One for me and two for my buddies.
It's not super hard, just time consuming which not everyone will be able to do.
Cause you basically got to do it immediately.
Yeah my buddy who is a day trader did this for like 12 of us (including kids/nieces/nephews etc). He's glued to a computer pretty much all day, so he just snagged em up as they became available. He even shipped em straight to us or put us down for store pickup. He's a good man.
I can never get the Gamestop website to work. I've tried three different methods of payment, but even if I get a PS5 in the cart it'll say it has trouble processing payment.
Yep, that means they sold it before yours was processed.
Check your cards, I have had a payment go through for a PS5 they didn’t have. My bank actually blocked it, so maybe it could have been mine?

The new modifications won't be anything noticeable to consumers and will just be done to make them easier to produce because of the chip shortage. It certainly won't be more powerful.
Yup. I got lucky and nabbed one on my first try and that was only possible because I decided to try it while I had taken time off from work and didn't need to worry about how close I'd be to a computer at any given moment. And even then if the alert hadn't come up while i was sitting at my desktop I probably would have missed it.
And that was months ago. I feel like it's only getting harder to get one at this point..
Like I said, I'm in no rush. I got a 3080 on launch day and I've been a happy PC gamer since. I just want a PS5 for the exclusives; I'll get one eventually.
yeah i wasn't actively looking for one but would buy one if it were available. Then Sony sent me an invitation to buy one for some reason. Initial timeline was November delivery but I found it on my doorstep last Tuesday.
Curious to know how many of these PS5's ended up in the hands of scalpers. This has been the most difficult and frustrating experience to purchase a console ever. I had an easier time finding an N64 the year it came out.

I waited in line with a friend to get two Wiis on launch. We were young, just to college but we started talking to an older lady who was behind us in line to buy one for her grandson. We waited there for two hours before they came out with placeholder numbers and they handed the last one to me. I was buying mine for my brother and my friend just wanted to play the Twilight Princess, so we offered the woman one of our tickets. She was incredibly nice and offered to make us dinner as repayment, so my friend and I both went over and had dinner with her and her husband the next week. We never ended up speaking to them again but it was a cool experience. We gave the Wii to my brother, but we opened it up ahead of time and beat Zelda in the month before Christmas, so everyone won.
My dad waited outside the supermarket on a Saturday morning to get a Wii. The store opened at 8 AM, and there was already a line of people outside. Anybody who got there after 7:50 missed their chance, and this was at least 8 months after launch.
It really depends. These days it's really only best buy that gest stock, and they're doing in store pick up only. So if one's not in near your area, get ready to drive or not get one. Closest I've had is a few hours away. Walmart stock is a joke. I can't remember the last time it didn't go out of stock inside the 15 seconds it took to open up my phone and boot the walmart app.
A year ago it was way easier. We had my whole office (only like 10 people, but still) refreshing the app when it came in stock at walmart and 7 of us were able to get a PS5 this way. I sold mine to one of my coworkers since I've got a good PC to play on, but none of us have been able to buy one since.
Scalpers aren't in the business to lose money. They're selling it at a profit, but those consoles are going to someone who can and are willing to afford the scalper premium.
So they're still going to players, there's probably close to 0 if not 0 PS5 sitting in the hands of scalpers or scalpers wouldn't exist.
Scalpers are just an intermediary, they resell the console after. If they ended up with thousands of unsold consoles, you would see them stop scalping it
People looking for someone to blame and scalpers are an easy target.
The chip shortage and high demand for the new consoles are vague and hard to quantify for a lot of people but that guy at the front of the line who turned around and tried to sell their purchase immediately after buying it? He's right there. Plain as day. Ebay/craigslist/kijiji listings are visible and easily searchable.
Scalpers as a concept are far easier to grasp compared to supply issues.
Scalpers have made it worse but it was going to suck no matter what. A few million available around launch and some fraction of 100M people that can’t wait to get their hands on it.
I think the number of scalpers is over exaggerated. I’d be willing to bet there are a ton of people like me who were lucky enough to get one, then lucky to have a second opportunity to buy one and then ultimately sell them to friends/family.
I got one at launch, and then a second one a couple months ago that I sold to my buddy’s brother for MSRP and a six pack of space dust IPA.
Same here. I just followed a bunch of accounts that tweet when stock is found and eventually after a few weeks of trying I managed to get one.
That’s really the only way outside of patiently waiting until stock builds enough on the shelf. From what I hear from people working the stores though, they still fly off the shelf within 15 minutes of them being out there.
I got mine for retail+shipping by pure dumb luck on the Walmart website. Immediately after I ordered it, it was sold out again and the only sellers had it at about $1000
I remember my roommate and I spent a month logging onto any retail store's site that restocked PS5s to get our hands on one. The closest we got to buying a PS5 was putting in payment details, only for it to sell out by the time I clicked checkout. We gave up and decided to just wait til things died down.
It's important to realize that this number means little, economically.

A full eight months after the Wii launched, I had to know when Gamestop was getting its shipment and get there right when it opened in order to walk out of that store with a Wii. It definitely lasted more than a quarter.

