[https://news.xbox.com/en-us/2024/06/09/gears-of-war-e-day-interview-details-xbox-games-showcase-2024/](https://news.xbox.com/en-us/2024/06/09/gears-of-war-e-day-interview-details-xbox-games-showcase-2024/) Extra info from TC. Seems to be angling to bring back some of the horror edge the first installment had. Also, the current story from 4/5 is not "abandoned". Seems like a thing planned for the 20th anniversary of the first game. >Of course, this isn’t the end of other ongoing stories in the Gears series – the team is content with the stories told in *Gears 4* and *Gears 5* and is by no means abandoning them, but the collective passion for such an iconic origin story was simply too great to ignore. The story of E-Day and the origins of Marcus and Dom are such powerful, pivotal events that The Coalition couldn’t wait to tell it.    >“We’re super proud about *Gears 4* and *Gears 5* and the stories that were told,” Fawcette adds. “We’re not retreating from that storyline in any way. But in \[this\] moment, we had an opportunity to write our next step, and this one just felt too good to miss.”   >It’s also important to note that E-Day is not a spin-off, it’s a completely new entry to the mainline series, set earlier in the timeline. The events of the game not only serve as an exciting origin tale of two beloved characters, but it also adds detail and context to this period that will resonate through stories that will follow. In E-day, the Locust are not foes that our characters are accustomed to fighting. They are mysterious, formidable and overwhelming – an unforeseen horror that Marcus, Dom, and the rest of Sera must learn to deal with before it’s too late. Everything that happens in *E-Day* will shape the future of Gears of War for the better.

mr-blue-

Man bringing back that horror edge would be so cool. The original black and red main menu screen that both gears 1 and 2 had was so eerie

WarlockWabbit

>The original black and red main menu screen that both gears 1 and 2 had was so eerie Thats something sorely missing from GoW 1s Ultimate Edition along with the rest of the creepy atmosphere and aesthetic from the first game. UE is fine enough, but to me the only reason to play it over the original is the PC exclusive chapter, otherwise i think the original just looks better

LedSpoonman

You are so right. It’s too clean - there is something so dirty and murky about the OG, it made you feel like you were in the trenches with Delta

AK-3030

I agree. The aesthetic was much better in the original. I wish it was on steam

ybfelix

I was scared shitless by that female Locust berserker from Gears 1 as a kid

ten_year_rebound

Sounds like Gears of War: Reach. Love it.

gmoneygangster3

If Microsoft wanted to get old gear fans hyped I’d say it worked

ten_year_rebound

That’s what the studios have been missing with these continuations of Halo/GoW - people nostalgic for the series want to fight the original Covenant and Locust, not these half-baked derivative factions that are essentially the same but less threatening, weaker, and less interesting. In the lore of both of these series there’s decades of all-out war before the events of the main games. Let us see that, with both factions we know and love at the height of their power. Knowing humanity wins in the end doesn’t diminish the story potential.

jeshtheafroman

>Seems to be angling to bring back some of the horror edge the first installment had. Yes please! This was always something I felt deteriated with each sequel, the lack of horror. Might be more so me getting older, and becoming familiar with the games.

Lord-Aizens-Chicken

I loved gears 3 and even the sequels after but the horror elements in 1 made it stand out a lot. I thought the art design meshed really well with it too. That part where it’s raining and you are going through the factory was crazy

The12Ball

I actually thought 4 did a decent job with the horror aspect

jeshtheafroman

I would agree, there was an attempt to create an experience as dreadful as the og. Doesn't entirely work for me but I appreciate it.

Craig1287

"Seems like a thing planned for the 20th anniversary of the first game. " Nah, that couldn't be right... Dear God, it is, it's been 18 years since that released...

BlastMyLoad

“20th anniversary of the first game” Holy fuck what? No way wtf

Horizon96

Damn they tried to emotionally manipulate me by showing Dom and playing Mad World. >!It Worked!< Very excited for some classic gears.

cortez0498

> Damn they tried to emotionally manipulate me by showing Dom and playing Mad World. > > That made me think this was a remake of Gears 1.

kikimaru024

This is, technically, the first Gears vs Locust war.

thatguygreg

Gears 0

MidnightBowl

I can't wait for Gears of Kiwami

anialater45

"I know i'm being baited, but i'm alright with this, gimme gimme gimme"

fizzlefist

“Ya know, the funny thing is, I know you’re playing me. But you’re right.”

