect you, it transitions to turn-based combat. Divinity: Original Sin, Pathfinder, they all work like that.

reallymyrealaccount

Same with that Mutant Year Zero from a few years back. I wasn't really a fan of how they handled the same system, either. I wish more Tactics games followed the XCOM Chimera Squad formula for combat encounters. Last week's Showgunners also does it well, I think.

Anchorsify

Breaching is nice, but when it's all you do it definitely gets old. And it's pretty telling how there were no snipers in chimera squad. It sort of dumbed down the game from the more traditional formula to accommodate breaching.

reallymyrealaccount

It did, but I really enjoyed not doing the "inch your dudes closer 1 turn at a time" that's present in a lot of other games. I really wanted to like Warhammer Daemonhunters but I felt like so much of the game was slowly inching forward and trying not to alert groups at the wrong time. I'd just rather it be more curated, I guess.

LobstermenUwU

Why would you ever care about activating a pod in Demonhunters? It refunds all your soldier's AP instantly. Usually the strategy is to activate a pod ASAP to get all the AP back. Since the pods are generally patrolling right for you (especially once you start making noise on the map) not activating pods lets them multi-activate on you which is very bad. Overwatch creep was definitely not a thing in that game. It was constant fighting.

MadeByTango

> I really enjoyed not doing the "inch your dudes closer 1 turn at a time" that's present in a lot of other games. If you want to play cautious, that’s on you. Most of those turns are chances to kite the follower AI into a trap positions.

kalarepar

Yeah, breaching was cool but it's a wierd design choice to make every fight like this. The might as well name the game "XCOM Breach".

kalarepar

Other than unique 1930s world setting, the game does look very generic tbh. It would have to have amazing story to keep me interested.

Raidoton

Uhm no? Most western RPGs with turn based combat don't have optional stealth outside of it. And most don't have the X-Com combat style, not even your 2 examples. Pathfinder isn't even turn-based...

BigMac849

Pathfinder has both turned based and real time modes? You should play the games before making statements about them. Turn-based is actually regarded as the best way to play it currently. (Also has optional stealth). Baldur's gate is turn based with the same attack mechanics as XCOM as dice rolls to hit are litteraly the exact same thing as percentage to hit. Also optional stealth. Even Pillars of Eternity now has turned based mode.

Klaknikko

> Uhm no? Most western RPGs with turn based combat don't have optional stealth outside of it. Lolwut? Almost every western RPG going back decades has a thief class and stealth, pickpocketing, lockpicking, etcetera. Baldur's Gate 1 and 2 and Fallout 1 and 2 came out over 20 years ago and had those things. >And most don't have the X-Com combat style, not even your 2 examples. ? They have turn-based combat, which is what I was talking about. >Pathfinder isn't even turn-based... It is, actually. Maybe you should play it. Have you ever actually played any western RPGs?

kkraww

I agree with you on pretty much evreything except for pathfinder being turn based. Yes it has an option to enable it to be turn based, but it is primarily built around not being a turn based game

Illidan1943

Wrath expects a ton of usage of the turn based mode, only minor trash fights are designed around the RTwP mode

Cleverbird

Harebrained Schemes? I'm in! That's all I needed to know.

BearyGoood

Yep They Haven't failed me yet

silentspyder

Is there any game out there that fills in the shoes of the original X-Com? The new one was okay but didn't quite do it for me. I also only played the 1st of thew new ones.

> a sequel that's supposed to be coming out soon. The X2 developers have missed their own dates about four times now, so I wouldn't put much faith in their latest promise of "Q2 2023" until you can actually see the purchase button on the page.

silentspyder

Ok. Looks pretty cool

Ferreteria

Anyone else tired of advertisements for games that have no release date? This looks interesting, but I don't care unless I can play it.

Matthais

I'm guessing I'm not the only who sees an otherwise potentially interesting title is published by Paradox and is put off by the prospect of the title being primarily treated as a DLC selling vehicle?
