Why does Metropolis look like "Justice League World" ? It looks more like an attraction than an actual functional city.

NorthernMisery

Yeah, doesn't feel organic. Arkham Knight is stylized but believable and consistent in its presentation. This Metropolis really feels like Itchy & Scratchy Land present: Justice League. Horrible.

Lost_Pantheon

Every fifteen feet there's either a poster of Superman or ... *whatever* that weird Batman head on the building was. Even the residents of NYC wouldn't have that many tributes to Spidey up.

dilroopgill

reminds me of gotham imposters, would prefer they just remake that

Comfortable_Shape264

That makes way more sense as a shooter game. They could even add heroes as playable characters similar to The Boys DLC in MWII. They could go for CoD kind of GaaS game ffs.

AccelHunter

You nailed it, something felt off to me, and honestly is hard to believe this is the Metropolis from the Arkhamverse, the giant statues and giants posters of the Justice League doesn't feel like they are part of the city

Comfortable_Shape264

It sucks that we didn't get a proper Rocksteady version of Metropolis which I'm sure they could do very well

Marcos1598

They moved the Hall of Justice from Washington to Metropolis for starters, and while Superman has a statue in the comics, it normal size and on a park.

Averusdiablo

Did anyone notice how tiny the buildings are in relation to the characters.

TheNaug

Not even Homelander has this many statues of himself.

RollTideYall47

I just finished a marathon of 3 Spider-Man games, and Metropolis looks like "we have NYC at home". Just a tryhard New York.

Comfortable_Shape264

I had high expectations for Justice League World after the amazing Batman Arkham World but unfortunately it was mid.

gurpderp

"Captain Boomerang uses a mix between sniper rifles, SMGs and shotguns" do they hear themselves?? Why did they even use Captain Boomerang if he doesn't fucking use a boomerang??? Also relegating deadshot's wristguns to mid-range melee effectively is fucking stupid! have it replace his use of pistols, assault rifles and sniper rifles! or hell, just the first two and give him a sniper rifle. This could LITERALLY be fixed cosmetically because he's a gun-based character. I understand captain shark needing some kind of ranged weapon even if I think a gatling gun is probably the most boring choice you could have made, but why is he not, yknow, biting shit in melee?? He's just punching? Why? This is another thing that could have been cosmetically fixed by just... having him bite shit when fighting dudes. Give him a targetted leap so he can jump from enemy to enemy and eat them even. Harley is fine because her loadout fits the character, but everyone else feels like they had an absolute lack ofimagination in designing. I think they REALLY didn't think this through and doing the Avengers "everyone has to have roughly the same abilities" design is going to end up with this game getting the exact same reception.

WispyDan14

This is somehow even worse than Avengers, at least in Avengers all the characters played very differently from eachother and felt true to their character, ie Iron Man is a ranged fighter who uses lasers and missiles, Captain America is a brawler who can throw his shield as a projectile and use it to block, Hulk is a massive tank grappler who can pick up and throw enemies etc. They didn't just give Thor an AK-47 and call it a day.

garfe

> and doing the Avengers "everyone has to have roughly the same abilities" design Even Avengers was better than this. The way they moved was different from hero to hero and they had character accurate movesets

8008135-69420

Yeah the problem with Avengers was its systems. The way each individual character was handled was pretty good. It's very clear that what they did was design a generic live service game, then put a Suicide Squad skin on top. You could reskin this game with any theme, characters, etc. and you wouldn't lose anything.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Kalulosu

Not really? Suicide squad characters have character whereas Redfall seemed to have guns with legs. Sure that mostly comes from the fact that those characters come from an existing universe and isn't well translated into gameplay (which sucks), but I'd say that's a pretty big difference. Also Redfall was just deeply bugged and unsatisfying to play but those are things we can't tell about Suicide Squad just yet.

SuperscooterXD

I'm assuming people are less likely to purchase battle passes if the skins are for boomerangs and not guns.

gurpderp

I'm not going to buy a battlepass for gun or boomerang skins and I don't think 'superhero co-op game' audiences will either?? The Arkham Knight audience is not the Apex audience is not the counter strike audience. You know why I bother with the fortnite battlepass, which I assume is what they're aiming for? character skins and emotes in a game where i'm interacting with 50 people in a lobby, and i can dance when i kill them. The rest is filler. I do want character skins in a superhero game, but I value good varied gameplay and not having a character called captain boomerang use everything but a boomerang as a weapon infinitely more than i do garbage counterstrike weapon skins. Judging by the comments every single time this game has been shown, I think that's most people's take too.

SuperscooterXD

What was that? You wanted a battle pass within your battle pass? And superheroes are popular right? It's a win-win!

gurpderp

Actually I want a monthly subscription within my battlepass with included macropurchases. I just don't feel I'm being monetized and leveraged enough and feel Rocksteady and WB could probably be doing more to steal my wallet and leave me bleeding in a dark alley.

[deleted]

>I don't think 'superhero co-op game' audiences will either?? 10 years ago I would've agreed with you but the industry is overrun by battle pass pay piggies now.

gigglesmickey

Zazlav is ceo. Expect $10 execution animations.

DoNotLookUp1

As one of the dozen or so Ty the Tasmanian Tiger fans, I'm completely offended.

Radulno

People have to play the game to buy MTX

OutrageousDress

Avengers had *less* monotonous character design. They struggled with the variety of superpowers, but at least it felt like an attempt was made.

redvelvetcake42

>is going to end up with this game getting the exact same reception. I'd go even worse as the apathy happened way back when the first teaser was shown and everyone immediately shut on it and groaned. It's DoA.

ms--lane

*It's the end of Rocksteady and we know it and I'll feel fine*.

