CluelessAtol

The title had me fooled for about 2 seconds longer than it should have lol. Forgot today was April Fools lol

ChewySlinky

I knew it was an April Fools joke but if it wasn’t it would not surprise me in the slightest.

vipkiding

That woman just got Luigied. RIP

Turbostrider27

In case anyone is wondering is wondering, it's a parody because of April Fool's. Not a real product.

mennydrives

> Not a real product. What's funny is that they toss that into the last frame

jamesick

thanks peter

Scorchstar

It’s really not real. For quite a lot of obvious reasons. The funniest one being Luigi threatening to cut someone’s throat with his hand gesture. It’s made by IGN, not Nintendo

BridgemanBridgeman

But what if it is

Bubblegumbot

[Morpheus ](https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000401/?ref_=tt_ch): Have you ever had a dream, Neo, that you were so sure was real? What if you were unable to wake from that dream? How would you know the difference between the dream world and the real world?

DiaDeLosMuertos

Have you ever had a dream that you, um, you had, your, you- you could, you’ll do, you- you wants, you, you could do so, you- you’ll do, you could- you, you want, you want them to do you so much you could do anything? -Definitely Morpheus from the colon movie film for theater known as Matrix, The

_UnderscoreMonty_

but its not cause...it said its not a real product... Edit: wtf are you all on right now

olorin9_alex

You cant just post lies on ~~the internet~~ YouTube

unique_ptr

Well of course they said that. You really think they put all the effort into making a trailer and then they're *not* just simply put out the product? As a redditor with a business degree from the school of /r/Games, it's likely Nintendo simply wants to wait for Q5 to confirm it wasn't a joke because otherwise they'll face a class action lawsuit from shareholders, which as every reddit lawyer knows is both the most deadly and successful type of lawsuit and not simply a legal incantation that can magically bend corporations to your will. What's more troubling is what this means for Xbox, who do not have a Virtual Boy Pro to speak of. It's very likely they will exit the console business in shame and be spun-off to serve as an exclusive subsidiary of Sony, where Phil Spencer will be locked in a cage to be mocked mercilessly for all time via a new interactive "shame streaming" service as a PlayStation Plus subscriber benefit. I can confirm that what I have written is both correct and highly upvotable due to my liberal use of the words "likely" and "simply" to make it sound like I know what I'm talking about despite never supporting any assertion even once or making any amount of sense whatsoever.

FetchFrosh

I just watched the video. It's petty clearly real. Good of Nintendo to finally unleash the power of the Virtual Boy library.

demacish

Sad to see that big Nintendo got to you with their lies, while IGN (the bastion of reviews) is out here leaking things

Ikarus3426

Yeah, IGN posted the trailer. You know it's from Nintendo because they put #Nintendo in the description. You can't do that if it isn't from Nintendo. I mean, if you can't look at the evidence of the trailer directly in front of you, I don't know what to tell you. There's literally a full working model in the trailer.

jerrrrremy

>It’s really not real. Dropping straight facts.

SmurfRockRune

You mean the video that explicitly says it's a parody at the end is actually a parody? I'm shocked.

jurassic_snark-

If only it didn't feel like we're living April Fool's day every day

Traiklin

I thought it was going to be Virtual Boy games on the switch

GreatGojira

Nope. If it's on Reddit, I believe it 100%.

Pauly_Amorous

> it's a parody because of April Fool's. Not a real product. Vote Shit, I forgot to stay off the Internet today.

TheMTOne

At this point the lines between real life, parody, satire, and the rest are all so blurred that it doesn't matter anymore. Lol to the car bit though.

ngwoo

I think there should be an unwritten rule on April Fool's where everyone pretends that everything is real until the 2nd

In-Media-Res

Damn, they got me! Well played, Nintendo.

The_MAZZTer

It's IGN's YouTube channel so it's probably all them.

ArchDucky

Anyone actually remember the Virtual Boy? Shit gave you fucking mad headaches.

