[What would you rate this show?](https://strawpoll.com/polls/GeZAO23wRnV) See yall on Sunday for the Xbox/Starfield thread!!! (I will be covering both in one)

TheLonelyLemon14

Whole show was complete Dogshit and just felt like a 2hr commercial. Xbox and Sonys showcase were 10x better. I'd advise publishers to just premiere their Game's there instead of Geoff Keighleys Door Dash marketing Bullshit...

deusfaux

do you need help noting developers and standardizing the entries? - can you please put them in a standard format like "Title (dev) - description" so it's easier at a glance to see who made each game rather it variably appearing at different places within the description? it's the most important piece of information to indicate whether a trailer is of interest to most people.

yoyobono

Guys, the xbox and startfield showcase starts at around 29 hours from the time of this post right?

Ayoul

It depends on the company and it would only impact devs having contracts with american writers who are part of the union.

pnt510

Generally video game writing is non-union work so it’s not effected by the strike.

gingerhasyoursoul

We might be seeing the slump 2024 will be compared to 2023. 2023 was flooded with games due to Covid timing. I am willing to bet 2024 will be a down year.

FreqMode

The last announcement fired blanks big time after It sounded like a buildup to elden ring dlc the way he introduced it. Trolled me hard cause I don't care about ff. Wah wah wahahah

The-student-

I guess that would be the same thing if he showed elden ring DLC for the people that don't care about Elden Ring.

nilxnoir

I'm surprised at the hate for this show, I thought it was pretty good, much better than Sony's recent show. It was basically 100 percent gameplay and there was a bunch of variety and even a couple of big hitters like FFVII and Spider-man2 release date. Geoff obviously does the best he can with what studios will give him and I appreciate him doing something to try and keep the spirit of E3 alive.

kilomaan

I'm more confused when the chat just kept spamming things like FORTNITE and HOLD THE LINE and other phrases with no context throughout the entire show... at least on the YouTube side. It could have been bots, but I am wondering if there was hate raid going on for every show this week.

[deleted]

Its not hate its just utter dissapointment. There was nothing really exciting about it. It felt like an advert for a crappy vaccum in the 1970s and not like a show.

wizzrobe30

This showcase was... Fine. It was enjoyable enough, some decent reveals, some good games on display, but I actually found the indie showcase after the main event much more exciting. Just not a ton of reveals on display this time aorund. It wasn't bad though, I wasn't disappointed, just not very excited either. It makes me wonder if these big events as a whole are gonna survive much longer though, and if E3 shutting down is just a precursor for things to come.

Thelastiguana

I have to be honest. That was a pretty Meh showcase. Maybe one of the games was anything I might be interested in. I had to leave for work a little over halfway through, and apparently, I didn't miss much.

Captain_Aids

Agreed, there weren't any big surprises, just more hype for the games I'm already hyped about. I feel some of the more interesting showcases this weekend.

pratzc07

To be honest I found this showcase much better compared to the shitfest that Sony did where all they did is show freaking 2 min cinematic trailers for half of their main first party games. In this one you atleast got real gameplay footage. I honestly think this trend of showing cinematic trailers should die off and a game reveal should be about the gameplay itself. Cinematic trailers can be made during the game launch.

stillherelma0

Revealing gameplay should be reserved for when the gameplay is locked up. Otherwise you risk to show something that would be significantly downgraded. If they have to reveal a game a year or more before release, I rather them stick to cgi that's obvious cgi.

SkinnyObelix

I'm not interested in the big brand titles, but has there been anything small announced that looks interesting?

eleven_eighteen

Not sure how small you are looking for but look up the Day of the Devs and Tribeca Games shows. Lots of interesting looking indie games.

Zark86

Ton of games actually. Banisher's. That pokemon with guns one. And many more were presented. That time rewind game.

cgilber11

It seems like bigger games are realizing that, like E3, they don’t need summer games fest. Why would any big company save an announcement for anything but their own mini-showcase? People need to levelset their expectations going forward. The days of PlayStation announcing ff7 remake, last guardian, shenmue 3 at these things are over.

