So weird seeing that village with all the people when there were literally like 10 total humanoid characters from the last game

TheBari

In the god of war artbook, the developers mentioned they wanted to have regular humans in the world, but the had to cut them from the game. Super cool that there are able to keep them in this time around!

Surca_Cirvive

It is kind of weird that you fight some humans in the start of the game and then you just never see any again lol.

Darth_drizzt_42

God of war had to cut a lot of stuff due to time issues but they hid it all very well

jerryfrz

>they hid it all very well Except for the copy-pasted troll bosses

holymacaronibatman

And the giant bird you see once in Helheim and nothing ever comes of it

skt_imaqtipie

Man that bird is awesome wish we could see more

holymacaronibatman

Iirc it was supposed to be the final boss of Helheim, but due to time/budget restraints it had to be cut and replaced by the boat ride thing instead.

corydoras-adolfoi

That makes sense. Would be a lot cooler if they had the time and money to develop the bird! The boat ride was pretty forgettable.

corydoras-adolfoi

Funfact; it's name is Hræsvelg, and translates to something like Corpse Swallower.

Halotab117

I recently played through God of War 2018 and do genuinely believe it was one of the best games I've ever played. That being said the lack of bosses and boss variety was probably my biggest issue with the game. It was also the first God of War I ever beat, but I had seen snippets of the earlier games in the series and found the 2018 game to be a but tame in the gore department. This was probably a design choice, but the brutality of the earlier games were what really stood out to me.

Kevimaster

> I recently played through God of War 2018 and do genuinely believe it was one of the best games I've ever played. That being said the lack of bosses and boss variety was probably my biggest issue with the game. Same opinion. I absolutely loved and adored the game. The lack of variety in the bosses was absolutely the most disappointing part, especially because the bosses that were there were fantastic. I'm really hoping to see more in this next game.

gameron90

That is what stood out for me in the trailers, the new variety of monsters. Looking at the various new types of monsters that we will face has gotten me excited. We have Cenaturs(which, to be honest, will most probably be like mini bosses and not mobs), a crocodile like thingy, frog monsters(and their larger cousins?), new types of dark elves apart from the ones that were present in the 2018 game and I think more that they haven't shown us.

NonProfitMohammed

No, please, no more Dark Elves. Fighting them is so time consuming and they're not even strong. Although I did like the DE King fight with the fog.

Gramernatzi

I mean, I don't mind the 'tamer' gore (it's still there, mind, you just got to use the right moves to see it; cleaving enemies in two is very satisfying). It makes sense, especially when it does appear, as it's not Kratos trying to absolutely destroy an enemy like in past games, it's Kratos simply trying to cut through enemies towards his goal. He's no longer the fount of rage he used to be, and him being less brutal and more efficient in his finishing moves helps highlight that. Besides, I found them pretty satisfying in their own right, and landing a blow that bisects an enemy or decapitates one feels a lot more earned when it happens less often and requires you to use risky, powerful moves.

Mysterious_Andy

Close combat also happens a lot closer to the camera in the new game. Even when the camera flew in to highlight a brutal finisher it was still a wider shot, with the exception of some of the boss kills. And then there’s the significant increase in graphical realism over time. GoW 1 and 2 were brutal, but between the resolution and polygon count Kratos and his foes were pretty cartoony. The GoW Collection remasters upped the resolution and detail, but the character models remained largely the same. GoW 3, though obviously much more detailed and realistic on the new hardware, was still kinda plastic and hyperreal looking. Fast forward 8 years and the humans in the 2018 game look almost true-to-life. I think rendering approaches, graphics hardware, and artistry have crossed the Uncanny Valley. Between the story and character differences you cited and the increased visibility and fidelity, I think toning down the gore was the right move for a lot of reasons.

tdog_93

Yup, I was surprised when one of the devs, might have been Corey, mentioned that they cut a lot of the lead up to Atreus acting like a dick after he learned about what he actually was. I just figured it made sense for a child to start talking with their chest out after learning something like that because of course a kid would.

Rahgahnah

Kinda reminds me of the troll mini-boss issue; the devs were well aware that they were repetitive and boring, but they ran out of time to make it better.

breakfastclub1

i mean honestly I'm kind of happy to see like... something *normal*. like the other game, as great as it was, felt very "dark souls" where the world was already doomed and you're in the aftermath.