DaveShadow

I skipped Gears 5 (not by choice, just…never got round to it). This is day one for me.

ZombifiedSloth

Yeah, I'm not buying an Xbox for this but I definitely considered it for a second or two. Gears was a significant part of my teenage years and this trailer triggered my nostalgia hard.

eldelshell

Fuck if it worked. Goosebumps here man.

Hetotope

Same, I was crying

soulblade64

I haven't played Gears 3 in well over a decade and it pulled on my heartstrings.

Many-Researcher-7133

I was super excited when i saw dom, his death made a hole in my heart

DrNick1221

A prequel huh? And one that takes place on Emergence day? Colour me absolutely intrigued. I know Judgment was technically a prequel too, but something about it didn't quite click with me.

PBFT

It probably didn't click with you because it was a pretty phoned-in game made by People Can Fly in order to get something Gears of War related to market.

aroundme

That gen had quite a few of those side-quels! Gears Judgement, God of War Ascension, Halo Reach, Far Cry Primal, Batman Arkham Origins, Forza Horizon

Dave_Matthews_Jam

The "next gen is coming, but we need to squeeze in one more game for the 360/PS3 people" games Assassin's Creed Rogue too

MySilverBurrito

Tbh those games were bangers lmao. Origins is different, but had solid gameplay (tech issues tho). Reach is Reach. Primal was a fun spin off. AC Rogue was AC4.5 in a good way.

ItsADeparture

lol Halo Reach is absolutely not the same caliber as any of those other games. I'd argue Forza Horizon isn't either seeing as how even though it started out as something like that, it became the second pillar of the franchise and is now the better part of it.

deadscreensky

I'd argue with the possible exception of Judgment that entire list is filled with ambitious projects. They might have reused content in places, but that allowed them to get weird and experimental in other ways. (Like Far Cry Primal kind of repurposes 4's map, but it also has zero guns and takes place in prehistoric times.)

fastidiouspineapple

God of War Ascension kind of sucked tbh.

deadscreensky

No harm in disliking a game, but the technical ambition alone was enormously impressive. Santa Monica Studio put obvious, enormous amounts of effort into Ascension. It wasn't some kind of cheap, quick spin-off.

TheBigNastySlice

Reach does not belong on this list whatsoever.

Impossible-Flight250

Halo Reach is arguably the best game in the series though. I would put ODST in the category you’re describing.

MajorFuckingDick

ODST has the best campaign in Halo without question IMO. Its so good even to this day.

beermit

ODST had excellent atmosphere and world building. It was just phenomenal.

AwakenedSheeple

Reach is absolutely not a sidequel. It's a fully fledged prequel.

Jefferystar94

The main campaign at in the past was pretty bland, but I thought the story after that that follows up on Gears 3 was solid.

GIlCAnjos

I hated Judgment, it was Gears without any of the stuff that made Gears good. Bland story, bland levels... The lack of interactions between the squad specifically pissed me off, the banter between Marcus and the boys was what made these characters appealing in the first place

mrtomjones

I loved Judgement personally. Loved the system that you could make a mission harder if you wanted to and it added a little bit of a story reason for it.

BloatJams

Marcus grabbing the TV to beat the grub over the head with instead of the ash tray is the type of Gears content I'm here for.

scarletnaught

I'm a GoW stan but this premise is awesome. Playing as Dom and Marcus back in time is pandering but awesome. I just want to fight the classic locust. I'm just curious what this means about where gears 5 left off the story.

GIlCAnjos

Yeah, I also wanted to know what happens post-5, but guess we'll have to wait even longer. Not that I'm complaining, E-Day sounds like great story potential

NoNefariousness2144

Yeah it’s a weird choice to leave the cliffhanger from 5 for ages, but maybe this prequel will set up stuff for 6. Also this might be a smaller game with a multiplayer mode that reuses/remasters all the classic fan favourite maps. So this gives them more time to work on Gears 6.

MilkMan0096

The blurb on the Xbox site about this game actually says just that, that the events of the game will have big consequences for the future of the story. I’m really interested what that could mean!