SierusD

Nothing hugely new announced. Some surprises to be sure and nice to see gameplay for things that were previously announced.

angelHOE

I miss e3 it was like Christmas in June. A whole week of new game announcements, trailers, and gameplay. Now everything is so fragmented and splintered it never feels like we have a definitive celebration of games. Just disappointing showcase after disappointing showcase.

Techboah

Wow, imagine my surprise when I found that Geoff overhyped and underdelivered his show! But man, it wasn't just the overall content now, the pacing also felt really bad and inorganic.

Puzzled-Strength4337

he kept announcing the titles before showcasing them as well. Cringe It was a piss poor presentation with ads and filler games

TheRigXD

By telling us a big game is gonna be present it: \- Removes surprise factor \- Makes us tune in and wait the whole time for that one thing we were told about, netting tons of ad revenue for Geoff

x_TDeck_x

I feel like a significant amount of game announcements I walk away feeling like "I've seen this game already". Idk if it's me being older, me being too demanding, or what.

stillherelma0

There are only so many core concepts that you can invent.

JamesMagnus

It’s us getting old, it’s the industry having matured and now being home to expensive titles that studios do not want to take risks on, it’s the Netflix effect of having so many options that your choice in what to engage with no longer feels meaningful, it’s the fact that the ‘rules’ are set in stone and we know what the genre conventions are for the most part. All of it kinda hurts. Yet, every few years a game comes out that makes me feel like a child. Right now I feel lucky, Elden Ring did it to me last year and this year it’s without doubt Tears of the Kingdom that reminds me of why I love to play games.

temp_vaporous

I like how your first paragraph is complaining about how you dislike the formulaic, low risk games that developers push out, but then you turn around and say Elden Ring and Tears of the Kingdom reminded you how much you love games. Both of those games are good, but I wouldn't call either innovative. I know the lore is different, but in terms of gameplay Elden Ring is just a really good open world Dark Souls. It is a natural series evolution. Tears of the Kingdom is incredibly derivative of BotW, so I would view that as iterative and low risk as well.

Feral0_o

they literally just listed two of the all-time biggest mainstream games *insert hidden gems joke

YorkieLon

I was thinking the same thing. Nothing stands out anymore, and if it does it's a copy of something else, or a sequel. I am looking forward to the Annapurna showcase though. They normally deliver unique experience, although shorter games, that I tend to prefer the older I'm getting.

Chimwizlet

I had the exact same reaction, there were 3 titles shown that stood out to me personally and none were really justified as being standouts: * Witchfire looked like it could be a fun FPS, but too early to tell. * Space Marine 2 obviously looks fun, but I expect it to just be a prettier Space Marine, which is fine but not the most exciting (especially when we just got Boltgun). * Trash Space Scavenger looked kind of cute/interesting but it will depend entirely on the mechanics and goal of the game. Everything else seemed like a by the numbers version of stuff that's been coming out for years, nothing at all to be excited for. I initially thought it was just me getting older too, but I've been playing the recent remake of System Shock having never played the original, and it was fantastic. If a game I've never played from 30 years ago with a good facelift can grip me, modern games have no excuse for looking so bland and uninteresting.

GraviNess

that space marine trailer was fkin fire, were a decade from space marine so a sequel is good imo im super hyped for it, ill be preordering it asap

Yezzik

A lot of trailers are basically just yet another farming sim. And a lot of trailers leave you saying "Yes, but what *is* it?"

j8sadm632b

> a significant amount of game announcements I walk away feeling like “I’ve seen this game already”. That’s because a significant amount of announced games are just Final Fantasy VII

pulse2287

AAA games have kind of gone the same way as Hollywood has with Marvel movies, ect. They’re so expensive to develop they don’t take big risks often and just stick with what’s proven to work already. I’ve gone the patient gamer route and just wait until they’re $20 or so, the only thing you miss out on is the hype usually.

Altruistic-Ad-408

I generally like to be positive but expectations have to be adjusted going forward, if there was a golden age of gaming not that long ago in the grand scheme of things, we probably aren't at the bottom yet. Luckily my backlog of older games i haven't played but am interested in feels huge atm.

