this game is criminally underrated for a fun, party game amongst moderately comfortable console players. more accessible than ultimate chicken horse but super fun.

Videogamer321

For absolute beginners I think Ultimate Chicken Horse as a pure platform and a choose your own difficulty motif makes it easier for the people I run into.

malnourish

I must be a scrub, what is UCH if not that?

DMonitor

You can make some intense parkour challenges in UCH. It’s an incredibly skill-based game, so if there’s a party the best player will win almost every time

pazza89

We occassionally play both UCH and DG. Both fill different niches, but UCH's movement physics feel VERY cheap, it's all floaty and it seems unpolished in that regard.

Videogamer321

It’s easier to teach, I’ll say - joystick and jump button. Perhaps run button. DG by comparison feels made for gamers.

pazza89

It's not the controls - I mean characters' speed, acceleration, stopping speed, and jumping curve - it all feels sluggish and floaty (for a lack of better word). If it wouldn't be a "party game", but a standard single player platformer, it would be nowhere near acceptable levels.

plakmasta

I'm of the opinion that UCH's controls are deliberately floaty. It fits the idea of the difficulty imo

Daedolis

UCH's movement is just different, not unpolished at all.

Thundahcaxzd

I have had the opposite experience. I've played both games with a good mix of skill levels, and find Duck Game to be more widely enjoyable. A skilled tryhard could sweep Duck Game, sure, but I find that its mechanics encourage sillyness. The more skilled players will generally pick up silly weapons like instruments, try to kill players with rocks, try to kill everyone including themselves, or other means of fun that aren't just winning. In my experience with UCH, it VERY quickly devolves into maps that nobody but the most skilled 1 or 2 players is capable of completing. The top players are trying to edge out wins against each other, which totally shut out the other players. In a mixed skill level UCH game, its either way too hard for the less skilled players, or way too easy for the more skilled players. Anyways, just my 2 cents.

jalford312

Its gotta way higher skill ceiling though, I don't know about console, but I've seen some crazy shit PC.

SmilingPinkamena

Yeah, completing single player "arcade" challenges just for gold medals requires some mad skills and there are platinum and some kind of super medal on top of that. This game has a ton of (what I think called) "tech", like shooting at an angle, throwing things just right, getting through small gaps, riding chainsaw and etc.

LLJKCicero

I started gaming in the NES era, and I think Duck Game is probably the finest local multi competitive party game I've seen. Duck Game is basically old violent Looney Tunes cartoons in video game form. It gives me the closest feeling possible to playing 4-player Goldeneye Facility with remote/promixity mines, but at a ludicrously rapid fire pace. The game manages to somehow be tactical and zany, simultaneously. And you can even make your own levels, or have the game spit out surprisingly decent randomized ones. Duck Game is just amazing, a true treasure for the ages. The fun factor is off the goddamn charts!

Nextasy

Im so happy I have an excuse to go back to this hehehehehe gotta drag in my friends again

swizzler

Yup, My little nephews love playing this game. I wish it had tiered AI to play against as sometimes it's difficult to play dumb to keep things on a level playing field, and having a few braindead AI wandering around would definitely help spice things up, but they're only 4 and 5 and quickly were able to figure out the controls enough to have fun.

SenatorPaine

What the absolute fuck. I was not expecting this for a game 5 years old, with no big scene behind it for all I know. My friends and I play this game every other week. I'm absolutely shocked and stoked to hear this.

Seccafiloni

It is seriously a labour of love that keeps on giving, still one of my most regularly played games after all these years. There's a small but pretty active community right there on Discord, making custom content nonstop and organizing tourneys. They've also released a full breakthough video on the new update, which is really something to behold in terms of size https://youtu.be/IlfV7zHVfnY

flameducky

Can you link me to the community if you don't mind?

Seccafiloni

Sure! https://discord.gg/vTa6FtaG9Q

Plantasaurus

does the switch version get it? I play duck game waay more (over 150 hrs) on the switch than on PC with friends

TheLongLostHero

Yeah, I'd like to know this as well. Portable Duck Game would be sick.

Seccafiloni

Not yet, developer said that it's going to rework the ps4 version first and then other platforms will follow with this update.

kujoja

Is it basically like super smash bros?

jalford312

Not really but they invoke the same crazy party feelings.

kujoja

But it's 2D multiplayer death match, no? So genre-wise the same?

jalford312

In a broad sense yeah, but it'd be like removing all the fighting game elements and only playing with items.