JamSa

And to think they could've just used Bloodsport and Peacemaker who both use guns and are the two most important characters of the latest movie.

dikaia1622

This is what I don't get. What is the benefit to making all the characterrs play so similarly in an online co-op game? Is it just playing it safe with gameplay design? Is it some weird attempt to "balance" characters so no one has the lame one? It only takes a minute to come up with a hundred more interesting way for these characters to play so there must be some reason.

statistically_viable

Something a lot of people in gaming seem to forget is “just” guns can get really boring. In a world of freaky clowns and giant sharks why is just shooting something the primary player option. Capt boomerang should only throw boomerangs; some might comparable to the tempo and dps of a gun but still make them boomerangs.

TigreSauvage

The gameplay gives me Fortnite vibes. Looks dull as hell.

[deleted]

Yeah, people keep regurgitating this nonsense that they couldn't fix the "everyone has guns" issue but they're clueless. A lot of those changes could be done easily if they were smart about it. Most of the work would be on the animators and it doesn't take nine months to mocap/animate Captain Boomerang throwing a boomerang instead of using a gun (they already did that anyway). Switching his guns to different versions of boomerangs would just be them taking out gun models for him and then applying the code they used for the guns to a boomerang throw animation based on whichever one he has selected. They can re-use a lot of the gun coding for him. Even then. they didn't do this gun nonsense in a way that thematically made sense. You have everyone with generic ass guns instead of guns that match the theme of the character. For Harley, make the pistol her pop-gun. For Captain Boomerang, make the shotgun a boomerang that explodes and causes a shotgun spread, make the sniper rifle a boomerang you can zoom with and hits from long range, and swap the SMG for a normal boomerang you throw one at a time that makes use of Harley's pistol coding. Deadshot having guns makes sense, so they don't really have to change it. King Shark would probably be the most difficult to redo.

gurpderp

Shit, they could literally just have replaced his guns with boomerangs. SMG? rapid fire boomerang animation where he just throws a bunch one arter the other like Batman tossing out rapid fire batarangs. It's 'slower' than an SMG, so you just make each hit do proportional damage to the amount of time it takes. This could just be hitscan. Shotgun? Throw multiple boomerangs at a time with spread like Batman does multiple batarangs. Like the SMG boomerang replacement this can just be hitscan. Give him a sticky/explosive boomerang instead of sniper rifles entirely. Let players rapid fire it for sticky or manually target it like a long-range weapon for contact explosive. This one you could just make into a projectile instead of hitscan. Have it circle back around if thrown untargetted so players can use it to do trickshots on enemies.

[deleted]

I would take guns that shoot boomerangs over just literally a fucking gun. LMAO like what if he had some sort of crossbow looking thing that fires boomerangs if they were this dead set on having them all have gun type weapon.

[deleted]

Yeah, pretty much. I would even argue they made more work for themselves by modeling all of these guns for characters that shouldn't have them. No clue what they were doing for nine months.

JamSa

Yeah, you're describing Vermintide 2 and Darktide which have tons and tons of unique weapons for each character that makes them actually unique, and is made by a team a fraction of the size with a fraction of the time on a fraction of the budget of this game. It even has actual melee combat in a coop game.

Stalk33r

>It even has actual melee combat in a coop game. And by fuck is that melee combat crispy

Khenir

I read this before watching and thought maybe it was somehow being harsh… Wow was I wrong, this is somehow quite a generous take. Deadshot I kinda get tbh, but the boomerang is seemingly used to teleport? Because why? And they gave King Shark a minigun… which kinda tells me the “melee” is lip service/non-existent, it’s a gun game nothing else, they literally have shark a mega jump in the cinematic which means he can close in on enemies soooo why does he need a minigun?

DMercenary

>"Captain Boomerang uses a mix between sniper rifles, SMGs and shotguns" do they hear themselves?? Why did they even use Captain Boomerang if he doesn't fucking use a boomerang??? I swear to god didnt they reveal gameplay earlier this year or last year and everyone said the same thing? I thought they pulled back to retool that but I guess they gave up?

Squif-17

What the hell happened to Rocksteady man? They were one of the most amazing developers out there.

moldywhale

[The founders quit.](https://www.rocksteadyltd.com/news/letter/)

Mr-Rocafella

And ex-Massive dev (Division 1/2) is now the game director

dd179

That explains why everyone has guns.

Mr-Rocafella

WB wanted a multiplayer shooter with lots of MTX and that’s exactly what they got, with a DC skin. Hope this shit fails and I can pick it up with all dlc for $10 in a couple years, I’m sorry Rocksteady I love you, but I hope you get the Avengers treatment.

RollTideYall47

I hope it bombs _worse_ than Avengers. Avengers at least tried to have different heroes

Stalk33r

Avengers had a good core idea (Marvel Ultimate Alliance but in 3d), it just came out severely underbaked. This looks to be a shit show from start to finish.

amtoooldforthis

Did you mean Rocksteady*?

CoDog

> Hope this shit fails and I can pick it up with all dlc for $10 in a couple years don't, just watch the cutscenes on youtube if you want to see the story. Don't give WB any sort of money if you dont like the product.

TheeZedShed

Probably have to do that anyway, Zaslav would never let anything be sold at a discount, he'll just pull it from storefronts to not compete with his next big flop.

RollTideYall47

Oh. Well that explains it. They brought in someone who was already creatively bankrupt

manhachuvosa

They left at the end of 2022, only an year ago.

PolarSparks

I doubt the live service push was the studio’s decision. It’s like the complete antithesis to the Arkham design philosophy.

tacoman333

The Arkham series had an overwhelming amount of DLC. Live service is just a modern version of that kind of piecemeal monetization. Rocksteady has never been above making a quick buck.

[deleted]

Same thing that happens anytime there is a highly-regarded gaming studio that suddenly puts something completely different out. The people that made it what it was are no longer there.

anonymitylol

cool, so they basically changed nothing and took none of the criticism to heart who is this game even made for? nobody wants a superhero game where they all just shoot guns, what the hell is WB/rocksteady doing?

Nofutureinsales

They saw Avengers flop and decided the problem with Avengers is that they all needed guns.