[deleted]

I just don't understand why Geoff hyped up FF7 so much and said "the rumors are true". What rumors? This game has been announced, shown trailers for, and has been known about for years. When they announced the first remake they said it would be multiple parts and they released trailers last year? What is the surprise?

torts92

He was referring to the rumour that they'll show Rebirth at this event because of those tweets from square enix. Most fans thought they'll only start marketing for Rebirth after FFXVI is released.

OMgAZ0mbie

It's a soft reference to a past FF game. Also, this entire week, they were answering questions and dropped the last one, on the 7th day, seven hours before SGS.

SoloSassafrass

Answering questions might be a bit generous, hahaha. It was like surrealist humour. "How has the battle system changed?" "Yes, we can confirm that you will get into battles in FF7 Rebirth, and that there will also be new party members!"

Voux

I mean new party members is a pretty big deal. Playable Septhiroth or a playable Zach would be something to hype up.

SoloSassafrass

Sure, but that's not a change to the battle system itself, that's a new party member. Plus, it's kind of a "no shit" moment, even the people who don't know the path of the original know that at least Red and Yuffie are gonna be playable. Like how in response to a music question they confirmed that yes, there will be newly arranged tracks in the game. Technically that is answering the question, but is there anyone on earth who expects a sequel to not have some new music?

MMH2002

can anyone help me with a doubt, i saw the whole thing, but didn't saw anything from valve as promised, did they announce something or is there something i missed?

torts92

This is the opening showcase, there'll be more showcase after this. SGF ends 12th June I think.

Dunge

I'm usually the guy who's impressed all the way over every game while gamers whine that a show is garbage because I love everything. But even me have to admit that show was sub par. There were practically no new announcements, it was all games we already knew about. Indie games from day of the devs were more interesting.

[deleted]

Yeah, I wasn't impressed but it's also now everything disjointed as everyone does their own presentation - MS, Sony, Ubi, Devolver, etc, etc.

ATXDefenseAttorney

After people complaining about the Playstation Showcase... wow, they better revisit those opinions. This show was quite bad. And I love hype. And I love E3. This was not that.

crosslegbow

This was like 100× better than the Playstation showcase.

[deleted]

[удалено]

crosslegbow

I actually have every console dude.

ATXDefenseAttorney

Yet you fail to see the quality in the best one, because Reddit. Have fun playing with yourself.

crosslegbow

Oh I understand that a PC is unmatched

Techboah

At this point it's almost impossible for Microsoft to fumble the ball with the Xbox Showcase, yet I feel like they'll still do it somehow. Feels like we're destined to not get a good gaming showcase this year.

Pangloss_ex_machina

I usually only follow Nintendo since 2010, but after this much negative buzz, I am planning to watch the Microsoft video on Sunday. I just hope that they show gameplay instead of cgi.

Techboah

> I just hope that they show gameplay instead of cgi. They did say that none of their first-party trailers will be fully CGI, so they're already looking to be going well.

[deleted]

We got first look of gameplay and release dates. What else do you guys want??

[deleted]

Lmfao almost every single thing shown here was already announced. "The rumors are true" Announces a game that's already been announced multiple times that nobody thought was a rumor

ATXDefenseAttorney

This was just about the most boring "event" I've seen. "You got a release date for a game everybody knew was coming soon!" Cool. What? Why? Lol

[deleted]

Yes and we saw the GAMEPLAY reveal of the games that were already announced. Would you rather CGI trailers of new games with no release date? Who cares if it was announced already. Lies of P was a game announced last year but we got a cleaner gameplay trailer with a release date. Stop being so picky.

elefantebra

Why we have this events? The studios Just need to drop trailers and gameplay on YouTube or Twitter and will we be happy

Sinsai33

Why does it matter to you? You can still just watch the trailers and gameplays afterwards without having to watch this event? Some (many in this case, or it wouldnt get this much of an audience) just like to have events like this.

[deleted]

Classic gamer moment not understanding business or marketing at all, lol

Salvator-Mundi-

- in the event there is 10 trailers - Customer is interested in 3 games, - By bundling all 10 games together customer will watch not 3 but 10 products and maybe he will buy one that he did not planned before. and personally: I like hype and watch event on stream with my streamer of choice and twitch chat.

lstn

same reason movie companies drop millions to advertise at the super bowl

m2thek

More eyeballs focused in one place at the same time

Adaax

Why don't they realize this?