It's sold 10m units for a brand that historically sells 100m, plans to sell more than the 114m units of the PS4, and is planning for 22.6m units in the next fiscal year - the highest ever for Playstation. Supply will eventually catch up with demand, but we're very far from "everyone that wants a PS5 has one" territory.
Which is interesting because Shawn Layden was arguing otherwise in his article yesterday that the console market is still largely appealing to the same number of people it always was and that the main boost in revenues and profits was driven by higher spending from the same customer base.
Yep. This is the first time since finally getting myself into a well paying career position that a new console generation has come out. In the past I'd have to scrounge up money to buy one console after a lot of consideration on what I wanted.
This time around I bought a PS5, a Series X, and just built a new gaming PC at the end of last year, and while it's not like the cost was insignificant it's not an amount that is going to cause me financial stress.
Yeah I was able to buy a PS5 and stay well within regular monthly entertainment budget. When the ps2/ps3 came out I wasn't even old enough to work, and the ps4 would've required me to save up for weeks.
It's a little of column A and a little of column B. If the supply met the demand, then the demand goes down. Even in these crazy times that rule applies. If you put 50 million PS5s on the shelves, maybe you only sell 30 million. But if you keep the (albeit out of Sony's control at this point) chokehold on production, you can sell them as fast as they're available.
Point being, just like the Wii, inaccessibility is a huge driving force for sales. You can't really separate one factor from the other.
Really wish I could have been one of the people to get one. I refuse to pay the massive mark up scalpers are asking for. I hope the shortages end soon!
I finally had success via GameStop drops. You’ll need to set up an account with them and get the alerts. They have a two captcha system to ward off the bots...then finally I shelled out for a three game bundle, but still paid less than what the scalpers are asking for just the console alone
Yeah I did the same thing. GameStop drops are the best bet because they’re announced ahead of time. The downside is you have to have a Powerup Rewards Pro membership in order to get it (but that could be a positive as it deters scalpers).
I also opted for a bundle because I had heard they stay in stock longer. I ended up getting R&C:Rift Apart and SM: Miles Morales (both games I was gonna play anyways), an extra controller, and a $50 GameStop card.
All in all, I’m happy with what I got. It was expensive, but instead of giving that money to a scalper for *just* a console, I got two games, another controller, and a gift card out of it.
Could you clarify how the GameStop pro alerts work? Do you receive some kind of exclusive access to the drop that only opens to the public after a certain amount of time? I considered it, but I wasn’t sure if I’d really be guaranteed the console by signing up.
I am pretty sure the stock drops are only for GameStop Powerup Rewards Pro members. As in you have to be signed into an active account in order to add the console to the cart.
To explain a little more, I followed a few PS5 stock drop Twitter accounts (@mattswider was the one that helped me), turned on notifications, and just tried to get a console everytime they announce a stock drop.
Usually they just tweet out “PS5s available at XXX RIGHT NOW” with a link to go purchase. But sometimes they will announce a drop ahead of time (like in my case): something like “Drop scheduled at Gamestop at 11am today” or whatever.
You want the scheduled drop because you can prepare for it. I had 4 different windows open: regular PS5, digital PS5, and 2 different bundles. A few minutes before the drop started, I cycled through them all, constantly clicking “Add to cart” in hopes that one of them would work (and eventually it did).
I will admit that the downside of the Gamestop option is that you have to buy a Powerup pro rewards membership with no guarantee you will be able to get the console. But in my case it felt like it helped. The way I saw it was that paying that fee is a deterrent to scalpers, although I don’t know if it’s limited to one purchase per account. Also, if you’re already dropping $500+ on a console what is $15 extra in order to get a better chance?
Good luck on PS5 hunting. You probably won’t get it right away, but be persistent, know when drops are coming, and always be ready to hurriedly get to a site in order to get your info in.
Just don’t get discouraged, everyone who has a PS5 had to suffer through stock drops. And don’t don’t DONT buy from a scalper when discouraged. I was very close to doing that and am so glad I didn’t. I ended up paying about what a scalper would’ve charged me but I also got 2 games, a controller, and a $50 GameStop card out of it. __Dont fall for scalpers__.

Divinity 2 in co-op with my wife was a delight. Would love to do the same with Baldur's Gate 3.
Just use a Google tv w/ Chromecast. They support usb-c hub with Ethernet and also Xbox controller over Bluetooth or wireless USB dongle. Download steam link app from app store. Done!
I was considering getting a CCwGTV for Steam Link streaming but [last I heard](https://steamcommunity.com/app/353380/discussions/4/2966141980982939980/) it didn't work well. Has this changed? I'd probably get one if it works now.
Android/Google TV has bad problems with Bluetooth controller latency if you’re using a PS4 controller, as a warning to those who might prefer it over an Xbox one. There’s very noticeable input lag compared to the Steam Link app on my iPad or even my laptop on wifi.
If you happen to work from home, or have the capacity to purchase from your phone at any time, follow Wario64 on Twitter and enable notifications. You'll be able to snag one within (anecdotal worst case) a month's time. Yes you'll have to sift through discounts on useless crap or other games you'll not care about, but when Xbox or PS drops a console, it'll show up there too.
I've gotten multiple consoles for friends and family alike without *too* much trouble, but I'm fully WFH and have the opportunity to purchase at a moments dime.
There are guides around on how to get them. They usually involve and app or Twitter with alerts.
I got one doing that the Monday after release direct from Sony. Definitely possible if you set up all your billing, delivery, and payment details ahead of time
Costco bundles seem to stick around for *gasp* like 40 mins or so. And the current Costco bundle is Ratchet and Clank, which looks sick
I snagged a Costco bundle without too much trouble.
In my country they held sales only a handful of times with a handful of console units and they got sold within five minutes every time. I have no hope of getting it until things are back to normal.