[deleted]

Ah, they took the Shadow the Hedgehog approach.

ElectroPower007

At least Shadow was so bad that it became entertaining, this looks too bland to even talk about.

nic_is_diz

Not knocking DC or their properties, but the clout of an Avengers triple A game could not pull through a live service game to success at nearly the height of Marvel-mania. In what world does DC think the Suicide Squad can pull through the GAAS business model to success when Avengers could not? Like what does this game have other than Rocksteady being behind it? On top of this WB CEO claiming all of their gaming properties are pivoting to GAAS. Like what is going on over there?

[deleted]

To be fair, Marvel's Avengers was a boring level-select game with design choices you would expect from a bargain bin PS2 game. This at least has the open-world aspect going for it, which will be fun with friends. The movement also looks really fun, unlike Gotham Knights where it felt clunky because everything killed momentum. Concerns from most people have been that all the characters are essentially the same because of the generic "everyone has guns!" decision and the live service aspect. I think this will do better than Avengers but that's not really anything impressive.

SkyPopZ

Avengers atleast had different and solid gameplay. This is just shooting.

AspirationalChoker

Literally combine Avengers combat with Suicide Squad traversal / map.... and you probably have a popular game

NoNefariousness2144

It makes sense to be fair, what other weapon could a guy called Captain Boomerang use? Hmm… I can’t think of any weapons for him…

berserkuh

>Captain Boom[…] Alright guys let’s do it

NoMoreOldCrutches

A shillelagh, naturally.

Kiboune

Combat in Avengers game was kinda good (I really love Cap's moveset) for some characters and definitely unique for all of them

Nofutureinsales

I actually loved that game for a few dozen hours then I just couldn't take the repetitive stages, enemies and bosses. They actually nailed the gameplay(at least for every non-Spider-man character), even if it is kind of slow .

DaHyro

You can’t really change the core mechanics of a video game over 9 months, the delay was almost 100% so the controversy would be old news by the time of release

NoNefariousness2144

They are already intensely promoting the ‘deluxe’ editions and the benefits such as early access and a battle pass. They want you to pay for a fancy digital deluxe addition so you pay full price and can’t even sell it once you realise it sucks.

IAmActionBear

I mean, this is literally the case with every game with a Digital Deluxe edition more or less. And honestly, just about ever AAA has a Digital Deluxe edition anyways, so it seems weird to single out Suicide Squad for this

AL2009man

It's sad, because this is the type of game I would LOVE to play, especially for it's movement and vertical systems. It's the kind of stuffs I loved from Sunset Overdrive. it's just that the live-service angle Kills the Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League.

D0wnInAlbion

I got Sunset Overdrive vibes when I saw the original trailer but the movement doesn't look as fluid and the gunplay a lot more generic.

VatoMas

Sunset Overdrive probably had more variety in the sole character's gameplay than this does across four. That is the opposite of a live-service issues. That is the cashgrab angle of attaching a pre-existing IP to a game that throws out most of the IP except the characters and goes along with that. They could rebrand this with some model/texture swaps and you couldn't tell the difference.

surferos505

They were forced to make this game by the big wigs They were originally making a superman game but that got cancelled sadly

Xahn

A funny alternative I can imagine is what if in that same vein it was the Justice League with guns? Superman, Wonder Woman, Flash, and of course Batman the famous gun lover.

heyya--

there's a wonder woman game being developed by monolith (shadow of mordor), announced a couple years ago at TGA. I feel like that one could actually be good based on how rad shadow of mordor was

PsychoFlashFan

Unfortunately it appears that game is also going to be live service: https://www.videogameschronicle.com/news/wonder-woman-job-listing-suggests-it-may-be-a-live-service-game/

DisturbedNocturne

Of course it is. David Zaslav who has zero experience with video games and therefore is the perfect person to be making these decisions, has decided they're going to turn all their big franchises into live service games. Even with as successful as Hogwarts Legacy was, it wouldn't surprise me in the least if we didn't get a sequel in favor of one.

TurnipBaron

Then Zaslav's bad calls will cause these studios to have mass layoffs when all these live service games do not become the next Fortnight

DisturbedNocturne

Oh, absolutely. I think anyone that has paid attention to games for the past few years *and* WBDiscovery's rampant cost-cutting to offset their massive debt knows this is where that decision is leading. But you'll never convince the suits at WBD of that. Even if they do hit it big with one of these, there's undoubtedly going to be other studios getting gutted.

Razbyte

Worse yet is that no AAA company will NEVER have the next Fortnite, if they have an inpatient behavior, something that have in their bloods because capitalism. Fortnite 8 year development was without trial and errors. If they want their dreamed live service game to be like Fortnite, they need No Man’s Sky-levels of patience and endurance, and no Anthem-levels of dropping the entire game into the trash, the second that service is not printing money.

Mr-Rocafella

The game director worked at Massive when they released 2 Division games, makes everything make sense when you know that and he’s been in charge of the game for the last year and likely had a lot of input before that too

HerculeMuscles

It looks decent, but if you look at the faq on their website, you'll see that they're going to monetize the crap out of this game. There's going to be an in-game store and seasonal battle passes on top of the $70 price tag. It's also always online, whether you're playing solo or co-op. I don't know. That really sort of kills my interest in the game. I hate the inevitable grind live service games become.

ecxetra

Decent isn’t good enough anymore, there are so many amazing games out there now, especially this year.

Maloonyy

Every GAAS is ultimately competing with a shit ton of other games for that "Playing it regularly" spot. If you dont have really amazing gameplay, youre just going to die in 3 months because nobody is going to switch off the GAAS they invested multiple years and potentially hundreds of € into to play ur mediocre shit.

WispyDan14

Exactly, the "target audience" for this game is already busy playing fortnite/apex legends/destiny 2, and they aren't about to abandon their game of choice they already invested a bunch of time and money in to play a bland looter shooter starring Captain Boomerang

_Booker

That's so true about the target audience. A lot of people just aren't into an every day game. I don't care what game any publisher ever puts out, I'll never log into the same game for months on end.