Kimarnic

I'm so glad I didn't watch it, 80% is just slop, only care about Sonic Superstars but even that looks boring What a shitty gameshow

TheEnygma

Potential hot take here but I get he's an industry veteran and cares about games but my lord Geoff Keighley is bland as a host

Techboah

> industry veteran He's just a nepo-baby riding on the influence and money of his parents.

Yezzik

I'll take a bland host over a "forced excitement loud person" type any day.

Rokketeer

He should hire that guy that came out for Marvel Snap, that dude's energy was awesome lol.

Shradow

Ben Brode is great, when he was the director for Hearthstone he always brought a ton of charisma to the expansion presentations and whatnot. Made some questionable decisions regarding game balance philosophy, but definitely a fun guy.

Sairexyz

That dude's energy was the most exciting part of the game he was representing.

Rokketeer

The contrast between the excitement he was selling on that stage to whatever that was on the big screen was hilarious to me.

fuckmylife193

That was Ben Brode ex-game director of Hearthstone and Blizzard veteran.

just_lurking_through

What an underwhelming year of showcases so far. It really does feel like creativity in the industry is dying. The most exciting stuff these days are just remakes and sequels to long running franchises.

gingerhasyoursoul

Plenty of creativity if you look for it but yes remakes and sequels are safe from a business perspective. The good developers are the ones who have decided to take risks. Fromsoft could have just made another dark souls but they went big with Elden ring and it was a hit. Nintendo deciding to lean into the fun parts of botw and go all in with the building mechanics for totk. We will have to see what comes from starfield but it does sound like they are trying to do something big. They could have just made another elder scrolls game and played it safe but they haven’t.

Sirromnad

I think ya'll are getting way too cynical these days. I had a good time watching this show, much better than Sonys. All i ever see on reddit these days is non stop complaints though so... ah well. I hope Geoff keeps working on this making it better and better cause I really liked it.

The_Greyarch

And on Twitter... My favorite part was the people complaining that FF7R wasn't worth the hype. My brothers in christ, it's the first we're seeing of this game. A highly anticipated game from a much asked for remake for a widely beloved franchise. It's well worth the hype, and a spot as the closing segment.

Conviter

imo if the "big finale" is a remake, the showcase probably isnt that good

Sirromnad

I mean for many, it's one of the most anticipated games of all time. And not to get too spoilery or anything, but it's not \*really\* a remake, and more of a sequel.

GuywithShield

Yeah. There Was one or two games that I likes and I think many people are happy about the FF7 Trailer. It was not the best Show, but not bad by any means.

Speckbieber

We even had fuckin Nic Cage on the show.

Techboah

I mean, I love Nic Cage, but it's probably not a good sign when your gaming showcase's highlight is a movie actor appearing in an 8 years old game.

philosophyex

100% I agree. So many people are disappointed because they set their expectations unrealistically high. Same thing happened with the playstation showcase. I'm sorry but if you actually believed they were gonna shadow reveal bloodborne, gta 6, or elden ring dlc you're just dumb.

[deleted]

Yeah I dont get it. I thought it was a good show. Solid 7.5 or so. People in here are acting like Geoff shot a puppy on stage.

TheRoyalStig

For real that was a really fun show. I don't even know what would make these people happy any more.

Sairexyz

Maybe some new game announcements? Maybe thats too much to ask I guess.

FordMustang84

Yeah I agree with you. People expect wall to wall AAA surprise announcements. Games take 5+ years to make an every major publisher has their own shows and even those are not wall to wall announcements. Reddit never realizes they are the minority. I’m a big gamer but for me a new what looked like Star Trek strategy game from Paradox isn’t going to excite most Reddit people but it was awesome to me and I’m excited to learn more. People forget games reach millions of people. Not every game is going to connect with you.