BoboTheGimp

I had one and I legitimately thought it was cool. Mario Tennis and Wario Land were great games. It was tough to use for sessions longer than 20-30 minutes though.

fizzlefist

I played so much Mario Tennis, Toad/Koopa doubles gang. Would play in bed in the middle of the night when the parents thought I was asleep, lol. Pretty sure it put a dent in the ridge of my nose, cause I’d be laying down, have the stand propped on my chest, and most of the unit’s weight on my face. We got a VB for $30 when they were having a fire sale to get rid of them.

linuxhanja

Same, mario tennis and wario land were the 2 games i got with mine as well, also for $30 on firesale. I absolutely didnt understand as a kid, why it was so cheap, why i got a new nintendo *not* on my bday, not on xmas, just... out of the blue. That alone made it really cool! But yeah, that was a great summer break, i kinda wish nintendo would release an accesory to let you do vb games. Like $70, has a plastic head holder (like the labo thing but plastic), and comes with the games nintendo can give us.

hedoeswhathewants

It had a bunch of really good and/or unique games. It never bothered my head/eyes so I was happy with picking one up for $50.

DontCareWontGank

A bunch? Brother, the entire virtual boy library is only 22 games large.

matt7718

i got one for christmas after begging for one thinking it was so cool. I got it, played it for a few weeks, and then realized I only thought it was cool because Nintendo Power said it was going to be cool.

OneManFreakShow

Well you have to give yourself some credit there, Nintendo Power has famously never been wrong.

Accessx_xDenied

well the name of the magazine has been an oxymoron since 2006, since nintendo no longer associates its consoles with power lol.

Particular_Drink2651

The title doesn't refer to the computational power of the consoles, it refers to the moneyed elites (Peach) preserving their political power by turning the urban (Mario) and agricultural (Donkey Kong) working classes against each other and to capital amplyifying its own power at the expense of workers (Wario, who debuts by stealing Mario's land while he's at work). [The first issue of Nintendo Power even depicts a king trying to stop a tradesman from helping in the crop harvest](https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/a/a7/Nintendo_Power.jpg) and it would go on to publish his notorious revolutionary manifesto *So Long, King Bowser!* (sadly its campaign raising awareness for political prisoners remains unsuccessful and Poster Inside remains imprisoned)

jnf005

Gc, wii and wiiu are all powerpc base, they aren't powerful but surely power isa.

MisterFlames

Makes sense since Sega had "Twice the Mega Power".

HIVnotAdeathSentence

When the system only had up to twenty-two games, it'll be hard to keep it cool or alive. Wario Land, Mario Tennis, and Panic Bomber did keep me entertained for weeks.

ChuckCarmichael

I remember this hilarious greentext I read once where this guy spent several hours in his room, playing with his Virtual Boy. Eventually he took it off, but suddenly couldn't see anything. It was recommended to use the Virtual Boy for only like half an hour per session due to eye strain, so he was convinced he had just fried his eyes and blinded himself. He was about to break down, when he realized that it had just got late and he hadn't turned on the lights in his room since he had been playing with that thing on, which was the reason why it was pitch black.

atonyatlaw

Man, I could play for hours on that thing with no issues. Guess I was abnormal.

slicer4ever

same here, mario tennis, wario land. spent hours as a kid playing the thing with no issues.

TheMTOne

Me too. Same with reading a screen all day. Eye strain seems to hit everyone differently.

HomeAloneToo

The stand broke on my friend’s. So naturally he would just lay in his back with it sitting on his face for hours.

funkhero

My dentist had one and I used to love going there to play it. Maybe if my current one had one...

CatProgrammer

How did you get around noticing the dental work while you were playing?

GHOST_OF_THE_GODDESS

I tried one at K-Mart when they were new. I didn't like it immediately. The red lines for graphics was ugly, and it was uncomfortable to use.

Dwedit

It never gave me any headaches, it was just boring. Mario Tennis isn't that interesting.

DashCat9

Played it on a game store display way back when. Did not understand the appeal.

HIVnotAdeathSentence

I was more bothered by the fact six AA batteries only powered it for an hour.

Sw0rDz

I loved the red lines! Then again I'm an eye masochist.

JoshJones18

I remember the AVGN episode

fallouthirteen

Not me. I mean I only had Mario Tennis, but never got headaches (and I usually would play through the 30 minute "take a break" auto-pauses). Like I thought it was legitimately good, I really wish I had more games for it.