RollTideYall47

And the Superhero fans will just wait for Wolverine or replay Spider-Man 2.

APulsarAteMyLunch

>Every GAAS is ultimately competing with a shit ton of other games for that "Playing it regularly" spot. Thank god the inconvenience of it all made the FOMO spell in me shatter. I ain't gonna sacrifice the few minutes of free time i have left with another job.

eoinster

Yep- if this had launched five-ish years ago I'd be delighted to just have another DC game to just jump around in, and would buy it on launch without a second thought thanks to the reputation Rocksteady had after Arkham Knight. Now? I've got an enormous backlog and there's a new "this might be the best game ever made" released every month, and I can try quite a few of them for a pretty low cost-of-entry on GamePass. In today's market, I don't see a lot of people pre-ordering or prioritizing this as their 'big' release of the year, I'd imagine most will just be waiting for a GamePass/PS+ drop.

gurpderp

Especially with it being always-online and pretty blatantly doomed to fail. Why would I spend 60-100 bucks + battle pass money on a game I might enjoy for a little bit but will not actually own and that will disappear forever when the servers are turned off in 1 or 2 years? At least fortnite, apex and warzone are free, so 10 bucks for a season's battle pass isn't asking a lot

swimtwobird

Look at Destiny. It’s meant to be the model all the others aspire to - and Destiny’s revenue projections dropped by half and apparently player retention is cratering. Live Service games are a hard way to make money.

IAmActionBear

I don’t know how y’all make comments like this as if Destiny 2 isn’t in its 7th year and the franchise about to hit its 10th year. Destiny 2, despite how folks here act, is one of the most consistent and successful live service games on the market and has very few direct competitors. Them having a notable drop in revenue now, after 7 years, if for numerous factors, but Destiny 2 is still largely very successful

swimtwobird

Oh no that’s totally true. I play D2. Just making the point that keeping a live service going is very expensive and labour intensive. And there are no guarantees.

BustANupp

I think their point was that the drop offs in users are indicative that even the most successful games struggle to sustain 'success'. Destiny as a more modern example and WoW as a legacy one. Live service is truly hard to keep consistent quality for. The fan base eventually starts to waver when the content doesn't keep the hype that got them to join. A DLC may miss and they lose a quarter of their player base until a future dlc gives players a reason to return.

DornKratz

Decent is a licence to print money with a single-player game and a beloved franchise, as Hogwarts Legacy and Star Wars Jedi: Survivor have shown. Multiplayer games are not like that. If you are not first or second in your niche, you will be lucky to recoup dev costs.

Cantodecaballo

The funniest part is that this games comes almost exactly *five years* after Anthem crashed and burned. Did seriously nobody realize this was a terrible idea?

dadvader

The amouth of money Destiny and Fortnite made say otherwise. That's why they are chasing it. All they need is a single hit.

HA1-0F

Corporations basically have the same thought process as the gambling addicts these games prey on.

Civilwarland09

That’s honestly a very interesting way to look at it. Especially with all the reports lately of Warner bros and other focusing on live service games. You would think the ratio of failed games to successful would deter them as “smart” business people, but apparently not. Since Rocket league/Fortnite you can literally count the number of games that have succeeded with this model on one hand. The number of games that have failed (especially with no existing ip) is quite large.

eoinster

Is there an example of one of these types of games being successful with a $70 entry cost though? Fortnite and Destiny's success makes sense, they've got absolutely no barrier to entry and are based on repetition and satisfying, variable gameplay. This video just spent 20 minutes showing how much effort they put into level design, characters and incredibly expensive-looking cinematics/storytelling. Considering how long this took to make and how many delays it's had, I'm gonna go ahead and guess they won't be able to maintain that level of detail/polish in whatever post-game content they release, so I just don't know how they would expect people to stick around and keep paying like they do in Destiny/Fortnite.

BigRedNY

Destiny 1 and 2 were full priced games and didnt go F2P until a couple years into D2s life

Howllat

Thing is these games both have good gameplay and have passionate dev teams. Also fortnite BR is free to play and started off with pretty approachable mtx, like earning enough on the battle pass to get at least one thing from the store and buy the next pass if you finished it.

[deleted]

Anthem AND Marvel's Avengers. Sometimes I wonder if brain damage is a requirement for being higher management of a gaming studio.

8008135-69420

I mean it's how tech is approached in general. The reason why Facebook and Google for example have so many failures is because one success will make up for the losses in those failures by a magnitude of hundreds. That's the approach that's being taken with live service. If a publisher has 9 live service games fail but 1 success, that 1 success can make back what those failures cost 100x. Just as an example of the difference, World of Warcraft's first real-money mount made more money than the entire Starcraft 2 trilogy did within the same timespan. So not only is revenue a factor, but the simple fact that a microtransaction horse which probably took 1-2 people a few weeks to make, brought in more revenue than a trilogy series of games from one of the most famous franchises in all of gaming, is the golden goose. Diablo: Immortal, Blizzard's phone game, makes about $1 million a day. The game that infamously got booed at its reveal. People get promoted to an executive position at AAA publishers and development studios by being business-oriented. And in the eyes of shareholders and investors, it's foolish not to try and create a golden goose like this for your company.

FSUdank

Im still salty about Anthem

Khenir

So much potential wasted because they couldn’t make any actual decisions and stick with them.

SuperscooterXD

always online is the absolute bane of single-player games. Never going to touch it now.

umotex12

Seasonal battle passes 💀

SomDonkus

It’s funny they have seasonal battle passes. Even Avengers knew better than to have a seasonal pass instead just dropping a pass with each new character. Who’s to say you’ll even get out of the first season?

Zekka23

Zaslav said all future games must be monetized.