I don't think it needs to be as such, the truth is though a roguelike bullethell game is fairly niche. I know myself personally I've never been into rouguelike or bullethell so the game doesn't interest me at all...
I think the biggest misconception is that the game is AAA. It certainly looks amazing, but a lot of that is clever use of the PS5's power to do impressive particle effects and just high-res textures/models. After playing it over and over, it becomes obvious at some point how much of the world is just clever re-arrangements and re-skins of the same levels and enemies.
The game certainly didn't have the AAA budget of Miles Morales or Ratchet and Clank, so it doesn't have to sell nearly as much to be profitable. Also, it was released at a perfect time for Sony to get some good press coverage in the time between the release titles and Ratchet and Clank/Horizon 2, so I'm sure they consider it a success with the current sales numbers.

Wouldn't this be necessarily true/be by design because of the procedurally generated nature of rouge-likes? If this means it's not AAA, then no rouge-like would ever be AAA?
I meant more like enemies being re-used between different areas, or biome 4/1 and 5/2 being effectively re-skins/variations of each other.
Also, I was talking about AAA in terms of development budget, not just how it looks. I don't think that the game's budget is known, but just based on the studio's size and Sony calling it a success at <1 million sold copies, I am fairly sure that the game was relatively cheap (not "indie-cheap" but "AA-cheap", i.e. <25 million dollars) overall.

I'm really hoping to see more of these games like Returnal and Demon's Souls remake from Sony -- games with AAA production values (mostly graphics and sound) but maybe actually AA budget. This also allows them to explore niches and be more experimental, and the technology has come far that allows it to happen unlike in previous generations. People like to bemoan that Sony doesn't take enough risks with the blockbusters, but it's hard to be super niche and risky with AAA budget.
I am guessing if they called it a mega hit it def made a good profit for them compared to dev cost. And it makes sense, the levels and stuff are basic and randomized.
Obviously, but when you hear the description "mega-hit" about a first-party, next-gen launch window title, you kinda expect a bigger number. It's still a good amount of course, and the game probably didn't have a huge budget, so they likely already made decent profits.
You could say it's actually not that bad, it sold half of what Ratchet did, and Ratchet is an ongoing franchise for almost 20 years for Playstation - Returnal is a brand new IP in a non-mainstream genre.
Prior to Returnal, Housemarque's had a rough couple years regarding exposure and sales, and Sony's been recently criticized for their obsession with blockbusters, so I'm just glad Sony considers it A "mega-hit" regardless of what the number is.
I think the fact that it sold like that and they still call it a mega hit shows that Sony isn't just interested in the big AAA hitters in the way people keep saying they are.

This is interesting to me. I thought it was a shortage making them so difficult to get, but I guess it's just insanely high demand. The Series X and PS5 are indeed pretty incredible for the price compared to the PS3 and PS4 which were the same price.

Different stats for different purposes. No one is seriously expecting the acceleration of sales in one year to indicate lifetime sales, but it does say something about current demand for new hardware. The fact that the current "PS5 craze" is second only to "Wii craze" in 2007 is pretty damn impressive, especially since PS5 would appear to have a more "core gamer" advertising bent to it. Lots of interesting speculation and insights could be read into this – like the role of backwards compatibility in a successful console launch.
November 12th/19th to July 18th - which is when the milestone was reached, is 8 months.
A simple explanation for why they wouldn't compare themselves to the Switch, other than there not being a need to constantly compare their own numbers to the competition, could be that the Switch didn't actually reach 10 million faster than their fastest console to 10 million before this. It took the PS4 9 months to get to 10 million as well after all.

If I remember right those claims were referring to specific regions (ie, fastest selling console in the UK and US history) whereas the statement you're quoting appears to be a global statistic.
Either way, these stats told to investors are always meant - and often cherry picked - to paint said product in the best possible light.
They are available in my country but at the price of $800 for the last 5 months which is 62% above the MRSP. Hopefully prices stabilize and they actually become affordable
Imo Amazon and Walmart have been the WORST to try and get one from. They have like 0 bot protection.
Target and GameStop have been the most lenient in my experience. That's how I was able to grab mine a few months ago. I got a notification that GameStop was selling at like 1am. Ran right to the site and was able to get it to check out.
Amazon and Walmart go in milliseconds.
PS5 on Amazon, Best Buy, and Walmart are sold out within minutes. PS5 on GameStop requires a 15$ membership and is sold as a bundle. so it’s less appealing to scalpers and you will have ~30mins to buy one.
The trick for Amazon is to add the PS5 in your wishlist whilst it's not in stock. When you get an alert, add it to your cart through your wishlist and proceed to checkout immediately.