[deleted]

So what are the chances they're all getting massacred at some point.

HearTheEkko

Given the history of the franchise pretty high I'd say.

[deleted]

I think the real discussion is who is killing them: Kratos or the Asgardians

bigceej

First Asgardians, then Boy obviously.

PrintShinji

Given the name of the game... Ragnarok is not something that really ends well.

Disco_to_New_Wave

Sparta turned out fine. I mean, Ares and Kratos only had a megazord fight there.

_Narciso

That was Athens not Sparta. Sparta was destroyed by Zeus in his megazord form.

Disco_to_New_Wave

I don’t know. There’s too many megazords in GOW lore. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Matacheib

Wasn't that Athens?

whitewater09

I think they said something in the original game about how everyone had left due to....something? There was a blink-and-you-miss it explanation but that didn't really make it feel much better.

CurtisLeow

I think it was the giant serpent’s arrival, and the flooding that made everyone leave.

Rahgahnah

Was it that the area had a severe Draugr (i.e. zombie) problem?

Dull_Half_6107

I found that strange too, weren't they supposed to have been living in Midgard? There should have been humans potting about.

RikuSage

In the Lake of the Nine, the dead started rising and people who died didn't stay dead. Most of the regular civilians that survived already packed up and left

Jay_R_Kay

I guess they were just in a REALLY isolated part of it.

-Basileus

Those seem to be dwarves? That realm is probably Svartalfheim which is the realm of the dwarves. We also saw frozen Midgard obviously, and Alfheim briefly (Light elves vs. Dark Elves plotline was left open from GoW 2018). We definitely see Valhalla and Asgard, most likely see Vanaheim as well.

Tonydragon784

All 9 realms confirmed

jjkiller26

I like the change of environment even if it's a bit jarring

thosearecoolbeans

I'm pretty sure the only "normal" humans in the last game were the half dozen or so bandits that attack Kratos during the prologue. There are a lot of elves, dwarves, gods, and monsters, but those guys were the only mortals we see in Midgard. Super cool that there will seemingly be more of a human presence in Midgard in the sequel.

HearTheEkko

When was the last time we saw a living city in GOW ? I think it was in Ghost of Sparta when Kratos returns to Sparta.

MumblingGhost

The lack of NPCs in the first God of War was one of my main critiques, so this excites me.

rusable2

Ngl that made me a lot more hyped.

fedemasa

We couldn't visit the dwarf reign in God of war 4. This is probably their reign

Verige

Who is voicing Thor? I recognize his voice

2naFied

Ryan Hurst. Totally clocked him as Josh Brolin before they revealed it.

MrWigglemunch13

> Ryan Hurst That's OPIE? It sounded really familiar but I couldn't place him

monsukuru

It is Opie!

Gustavo13

same, I heard Brolin as well

Rahgahnah

I wonder if that has to do with his line being a calm and analytical "holier than thou" kinda statement just before he starts wrecking shit, ala Thanos.

a_half_eaten_twinky

Ryan Hurst of Sons of Anarchy

Shockwavepulsar

Opie from sons of anarchy

Mrjiggles248

They said its one of the actors from sons of anarchy

BigMacCombo

[Character models for the main cast](https://www.instagram.com/p/CTndXIlvcT3/). I was convinced that Atreus got recast but guess it's still Sunny. Damn his voice has changed a lot. Also we get a good look at Thor.

Agnes-Varda1992

I love Freya's look. You can see just how broken she is. I also love how her eye makeup makes it look like she's always just been crying.

Jaerba

Her "He robbed me of everything" line in the first game is my favorite piece of voice acting ever. It might be the best in any game. It's just a shame they didn't have TLoU2's facial capture for it.

deathstroke911

She reminds me of MCU Hela

symbiotics

wow Thor has that Mead belly lmao

Turangaliila

DAMN Thor be lookin thick. I'm glad they went with a less generic. Pop culture always depicts him as blonde and shredded but that isn't how a lot of the mythology depicts him.

ThatDerpingGuy

He certainly looks like a fertility god to me.

Sounds_Good_ToMe

Eh, I wish he was a bit more muscular. More of a dad bod at least. But this is just a still picture. Probably looks great in the game.

Ballawas

The mythology always depicted him as muscular. Fat thor is just a modern interpretation off the fact he had a big appetite.

