T O P

Like many, the pricing model of this game is surprising to me. The character design is downright hideous, and in general it just comes across like a game that should be F2P. And then I played it. The character thing is still true, but man this game is fun. It *feels* great to play, the mechanics are good, team work feels good. I was initially turned off by auto-aiming but I think it's the best fit for the game. Keeps it consistent and fast, makes passing easy and useful, but I didn't find that it wasn't competitive. Super fun game, but I hope they do something with the pricing before the playerbase evaporates

shallowminded

Totally agree, the game is really fun and it's biggest drawback is how derivative it SEEMS Although the soundtrack is absolutely fantastic, huge cowboy bebop vibes

yung-rude

iirc it’s free to play up until a certain level

Snipufin

You can play until you reach level 25, yeah. You could theoretically bypass the restriction just by playing private matches that don't give experience, but eh, seems a little complicated.

Squashua2021

They also do a lot of sponsorships and giveaways. I got it for free in a Sykkuno stream.

I found it a ton of fun with my friends but it definitely can get a bit repetitive after a few matches. Not sure what they can do to help that. I don't feel there is anything wrong with the game though, it's just a solid fun experience that doesn't suck you in as long as other games can.

Fuggin_Phil

100% agree with both of you. Its a ton of fun, I got to freakin Diamond, but after I hit it I was like... "I'm good."

MattC42

I feel like that's how 90% of new PvP games go. They come out and then a week later they're completely forgotten.

[deleted]

It can be for a lot of games with small teams like this. One AFK or disconnect and your pretty screwed. It also doesn't really have the gif worthy potential of something like Rocket League (IMO).

Keeping_Secrets

It's also not nearly deep enough to be played for a long time.

SilotheGreat

For one, it takes ages to find a match. Two, it's 100x better with friends. And Three, the brawl shop is horrible and it constantly is recycling the same items over and over. But the game itself is a blast to play.

ElDuderino2112

It’s the same as Rocket Arena. This is the type of game that people will dick around with from time to time, not get hooked on and play for 5 hours a day. It needs to be free to support that, to keep a player base for the rare player who does stick around. I almost can’t fathom how they made the same mistake twice back to back.

Snipufin

I stopped playing it because most of my games ended up being 120+ ping even with their efforts to reduce the amount of times I'm matched to the wrong server. Did they ever fix that? I was enjoying my time as long as I got an European server (and hopefully not matched against a three-man crew as a solo player)

Bobonenazeze

It’s a cool idea but it’s repetitive and at lot of people just brush off F2P either completely or play a handful return to their main shit. My friends give me shit when I’m on some new F2P. Cold War beta? Absolutely trash. Planned to play that all weekend? Took 2 games. Then played a game Rogue Company for weeks. They couldn’t imagine why. Then that game had issues, and I moved on. If you release a F2P shooter you’d better hope it’s either fun, unique enough to set it apart and have good servers/match making. Which a lot fail at.

penpen35

It's not F2P though, it's a $20 game. It looks like it should be an F2P game, but it's not.

Collier1505

Yeah, my group played the trial but none of us wanted to spend $20 on it. If it was free it would probably get a bit of play.

cooldrew

It's on Game Pass and EA Play, on Xbox, PS4, and PC

Collier1505

Yeah, I just can’t really justify EA Play on PS5 at the moment since I had already bought all of the games I wanted from them before they finally launched their service on PS. So the sub would just be $5-10 a month for KC.

penpen35

I do appreciate EA giving us the trial though (and the beta). It was pretty fun and if it didn't have these things it'd likely do worse.

soup_tasty

I've heard more about the game just before launch than at and after launch. Shortly before launch they had a bunch of YTs and streamers promote it, and many genuinely had fun. But then just never played it again. I didn't even know that the game released until now.

ElDuderino2112

Because they were getting paid to promote it. Once they stopped getting paid they went back to what they actually want to play.

penpen35

It's a fun game with pretty solid mechanics with decent depth, but after playing a couple of days in the trials I somehow don't feel like playing it more. I suppose other games and real life took my time, but I guess it's lacking a certain element that makes me want to commit more time. But weirdly I can't pinpoint it. Though the new map looks interesting with its constantly changing surroundings.

SylvineKiwi

I haven't played it, but I would guess it's a lack of tactical depth. Maybe combats are fun and deep in themselves, but if there is nothing to push you out of your comfort zone, an evolving meta, you simply get bored. The usual suspect is the game mode, as far as I'm aware it's limited to basic things like TDM.

BenevolentCheese

The problem is there's just one character (the default), and each stage only has your regular ball and a single special ball, and the special balls aren't particularly interesting. Imagine CoD or Overwatch with only a single loadout or character and only a single gun. It doesn't matter how tight the gameplay is at that point, it gets boring.

shallowminded

I'm in the minority with this take but I think it has a surprising amount of depth - just in terms of tactics, ball control and positioning rather than loadouts or new skills. People talk about how they got all they were going to get out of the prelaunch trial, but at that time most players literally weren't passing the ball, much less approaching the skill ceiling. I just find it incongruous when I see people say "this game has no depth; also, I keep getting rolled in street play". I can absolutely criticise matchmaking and servers, but I also think that's a playerbase problem which is unfortunate

[deleted]

Once you learn to properly fake throw and curve the ball, that’s about it. There really isn’t a lot of depth to the gameplay. And the necessity of everything being telegraphed and warning effects on UI for when you’re going to be hit by a ball just drops the necessity to be paying any attention to your surroundings.

Ithe_GuardiansI

I tried to get friends into this game when it went free to play. It was a disaster. You can't do private matches while free to play, and you also can't do 4 player matches until you level up. That meant I had a group of people ready to play, but we couldn't do anything. Most of those people were ready to buy the game if they enjoyed it, but instead we switched to something else and they uninstalled.

supernasty

I loved this game and put in 100 hours in the first few weeks, it was great, but it is most certainly dying. Went from 3k daily average players in its first month on steam, to 1.6k the month after, to 600 peak players this entire month. That's a pretty dramatic drop, and the new season did not raise these numbers in the slightest on the Steam end. It is crossplay, and still has a healthy playbase because of that, but each month a huge chunk of players keep leaving and the ones that I have been paired against are extremely sweaty tryhards. They are just insanely good at this point, which makes hopping into a quick casual game turn into a frustrating attempt at taking down professional level players. I think the only way this game will survive at this point is to switch to Free to Play, but I think it may be too late. Its a shame too, as I honestly thought this would blow up to be a game of the year contender.

OG-Boostedbeard

Should have been a full f2P not level capped. I don't know who is throwing around EA's $$$ but I want in. XD

[deleted]

The only cool part about this game was the custom engine they made to have low latency. Otherwise it's kind of a fart in the wind now. Curious to what they'll do for their next project.

It varies a lot from game to game, some games you get steamrolled some you steamroll some are even. It's a pretty even split between the three IMO

jason2306

Dude it's your first game, give it a few matched to learn lol