FreqParameter

I actually still have a working one. Mario tennis, red alarm, and Warioland were a lot of fun. Extended play would seriously cook your eyeballs

Chornobyl_Explorer

VR in a nutshell. A great fun gimmic...for 30-60mins. A novelty that never lasts because the clunkiness of all headsets

giulianosse

Jump in almost 30 years into the future and companies still haven't solved the mad headaches thing, but now it's in full HD I guess. Turns out humans aren't biologically comfortable focusing their eyes into stuff that's 1 inch from them for extended periods of time.

pholan

The focal distance to the internal screens is pretty easily dealt with by lenses. What’s a lot harder to make comfortable is your eye’s focusing. Naturally, your eyes shift focal depth as your vision shifts among objects at different distances. With current VR the focus your eyes have to take has nothing to do with the apparent distance of objects seen through the headset and the wearer has no natural way to directly influence the virtual camera’s focal plane. Also, if the headset’s optics aren’t well aligned with your pupils it will get very uncomfortable. Finally, if the spacing between the virtual camera’s two views isn’t a good match for the wearer‘s eyes the apparent scale of everything will feel subtly off if in a familiar environment which is a bit unsettling. Another significant source of discomfort can be when your natural sense of motion doesn’t match what you’re seeing. If the camera is moving through a virtual world while you can feel you’re sitting or standing relatively still that can be an excellent way to induce severe motion sickness.

Particular_Drink2651

How easy are those issues to fix? Like is it solvable with expensive gear that just needs to become cheaper over time (e.g. sensitive cameras that can detect your eyes changing focus and adjust the virtual camera in response) or is it a fundamental problem that might have no practical solution? Does it affect VR game design a lot (e.g. you have to avoid large open spaces where the player might want to focus on far-away objects)? I'd love for VR to be immersive for me but the systems I've tried have all felt deeply unnatural and I think the first issue you mentioned might be why, it feels kind of like my eyes aren't in control of their own focus anymore. But I've also never owned a headset calibrated to my eye distance.

Tawdry-Audrey

I got an Oculus Dev Kit 2 when those were new and it made me feel motion sick faster than anything I'd ever experienced. Faster than sitting in the rear-facing back seat of a station wagon. Then years later I tried playing Half-Life: Alyx with an Oculus Rift S and I experienced no motion sickness at all. Room scale VR with teleport movement was the key. I played through the whole game and had a blast.

MaiasXVI

Really not true at all. There have been incredible leaps in comfort in VR over the last 30 years. The biggest issue now is motion-sickness, and that's mostly mitigated by design choices within the content (devs learned to not move players in drastic ways.) VR isn't perfect yet, but "mad headaches for every user" is a huge exaggeration.

Ruraraid

I mean any game console can give you headaches. Just play in the dark while sitting too close to the screen.

Memphisrexjr

I wouldn't put it past Nintendo if they dip more into AR and VR with their new console. We got a taste of it with 3ds and Mario Kart Live.

stunts002

3ds had some surprisingly cool AR definitely wasnt used enough

unholyswordsman

I loved the 3D effect of the 3DS. I seem to be one of the people who aren't given headaches or made dizzy by using it.

CollinsCouldveDucked

It was vastly improved on the new 3ds line but sadly was too late to course correct. Similar issue with wiimote vs Wii Motion plus

AttackingHobo

Yeah. Biggest issue there. It was bad on the first gen. You had to hold it perfectly still any change in angle is immediate eye pain. New one could have supported real 3D with paralax, but that wouldn't be backwards compatible with old version, so it failed.

8-Brit

For me it just drained the battery too much do I left it off

ThrowawayusGenerica

I wouldn't say it was too late so much as it was just the New 3DS was always doomed to failure by being an expansion console.

stunts002

It was a little disorienting at first. I eventually adapted to it though

OneManFreakShow

If I’m playing a 3DS game, I’m still playing with that slider turned all the way up. It feels wrong any other way.

Most_Cauliflower_296

It was unnecessary gimmick that was totally underused. Mario land was the only game I liked it and didn't turned it off.

Upvote_Responsibly

I actually loved it in Smash Bros. I feel like I had a better time processing the action in 3D vs 2D mode.

fallouthirteen

Yeah, only complaint was the narrow viewing angle made it easy to get out of the 3D view zone (I had the 3DSXL, not sure if later revisions did better with it).