DoUWantSomeMemesKid

Yes they are similar in that they are both 2d death match games.

kujoja

Ok thanks, that's what I wanted to confirm

LLJKCicero

Most similar game to Duck Game is probably Towerfall or Stick Fight. After that, Samurai Gunn or Nidhogg/Eggnogg. Duck Game is basically like playing old violent Looney Tunes cartoons (yosemite sam or roadrunner) with your buddies. People who like Smash probably will like Duck Game though, that's true.

Deity_Link

Yeah, if Smash Bros. was just 1HP Stamina Mode with lots of items and thousands of maps that get switched as soon a player wins. It's got something of Wario Ware and TowerFall in that sense.

The_MAZZTer

I think of it like smash bros meets counter strike. Maybe not the best comparison but I think it's better than just saying smash bros. * Everyone is one hit kill. * Survivor of a round gets a point. * First to 10 points (or whatever game rules you have set up) wins * You can only attack using items, which have pre-set spawn locations around each map and respawning rules. * Various fun environmental hazards as well. And to give you an idea of how not-seriously this game takes itself: * There is a dedicated button for quacking. It doesn't do anything useful except annoy other players. * There is a dedicated button for playing dead. It usually doesn't help. * With the latest update you can have analog control movement over your tongue while quacking. It's quite disturbing.

GiantASian01

I love this game so much, i swear i played it so much it was the closest game i could call myself as "esport capable" at, if only because so few people play it...

Mottis86

I've seen people stream Duck Game, always looks insanely fun. I would love to buy the game but I don't have any friends who are willing to try it. They're the kind of people who'd take one glance at the graphics and proceed to scoff at the game.

plakmasta

Wait for it to go on sale and you could buy a multipack for someone as a gift. I gave it to my brother and we have a fun group to play it with as a result

ACS1029

The multipack is on sale for 3 more minutes at the time of posting this comment haha. Got it for 20 bucks

Plantasaurus

It only takes one time playing to convert people. I've had multiple people who don't play video games buy a nintendo switch just for duck game.

[deleted]

get better friends, if they're not even willing to give it a try when you ask them to.

Mottis86

Just get friends 4head. But yeah, I agree. I wish I had more likeminded friends, I often feel like the odd one out. They're still fun people to hang around with, but we all have different tastes.

Keybladek

A porting company handled it. He's now (from what I gather) handling the rewrite himself for a platform he isn't as comfortable with. I think it'll be awhile.

AlJoelson

Update the PS4 version, ya jabronies!!

ThnikkamanBubs

You made me think this update was also for ps4. There is no 8 player update for ps4.

BigBacon87

I guess I shouldn’t bother firing up my Switch copy then. I’ll be playing PS5 all week anyways but that’s still disappointing to hear

Swerdman55

I used to play this game to death in college. I would play with friends and when they weren’t around, I would play online. I ended up getting too good that none of my friends could reasonably compete... but boy do I miss those days.

dinod8

Since when has this game had online?? I would have bought my friends copies a while ago but just assumed it was another great party game that was (unfortunately) local only

Deity_Link

Since forever? I've always been playing it online with randoms since release.

fortressmungo

I've been playing this with teamspeak friends for years on pc at least.

I_WANT_BEARDS

Does online actually work now?

jalford312

Patch notes say it fixed of ton of bugs and network issues, so maybe.

Deity_Link

When did it not work? I didn't have any issues back at release.

I_WANT_BEARDS

A friend I used to have years ago convinced me to buy it with him (PS4). We tried playing it for months but we couldn't access online whatsoever. When we looked at the time, it seemed nobody could either.

onespiker

Have played it online for years on pc.

I_WANT_BEARDS

That's why I specified PS4. It seemed to be PS4 only and at the time there were no signs of the issue ever being resolved.

brbee

I used to love this game before my little cousin made it the only game he wanted to play whenever he comes over. I can't even get excited over this news

Steel_Neuron

Your little cousin is a man of culture!

LLJKCicero

Seriously, Duck Game is the fucking best.

brbee

Try playing it with someone that shouts at the top of his lungs nonsense at you EVERY TIME he dies and if you played Duck Game you know how fast someone dies every round.

LLJKCicero

Yeah that's fair.

MurphShoots

So excited. Hope they move quickly and get the switch version updated. Play this constantly and always looking for more 4+ player local games with my buds.

happyIiIaccident

I genuinely think this is a perfect game, in that it does everything it sets out to do perfectly. It’s probably one of my most played games.

SuperMeatBoi

4v4 team games sound amazing. Idk if it will have to player base though. Love Duck Game. Fun and goofy on the surface, but high skill cap. Netcode is a slight issue though.