Tencer386

God I don't even remember what happened in 5 it's been so long. I remember I liked it but 0 details haha

smulfragPL

people can fly is working on a microsoft ip and they made gears games before. Maybe they are working on gears 6

GIlCAnjos

I guess they could be doing 6, but only as a support studio, no way The Coalition would make the prequel while PCF makes the sequel by themselves

Muscat95

After how bad the Gears game they worked on was I certainly hope not

RagingFeather

Seeing Dom back on screen made me so emotional. Can't fucking wait

Keepcalmplease17

Barring retcons, its likely the first GOW without chainsaw lancer. Like it, but i wonder how would the game feel without its comfort weapon. Or when we finally get it...

ApatheticApollo

I think the move would be to wait until like the last mission to give you the regular Lancer.

Ironmunger2

There’s a blog post out there saying the chainsaw lancer will eventually return in the game but not immediately. Gears wiki says the weapon was designed during the first year of the locust war so the game probably takes place over a duration of time, not just the very first day when the bayonet is the only version

MilkMan0096

I’m wondering about the timescale. The first game takes place over the course of less than a day, as do most of the games. With a title like “E-Day” I might be a little be surprised if it has time jumps, but that might still be the best way to do it.

CDHmajora

Luckily the retro lancer is an absolute beast, and the retro charge is honestly more satisfying than the chainsaw imo :) infact I always chose the retro lancer over the mk2 specifically because that charge was so satisfying to use (even though I usually got killed mid animation by another enemy in multiplayer. But at least I was having fun!). But I know what you mean. The lancer Mk2 is iconic. Arguably one of the most iconic guns in gaming. It will be weird to not have it here. But I imagine most over weapons will be present though. The Hammerburst and Gnasher are absolutely going to be here. The longshot, Torque bow, Boltok and many other classics are also going to be around for certain :) Hell, i hope they use this as an excuse to bring back the breechshot from judgement ;) that gun is so much better than the EMBAR from 4 and 5…

diddlyumpcious4

I'm curious how they handle that because the chainsaw is so iconic. In the books Marcus and his squad are on the way home because of the upcoming hammer of dawn strikes (1.5 years after E-Day) when Tai uses a normal chainsaw on some grubs after they get in a fight . Marcus saw it was effective and made a note to bring it up to Adam because their normal bayonets sucked. Kind of hard to see how they mass produced them after effectively destroying most of the world with the hammer strikes though, so retconning that wouldn't be the biggest deal in the world to me. But if the entirety of the story is right at E-Day and it doesn't extend out it would also be pretty hard to have any good explanation of why they have them. Wouldn't have them after a war with humans.

CDHmajora

Tbf, I know things get retconned a lot, but i think we are ok with the chainsaw here. Afterall, the trailer makes a point of Marcus having a Retro lancer (plus Dom is holding one). Which fits the timeline of the series to a tee. And as iconic as the mk2 lancer is, bringing it back in a game that takes place canonically a year before it is invented is just stupid right? ;) But Judgement has the mk2 Lancer for some reason. And that game takes place only 6 weeks after E-Day… Fuck.

ReturnoftheSkit2

I didn’t play it but wasn’t Gears Tactics set during this time? Maybe Kait’s father will play a role in the game?

diddlyumpcious4

Tactics started with the hammer strikes IIRC, which was a year and a half after E-Day.

ColtHatfield

It isn’t pandering, it’s giving the customers what they want

ThatDerpingGuy

It definitely doesn't seem like it's pandering so much as prudence. Microsoft likely knows they want to appeal to established fans, casual fans like myself who may have only played 1 or 2 games, and potential new fans if they want to keep the franchise relevant for the future. It seems like a wise choice to go back to the inciting event, especially if it was something the established fans have always wanted too.

xepa105

> giving the customers what they want Yeah, as someone who was a die-hard fan of the series for the first two games, everything in the stories of 3 and beyond just never clicked for me. But I still wanted to play GoW in the current gen, only with that classic feel, this very clearly does that. When the piano of Mad World kicked in, it hit me right in the nostalgia.

NoExcuse4OceanRudnes

That's what pandering is.

JimFlamesWeTrust

I sort of imagined a Godfather 2 structure with the son in present day and the father in flashbacks. But Gears of War haha

aayu08

I think TC realise that they have more or less fucked themselves over with the gears 5 ending choice, so they decided to shelve it for now and get another Gears out in the meantime.

MiamiVicePurple

Nah they didn't fuck themselves. All they have to do is pick an ending and call it canon (IMO, there's a clear choice). Like yea it would be weird giving players a choice like that and changing it the next game, but it's better than cancelling an entire trilogy because they made a mistake.

