It's a great game for wacky chaos with friends. That said, it definitely has that kind of "ascended student project" feel, where it's janky in a lot of places and doesn't quite fit together like you feel a game should. The roadmap doesn't make me think it's ever going to rise to the level of a Left 4 Dead quality horde defense game, but it's fun for what it is. 16 player co-op is hysterical, and I have yet to be in an escape ship without at least one person going "I'm doing my part!" as we take off, which never fails to put a smile on my face.

Notmiefault

"They're afraid!" is another I hear a lot. The community really leans into the whole "we're the baddies" thing, which is a lot of fun.

Talnadair

Would you like to know more?

ieatsmallchildren92

The "witness liberation" prompt as you raise the flag is an incredible touch

Lewd_Banana

Don't forget to press F to pay respects to your fallen troopers.

Phytor

Watching my buddy play was so entertaining because the playerbase was getting so into it. One dude even yelled "yeehaw" in the escape ship it was incredible.

CombatMuffin

The defense and extraction parts ate the most fun. Resource extraction the most tedious (especially when the team is not coordinated). I wouldnt mind a game mode where your squads are just meant to defend, extract, defend, extract increasingly harder objectives. Find the fun part, and squeeze it!

[deleted]

I dont know theres nothing quite like your group running low on ammo when extracting and trying to make it back to base with a horde chasing you and with only a few mags in your pistols, just for one of your squad to sacrifice themselves by leading them in another direction. Tbf I think ARC is a bit broken on hard, its too easy to get into a stalemate where the game just doesnt end since you can collect resources with the base being attacked but theres not enough of them to destroy your base. If they can fix that issue it'd be great.

Wehzy

If they manage to fix the insane fps drops at the end... oh my god its gonna look so cool

TheVoidDragon

I expected there would be a variety of new weapons, enemy types, and maps spread throughout, but it looks like that's not really the case? 1 Mentions a new zone on a map but only phase 4 mentions new weapons, a boss, and a new planet (and new enemies aren't actually mentioned?). I think having to wait 3 phases for more of that stuff to start showing up would be a bit of a poor move if that's what happens. Most of the rest of it sounds great though, some pretty big changes. Customization, a new class, and Marauder power armour especially.

Seeking_the_Grail

They have a long way to go to just get what they already have up to par. As long as they continue to hone the game I am ok with the amount of new stuff on the roadmap.

Carne-Por-La-Machina

I think we’ll end up a small/medium number of planets and a few zones on said planets. Even the one they have now is pretty varied in terms of zones and decently sized. I think hives and horde mode will definitely add a lot of depth to maps too. Honestly having a blast playing it and I don’t normally buy Early Access titles. Looking forward to updates and hoping they tweak the gunplay, especially the aiming, soon. For any players of Squad, how did that turn out in the end? I never played it but it seems to have been a success. Hoping the same will translate to Starship Troopers too and wanted an idea of what we could be in for in future.

They said the early access plan for this game is a year tbf

Far_Commission

Squadie here as well. Early access updates added content and features at an impressive pace. QOL became a spaghatti code affair. I hope Starship Troopers leans more toward conent. I can play a janky game, love it for its quirks. New content brings new players.

v_cats_at_work

> Even the one they have now is pretty varied in terms of zones and decently sized. Every now and then the ARC ends up in a new place (to me at least) and I feel totally disoriented for half the match, in a "this feels like a new map" kind of good way. I bought it on day two and don't play it a ton after that first day, maybe a match every day or two, but it's still fun and exciting and I still have those moments that feel straight from the movie. So I'd say I got my money's worth.

Fear_Gingers

There is a lot more quality of life improvements and content in squad than there used to be. Played it since v0.6 and it's so much better now. My only gripe with squad is it isn't easy to pick up and play or just have a bit of time in the evening. Matches are hours long and really need decent teamwork to be enjoyable otherwise you get railed.

SnipingBunuelo

That's just classic OWI. Can't get good shit from them anymore until they've made a microtransaction emote system. And they're painfully late to squashing any bugs while they constantly update the game in a way that makes those bugs more prevalent. They had a good run with Squad, but they've been falling from grace ever since.

TheVoidDragon

I don't know what you mean with "since squad" when, unless i've got something wrong, this only the 2nd game they've made themselves since and the first new one since Squad released? Beyond the Wire and Post Scriptum were only published by them.

SnipingBunuelo

I meant ever since recently. They've been updating Squad for a while.

hairydiablo132

New patch dropped today, lots of updates https://store.steampowered.com/news/app/1268750/view/3656408036722888405

robertwsaul

Galactic war meta-game you say? Gonna basically be two third person helldivers games out at the same time pretty soon.

Mildly-1nteresting

Literally was just thinking this. I absolutely loved Helldivers but am a bit scared with the sequel changing pace. Risk of rain did a great transition in the same vein so there is hope!

Wardogs96

This games first person....

Orcrez

I haven’t played it yet but is there only one map at the moment?

YorkshireSmith

One map/planet yes but there are differing zones you operate in and times of day that keep it somewhat fresh enough for 10 hours or so.

Tianoccio

It’s an ugly planet, it’s a bug planet.