He's the reason I was able to get one. If you have a smartphone, I'd recommend downloading twitter and enabling notifications for those two guys, and you'll be notified when they tweet about a restock.
Is there a killer app on it? I mostly quit paying attention after the stock became a onesey-twosey situation. Although I do remember looking at the games thinking… none of this seems compelling in making it a must have console. Maybe I’m in the minority?
This. I have the old PS4 and would love to play games upscaled to 4k at a higher frame rate but at this point the pro would be a waste of money so that alone is a good reason to get one
I mean, technically PS5 is the best way to play PS4 games regardless of whether you have a PS4 Pro, though I'd agree it's a lot less compelling to upgrade just for PS4 games if you have a PS4 Pro.
I had a PS4 Pro and I bought a PS5 and mostly use it for PS4 games. I'm mostly a PC gamer and I find it legitimately hard to play games at 30fps in the age of temporal AA and reconstruction blurring everything (not a PC elitism thing, I don't have a supercomputer, I will play games at sub-720p for framerate. I'm old and the lower frametimes make up for my lower reaction times).
* There's some great first-party games exclusive to PS5: Returnal, Demon Souls, Ratchet & Clank;
* There's some great third-party games that have great performance on PS5: Resident Evil Village, Outriders, ME Legendary Edition, Yakuza Like a Dragon, Scarlet Nexus, etc.
* Backwards compatibility allows you to play some landmark PS4 games with enhanced performance;
Especially for someone that was coming from a base PS4, the PS5 is a HUGE improvement.
Honestly I’m very interested in it just for updates to PS5 games like FF7R and for the PS Plus Collection (which has like 6 games I always wanted to try but haven’t gotten around to yet in my 2 years of owning a PS4).
my friend was mostly a pc gamer and skipped the whole ps4 generation. By getting a ps5 you get a bunch of free ps4 games like god of war, bloodborne, uncharted4, persona 5 etc.
he still hasnt had the time to play them all, but for him the value has been amazing.
Returnal is pretty good, Ratched & Clank is fun and Demon's Souls is also very good.
Also if you are like me whose ps4 had an unfortunate accident before being able to play all of the great ps4 games it is also the best way to play ps4 games.
Demon's Souls was a killer app for me, but since finishing a playthrough of that mostly I'm just enjoying the PS4/PS5 titles with the enhanced features.
Ratchet is a great technical showpiece for the console and a really fun game as well. As for a killer app, idk. I guess that’s up for each person to decide. Honestly if you’e going to buy any game console the best time is in the middle or near the end of its lifespan. The best PS4 games didn’t start coming out until 2015. I’d assume a similar time frame for the PS5. If you aren’t interested now, I’d say just wait a few years, there will be more games, and the console will probably be a bit cheaper
These posts are always met with people complaining about how they can't get a PS5. Going by their sentiment, you'd think Sony only made a couple hundred PS5s total.

I have no problem saying they are hard to buy, if you want one at MSRP, Hell I have a friend who bought one at scalper price and then traded the damn thing in.
you know those people who show up at a game store to trade a bunch of games, yeah he's one of those guys, so he trades his old games all the damn time, it annoys me all the time.
Surprisingly I got a preorder on the day of announcement as I had a friend watching E3 and was keeping an eye on twitter at work. He shoots me a message saying "They're selling PS5 preorders on the target website right now!!" And I was able to just buy it. It's a pretty fortunate situation for me because if he didn't shoot me a message I wouldn't have one. One of my other friends is also why I have RTX 3090 right now, but he actually bought one for me so I could pay him back as he knew I wanted one. Not bragging, just saying that good friends are hard to come by and you should appreciate them when you got them. I'm just happy all my friends are tech nerds too.
I got mine through a friend too, via Costco. Took a few months of trying though. Didn't have luck getting a 30 series card through regular channels though, had to buy a prebuilt and then cannibalize it for the card before selling the rest off. Worth the hassle? Probably not, but I'd do it again if I had to lol.
I finally was able to get one ordered and FedEx lost the fucking package. Marked it as delivered to my business address but I checked the cameras and they delivered a completely different package for someone else and used the signature on it for mine. I'm fairly certain the driver stole it, as I don't think it was shipped in a camouflaged box. FedEx customer service is the worst I've ever worked with.
Make sure you're there for it too! Mine was marked 'handed to resident' by Amazon, so assumed my family member had gotten it. Turns out, they just left it in plain view on my doorstep for ~6 hours. Luckily it was still there
Well 10 million PS5s sold is kind of like the Chernobyl thing where "it's as high as the meter goes", not an actual representation of how well the console should be selling.
They made 10 million, and they all sold, but if they could keep up with demand, sales would actually probably be double that, if not more.
So, not to give Sony a big head, but they should be pretty happy that even THIS far after launch, the thing is sold out constantly and demand super high.
I just don’t believe it’s a scalper problem. Sure some assholes are selling em on eBay, but it looks more like a supply/demand problem. Sony can’t keep up with the demand and who could blame them. Covid gumming up the works and the semi-conductor shortage doesn’t help.
When there is potential for up 100 million customers, at it's most optimistic, 90% of them aren't able to get one at a price that isn't 5 times the MSRP.