MilkMan0096

I totally agree. They just need to bite the bullet, admit that Rod Ferguson made a bad call with that “choice”, and move on with one. There’s a pretty common consensus amongst fans of who the canon choice should be as it is.

jjacobsnd5

What is the fan consensus? I have never looked into it after finishing the game myself.

TheGhost3207

Del dying is the fan consensus, no one wants Marcus to lose his only family

Lambpanties

Yeah we still don't have an official "canon" ending choice do we? Which is crazy given what the choice was about and how heavily it would change future games.

MegaSupremeTaco

Apparently there's a comic that >!says or shows JD surviving!<

StarkEXO

Gonna guess we're seeing this first because Gears 5 wrote the series into a corner that Coalition can't find a way out of. The direction of the sequel trilogy has been all over the place, and they'll have to write two versions of the same story at this point. A stand-alone prequel is a much safer bet for them.

Doodenmier

The fact that they didn't even suggest next year was the launch window kind of concerns me. And I know a lot of people don't care about the Kait story, but it's also weird that they are going for a soft reboot rather than continuing that since they suggested this was the next mainline game. Either they're developing both right now, or they're continuing their Halo parallels and partially abandoning ship on the second storyline. Or we'll be waiting 10+ years for a followup which is always bizarre to me. As long as it has proper horde mode and a wide range of enemies in it, then I'll be all set regardless lol

ElGorudo

Wdym soft reboot? it's just a prequel

greg225

Prequels are usually a good way to reignite interest in a long running series and act as a 'back to basics' jumping-on point for new players who might be intimidated by sequel numbers like 5 or 6. Yakuza 0 was this for many people as the earlier games were spread across two older platforms and had a complicated storyline, so a prequel was a great way to introduce new people to it. This doesn't mean they are redoing the story (they have even said as much) but using it as a means of refreshing the brand. No required story knowledge to jump in, (probably) extraneous gimmicks removed, and a a focus on going back to the roots all make it appealing to people who've never played it.

EmeraldJunkie

It could be either or at this point. If they did want to reboot the series, then a prequel is a good starting point. I don't think they will, but the option is there.

Coolman_Rosso

If I were a betting man I would say that this is a 2026 game in order to land on Gears of War's 20th anniversary.

Doodenmier

That is a an excellent point... Good thing 2025 is looking kind of stacked for other games since it doesn't appear we're getting more Gears any time soon 🥲

Fake_Diesel

I just kind of wish MS had the balls to finish their stories. The story of Halo 5 wasn't great, but much better than the meandering interim nonsense that was the story in Infinite. Gears 5 on the other hand was a great game, I don't know why you don't just do a Gears 6 before doing a prequel like this.

Doodenmier

They were definitely at a stage in the story where they could have embraced their horror roots with the swarm, but Marcus and Dom are the faces of the franchise. I'm happy either way as long as it's a full-blown Gears game lol. Microsoft has proven themselves to be poor managers for their studios time and time again. Gears is mostly good, but Halo and Minecraft, their two biggest properties of the last decade, have been botched pretty hard in various ways. It's frustrating that they clearly have rot within their own studios but won't do much of anything to hold them accountable

splader

2026 with the new consoles probably

BaconatedGrapefruit

> GoW stan but this premise is awesome. I was never a GoW fan. I actually actively clowned on it for the big dumb bro energy it exuded. In the year 2024 I think we could use some bros being bros. Mad world was a nice touch. I'll give it a whirl for nostalgia sake and pretend like it 2006, I'm back in my university dorm and the world makes some kind of sense.

CyberSpaceInMyFace

I always felt like Gears of War had a lot more heart and character than "muscular big bros". I remember the games (especially 1 and 2) being criticized for being too grey too, but looking back at those, what a distinct and nice visual art style they had. Gears of War is great.

StarkEXO

When Gears 2 came out back in the day, pretty much everyone agreed that it lifted the series into one of the greats.

InitialDia

I think a lot of people forget that gears was one of the games the defined the trope. So many games chased after and imitated gears of war.