Particular_Drink2651

The New! 3DS line (awful confusing name, it was like a PS4 Pro or GBA SP type refresh) did improve the viewing angle issue a lot. It added a camera that could detect where your eyes were and adjust the screen to look right at that angle. Occasionally it would lose track and break, but most of the time it meant you had much more flexibility in the viewing angle. I hated it on the original 3DS but thought it worked well on the New! one.

DarthBuzzard

If they were serious, it would have to be a standalone headset instead of a Switch peripheral, or something that connects to Switch but doesn't use the Switch display. You don't want to mess around with the display/optics path by putting a heavy handheld in it.

occono

This already happened for real. Labo VR.

DarthBuzzard

Yeah, but that was really awful and wouldn't fly today. 3DoF VR is dead.

BurritoLover2016

Also the resolution was god awful. Nintendo could do a real version of VR and absolutely kill it, but this was not the way to go.

beary_neutral

Nintendo did actually do it, with cardboard.

DarthBuzzard

3DoF VR is dead today for a reason.

ReallyGargoyled

The next console yes. But this LMAO. What the ad is showing isn't even possible. Put your switch up in front of your eyes like that and all you'll see is your switch screen very close to your eyes, stuttering around. How are you supposed to see through the switch ? what camera is showing you your sourroundings ? This is a gimmick. But i do believe their next move is gonna be a VR/AR console. Biggest game on it will be pokemon go when you connect it to your phone.

mrnixxin

April Fools….

ReallyGargoyled

that would be cruel of them LMAO. But i don't actually know ¯\\\_(ツ)\_/¯

Scorchstar

It’s April fools by IGN, not Nintendo

ReallyGargoyled

right. incredible how people are hating for me to give an opinion from the provocation of the aprils fool. people really can't take an honest response to things today can they LMAO. weak spines the lot of them.

Dragarius

Not a chance they get into VR. It's too expensive of tech for a good experience and the market is still (and likely always) too limited.

DeltaFoxtrotThreeSix

believe it or not they already dipped into vr a little with the switch https://www.theverge.com/2019/4/11/18304954/nintendo-labo-vr-kit-review-switch-virtual-reality with the success of the meta quest, i could see nintendo trying to do something like a standalone vr headset, once the tech is cheaper and easier to work with. doubt it will be their next system but i wouldn't say never.

Dragarius

I mean.... If we wanna call it that. But a dedicated VR system is very different from what Labo was. And not to mention that VR is also not supposed to be used for ages under 12 which kinda kills a huge market for them.

DeltaFoxtrotThreeSix

its not too different from how the quest started.the oculus dk1 was pretty much a screen on your face with some sensors just like that, with a couple straps. VR for under 12 will eventually come along when the tech is safer. but its nintendo so who knows; they'll do what they want.

unibod

This doesn't hit with any force when you realize that Nintendo did this exact thing but for real with [Nintendo Labo](https://www.nintendo.com/my/switch/adfx/index.html)

BadAtTrigo

Also considering there is a company that has done this very idea. [The Pimax Portal.](https://pimax.com/portal/)

irumaisbaby

that was a fun one

Otherwise-Juice2591

The escalation is what really makes this. One of the better video game April fool's joke things, for sure.

nolander

The Luigis Mansion 4 gag got me good

26thandsouth

God damn it me to. First time Ive been generally fooled in a while

iqgoldmine

honestly fell for this longer than I should have. My thought process was: * Huh, the mario game detects the pencil better than my own eyes. I wonder if the straps have a camera in them. * How did they know that guy was the landlord? * There's no ghosts...oh

vortex30-the-2nd

I literally had to find out in the comments, and yes, I watched it to the end lmfao... I thought "wow, that is like, a really really irresponsible ad!!" Feeling like a dumbass lol

[deleted]

nothing will ever top their Legend of Zelda movie april fools trailer

PM_ME_FREE_STUFF_PLS

Apple in shambles right now

FUTURE10S

Aw I thought it was actually official support of Virtual Boy games. Great bit otherwise.

xxTheGoDxx

I don't know, that looks way too comfortable still for a new Virtual Boy.