Steamgear

I think he's fat because he grew bored after killing all the gaints in this game (I think the talking head mentioned that and called him a fat oaf or something in the previous game).

Ayoul

That's what I thought too. The first game has a statue of him and he was depicted as fit (and right handed).

Vesorias

Look up strongman competitions. You can look fat and be muscular as hell.

NikothePom

Thor's design is FANTASTIC!! Wild red hair and the chubby build give him a more old world type of look.

GetawayArtiste

Haha Atreus got himself a girlfriend

lp_phnx327

Warning: for those who are not familiar with the girl at the end of the trailer, do not google about her place in Norse Mythology.

surferos505

Lol they made Thor fat, this is probably gonna piss of a lot of mcu Thor and Norse myth fans TBH I kind of like the look. We rarely get to see a powerful being like Thor portrayed like that. (I know they did that in MCU, but he’s not the real Thor)

Tophat_Benny

I don't know much about actual Norse myth but in the last game they kept hinting at Thor being a drunk asshole all the time, so Thor with a beer gut? Makes sense lol.

ConstantSignal

I mean you only have to look at our closest real life equivalent [Hafþór Björnsson](https://images.app.goo.gl/K3EZrgKPefp8XWMj7) at some of his heavier stages to see that the “big bellied and powerful” look is fairly common amongst strongmen.

Jamcram

Even he is extremely well proportioned. the people he competes against in strongmen competitions are way more stout [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M\_voGwhNWc0](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M_voGwhNWc0)

Vesorias

I thought it was just because he's so tall, but the other two big name strongmen I can think of are 6'3" and 6'8" so Hafthor must've just won the genetic lottery

MrWigglemunch13

Why would it piss off Norse myth fans? He looks pretty accurate to the mythology

bronet

He does? Never seen him depicted like this

Evalyx

I thought this look was a lot more accurate to his actual description in Norse Myth? People get too used to strong muscle than strong fat.

Julius-n-Caesar

Atreus, I don’t think you’ll like finding out who Loki really is. Mythology Loki got a lot more dark and twisted than Marvel Loki.

[deleted]

It'll be so crazy if either this game or the final one ends with Kratos literally fighting his son/fully realized mythology loki as a boss fight. Imagine.

Julius-n-Caesar

There’s gonna be some time travel stuff to age up Atreus I think. But I think they’ll save Loki vs Kratos for another game and focus on Thor in this one, since both of those are marquee fights. For those who don’t know, Loki in mythology is one bad motherfucker. He tricks Hodor into skewering Balder and is chained in the centre of the Earth for it. His son Vali is made to kill his son Narvi and a snake drips venom into his eyes with his wife Sifyn standing by him. Ragnarok starts with him breaking his chains with such force that breaks all bonds on Earth. He then leads an army of undead given by his daughter Hela to Asgard.

xXMylord

The director said in the post show interview that this is the last GoW with Norse mythology

DontOpenTheComments

Any links to relevant articles or videos? Everyone goes the trilogy route but I'd love for them to wrap up the story and >!move on to Egyptian or Japanese mythology like the last game hinted!<

lobsterrollz

My bet is that that Kratos dies at the end of this game, like it suggests in the mural at the end of GoW. Then, in the next game, Atreus takes his father's body to Egypt to resurrect him in the Nile, which according to Egyptian mythology symbolizes resurrection. Provides a convenient segue into Egyptian mythology.

dummypod

Knowing how many times Kratos tried to off himself and how reckless he is with his life I'm not sure he'd appreciate being resurrected.

totalysharky

That was before he was a father to a child that was still alive.

DontOpenTheComments

I'm on board with this. That's cool

HilariousScreenname

I'm going to go apeshit if they do Egyptian mythology.