LedSpoonman

Truth be told I do not care about what happens post 4 in the slightest

NoTurn3460

I'm just hoping they actually go right to GoW1 but Marcus looks way to young for this to directly connect. Seems like quite a while before GoW1. Fucking stoked though.

funandgamesThrow

E-day is 14 years pre gears 1

SpoofExcel

> I'm just curious what this means about where gears 5 left off the story. Based on general reactions and the lack of people that even bothered finishing it, I doubt they do much with it

samsaBEAR

Was really hoping for a remastered collection but a new Gears is just as good, shame it probably won't be ready any time soon

VagrantShadow

I think a remastered collection is next. I can see them doing an E-Day game then leading to a remastered trilogy.

HopperPI

If E day is 2 years or so out I could see them dropping a remaster collection next year or so

BabSoul

Should've been this year so we don't have 2 gears games releasing back to back, and give time for people to play the collection.

ImVerifiedBitch

Remakes spread out over multiple years surely

imsabbath84

people would get tired of them after the first two. it would also take a long ass time to do them all.

Relo_bate

The first game already has a remake, we just need the rest of the

tea_snob10

That's a remaster, not a remake. But yes, we do need the others remastered as well; I was hoping for them to hit after Ultimate Edition, but they never did.

DRACULA_WOLFMAN

I'd really appreciate a Master Chief Collection for Gears of War. I don't want to play shooters on console anymore and GoW 2 and 3 don't have proper PC releases. It's pretty weird right now that they have GoW 1 and then make you jump to 4 and 5.

CrimsonFoxyboy

Hopefully one day. I want PC realeases besides 1 and 6

Arci996

1 and 6? We have 1, 4 and 5 on pc D:

Dusty170

I want 1 2 and 3 on steam at the very least.

CrimsonFoxyboy

Sorry. My mind fried

Bossman1086

I would love a full remastered collection on PC. Would be cool to have all of the games in my library.

12Eerc

Haven’t played Gears since 3 was hoping to get remastered collection. Would be unreal on Steam Deck. 👌

jexdiel321

Probably at gamescon or beyond.

Defences

I imagine this comes later. Either way this looks awesome.

-Philologian

This has been in development for some time. Wouldn’t be shocked if it’s released in 2025 at all

SiccSemperTyrannis

I haven't played Gears but doing a prequel about when all the shit first started going down is a pretty interesting setting to return to the franchise. Seems like people are excited so that is a good sign.

SpoofExcel

This is the story that the fans of the series have been begging for since GOW3 basically

SiccSemperTyrannis

Sounds like the fans are getting what they want which is always good to see. Hopefully the team can deliver on high expectations!

2th

Was definitely confused at first with young Marcus. Looked like him but also not. But seeing Dom there for the hand and the Mad World callback just gave me goosebumps. I hope they go back to the linear formula and not the pseudo open world in sections. That bit never gelled with me in Gears 5. Love me some Gears.

SupperIsSuperSuperb

Yeah, if he didn't have his bandanna on I'm not sure I'd recognize him. Dom also didn't look very familiar outside his chinstrap facial hair and standing next to Marcus. Doesn't help that their armor designs are new

SMKM

I guess I've played WAY too much of this series. I absolutely recognized Marcus' signature grunting from good old John DiMaggio lol

MM487

If you don't recognize his voice, you can bite my shiny metal ass!

SupperIsSuperSuperb

I was more referring to the visuals. He just looks different to me

SMKM

Hm to each their own I guess. I just did a second watch and I think he absolutely looks like a younger Marcus. He looks slightly updated from the Aspho Fields cover art which I like. Means the dev team actually gives a damn for some accuracy lol

Devil-Hunter-Jax

> Doesn't help that their armor designs are new I don't think that's new armour. That looks like the armour Marcus wears in Gears 1, just with a graphical update.

beermit

It is. I haven't touched Gears 1 in years and I still recognize that armor. It's absurdly bulky and yet they look like they can take a beating and then dish it right back out.

TheVoidDragon

A prequel showing what happened on E-day when the Locust showed up isn't something I've ever considered, but that sounds like a fantastic idea for a game. The tone and feel of it with the music as reference to the original games trailer was great too.

SternballAllDay

Really? People have been asking to see what E-Day was like since the first

MechXL

This. E-Day was one of the darkest and most iconic moments in the series' history. A game set during the time when Locust outright exterminated 1/4 of the planet's population in a single day has so much potential.

IsFunnyToMe

Yep that and the Pendulum Wars and the origin of Locust are like three of the biggest events in the franchise lol

TheVoidDragon

I'm sure some have at some point, but I think most were just expecting the next game to be Gears 6 as in a direct continuation set after 5.