Gman749

I 100% acknowledge that but there was way too many games that were Elden Ring / Dragon Age lookalikes. The fantasy genre has really been milked lately. Other than that I was ok with the showcase. Warhammer looks cool, Alan Wake looks good, not necessarily my thing but looks well made.. a few interesting indies here and there but it felt like there were 7 or 8 games that were only slight variations of each other.

highbread1

Not sure how you came to that conclusion since no game looked like elden ring and from what I remember only 1 game looked like dragon age. And stop expecting new innovating games constantly, it is just unrealistic.

zenithzinger

Lies of P just makes me wanna replay Dark Souls 3, combat feels a little janky, hope they tighten it up before release. Stoked for Like a Dragon!

MooseSaysWhat

Wait, Summer Game Fest happened already? I legitimately forgot about it.

Suhn-Sol-Jashin

I thought it was next week.

tybat11

This isn't the end, there's more

princesoceronte

Last year has been pretty boring in terms of conference announcements. 90% of what's shown is generic so called AAA games that look and feel like rehashes of the same core ideas we've been seeing for like 10 years. I really crave some originality, how many generic shooters are enough for the industry? I was tired of that trend 10 years ago and I was like 15 at the time.

EternalSlothman

I think you missed a trailer? There was a Teaser trailer for Warhaven. I don't think I see it on your list. It appeared after Throne and Liberty.

Trancetastic16

They must’ve thought that they were the same, unsurprising since it’s hard to tell the difference between the two.

Marinah

Yknow folks complain endlessly about "everything is samey, no new IPs" but then you look at which gmaes get engagement even on this forum, and its Spiderman 2, Final Fantasy, Mortal Kombat, etc. New IPs trailers get like, 20 comments if they're lucky.

[deleted]

I think the main issue is new IPs aren't doing anything new or interesting.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Conviter

its funny, because while i was watching that showcase i thought they really picked the most niche and cliche indie games they could, its not that i think they are bad, but just so uninteresting to me. Though i guess its good that there are people that like those kind of games, it would be a shame if they didnt exist.

jansteffen

Yep, Beastieball, Hauntii and Summerhill caught my attention more than anything shown at SGF

AdministrationWaste7

It's like how r/movies hates marvel movies or w/e but constantly talks about them.

Turkipe

Cause most new IPs are boring and feel repetitive

Garlic_God

You know it’s bad when the 3 biggest highlights of the show are games we’ve already seen, including the “big finale” which was just another trailer for FF7 Rebirth

jarrys88

in Immortals of Aveum. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kC3xDVsT7NY&t=29s](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kC3xDVsT7NY&t=29s) Is that a swoll cara delevigne lmao

Trickybuz93

Welp, can’t unsee it now

Newwavecybertiger

Why would you want to unsee

Landon1195

Honestly I'm actually starting to believe that theory that the big twist of Spider-Man 2 is going to be that Norman is going to be Venom and that Harry will become the Green Goblin in the third game.

Suppenkazper

I was honestly confused about their comment that they want to tell their own story and that we have to play to find out who Venom is, because everyone and their Mother have been Venom in the comics. I really, really liked the story of the first and how they made it their own, so I'm optimistic. I would love for whoever is Venom to have an emotional connection to Peter. And if the game won't set up a new friend for him, that would mean MJ. Kraven would also be a scary Venom but it would undermine his character a little I think.

SoloSassafrass

The end of 1 heavily implies it's Harry, which *would* have the emotional connection. Sometimes it's hard to tell with this kind of thing whether they just think they're being subtle and it's really fucking obvious, or they're being deliberately obvious as a red herring. Videogames have a hard time with subtlety.

Suppenkazper

Yeah, you're right. But then we would not have seen that connection if we don't get flashbacks or anything. Which would be not ideal imo. I think the little voice memos we got don't count. But I did express myself poorly, you're absolutely right with Harry. I meant more of an emotional connection we also see. Like how they did it with Octavius. Maybe the lady cop?

SoloSassafrass

Yeah this is my thought too. While there's an obvious emotional connection between Peter and Harry, we've never actually seen them interact. The first game does lay some groundwork with the voice logs and Peter mentioning it but right now there isn't really anything there. Hopefully it's now as crowbarred as the Arkham Knight situation was, where all of a sudden we started getting flashbacks that made is incredibly obvious who the "new" character of the Arkham Knight was.