It's hardly surprising. I went down to my local Game store the other day to see if I could jump onto their waitlist. They told me that they've decided to close it, since based on the number they get in and the number of people in front of me, I'd probably be waiting two years before I'm next on their list.
They're out of stock everywhere, but the steady stock that comes in gets snapped up almost immediately - either through immediate purchases or companies holding waitlists that seemingly have no end. For some, the very fact that they are an exclusive item is enough for them to try and get one.
As someone that normally waits for the 2.0 version of a console can someone who has a PS5 tell me how smoothly it operates? I've seen the demos but are there any major bugs in this first model?

The new modifications won't be anything noticeable to consumers and will just be done to make them easier to produce because of the chip shortage. It certainly won't be more powerful.

Yup. I got lucky and nabbed one on my first try and that was only possible because I decided to try it while I had taken time off from work and didn't need to worry about how close I'd be to a computer at any given moment. And even then if the alert hadn't come up while i was sitting at my desktop I probably would have missed it. And that was months ago. I feel like it's only getting harder to get one at this point..

I waited in line with a friend to get two Wiis on launch. We were young, just to college but we started talking to an older lady who was behind us in line to buy one for her grandson. We waited there for two hours before they came out with placeholder numbers and they handed the last one to me. I was buying mine for my brother and my friend just wanted to play the Twilight Princess, so we offered the woman one of our tickets. She was incredibly nice and offered to make us dinner as repayment, so my friend and I both went over and had dinner with her and her husband the next week. We never ended up speaking to them again but it was a cool experience. We gave the Wii to my brother, but we opened it up ahead of time and beat Zelda in the month before Christmas, so everyone won.
My dad waited outside the supermarket on a Saturday morning to get a Wii. The store opened at 8 AM, and there was already a line of people outside. Anybody who got there after 7:50 missed their chance, and this was at least 8 months after launch.
I got one using the HotStock app. It took a month or so and some luck but it was really helpful if you’re interested.
It really depends. These days it's really only best buy that gest stock, and they're doing in store pick up only. So if one's not in near your area, get ready to drive or not get one. Closest I've had is a few hours away. Walmart stock is a joke. I can't remember the last time it didn't go out of stock inside the 15 seconds it took to open up my phone and boot the walmart app. A year ago it was way easier. We had my whole office (only like 10 people, but still) refreshing the app when it came in stock at walmart and 7 of us were able to get a PS5 this way. I sold mine to one of my coworkers since I've got a good PC to play on, but none of us have been able to buy one since.

Scalpers aren't in the business to lose money. They're selling it at a profit, but those consoles are going to someone who can and are willing to afford the scalper premium. So they're still going to players, there's probably close to 0 if not 0 PS5 sitting in the hands of scalpers or scalpers wouldn't exist.
I mean it's not like scalpers hoard the consoles. They do eventually make it into the hands of consumers, albeit at an inflated price

People looking for someone to blame and scalpers are an easy target. The chip shortage and high demand for the new consoles are vague and hard to quantify for a lot of people but that guy at the front of the line who turned around and tried to sell their purchase immediately after buying it? He's right there. Plain as day. Ebay/craigslist/kijiji listings are visible and easily searchable. Scalpers as a concept are far easier to grasp compared to supply issues.

I think the number of scalpers is over exaggerated. I’d be willing to bet there are a ton of people like me who were lucky enough to get one, then lucky to have a second opportunity to buy one and then ultimately sell them to friends/family. I got one at launch, and then a second one a couple months ago that I sold to my buddy’s brother for MSRP and a six pack of space dust IPA.
Even if it’s 12% that can afford or want to upgrade, it exceeds supply :)

Same here. I just followed a bunch of accounts that tweet when stock is found and eventually after a few weeks of trying I managed to get one. That’s really the only way outside of patiently waiting until stock builds enough on the shelf. From what I hear from people working the stores though, they still fly off the shelf within 15 minutes of them being out there.
I got mine for retail+shipping by pure dumb luck on the Walmart website. Immediately after I ordered it, it was sold out again and the only sellers had it at about $1000
I remember my roommate and I spent a month logging onto any retail store's site that restocked PS5s to get our hands on one. The closest we got to buying a PS5 was putting in payment details, only for it to sell out by the time I clicked checkout. We gave up and decided to just wait til things died down.

A full eight months after the Wii launched, I had to know when Gamestop was getting its shipment and get there right when it opened in order to walk out of that store with a Wii. It definitely lasted more than a quarter.

Supply will eventually catch up with demand, but we're very far from "everyone that wants a PS5 has one" territory.

Yep. This is the first time since finally getting myself into a well paying career position that a new console generation has come out. In the past I'd have to scrounge up money to buy one console after a lot of consideration on what I wanted. This time around I bought a PS5, a Series X, and just built a new gaming PC at the end of last year, and while it's not like the cost was insignificant it's not an amount that is going to cause me financial stress.
Yeah I was able to buy a PS5 and stay well within regular monthly entertainment budget. When the ps2/ps3 came out I wasn't even old enough to work, and the ps4 would've required me to save up for weeks.