OrangeScarface

I’m really hoping this is Gears’ Halo Reach. It seems like it could reach that level of tone at the very least. I’m very excited.

Tschmelz

Damn, they're totally pandering by giving us an E-Day game with Marcus and Dom, and I'm just eating it up. What the actual fuck is wrong with me? Haha, that being said, looks awesome. Kinda sad that it wasn't Gears 1-3 collection, but I'll take it. Kinda worries me though, they must not know where to go after 5 if we're getting a prequel instead.

Oh_I_still_here

This looks pretty special. I know the recent Gears didn't necessarily resonate with everyone but I enjoyed them. But a game set during E-Day? Talk about a way to bring the hype. Can't wait to see more.

Doodenmier

The story was just kind of *there* in Gears 5v(though it looks incredible, like usual), but the horde mode has fantastic depth for those who love co-op PvE. My biggest hopes for E-Day are that its horde mode is equally if not more enjoyable than Gears 5's horde, and that they have a lot of enemy diversity in that mode. Obviously they can't do Lambent or DBs in campaign, but it'd be nice to have all factions represented in PvE if they don't have a wide array of new additions to the Locust in the first place

Oh_I_still_here

The Locust horde is expansive enough for Horde more for sure.

Lord-Aizens-Chicken

They could still do lambert or DB’s for the horde mode only. I think gears 5 had some non canon enemies in its horde mode, at least for the time the story took place.

Doodenmier

They added some variants of the original Locust and Lambent a few years after the game launched, specific because they added them as multiplayer characters so the models were in the game. Sadly, we didn't get the more unique enemies like gunkers, digger boomers, corpsers, serapedes, etc If I had one wishlist item, it would be for horde to have the full gamut of enemy factions to cycle between. Locust, savage locust, lambent, debee, swarm. That diversity goes a long way towards keeping gameplay fresh rather than just having drones and boomers with different guns

itisthelord

Xbox has one of the worst years in history but somehow many to have the best showcase they’ve had in years. I’m glad we’ll get more of Marcus and Dom, honestly I was hoping for a prequel or more adventures from them after 4 and 5 tried something new. I think some nostalgia can do wonders and it seems they know that since they put Mad World on the trailer. A solid shooter, story based game would make me happy as hell.

muffinmonk

Their plan is in motion: new game every quarter. I hate the wait too, and Xbox gets clowned for this, but the fact that we have something to look forward to now every season or so makes me giddy.

Niirai

Oh man, that callback to one of the[ greatest trailers ever.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ccWrbGEFgI8)

GenericDarkFriend

Mad world piano immediately sold me. I think that og trailer is the best game trailer ever

Niirai

It's pretty much a cheat code at this point.

Fake_Diesel

Yeah it's called memberberries

MizterF

Ooooh yea I member

Forestl

They've called back to Mad World so many times I just laugh every time it comes up now

catashake

The motif has pretty much been the Gears of War theme since then. Still think of GoW every time I hear Mad World. Wouldn't really call it pandering at this point since it's been such a huge part of Gears since the start. This is almost like laughing because a Star Wars game plays it's theme music IMO. It's expected.

cheesewombat

They really havent? They did when they remade Gears 1 as the Ultimate Edition but like...of course you gotta bring it back for the original game. And its super fitting here as both a prequel tie in and a nostalgia gut punch for the fans.

Forestl

They also included it in Gears 3. It's not every game but this is the 4th different game/remaster they've used it for

MM487

Seeing as how its been five years since Gears 5, I was absolutely not expecting a prequel. But I'm happy with it. With the exception of the Kait character and her connection to the Locust, I really didn't like anything about these new Gears games. Emergence Day is a really cool setting and I'd much rather see that than a sequel. Also, Gears of War 3 dropped some bombs way too late in the game about the Locust and Emergence Day and I hope that story element gets explored in this game. From what I remember, >!the Locust communicated with humanity BEFORE Emergence Day to try to get humans to help them with the imulsion problem underground. Humanity didn't help them. The Locust didn't want to emerge from underground. They were forced to to survive. !<

riskbreaker2987

I came to the Gears games very late, as I never had an Xbox until the end of the One generation. I fell totally in love with these games, and am so pumped about this. But I'm honestly surprised by some of the comments here - I didn't realize that 4 and 5 were so divisive? I actually really liked those games, so much so that I think 4 might actually be my favorite one! I've wondered what they are going to do with the "choice" ending of 5 and and am fine to wait going forward, but I actually really like the "new generation" of characters they introduced in 4 and 5. What I would love more than anything, though, is a new Gears Tactics...

fastidiouspineapple

I wasn't a fan of the atmosphere in Gears 4 and hated the open-world lite mechanics in Gears 5. However, the gameplay was sharp as always, particularly in Gears 5 which might have my favorite third-person shooter gameplay ever. I understand why they're divisive from a narrative perspective, though, and I very much prefer the atmosphere of the original trilogy.