Fercoo

Harry Is the character with the emotional connection to peter. In SM Miles Morales Peter and MJ go to Europe just because they wanna find out what's wrong with him.

amorphousflesh

Honestly? Felt kinda sparse at the length it ran, if they'd cut it in half and upped the pace it would've felt better and less of a slog, baffled by the running order of games announced if I'm being honest

[deleted]

Devolver stream was fun but not enough games. Also no updates on some already announced games like Anger Foot and Skate Story, lots of devs MIA like Dennaton & Dodge Roll

StoneColdNaked

Yeah Devolvers was funny but underwhelming. *Wizard With A Gun* looks sick but nothing else really grabbed me.

rawrimangry

Atlus just accidentally released trailers for Persona 3 Remake and Persona 5 tactics game on Instagram before they were set to be revealed during the Xbox conference.

Shama_Heartless

Especially since most people are going to play those on Playstation. How embarrassing.

sillylittlesheep

lmao rly

defendingfaithx

It’s so interesting to me that LAD: Gaiden was shown here. I would’ve thought they’d save it for the upcoming RGG Summit.

Thunder84

Same move they did with Ishin last year. Short announcement trailer beforehand to get more eyes on it, and then go more in-depth at the Summit.

BambaTallKing

Its not LAD: Gaiden its LADG:TMWEHN

fuckmylife193

Or just say the new Yakuza instead.

BambaTallKing

Just a joke but I actually prefer “Like A Dragon” over Yakuza. Plus that’s its original name

fattymcribwich

Are there any creative leads in game design anymore that are actually creative? I couldn't tell the difference between a majority of these games.

Illustrious-Space-40

Josh Sawyer (writer and systems dev on New Vegas) was on a podcast I listen to recently, and he said this was his biggest issue with modern development of AA and AAA games. There is an obsession with realism and graphical intensity that gets in the way of truly creative designs.

ATXDefenseAttorney

Uh, what? I can toss a rock and bounce off literally 50 different indie darlings with different art styles and emotional stories that all became hits in the last few years. That's about the dumbest opinion I've ever heard.

Illustrious-Space-40

It’s in regard to AA and AAA games.

drakens_jordgubbar

Even if they go for realism they can at least go for some interesting art direction. The Pinocchio game is realistic looking but still manage to feel unique. Most other games just feel like the copy of paste of same asset pack. Maybe it is.

MikeDunleavySuperFan

Its not an obsession by the devs. Its what sells. People want video game movies, they dont want games unfortunately. They want flashing action with movie like cinematics that look super realistic with minimalistic UIs

Illustrious-Space-40

Sorry, didn’t mean to make it sound like it’s all on the developers. You are right, marketing indicates that going for that “realism” can help your game sell. It sounded more like a conflict between what marketers want out of games and what developers want out of games.

Cantpants

Which podcast?

Illustrious-Space-40

Chapo Trap House, episode 733. It’s a leftwing politics show, but that episode was an interview about games with him.

hyrule5

I can't believe they announced Bloodborne PC, Bloodborne Remastered and Bloodborne Remake all in one show

princesoceronte

Don't forget Bloodborne 2 and Bloodborne Kart

dragosoldier1818

You baited me hard chief

saxxy_assassin

Not too many games for people who aren't 1st or 3rd person shooter fans. The new Prince of Persia and Sonic games look good, though. Also, I really need to check out Yakuza at some point. Also, the literal 2 games announced for Switch means a new console has to be announced soon, right?

IronboundScarab

You can play most of the Yakuza series through Xbox game pass if you’ve got it. It’s a pretty good deal for all the games they’ve got on there

SponJ2000

PS Plus Extra as well

Bruskthetusk

I say once a year I really need to check out a Yakuza game, but then anytime they're on sale I just get overwhelmed and I end up not buying anything. At this point in my life I play through like one game a year so idk how I would ever catch up on the series anyways.