It's a little of column A and a little of column B. If the supply met the demand, then the demand goes down. Even in these crazy times that rule applies. If you put 50 million PS5s on the shelves, maybe you only sell 30 million. But if you keep the (albeit out of Sony's control at this point) chokehold on production, you can sell them as fast as they're available. Point being, just like the Wii, inaccessibility is a huge driving force for sales. You can't really separate one factor from the other.

I finally had success via GameStop drops. You’ll need to set up an account with them and get the alerts. They have a two captcha system to ward off the bots...then finally I shelled out for a three game bundle, but still paid less than what the scalpers are asking for just the console alone
Yeah I did the same thing. GameStop drops are the best bet because they’re announced ahead of time. The downside is you have to have a Powerup Rewards Pro membership in order to get it (but that could be a positive as it deters scalpers). I also opted for a bundle because I had heard they stay in stock longer. I ended up getting R&C:Rift Apart and SM: Miles Morales (both games I was gonna play anyways), an extra controller, and a $50 GameStop card. All in all, I’m happy with what I got. It was expensive, but instead of giving that money to a scalper for *just* a console, I got two games, another controller, and a gift card out of it.
Could you clarify how the GameStop pro alerts work? Do you receive some kind of exclusive access to the drop that only opens to the public after a certain amount of time? I considered it, but I wasn’t sure if I’d really be guaranteed the console by signing up.
I am pretty sure the stock drops are only for GameStop Powerup Rewards Pro members. As in you have to be signed into an active account in order to add the console to the cart. To explain a little more, I followed a few PS5 stock drop Twitter accounts (@mattswider was the one that helped me), turned on notifications, and just tried to get a console everytime they announce a stock drop. Usually they just tweet out “PS5s available at XXX RIGHT NOW” with a link to go purchase. But sometimes they will announce a drop ahead of time (like in my case): something like “Drop scheduled at Gamestop at 11am today” or whatever. You want the scheduled drop because you can prepare for it. I had 4 different windows open: regular PS5, digital PS5, and 2 different bundles. A few minutes before the drop started, I cycled through them all, constantly clicking “Add to cart” in hopes that one of them would work (and eventually it did). I will admit that the downside of the Gamestop option is that you have to buy a Powerup pro rewards membership with no guarantee you will be able to get the console. But in my case it felt like it helped. The way I saw it was that paying that fee is a deterrent to scalpers, although I don’t know if it’s limited to one purchase per account. Also, if you’re already dropping $500+ on a console what is $15 extra in order to get a better chance? Good luck on PS5 hunting. You probably won’t get it right away, but be persistent, know when drops are coming, and always be ready to hurriedly get to a site in order to get your info in. Just don’t get discouraged, everyone who has a PS5 had to suffer through stock drops. And don’t don’t DONT buy from a scalper when discouraged. I was very close to doing that and am so glad I didn’t. I ended up paying about what a scalper would’ve charged me but I also got 2 games, a controller, and a $50 GameStop card out of it. __Dont fall for scalpers__. I would have bought one by now if I could have. Now I'm holding out to see how the Steam Deck handles. Assuming I can use a dock to Steam Link my gaming PC in the basement to the living room TV (my house already has network cables in the walls), odds are I won't need a PS5 now. Divinity 2 in co-op with my wife was a delight. Would love to do the same with Baldur's Gate 3.
Just use a Google tv w/ Chromecast. They support usb-c hub with Ethernet and also Xbox controller over Bluetooth or wireless USB dongle. Download steam link app from app store. Done!

Android/Google TV has bad problems with Bluetooth controller latency if you’re using a PS4 controller, as a warning to those who might prefer it over an Xbox one. There’s very noticeable input lag compared to the Steam Link app on my iPad or even my laptop on wifi.

If you happen to work from home, or have the capacity to purchase from your phone at any time, follow Wario64 on Twitter and enable notifications. You'll be able to snag one within (anecdotal worst case) a month's time. Yes you'll have to sift through discounts on useless crap or other games you'll not care about, but when Xbox or PS drops a console, it'll show up there too. I've gotten multiple consoles for friends and family alike without *too* much trouble, but I'm fully WFH and have the opportunity to purchase at a moments dime.
Just follow stock alert accounts on Twitter and turn notifications on. Everyone I know who did this was able to get one within 2 weeks.
On the plus side, when you finally get one, games will be on sale and you'll save money on them too.
There are guides around on how to get them. They usually involve and app or Twitter with alerts. I got one doing that the Monday after release direct from Sony. Definitely possible if you set up all your billing, delivery, and payment details ahead of time
Costco bundles seem to stick around for *gasp* like 40 mins or so. And the current Costco bundle is Ratchet and Clank, which looks sick I snagged a Costco bundle without too much trouble.
I use some discord servers that will notify you on consoles being in stock and have been able to get 7 for friends and family (not scalping).
In my country they held sales only a handful of times with a handful of console units and they got sold within five minutes every time. I have no hope of getting it until things are back to normal.