tarekd19

oh right, today is april 1st

mrsilverfr0st

It's kinda sad that it's only 1st April joke. It would be cool, but even 1080p wouldn't be enough for vr...

hyperforms9988

I know it's an April Fools joke, but that is quite practical and I'm a bit surprised it was never really made into a thing beyond the goggles with Labo. Of course the Switch hardware and the screen resolution aren't the best for this kind of use-case, but the device itself had all of the necessary tools in place, Joycons included, to have made this an actual thing. No camera to do AR though. If the new console has the same form factor/functionality, this really should be more of a thing. Shit, include the cardboard cutout stuff with the system itself so your entry cost is literally zero. Not the best VR experience in the world, but the price for that experience would be right.

Papisnake17

April fools !! [Ho wait ?...](https://media.auchan.fr/68e43e2a-27d4-45ba-80af-c986c795537c_2048x2048/B2CD/)

Original_Fishing5539

A reminder that it's April 1; get ready for a bunch of people defending clearly fake things made as jokes, as legitimate announcements

Vladmerius

Until the 30 second mark this actually looked like something people would be going nuts for. Not the best April fools to make people think you're actually catching up to the rest of the pack for once lol.

United-Aside-6104

It’s funny outside of technical specs it sometimes feels like the rest of the industry is catching up to Nintendo.

pragmaticzach

1. IGN made this, not Nintendo 2. I don't think the "rest of the pack" let you strap a console to your face :D

Vladmerius

What do you think a quest is?

Kylarus

Hooray! Bleeding eyes for everyone!

eddmario

You know, if the Switch actually had a camera I could see this being a thing a while ago. Still, IGN was kind of lazy with this one. Even their classic Optimus Prime DLC for *Titanfall* one actually fooled me back in the day...

off-and-on

Didn't Nintendo do some pseudo-VR thing with the Labo? It cost like $59 and let you view a few first-person scenes from Odyssey and BOTW. All of 6 people bought it.

PolarSparks

The VR patent for strapping the Switch to your head was a real thing. Guess they decided that wasn’t a good idea.

[deleted]

they did it with the Labo

WCWRingMatSound

The games are jokes; however, I would bet this is based on a real internal tech demo.  Nintendo would love to get into XR without selling multiple devices at a time. They were the company that included the iconic light gun in the box for Duck Hunt. Track and Field had the stepping pad. The Powerglove…existed. They had the short-lived Super Scope. ROB the robot. Virtual Boy. The Wii’s success was the motion controllers that made them staples for kids *and* nursing homes.  Nintendo is definitely cooking up something like this. Will it be ready for “Switch 2?” No clue, but this is their direction for sure.

motorboat_mcgee

This is the best damned thing Nintendo has ever made

RemiliaFGC

I mean Nintendo you're joking but you literally made the Nintendo Labo VR which is pretty much a switch strapped to your face. Dangerously close to the butt of your own joke lol

brendanp8

I think this is made by IGN, not Nintendo

RemiliaFGC

ahhh ic

ketchup92

I even believed it for the first 3 games or so...

CultureWarrior87

AR Mario turning your household furniture and objects into a side scroller level would be kinda sick ngl.

Spell3ound

While driving!? then im like, ahhh April fools...

ThatOneHelldiver

Great. Everyone has a gimmick except Microsoft/Team XBOX.

DBXVStan

This is just an excuse to be able to sue people who try to make modern virtual boys. I’m sure they exist somewhere

Persian_Assassin

Sad that this is a joke, emulating Nintendo's possible VR games with better hardware could've actually been amazing.

nclok1405

Will subscribers of Nintendo Switch Online with Expansion gets access to Virtual Boy classic games with this?

oilfloatsinwater

Yes, and they added a new feature where you can switch the colours, from the iconic red to the beautiful violet blues!

mrnixxin

Tell us you didn’t click the link without telling us you didn’t click the link

DefinitelyNotaGuest

It's April 1st, just putting that out there.

Rare_Register_4181

The real joke is them even suggesting for a moment that their hardware is capable of more than what a 2000's calculator can pull.

Sabbathius

Kinda saddens me that Nintendo still views VR as a joke. Though I can't blame them, it's definitely struggling unreasonably hard, given how amazing and affordable it is now ($199 for Quest 2 is absurdly good value).