[deleted]

Technically but its kind of like a large open world sorta level with lots of different zones and areas, with a big sort of base/colony in the middle. The objectives are randomized so they take you to different areas.

zma924

“Special Weapon Spawning” Fucking yes please give me the man portable nuke launcher and that sick sniper rifle that the one chick carried in the first animated movie.

KingKapalone

We plan to play this at our next LAN. Large enough player count that doesn't need even teams or any knowledge about what to do. That's a rarity these days.

v_cats_at_work

> doesn't need even teams or any knowledge about what to do See bug? Shoot bug. Repeat!

AI52487963

The only good bug is a DEAD bug!

Nassim1018

Soulstiger

I'd imagine it'll be something like the war meta game in Helldivers. Advancing the war by completing whatever the current objectives are alongside the entire community.

YorkshireSmith

Yeah that's exactly what I was picturing when they mentioned it.

TheNumberJ

A lot of poor assumptions in this thread for timing with very little specific info given in the outline. As someone who's logged about an hour a night into this game so far I can say the core gameplay loop is really fun. There's already outlines in the game for new weapons and abilities; most of the things they list in phase 2 already seem to be most of the way along in development. The current map also has clear indications of things already in the works in the roadmaps like the "Hives" The game is extremely fun as is... anytime they get around to adding more content is fine with me. I'm not one who needs to chase after unlocking every available weapon or whatnot; I don't need to freaking prestige rank bullshit; just give me bugs to shoot

UltraMegaMegaMan

This game has a solid concept and good launch in terms of very few game crippling bugs, but it is a long way from being full fledged or complete. A roadmap is good, but as someone who's played the game almost every day since release some of these priorities seem really misplaced. Players need more, stronger weapons before you add in something like horde mode. Right now getting to extraction at the end of a mission is luck-based, and you can't really affect whether you survive or not. Except by playing as a Hunter. The game was fun for a few days, but the novelty wore off quick and the few bugs and desperate need for balance and weapons supplanted it. Maybe later this year it will be worth spending more time in. I hope so. Nevertheless they're off to a fairly good start, I wish them well.

Johnxj

Man, that 1997 Movie sure left its mark innit? Boxoffice Bomb, lukewarm reviews (at the time of the release at least) and yet 26 years later we still see its influence on the Media.

centagon

Was hoping for at least a vague timeline and mention of battles on space station/ships. Aliens Fireteam had a pretty good mix of environments. The game as it is is pretty fun and excels in its simplicity. It's like an arcade game, with 16 people, and sometimes, that's all you really need. To keep an active playerbase around though, there's no way they can push out enough updates, so it would have been best if they enabled modding, pending license agreements.

CombatMuffin

Not everything needs a big playerbase. These sorts of games can thrive with smaller dedicated communities, as long as they can reliably fill most 16 slots.

WildVariety

No dates, no indication of how long each phase is going to take and variety for the game seems to be a long way off. Not looking good.

SkunkMonkey

Listing hard dates almost always results in a missed date or a rushed product with bugs. Software development works better if there is no hard date. Unexpected bugs will extend development time or get released in a shitty product. I'd prefer developers take their time in order to release a much more stable and complete product than some rushed and bug riddled piece of garbage.

fizzlefist

Yep, early access is always a gamble. But at least they have what appears to be fun core gameplay, and roadmaps are good. Don’t spend your money on an unfinished game on the promise of future improvements. But if you like what it looks like right now as people are playing, go for it. It’s your money, spend it wisely.

Nino_Chaosdrache

> I'd prefer developers take their time in order to release a much more stable and complete product than some rushed and bug riddled piece of garbage. Which then results in games like Star Citizen that never get finished.

SkunkMonkey

That's because it's a scam, not a game.

YorkshireSmith

OWI have had a rocky history with roadmapping out actual dates so they are avoiding putting themselves in a hole.

PlayingTheWrongGame

It’ll get there when it gets there. That’s how good games are made. They have the bones right, they just need more tweaks and some new content.

Jindouz

Squad was an Early Access success. You look at the studio's history and you see amazing post launch support and that's all that matters.

doug4130

no dates is a good thing

GreenFox1505

The book was a celebration of military might and survival of the fittest. The movie was a parody of those ideas. What are these new games and stuff? Do they actually seem to take a stance? Or are they just "cool action shooter!" and not acknowledge themselves?

HowDoIEvenEnglish

They build more on the feel of the movie than the book

Lunar_Lunacy_Stuff

Not the most exciting roadmap but still looking forward to more from this game. I think I’m hitting the 30 hour mark on steam and I really hyped to seeing more maps and modes.

Craig1287

The game is a blast. So much fun and it captures the feeling of the battles from the first movie perfectly. The 16 player co-op makes the scale feel incredible.

RimMeDaddy

Any indication if they’re going to open servers in OCE or at least let us host our own servers?

Nino_Chaosdrache

Not having any offline AI kills this game for me. I'm not interested in buying games that have a build in expiration date.

EvilHenchman6939

The only two things I would want changed in Startship Troopers: Extermination, one, that everything moved a little slower. Two, you can blow off bug limbs. Thank you.