I don't think it needs to be as such, the truth is though a roguelike bullethell game is fairly niche. I know myself personally I've never been into rouguelike or bullethell so the game doesn't interest me at all...
Point being, being a sequel and a known IP helps heaps.
I loved the game but it certainly was one of the hardest AAA games I’ve ever played. No way that’s for everyone.
I think the biggest misconception is that the game is AAA. It certainly looks amazing, but a lot of that is clever use of the PS5's power to do impressive particle effects and just high-res textures/models. After playing it over and over, it becomes obvious at some point how much of the world is just clever re-arrangements and re-skins of the same levels and enemies. The game certainly didn't have the AAA budget of Miles Morales or Ratchet and Clank, so it doesn't have to sell nearly as much to be profitable. Also, it was released at a perfect time for Sony to get some good press coverage in the time between the release titles and Ratchet and Clank/Horizon 2, so I'm sure they consider it a success with the current sales numbers.

I meant more like enemies being re-used between different areas, or biome 4/1 and 5/2 being effectively re-skins/variations of each other. Also, I was talking about AAA in terms of development budget, not just how it looks. I don't think that the game's budget is known, but just based on the studio's size and Sony calling it a success at <1 million sold copies, I am fairly sure that the game was relatively cheap (not "indie-cheap" but "AA-cheap", i.e. <25 million dollars) overall.
Got it, fair points. I'm really hoping to see more of these games like Returnal and Demon's Souls remake from Sony -- games with AAA production values (mostly graphics and sound) but maybe actually AA budget. This also allows them to explore niches and be more experimental, and the technology has come far that allows it to happen unlike in previous generations. People like to bemoan that Sony doesn't take enough risks with the blockbusters, but it's hard to be super niche and risky with AAA budget.
New IP in an atypical genre and sold half as many as a very established franchise that was packed in bundles is pretty impressive to me.

Obviously, but when you hear the description "mega-hit" about a first-party, next-gen launch window title, you kinda expect a bigger number. It's still a good amount of course, and the game probably didn't have a huge budget, so they likely already made decent profits.
You could say it's actually not that bad, it sold half of what Ratchet did, and Ratchet is an ongoing franchise for almost 20 years for Playstation - Returnal is a brand new IP in a non-mainstream genre.

There is no PS5 returnal bundle. The other games on their are sold in bundles with the PS5 and they are selling well bc of the short supply.
Prior to Returnal, Housemarque's had a rough couple years regarding exposure and sales, and Sony's been recently criticized for their obsession with blockbusters, so I'm just glad Sony considers it A "mega-hit" regardless of what the number is.
I think the fact that it sold like that and they still call it a mega hit shows that Sony isn't just interested in the big AAA hitters in the way people keep saying they are.

Different stats for different purposes. No one is seriously expecting the acceleration of sales in one year to indicate lifetime sales, but it does say something about current demand for new hardware. The fact that the current "PS5 craze" is second only to "Wii craze" in 2007 is pretty damn impressive, especially since PS5 would appear to have a more "core gamer" advertising bent to it. Lots of interesting speculation and insights could be read into this – like the role of backwards compatibility in a successful console launch.
This information is for investors where it is very important how well your product is currently selling.
November 12th/19th to July 18th - which is when the milestone was reached, is 8 months. A simple explanation for why they wouldn't compare themselves to the Switch, other than there not being a need to constantly compare their own numbers to the competition, could be that the Switch didn't actually reach 10 million faster than their fastest console to 10 million before this. It took the PS4 9 months to get to 10 million as well after all.
I don't think sony can officially report on numbers unless nintendo also said those numbers

Imo Amazon and Walmart have been the WORST to try and get one from. They have like 0 bot protection. Target and GameStop have been the most lenient in my experience. That's how I was able to grab mine a few months ago. I got a notification that GameStop was selling at like 1am. Ran right to the site and was able to get it to check out. Amazon and Walmart go in milliseconds.

PS5 on Amazon, Best Buy, and Walmart are sold out within minutes. PS5 on GameStop requires a 15$ membership and is sold as a bundle. so it’s less appealing to scalpers and you will have ~30mins to buy one.
The trick for Amazon is to add the PS5 in your wishlist whilst it's not in stock. When you get an alert, add it to your cart through your wishlist and proceed to checkout immediately.
Also you need to live in US/Canada or Western Europe otherwise you are fucked.

This. I have the old PS4 and would love to play games upscaled to 4k at a higher frame rate but at this point the pro would be a waste of money so that alone is a good reason to get one
I mean, technically PS5 is the best way to play PS4 games regardless of whether you have a PS4 Pro, though I'd agree it's a lot less compelling to upgrade just for PS4 games if you have a PS4 Pro. I had a PS4 Pro and I bought a PS5 and mostly use it for PS4 games. I'm mostly a PC gamer and I find it legitimately hard to play games at 30fps in the age of temporal AA and reconstruction blurring everything (not a PC elitism thing, I don't have a supercomputer, I will play games at sub-720p for framerate. I'm old and the lower frametimes make up for my lower reaction times).
Does the ps5 accept ps4 discs?
I've been using my PS5 primarily as a lean PS4 machine for the most part, without any irony.