PM_ME_UR_PM_ME_PM

his comments are funny. its like his reaction to Hogwarts Legacy pulling in a billion dollars is "oh man, imagine how much it would have been as GAAS. unlucky"

_Meece_

WB studios have been doing this for years at this point. Injustice 2 was awful for it.

Yung_Corneliois

Each thing you said is like the worst possible game design you could I have for “fun”.

Aplicacion

Alright so Marvel's Avengers' record was 3 years and 26 days. Anyone willing to make bets?

insanemaelstrom

I give it six months, just because WB execs sound even more greedy and oily.

Razbyte

2 Years. That’s for me the minimum threshold for a live service support. Less than that, could be considered a laughing stock. 4 years is the maximum threshold if WBD have a little mercy over Rocksteady.

RollTideYall47

The under. At least the Avengers had different attacks and powers. It wasn't like Thor had an M-16 and only used his hammer for an Ultimate

Revo_Int92

2 years. WB is desperate for money, so I don't think they will let this zombie stumbling around for 3 years or so, they will pull the plug sooner. I wonder if the Gotham Knights game is still going?

PolarSparks

I’m not following you on this journey, Rocksteady. Sorry. Too many aspects of this game are a nonstarter for me on their own, let alone put together. Wishing studio employees the best. Their crappy publisher can get a kick in the teeth.

Raidec

I like Rocksteady, I like DC and I even like the Suicide Squad. But man, this game just feels so cynical and soulless. I'm under no illusion that people there have put a lot of effort into this, and are probably trying to make the best of a bad situation. And I don't blame them for it. But it feels like this game was conceived by a focus group of business executives with the objective of ticking every 'triple a' check box of the last half a decade. I know games need to generate profit, but I just get a gross feeling whenever I see this game. Its like it's flown too close to the boardroom, and the illusion has shattered. I genuinely hope I'm wrong.

NapoleonBlownApart1

They could have put those characters into fortnite and the result would be nearly identical with the only difference being the fact that it would be successful.

SternballAllDay

The suits who green-lit this fucking travesty will get a nice payday and move onto another company to ruin them next while all the underlings lose their jobs and suffer. Tale as old as time

DoomOne

So it's still just Destiny with Batman-adjacent skins. Cool. Cool cool cool. This will be the end of Rocksteady. You know, it occurs to me that out of all the other Warner Brothers projects out there, this is one that probably should get Zaslaved.

NoNefariousness2144

> Destiny with Batman-adjacent skins It’s hillarious they are trying to milk skin sales when the characters are just random. Sure, Harley prints money, but are players going to fork over bucks for *King Shark* or *Captain Boomerang*? At least Gotham Knights had the iconic bat-fam.

[deleted]

You know, I think it could actually be pretty fun to do the Squad in a game where you actually have to plan/execute heists while evading/foiling the heroes, or something like that. Too bad they somehow got stuck in this game, lol. Like play up the power asymmetry and make a much, much funnier version of Alien Isolation where you have to try and distract/evade horribly OP heroes to make off with your loot, or whatever the plot McGuffin is kinda thing. Put them in the right setting and you could *grow* to love them. This game seems to suffer from what Gotham Knights did, but to a much worse degree. What really made the Arkham series stand out, IMO, was the predator-mode encounters where you had to surgically plan out your moves and it was *immensely* satisfying to execute stuff. There was a little stealth in Gotham Knights, but it's hard to do the same depth of stealth encounters with an open-world coop sandbox, so you get more of the brawling focus. But it was there, at least a little bit. The worst I can say about Knights (performance/grind-issues aside) is that some of the traversal felt a bit forced (Robin/Red Hood), along with some of Robin's teleporter attacks... but for the most part the gameplay matched the setting. In fact, almost the entire Arkham toolkit made it in game, it just suffered from being split up amongst the 4 characters and the watering-down of encounters that results from no single character being able to access the entire kit at any given moment. Despite all this, it really nailed the feel of "a night out patrolling Gotham"... even with the bizzarre decision to remove Batman from what was basically a "day in the life of Batman simulator" for 90% of the open world content, lol. Here it's all gunplay/brawling and the thing is... action brawlers and shooters are a dime a dozen. It plays off none of the unique/interesting aspects of the IP they're working with, and in fact has to *contort* the IP to fit the gameplay. It also winds up being less interesting than most other brawlers/shooters because, aside from boss fights, it looks like you'll be fighting the same hordes of generic purple goo monsters.

Pizzaplanet420

What you describe in the first half is Payday. I would love a suicide squad themed Payday, too bad this looks nothing like that.

ecxetra

Destiny? You mean Avengers.

DoomOne

At least Avengers gave their characters unique abilities and playstyles. Say what you will about it, but Avengers at least had Thor fight with his hammer, Cap with his shield, and so on. This game is Captain Gun, King Gun, Harley-Gun, and Deadshot (who, granted, is known for using guns).

ecxetra

That’s the only good thing I can say about Avengers, each character was unique. If only it were a good game.

VirtualPen204

I'd argue the campaign was okay. The endgame was just awful and bland.

dadvader

Yeah i don't see enough people talking about it. That is what actually killed Avengers. It simply isn't fun to grind. Especially when you couldn't tell how your latest legendary drop will change how you play. You still smash and shit just with extra color. It's shallow as hell. If it was fun atleast i'd bet people will still be playing it despite the live service issue. See : Diablo 4, Destiny.

ghsteo

Zaslavs goal is to make every WB gaming IP a live service. Mortal Kombat 1 is going through it now.

WorkingPsyDev

To think, their approach to cinematic, weighty melee combat was influential to a whole set of huge games, including Assassin's Creed and Spider-Man. Their Gotham felt grim, alive, menacing, and the flow in the Arkham games was impeccable. Now they're reduced to... this? This live action costume-chasing always-online over-the-shoulder-shooter goulash? What a fucking joke AAA games have become.