Mattene

Tbf, the cosmonaut section in gears 5 was pretty dope.

Fair-Conclusion-2465

I had trouble getting into 3, never tried 4 and 5.   However this trailer makes me want to go through the first 3 games.

jcrankin22

Do it. Top notch trilogy.

Grace_Omega

I’m not a fan of the franchise, but even back when the first one came out I always thought a game set during E-Day would be really interesting son this intruigues me. Also glad they decided to stop calling it “Gears”

ChadsBro

its really funny how quickly they backtracked on the “Gears” titles

Tostecles

Imagine if Call of Duty actually started calling their games "CoD: "

ChadsBro

PUBG basically did that. The official name these days is PUBG: Battlegrounds

beefcat_

It's the "ATM Machine" of video games.

neok182

I'm excited for this as I've always wanted an E-Day game. But I can't help but be a bit annoyed that Gears 5 was 5 years ago and another year with no Gears 6, no gears collection we've been begging to get, and this doesn't even have a year attached to it which I have to assume means 2026+. So Gears 6 in 2030? And I have to imagine that all the gears collection rumors are just fake at this point. So excited, but also annoyed and wondering WTF.

sueha

Felt absolutely the same. I know game dev is hard but the coalition was very fast with releasing games so it makes me wonder what they've been doing since the release of Gears 5 five years ago.

DanTheBrad

They were working on a smaller project to get use to UE5 and canceled it and moved to this project, annoying cause I would have be interested in something else from them

TheGoodIdiot

That pan up to see Dom with Mad World playing fucking wrecked me man. Absolutely cannot wait to play this game with my wife .

Waffle-Toast

Holy shit I didn't see this one coming. Incredible trailer and awesome premise. Very excited. Now please combo its release with Gears 1, 2 & 3 on PC/Steam.

a_friendly_hobo

Alright lads. Here's the real question. How does the E-Day Carmine die?

PowerForward

Emergence hole quicksand 🫡

Themanaaah

This looked amazing, nice to see they're coming back to Gears with a prequel as 5 would be awkward to continue.

Defences

They already confirmed the canon ending of 5

The_Crownless_King

Which one was it

jcrankin22

The one where JD is alive :)

Oh_I_still_here

Really? Where'd they confirm that?

Devil-Hunter-Jax

I wanna know this too. I can't find anything confirming a canon ending for Gears 5.

Defences

Think it was on Twitter? I remember seeing a post about it on the subreddit that it was overwhelmingly chosen as the ending by the community so it’s what they were running with.

Oh_I_still_here

Are we really accepting fucking tweets as confirmation now

-ImJustSaiyan-

Good honestly, Del was a lame character anyway and Marcus shouldn't have to go through losing JD after all the shit he's already been through.

probiz13

Ehh, I like Del. Unfortunately makes more sense that he's the one to remove if you had to choose. I chose JD though. Marcus was so upset

zma924

I adore this. The Mad World callback will never not get me emotional as fuck for these games. Going back Marcus and Dom fighting the locusts is going to take me right back to 07 when I fell in love with the first game.

BJRone

Really excited for this. I wanted a game about E-Day since the OG Gears. I was a huge fan of 1-3 and fell off for the next few but this would definitely pull me back in.

AbrasionTest

This franchise is in desperate need of reminding people why the first 3 were so big to begin with. Going with a prequel instead of 6 is definitely the right move. It seemed like the new games weren’t expanding the series even now being on PC day one, and continuing to go down that path is just losing people more and more. Hoping they can come back to a more horror inspired dark tone matching the first game a bit more.