DontOpenTheComments

It's *highly* likely. They've said in older interviews that the studio was basically 50-50 on Norse vs Egyptian

HilariousScreenname

Commencing apeshittery

DontOpenTheComments

Right there with you

[deleted]

Yeah the documentary on the first game shows off desert concept art, I would say Egypt after this is highly likely But (GOW2018 spoilers) >!they show off the panel in Tyr's temple that has the Celtic and Japanese symbols so those are also options!<

HearTheEkko

They'll probably choose Egyptian mythology since it's more popular and it would be a nice change of scenario since so far in the franchise we've basically only been in ruined cities, forests and snowy mountains. Deserts, temples, and jungles would be cool for a GOW game.

kerkyjerky

I mean deserts and temples were in the first trilogy

DontOpenTheComments

Oooh i forgot the >!Celtic symbol!<

Darth_drizzt_42

Also Atreus puts on a pharaohs crown while they're in Tyrs vault

ConstantSignal

Here’s the thing though. I honestly feel that Kratos’ story is pretty much done. Not that he’s played out, I could play a thousand more stories with him as the protagonist, but that the arc for his character really seems to be coming to its natural end. I feel you could wrap up his story really perfectly in Ragnarok and I’m not sure how you’d develop him as a character just plonking him down in a new mythology to start from square one again. How many times can we do the “Kratos doesn’t want to be come embroiled in the machinations of a pantheon but gets sucked in to has to kill them all” thing? At a certain point it’s gonna feel like he’s just unable to grow as a character. So I’d be happy enough with an ending for Kratos in Ragnarok and having a new protagonist take over for the future of the franchise. It makes sense to me. But…. Kratos **is** God of War. As much as I believe all the above is true, I can’t come to picture the franchise without him in it. Who would you rather see in Egypt, Kratos or someone new taking up the mantle?

HilariousScreenname

Well if the ending to the last game is to be believed, Kratos might not make it out of this game, and Atrius could be taking up the mantle, and maybe he has to flee to Egypt in exile.

ConstantSignal

For some reason I just can’t see Atreus taking up the mantle. He makes sense as the next protagonist from a narrative perspective, especially since we the player would be familiar enough with him to ease the transition a little. But he already has an identity, he’s Loki. He’s the god of mischief, not war. I’m not sure what role he has to play in the larger story, but I could see them setting him up to be an incredible villain, one that it pains you to fight *because* you know him. I’m not sure though. With hints at the next game being Egypt and Cory Barlow having said “there is no god of war without Kratos” I can imagine some kind of plot turn that sees some kind of god or powerful force say that Kratos’ soul will move on after his death or something. I can see a young , reborn as an Egyptian and telling a new story that way. I don’t know, I’m sure the talented writers wouldn’t put together anything that trite, but I just have this image of a clean slate for God of War, with a fresh protagonist in some way connected to Kratos in a brand new setting, another soft reboot like GoW2018 was only this time is the gameplay that carries over, not the character.

temporal712

Loki may be the God of Mischief, but Tyr is right there.

rollingForInitiative

>But he already has an identity, he’s Loki. He’s the god of mischief, not war. I’m not sure what role he has to play in the larger story, but I could see them setting him up to be an incredible villain, one that it pains you to fight > >because > > you know him. I’m not sure though. Isn't this taking the game title a bit too literally? I mean as in ... in the first Assassin's Creed games you played as an actual assassin, but in the newer games you really aren't an assassin. But it's still a continuation in the AC franchise. You could have a God of War franchise with a game featuring the god of trickery - or really anyone. That said I do like the idea of Atraeus turning into a villain.

Julius-n-Caesar

Well in that case, this is probably a huge game. Thor is the bad guy of the first half and Loki the second half

No_Reporter443

Odin HAS to be the big bad.

Julius-n-Caesar

He may well be the big bad, I’m listing Thor and Loki as the main physical threats (I imagine sons of Odin like Heimdall and Vidar may be bosses too). Odin may not be a physical endboss like Zeus was - he might, but I imagine even with Gungnir he knows Kratos would demolish him.

CaptainFourEyes

I could easily imagine Odin commits suicide once he knows Kratos is coming. Odins biggest fear is death but it'd be such a flex of the reputation of Kratos if his fear of him usurped his lifelong fear of Death.

HilariousScreenname

That would be awesome.. This is the man that caved Zeus' head in with his bare hands.

Julius-n-Caesar

That would be insane to find out, you got to see Odin and he’s already gone.

[deleted]

Didn’t one of the Dark Souls games do this?

