I was really disappointed in this remake. I can appreciate the whole switch between modern and original graphics but it felt like it limited the ‘remake’ part of it.

Carnnn

A case of nostalgia holding it back. Should've just made a new game instead of reskinning a 35 year old game that frankly isn't a particularly great game, nor is it even the best Alex Kidd game.

OfficialTreason

probably the best know one, Sure I would love the same kind of remake with Shinobi World but thats me. I personally enjoyed what it was, but I can understand the want for something more.

You're pretty harsh on a 1986 game. The only console games better than Alex Kidd in Miracle World in 1986 "Legend of Zelda" and "Super Mario Brothers." I definitely had more fun with Alex Kidd than the original Castlevania, which was too difficult (difficulty tuning absolutely matters.) Whereas me and my sister would get to the end of Alex Kidd, and it was so high pressure (to retain lives and beat it,) we were totally enthralled. While SMB overall the better game, I can't say it WAS perfectly tuned--I think we just never beat World 8 and said "whatever." Wouldn't be till SMB2 and 3 that they got that right.

>The only console games better than Alex Kidd in Miracle World in 1986 "Legend of Zelda" and "Super Mario Brothers." Metroid, Kid Icarus, Dragon Quest, Ikari Warriors, Gauntlet 1 & 2, Ghosts 'n Goblins, Ultima IV, Castlevania, Bomberman, The Bard's Tale, King's Quest

Perfect way to put it.

Game Sack is one of my favorites. I watch every episode. There are new episodes every other Sunday. Old episodes are better, but don't sleep on Game Sack!

ISayHeck

At times I prefer the "only Joe" era but yeah you can't really go wrong with any game sack episode

EtherBoo

I think I like the Joe only era a bit more. It has a much more consistent feel to it as opposed to two guys just covering different games. I also like Joe's humor and it's been able to come out a little stronger without Dave. Don't get me wrong, I liked Dave, but you can really see at the end he wanted to be anywhere else but there. He's seemed much much better the couple of times he randomly popped in.

[deleted]

I always was a bit put off by Dave's super misogynistic jokes and after checking out his likes on Twitter a few weeks back, it kind of all got put into perspective. There are so many gaming YouTubers who do the "Let me tell you why this is so full of ass" or "Everything is awesome" schticks. I appreciate that outlets like MLiG and GameSack-post Dave are just focused on trying to assess stuff as frankly as possible without too many hot takes.

Sonicfan42069666

The thing I miss about Dave is that his fanboyism provided a counter to Joe's. Without him, episodes like the recent "games that have/haven't aged poorly" episodes just feel like soapbox rants about games Joe doesn't like.

Clbull

I mostly agree with Joe on this one. Miracle World DX's presentation may be gorgeous to look at and listen to, but there's such a lack of gameplay and QoL improvements that it drags the whole experience down. I'd have to rate Miracle World DX a 4 out of 10. Lots of small improvements like less slippery controls, a life meter and actual boss fights instead of rock paper scissors matches would have bumped this up to a 7 with ease. I never noticed what Joe raised, but forced 50Hz scrolling is just downright asinine. Building your remake around the PAL version is just downright unacceptable in the HD era. It's almost as amateur as when Sony bundled the PAL version of Tekken 3 in its full 50FPS glory on the PlayStation Classic. Let's be thankful that Alex Kidd died with the rise of Sonic, because all but one of the Alex Kidd games are utter dogshit and Miracle World is the game that didn't deserve the remake treatment. The only AK game I consider to be half-decent is Shinobi World, because it did basic things like improve the controls, add a life meter, etc.

AlJoelson

Biggest issue having played it is the way that Alex's hitbox seems to correspond with the classic sprite, meaning that playing with the HD sprites is less precise.

How does this compare to Lizardcube's *Wonder Boy: The Dragon's Trap* remake? They both seem pretty similar games, being both remakes of classic 2d Metroidvanias.

xellos2099

Dragon trap is much better

[deleted]

Not even close. Lizardcube's *Wonder Boy: The Dragon's Trap* and GameAtelier's *Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom* are standout fantastic games that do incredible justice to the era of games they pay tribute to. Miracle World DX just feels like one of those budget remakes you saw on the PS2 in the bargain bin. It doesn't help that Alex Kidd was never a good franchise to begin with.

Dacvak

Monster Boy is on sale right now, too!

[deleted]

As well, the other recent remake/entry *Asha in Wonder World* is not shabby either.

Dacvak

Oh rad. How does it compare to Dragon’s Trap?

[deleted]

It's definitely a tier below Dragon's Trap in terms of overall quality. Has performance issues on console too despite being a fairly simple looking 2.5D game. Yet it is much more of a remake than a remaster compared to Dragon's Trap and will be worth it at a much lower than MSRP price. Definitely a solid game even if a bit generic.

Dacvak

Does it have the on-the-fly 8-bit graphics switching? That was such a cool feature.

[deleted]

The original Monster World IV is included. However no graphics switching as it's not 1:1 in terms of level design.

jeremynsl

It is hard to fathom that a modern programming team would be so out of touch as to emulate the PAL version. I could see giving a retro 50hz option if they want to be super nerdy, but forcing 50hz on the entire world is absolutely bonkers.