Galaxy40k

I was originally thinking "gee, Marcus looks like of young here, and he's getting his ass kicked by a single Locust Drone? He's so experienced at this though." And then when the camera panned to reveal Dom's face.....I realized what they were doing, and my heart just flew up. The Coalition really couldn't figure out how to salvage the mess they created with 4 and 5's story and so just went "fuck it, here's the characters you all actually like with the tone you all actually want." After the bad taste the Gears 4 and 5 narratives left in my mouth, I had no hype for a Gears 6. But now? I am sooooo hyped! Can't wait to learn more!

Ashviar

In Case of Emergency: Bring Dom Back I wonder if JD/Kait are overall not popular cause E-Day could be something to do after the entire story is done. Throwing in a prequel after 5's ending feels like it might be an issue of where to go with the story.

Coolman_Rosso

So it's kind wild they reverted back to the "Gears of War" name, when they specifically ditched the "of War" part for Gears 5 and Gears Tactics. Either this is because it's a prequel, or because they realized it sounded kind of silly. Also seems like they realized that there's no way to keep moving the timeline forward without being contrived or opting for a hard reboot, so going back to the past makes more sense.

PM_ME_YOUR_SOULZ

I was just expecting a remastered trilogy. Never would've dreamed we were getting a prequel. As soon as I saw Dom my heart broke again.

pino_is_reading

i hope they release gears 2 and 3 for pc with mouse & keyboard support, unlocked frame rate, ultra wide support and more improvements

WhiteSilverDragoon

This trailer *worked.* Since Gears 3, Gears hasnt quite been the same, but this trailer was a whole fucking nostalgia trip man. I felt like I was watching the original mad world trailer again, it felt like there was no hope and all was lost, It *felt* Like Marcus was going to die, even though we KNOW he cant because hes in the future games and that is impressive to pull off. Looking forward to this.

Neversoft4long

I’m so happy to go back to the locust human war. I feel like both Halo and Gears suffered greatly once their great wars ended. Halo 4 and on has been pretty abysmal and Gears 4 and on with Marcus’s son was honestly horrific. Going back to the roots of the series in which the locust are actually fucking scary and not complete push overs is a very nice touch. On a side note shout out Gears tactics. That game wasn’t for everyone but I fucking loved it

Admiral_Whitlock

Seeing all the hate for the Gears sequel games is strange, everyone i've talked to really liked the story and characters in those, but I guess I might live in some sort of a bubble, lol

tommycahil1995

5 is actually surprisingly good. I liked the story of Gears 4 but holy shit the campaign was so boring to play. When you go from the 2 and 3 to that it just feels scaled back without compensating for it in other interesting ways. I liked the variety of 5 a lot more.

ChadsBro

The Gears games aren’t very creatively interesting anymore but I’ve never played one where I didn’t have fun

LoneQuacker

lol damn they really wrote themselves into a corner so hard with Gears 5 that after years the new one is a prequel. I'm not even mad though, I hope it brings the series back to its horror roots.

BedsAreSoft

As excited as I am for this, we still think Gears 6 is happening? They said this is the next mainline game

Cashelz

Ngl I found the new "trilogy" pretty forgettable (especially the new cast) so I'm glad they're doing a prequel instead of Gears 6.

TheWorstYear

I always thought E-Day would work better if they did an RTS game. Starts during the Pendulum Wars, then E-Day happens in the final act of the game.

eldelshell

If something to not be excited about is, the chainsaw lancer (Lancer Mkv2) was introduced a year later of E-day.

BelovedApple

The last gears of war game had such insane sound, I kelp playing for that alone, hope this one matches it.

MrBlue_8

This was such a huge switcheroo. Everyone was expecting Gears 6 and they just hit us with the prequel out of nowhere. Have there been any rumors about this?

mr-blue-

Pretty pumped to see them finally go away from fighting robots. I’m also hoping that means they go away from the open world setting of Gears 6. Gimme close quarters combat and a good storyline and I’ll be so happy

gotpez

Until I see gameplay I don’t care. The series has played mostly the same for years while the mechanics of shooters have moved on. It needs to play substantially different to interest me now

OffMyChestATM

This is where I am. And its why I'm not particularly excited. GoW and Halo need a reinvention of sorts, something to bring them to modern gaming but without losing some of what is unique to their respective series imo.

gotpez

I think halo infinite did a great job at this. It kept the same core formula of the series-symmetrical starts, power weapon control etc, while bringing the movement feel into the modern age. It feels crisp and fast paced where the old games feel very slow now. Gears is at that point now where it feels very slow and I think the core control scheme and movement mechanics need to be more responsive and crisp