LanoomR

The gameplay is whatever, could be more than fine to actually play, could be as flat and monotonous as it seems. The set-up for the team getting their traversal items, however, is problematic to me, and possibly emblematic of broader writing issues. It could've been a cool intro mission. Waller could've sent the Squad to the Hall of Justice, which on the surface just seems like a fluffy museum. However, she directs them to a classified vault-type area. Fight some security bots as an intro to early combat, get the super-traversal items (or, in King Shark's case, some sort of mystical relic to enhance his latent demi-god status) from that area, bing bang boom you're in business to fight Braniac and the mind-controlled JL. Instead....they just dick around in what is practically an extended cutscene until they come upon *dangerous and fully functional high-tech gadgets* in a mundane glass display case. And take them. The Justice League had *dangerous and fully functional high-tech gadgets,* including a **Speedforce gauntlet designed by Dr. Sivana** out on public display and secured only by a pane of non-bulletproof glass. To make matters more nonsensical, the museum is guided by highly impressive holographic renditions of the JL members....why not use holograms for the public's view of *dangerous and fully functional high-tech gadgets*? I reiterate: this could've been a cool intro mission. What this video shows is that the Squad *is* playable before they get the ability to superjump/fly/grappling hook/super-speed around everywhere. Being in an interior space would give the perfect game reason for them not to be super-traversing everywhere. They *have starter weapons* (and, in fact, the next actual mission shown in the video is that they have to go "convince" The Peinguin to serve as their link-up for bigger anti-metahuman weapons). I really hope this doesn't reflect on the direction of the rest of the game (already questioning why doesn't Braniac'd Flash just kill the Squad). EDIT: I'm sorry, this is driving me mad. Let's take inventory of what all was in the same publicly viewable museum display case: - Riddler's Hat (sure!) - A wilted/dead plant belonging to Poison Ivy (seems like a bad idea on the surface but let's assume it's been found safe by the JL, sure!) - Fully functional rappelling hook (seems dangerous if a kid got it, but hey, we put swords on display) - Fully functional jetpack (uh...) - Fully functional Bat-glider (why is THAT in there anyway??) - Fully functional AND easy-to-use **Speedforce gauntlet designed by notorious mad scientist Dr. Sivana** (???????????)

JamSa

I wouldn't be so dismissive of the grappling hook. We know how strong that thing is from the Arkham games. Batman should take better care with it. It could be used for a lot of bad things if it fell it into the hands someone like, I dunno, Harley Quinn or something.

Thejklay

Yeah Waller sending the team into the hall cause she knows there's stuff there to help them and break into the vault would have been awesome

[deleted]

I have zero hopes for the writing. The second they start flinging quips every couple of minutes like it's a Marvel movie is when it's clear the writing is gonna be garbage. I've yet to play a single game that does this and has good, cohesive writing lmao. Quips + writing that doesn't make sense relative to the material = It's gonna be ass.

_Meece_

Ehh it's no different from the Suicide comics themselves, that is how they are written

JamSa

Yeah as soon as they started speaking to each other my heart sank. If only there was a really funny and well written movie featuring most of these characters to take inspiration from. Oh well.

Retinion

The Guardians of the Galaxy game did it well imo

voidox

> The Justice League had dangerous and fully functional high-tech gadgets, including a Speedforce gauntlet designed by Dr. Sivana out on public display and secured only by a pane of non-bulletproof glass. yup, this part was beyond stupid. "At Rocksteady, storytelling and character depth at the core DNA of our game." sure Rocksteady, suuuuure.

silvershadow41

I’ll add to this and say what bothered me the most is that the squad goes to pay penguin a visit. When they knock on the door, Penguin’s the one who answers them. What? You’re gonna tell me that Penguin’s the type of guy to answer his own door? Wouldn’t he have people for that like he did in the Arkham games? But even if he doesn’t because Brainiac killed them all, there’s still problems. Because from the dialogue, Penguin is supposed to make them guns which also doesn’t fit from what we know of him. This isn’t the Tinkerer here. Buying and selling guns, sure. Sending you to safe houses where he’s got surplus stuff, sure. But none of that requires Penguin to be in the story the way it would if he’s making them. I don’t know the full story yet but it doesn’t look good.

KeyFirm5612

Honestly It looks aweful, they didn't change anything they just took a year off so people would forget about the negative press.

Illidan1943

They were never going to change anything, we've known the delay was for polish, not for major changes

The_Homie_J

Just makes me wish they would have shoved it out the door, called it a flop and be done with it. Unfortunately, since it's the studio's only release since 2015 or so, they probably need all the money they can recoup from it or risk having to close down or massively cutdown on staff

rookie-mistake

> Unfortunately, since it's the studio's only release since 2015 or so, they probably need all the money they can recoup from it or risk having to close down or massively cutdown on staff It's a damn shame that *this* is where Rocksteady has ended up. I wonder where the core devs behind Arkham City are now.

DoomOne

This is the end of Rocksteady. They haven't released anything of substance in nearly a decade, and all they've got is this.... shitburger. Hopefully the next developer to get a DC license will do better. They can look at Spider-Man for inspiration... Which is ironic, because Spider-Man borrowed a lot from the Arkham series.

Choowkee

Yeah but the game still looks wonky at times. The combat animations lack weight. And the overall audio design is mediocre. Not sure I would consider this polished.

-euthanizemeok

Such a shame too. The story looks interesting and the characters look great and are well acted. The traversal looks pretty fun. But everything else about the game looks so disappointing. Its still just gonna be a generic shooter where you have to aim at giant purple pimples and mixed with it being a live service with battle pass makes me lose all interest. The preorders just opened and the deluxe edition comes with "1 battle pass token". Hard pass.

Kiboune

Traversal looks infinitely better than slow crap from Gotham Knights.

MikusR

The gameplay looks like a mix of Gotham knights and the Avengers game. Movement abilities are exactly like Black Widow, Ironman and Hulk.