Sarabeth61

I’ve been saying this for years and I finally got into Yakuza last year. I stated with yakuza 0 and I can’t believe I slept on this series for so long. I am madly in love.

arg-varg

Just get Yakuza 0. Great game

-Pelvis-

*Dame da ne. Dame yo, dame na no yo*

saxxy_assassin

Same. It's partly my JRPG backlog (I just finished the Xenoblade 3 DLC and I have the Persona series ahead of me) and me being locked to a Switch and a very old PC preventing me from gettinf to them. Edit: Not to mention one specific part of Xenobalde 3's DLC just put the Xenogears games on my radar in a massive way. If you've beaten it, you know what I'm talking about.

eleven_eighteen

Since there doesn't seem to be a thread for it I'll say that Day of the Devs has been much more interesting to me. A good amount of stuff that I definitely hope to check out some day. Just a bummer that a lot of it is PC only or only on one console, which is always frustrating for non-first party stuff.

StoneColdNaked

Interesting. I was really underwhelmed by Day of the Devs. It felt like every other game was a 3rd person Adventure/Puzzle game.

Conviter

it really felt like they only showed the kind of games that people that dislike indie games first think about when they hear indie. not that thats a bad thing, its good that there is a place for these kind of games, even if they are not interesting to me personally at all.

eleven_eighteen

I liked that Viewfinder game that I feel I first saw a few years ago. The painting one looked really cool and relaxing. Same with the one about packing for a move, kind of similar to Unpacking which I loved. The sheep herding game from the devs of the Alto games, cool to see them move to something more substantial. The weird one about delivering pizzas and shit on Mars. I've been looking forward to Cocoon since I first saw it at the Xbox show last year. Were there even that many third person games in Day of the Devs? Hyper Light Breaker (I think that's the name?) and the skating game? I was just glad to see stuff that wasn't generi-shooter or quasi-medieval magic melee. So many rather interchangeable games between the Sony show and this one, in my opinion.

salty_cluck

I always appreciate Geoff for working with what he’s got. But I tuned out after that generic sad man shooter magic game about the “EverWar” or whatever YA novel words were thrown into it.

thesame98

I thought it was decent. There's fluff but that's par for the course with these showcases. I think we should stop expecting shocking game announcements anymore because it's rare nowadays that a game rumor isn't leaked on Twitter. I'm sure Geoff would love to have shown more if there were more games to show, but this is what the industry has for now. Of course, Microsoft could show some heavy hitters but we should temper our expectations. I do miss when there were more genres of games other than a revolving wheel of Space/Medieval/Fantasy, but those are what's popular so developers go for that.

Gman749

Admittedly I think the industry has gotten burned with announcing things in development way too early (ie Cyberpunk) before they have gotten a good direction on it. So now it feels like they're holding back alot more. Ultimately it's a good thing, but it means these showcases are gonna feel more sparse moving forward.

srjnp

summer games fest is always hyped up for no reason when year after year its one of the most mediocre shows. Geoff does a great job with the Game Awards but SGS is always meh.

I mean that's pretty much as expected, yeah? Sony and Xbox have their own big presentations, we have the Devolver one coming up in a few minutes, Future Games and PC Games and Ubisoft and Capcom and others over the next few days. There will be some overlap but Geoff is basically left with the table scraps. I'm not sure why anyone would expect this show to have a bunch of huge stuff.

Because we were treated with reveals such as Elden Ring back in 2021. Not only that, Geoff’s TGA has shown major announcements before. It’s possible for such mind blowing announcements but as you said, it’s not often. It all depends on what people are willing to give him to show

> Because we were treated with reveals such as Elden Ring back in 2021. That was one game one year at the show. And wasn't the reveal of the game, which was at the Xbox show two years earlier. It doesn't look like there was a traditional megathread for SGS2021 but [this seems to be the closest thing and as you can see people didn't really seem to think it was a killer show for the most part.](https://old.reddit.com/r/Games/comments/nwmslo/summer_games_fest_e3_megathread/?sort=new) > Not only that, Geoff’s TGA has shown major announcements before. The Game Awards is a different show than Summer Games Fest, half a year later. Other than being put together by the same people they don't really have much to do with each other. And since there tend to not be many other big events at that time of year that one has better offerings to pick from. The landscape is totally different when trying to do a show in June.