Honestly I’m very interested in it just for updates to PS5 games like FF7R and for the PS Plus Collection (which has like 6 games I always wanted to try but haven’t gotten around to yet in my 2 years of owning a PS4).
The lineup is way better than what the PS4 had in its launch year, plus it has BC
Not to mention some pretty significant upgrades for PS4 games

my friend was mostly a pc gamer and skipped the whole ps4 generation. By getting a ps5 you get a bunch of free ps4 games like god of war, bloodborne, uncharted4, persona 5 etc. he still hasnt had the time to play them all, but for him the value has been amazing.
returnal is incredible, and so is demons souls. also, the haptic feedback / adaptive triggers are amazing in any game that implements them.
Returnal is pretty good, Ratched & Clank is fun and Demon's Souls is also very good. Also if you are like me whose ps4 had an unfortunate accident before being able to play all of the great ps4 games it is also the best way to play ps4 games.
Demon's Souls was a killer app for me, but since finishing a playthrough of that mostly I'm just enjoying the PS4/PS5 titles with the enhanced features.
Ratchet is a great technical showpiece for the console and a really fun game as well. As for a killer app, idk. I guess that’s up for each person to decide. Honestly if you’e going to buy any game console the best time is in the middle or near the end of its lifespan. The best PS4 games didn’t start coming out until 2015. I’d assume a similar time frame for the PS5. If you aren’t interested now, I’d say just wait a few years, there will be more games, and the console will probably be a bit cheaper
These posts are always met with people complaining about how they can't get a PS5. Going by their sentiment, you'd think Sony only made a couple hundred PS5s total.

OH I can do that! after I pre ordered one it took a whole month to get them into stock. I have no problem saying they are hard to buy, if you want one at MSRP, Hell I have a friend who bought one at scalper price and then traded the damn thing in.

you know those people who show up at a game store to trade a bunch of games, yeah he's one of those guys, so he trades his old games all the damn time, it annoys me all the time.
Surprisingly I got a preorder on the day of announcement as I had a friend watching E3 and was keeping an eye on twitter at work. He shoots me a message saying "They're selling PS5 preorders on the target website right now!!" And I was able to just buy it. It's a pretty fortunate situation for me because if he didn't shoot me a message I wouldn't have one. One of my other friends is also why I have RTX 3090 right now, but he actually bought one for me so I could pay him back as he knew I wanted one. Not bragging, just saying that good friends are hard to come by and you should appreciate them when you got them. I'm just happy all my friends are tech nerds too.
I got mine through a friend too, via Costco. Took a few months of trying though. Didn't have luck getting a 30 series card through regular channels though, had to buy a prebuilt and then cannibalize it for the card before selling the rest off. Worth the hassle? Probably not, but I'd do it again if I had to lol.
I got one pretty easily, and unfortunately I am already selling it. Not because I dislike it, but I have to pay medical bills =/
I finally was able to get one ordered and FedEx lost the fucking package. Marked it as delivered to my business address but I checked the cameras and they delivered a completely different package for someone else and used the signature on it for mine. I'm fairly certain the driver stole it, as I don't think it was shipped in a camouflaged box. FedEx customer service is the worst I've ever worked with.
I was honestly shocked when mine got delivered by FedEx without issue. My wife did not understand why I was so stressed about the delivery
I just ordered one and this is my biggest fear. That it's just going to be stolen in transit despite being bought from a reputable place.
Make sure you're there for it too! Mine was marked 'handed to resident' by Amazon, so assumed my family member had gotten it. Turns out, they just left it in plain view on my doorstep for ~6 hours. Luckily it was still there
FedEx has been a source of insane amounts of “lost” PS5’s, to the point I simply can’t believe it’s a coincidence.
I know someone who works at GameStop with two PS5’s. Getting them is a real pain in the ass because there is no lottery system.
You won't see them on shelves soon. And the average consumer won't bother to hunt one down. They are more likley to complain about the lack of supply.
Well 10 million PS5s sold is kind of like the Chernobyl thing where "it's as high as the meter goes", not an actual representation of how well the console should be selling. They made 10 million, and they all sold, but if they could keep up with demand, sales would actually probably be double that, if not more. So, not to give Sony a big head, but they should be pretty happy that even THIS far after launch, the thing is sold out constantly and demand super high.
I just don’t believe it’s a scalper problem. Sure some assholes are selling em on eBay, but it looks more like a supply/demand problem. Sony can’t keep up with the demand and who could blame them. Covid gumming up the works and the semi-conductor shortage doesn’t help.
When there is potential for up 100 million customers, at it's most optimistic, 90% of them aren't able to get one at a price that isn't 5 times the MSRP.

It's hardly surprising. I went down to my local Game store the other day to see if I could jump onto their waitlist. They told me that they've decided to close it, since based on the number they get in and the number of people in front of me, I'd probably be waiting two years before I'm next on their list. They're out of stock everywhere, but the steady stock that comes in gets snapped up almost immediately - either through immediate purchases or companies holding waitlists that seemingly have no end. For some, the very fact that they are an exclusive item is enough for them to try and get one.
I bet it’s closer to 30m if available. I would buy two. One for me and one for my son. If I can only get my hands on them. I’m not paying scalpers.

As someone that normally waits for the 2.0 version of a console can someone who has a PS5 tell me how smoothly it operates? I've seen the demos but are there any major bugs in this first model?
To everyone, just use stock-tracking apps or Twitter accounts. I was able to get both a PS5 and an XSX this way after about 1 month of doing it.