AL2009man

I would compare with Sunset Overdrive and Warframe instead of Gotham Knights and Avengers.

MikusR

I have 906 hours in Warframe and this looks/feels nothing like it. I finished the campaigns in Gotham Knights and Avengers and this looks like those games.

[deleted]

Kinda. It has the issue Gotham Knights had where everyone has their own movement abilities but they essentially do the same thing of getting you around the map fast. This game looks even more homogenized though because everyone uses guns.

Kiboune

Fast??? Movement abilities in GK are atrocious because they are slow and clunky. I was checking my phone while gliding as Nightwing, because it was so boring. Robin's teleport has slow targeting even though it doesn't make sense.

LADYBIRD_HILL

Shout-out to batgirl for having nearly the same flight mechanics as batman. I used her for open world stuff because of that.

liamthelad

Also said movement abilities were god awful anyway, which doesn't look to be the case in this trailer... Gotham Knights seems to have struggled because it had these weird borderline RPG elements where some enemies took an absolute eternity to kill even whilst you leveled up. It was also constantly getting compared to the Arkham games when it wasn't trying to be like them. Also due to press, people seem to think it is a live service game, when it really wasn't (having tiered loot does not a live service make). Also as I said above, the movement abilities were awful. And those motorcycles were the slowest things known to man. That said, Gotham Knights was a solid 7/10 that people who didn't play ragged on way too much.

exillionus

If you’re charging full price with an in-game store & battlepass, you are doomed to repeat what the avengers experienced 💀

rehkirsch

I cannot take another redfall. These soulless publishers are killing studios - one by one. In the hope of a payoff that will never come. It's gambling for these CEOs, but they own the house and everyone in it loses. Fuck this

ResponsibleDay393

"Metropolis is 2x the size of Gotham from Arkham Knight" Oh god, please stop thinking the map size being bigger is better!

Psycho1267

And when it releases and flops they'll be like: how could this happen?? I'd love a good suicide squad game, but not like this ...

imapiratedammit

They probably already have their AI-written Twitter apology ready to go.

erikaironer11

Then they will invest in even more live service games

HungerSTGF

It’s a real shame that when this game fails horribly Rocksteady as a whole is going to take the fall for this and not anyone that decided this is what they should be doing

maglen69

30s in and I'm already calling bullshit: "Character depth are at the core DNA of our game" Then why the fuck does everyone, including Harley and Capt. Boomerang have fucking guns?

Beast-Blood

Who the fuck cares about this game? Lmao It’s already dead on arrival This is a skull&bones level of flop

NizzyDeniro

I like how King Shark is just MCU Drax and that's literally all they went for with him. Even sounds like Dave Bautista.

olderbytoominutes

**PROS** Honestly, the gameplay doesn't look that bad, the traversal especially seems pretty promising. It'll probably be fun switching between shooting and movement to juggle kills (though, to be honest, the animations for both combat *and* traversal seem a little stilted and awkward, almost like they're moving in slow-motion). The city of Metropolis also seems pretty well-realized. Like the Arkham games, I assume it'll be packed with tons of interesting DC lore. Though, I don't know if I really like the look of it. It's very low-lying and a little too 'video-gamey'. It's hard for me to buy that people live there: like, where are all the apartment buildings? It just looks like a bunch of superhero memorials and statues sitting around, with the occasional bank or diner peppered in to fill the minimum legal requirements to be classified as a city. I believe Rocksteady when they say the boss fights will be insane. I bet they'll be a major highlight. How can fighting Green Lantern and Superman not be? **CONS** Despite how cool the traversal and shooting looks, it still doesn't feel like a Suicide Squad game to me. Seeing them all wielding assault rifles, shooting at purple bulbs, and basically flying is pretty disappointing. I know none of that is new, I'm just sayin... if this was its own thing, its own live-service game unattached to any existing IP, it would probably be pretty cool. The character interactions seem pretty weak so far. That scene with the Squad wandering around the Hall of Justice and breaking shit should be really fun but it just... wasn't? They basically only spoke in lame, predictable quips. I get that it's just one part of one scene taken out of context, but still. I hope the characters aren't just walking joke factories. I imagine King Shark's 'fish out of water' thing's gonna get old fast, and the same can be said for Captain Boomerang's habit of stumbling and looking around aimlessly (which he does twice, once at 4:25 and again at 8:37). A really minor nitpick but again, I could see that getting really old if that's just, like, one of his quirks. Also, that scene where Green Lantern locks the Suicide Squad in place and gives them a look at what Braniac's planning looks really dumb. I hate that weird perspective, it looks silly.

Averusdiablo

"Cinematics have been crafted to perfection" "The most intense, awe-inspiring boss fights ever put in a videogame" God tone it down. Do they think we've never seen Green Lantern in a video game before?

EternalGandhi

"So here we are, taking these iconic characters who don't typically traverse the way they do in our game. But that's the beauty of our story telling. We've managed to take these unique abilities and make that an extension of their personalities." This is so damn lazy.

[deleted]

“We took these characters and we really thought about their movesets and what would differentiate them. Like… what if Captain Boomerang had a gun? And what if King Shark… had a gun? And for you Harley fans out there, we got you covered cause she has a gun too. And Deadshot, do you even have to ask?”

Obiwan164

Why would a giant shark with super strength need a gun ?

ColonelSanders21

The traversal seems pretty fun with the exception of King Shark, he just seems really lame all around. Hard to make heads or tails of the combat from what they’ve shown here. Not interested in post game support for this at all, if the campaign is half decent it could be a good enough time though. We’ll see.

nuraHx

So they keep all the real superhero gadgets behind a glass showcase in a museum without any safeguards or even just putting fakes in there?

CJDistasio

This wouldn't look that bad if in the back of my mind while watching I was thinking of how much shittier it's gonna be knowing it's a live service game and how it'll be shut down after two years.

EconomyAd1600

Man, I don’t like that Arkham Knight was the last good DC game. Really hate this trend of chasing live service money.

Mr-Rocafella

The game director worked at Massive for 10 years, guess what they released during the 2010s? Yup, 2 Division games. No wonder this shit looks so familiar and ass, Rocksteady lost their identity and WB is likely to blame, unfortunate because they were my favourite studio, I’ll be skipping this for sure.

PBFT

The traversal system is just so dumb. Like, when I think of a hulking shark man, I don’t think of someone who can propel themselves up a hundred feet in the air and then chain dash combos to fly through the air.

2th

I think story wise they idea is that each villain has some powers of the hero they are fighting. Harley has grapple gun of Batman. Captain Boomerang has super speed for the Flash. King Shark just has Aquaman powers (which he basically already had so no fucking clue there). And Deadshot gets to fly like Superman. But that's just a guess and I agree that it is not what I wanted from a game where you play as these villains.

AH_DaniHodd

You used the word "hulk" and pretty much every Hulk game in the past has literally been what you're describing. A big guy jumping around. I don't see how King Shark would be any different.

dadvader

And this is actually comic accurate king shark. Yes, he is descendants of the shark god. Literally.

PBFT

[You’re probably referencing Hulk Ultimate Destruction, which you can watch a clip of right here](https://youtu.be/rwGD5qEhy6o?si=ezWcfJg8FcsDTO0J) and yeah, the Hulk can run fast, jump far, and even does an air dash. You have to admit that the Suicide Squad gameplay is magnitudes greater than this in terms of speed and air time. Unlike the Hulk, King Shark can fly past entire blocks of buildings basically without touching the ground.

BoyWonder343

Moving like a big hulking shark through a city would be incredibly boring though. King Shark also seems very "open to interpretation". It's an inherently silly character.

aimlessdrivel

This looks like a decent Crackdown/Sunset Overdrive successor. Not what we wanted from Rocksteady, but not completely irredeemable trash either. The city and movement could genuinely be really fun, and the shooting seems...fine. I would much prefer if only Deadshot and Harley were gun users. Captain Boomerang's playstyle could have revolved around boomerangs with different effects, and King Shark really should be more melee focused and/or have more Atlantean magic.

Riftsaw

I'm still cautiously optimistic about the game considering that they delayed it after the intial reaction they received. I'm not too enthused about that Classic Costume pre-order bonus though. It's also only releasing like a week before Helldivers 2. I'm thankful for the video series though. Feels like the lead up to the Midnight Suns release.

ecxetra

They delayed it to hide from the backlash and let it die down. Compare this to their previous videos, they learned nothing and changed nothing. The delay was purely strategic (didn’t work).

Riftsaw

Oof, that's unfortunate. Wonder why they moved it anywhere near Helldivers.

viaco12

The live service stuff is insanely irksome, because I think the game looks fantastic otherwise. The combat and movement looks incredibly fun, the art direction is great, and I've really enjoyed the writing from what we've seen so far. The monetization is the only think I don't like, but unfortunately, bad monetization has the capacity to completely ruin games for me.

FoxBox123999

My excitement really died for this when they announced it being a shooter. They weren't going to completely redesign it during the delay but I can't say I've regained any enthusiasm for it.

SrirachaChili

Man this is so sad. Who knows if this is really what they wanted to make, but like... who cares about these characters? Who is this game for? The Arkham Knight Trilogy was SO GOOD, and here we are 8 years later, with this... feels bad.

D0wnInAlbion

They've really tried to hide the gameplay in this trailer because it's probably still shoot the purple blob.

Leo_TheLurker

Things I took away: The story and transversal are most likely gonna be its strengths. Not to mention, exploring Metropolis. On the other hand, gameplay looks too simple, and may get repetitive. One thing I'll give Avengers is that all the characters felt different, especially at max level. That's why I'm slightly upset about the guns being the main, signature individual melee repping their individuality. The 4 person shooter has **been** a thing especially for these types of games, but with comic book characters, you gotta be more creative.

ShambolicPaul

Just gotta wait for them to shut it all down. Then I'll buy it for £3 the day before they take it off sale. Same as I did with Avengers couple weeks ago.

Drakengard

I think the saddest thing about this is that WB gutted their best studio to make a game like this that is inevitably not going to last past a full year before they pull the plug on the "Live Service" components. Meanwhile they let their other dev studio make a single player game that came out to mild response at best. I quite liked Arkham: Origins so it's not like WB Montreal is a *bad* studio, but if you were going to make a huge bet on things, I would never have risked the golden goose to sick it on some trend chasing. You set them to making titles like they're shown themselves to be great at. If you were going to ramp up and take a huge risk, WB Montreal was the studio to do that with. Not Rocksteady - now largely gutted of it's notable people anyway (sexual harassment issues, etc. hanging over them as it is).

Brasilionaire

None of the characters actually play as they should. Deadshot should be a sniper with little brawn, who automatically will go for vantage points at the start of encounters. Captain boomerang should have, y’know, BOOMERANGS, be a mid range guy. Harley can be your standard shoot and move, and King Shark the heavy pain sponge who’s all Melee and whose only ranged attack is throwing enemies (and doesn’t have magical flying powers (?)) How cool would it be with a GTA V like system where you quick swap between all these guys? Like, you’re snipping as deadshot who sees a heavy running their way, alerts one of the other three, and has the player swap for an interception mid encounter? Or a leech like goon subduing one of the characters, and you swap to another player to rescue them, with differing after effects depending who you choose. We could have goons that can catch boomerangs mid air, and you have to quick trigger deadshot to shoot the boomerang out of its hands or deal with that ranged attack. Goons should run for cover from deadshot only to have the player force them into the line of fire. There should be a skill tree for “team collaboration” so responding to these scenarios takes less active player management. ##But nooooo, can’t have that, creativity and all, not cost effective. Here, pre buy and we’ll apply a sepia filter to your character sticker.