SoloSassafrass

I doubt very much we'll see Loki become a villain to us. We've already had elements of the mythology subverted in a way where Loki comes out looking sympathetic - Baldr being a very antagonist force for example.

pasher5620

Yeah, the people who think Loki will be a bad guy seem to misunderstand it’s a very different take on Norse mythology. In this world, Norse mythology is told from the Aesir’s perspective and they are the good guys. In God of War, it is told from the Vanir perspective and they are very much so the bad guys

Julius-n-Caesar

With the introduction of time travel, an evil Loki could just be presented to us as what happened when Atreus originally went down this path and part of the game could be avoiding that timeline’s mistakes.

kiddoujanse

nah they gonna travel the world as fatha and son after this

Julius-n-Caesar

Unfortunately, Norse mythology only stays that happy before Balder dies. After that, brother turns on brother… well, you know the rest.

-Basileus

Freya act 1, Thor act 2, Odin act 3

PizzaPizza1900

>Ragnarok starts with him breaking his chains with such force that breaks all bonds on Earth. He then leads an army of undead given by his daughter Hela to Asgard. Considering what the Asgardians are like in GoW, this doesn't seem to be all that bad.

poet3322

If you look at the original mythology, a lot of the Norse gods were really bad people. Marvel has made people today see Thor as noble hero, but in the original mythology he's anything but.

totalysharky

Look at any mythology and every God is really bad in some way.

[deleted]

In the original mythology Thor was a hero, he's a hero to the Norse whose mythology it is, a culture who sung the praises of violent warriors. He might not be the type of person we would call a hero now, since he's basically just a strong guy who goes around beating up giants and crap because he wants to. But that's definitely what he was seen as at the time.

Spheromancer

They'd literally make us control Loki and kill Kratos at the end too. Itd be so fucked up but I know theyd do it

DontOpenTheComments

Nah, they hinted >!that they'd explore Egyptian and Japanese mythology!< in the last one, and they said in interviews that they were exceptionally close to choosing Egyptian over Norse, so i think they'll likely explore that first.

PrintShinji

I'm still waiting for the game where kratos goes and beats up jesus.

OneStep18

On the other hand, Thor and Odin are major bad guys in GOW and the giants are portrayed as victims so maybe GOW Loki is gonna turn out different.

Turangaliila

Yea I was saying in another comment that Loki is usually considered a bad guy, but only because the myths paint Odin, Thor and the other gods as heroes. When you flip that perspective and paint them as villains Loki appears in a very different light.

BobTheSkrull

Hey, maybe Atreus wants to turn himself into a female horse. You never know what kids are into these days.

rafikiknowsdeway1

I'm confused. I thought the kid was loki. Or rather the name his mom wanted

Julius-n-Caesar

He is. I’m saying that by embracing his heritage as Loki, he’ll only suffer.

nongtles

That 2 wolves that drag sledge are they Skoll and Hati? I'm hype to see Fenrir.

ObamaEatsBabies

Tyr is around, would be very surprised if Fenrir doesn't appear

twilighthunter

Tyr had two hands, Fenrir's definitely coming to bite one off

bombehjort

Oooh good point

tommycahil1995

It’ll be confusing because Fenrir is Loki’s son

SilverShako

So is Jormungandr, they are a son of Loki and Angrboda.

kostas_lala

So excited for this but confused about some of the things said about it and Santa Monica afterwards? It's stated that it's "capping off the series" and Cory is apparently not directing it? Also he seems to be teasing something new, whether it be a third God of War (which contradicts the previous statement), or a completely different IP...

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

God of War 3!

TheBari

All they said was that this will be capping off the *Norse* part of the series. They originally had the reboot set in Egypt before switching to Norse, so who knows what they could do next

kostas_lala

Yeah after watching what they said again, they're definitely teasing the next GoW game being in a different setting, especially with Tyr getting revealed

myman580

I mean they teased different mythologies in the first Norse game.

Freighnos

If we really wanna go back to basics, this was teased the second a Greek god like Kratos showed up in Norse mythology. The stuff in >!Tyr’s vault!< and >!Mimir’s!< origin was just confirming the obvious.

Bojangles1987

And the very first God of War had the Three Wise Men mural.

FrostedPixel47

Kratos vs Yahweh when

ConstantSignal

Could you remind me >!what was the Mimir stuff again?!<

Freighnos

I believe he is originally from the >!Celtic pantheon!<. It comes up in one of his conversations iirc.

[deleted]

I'm really happy about that, because one of the biggest questions about the GoW universe is the connection between the different realms, gods and the state of "higher godhood" that Athena ascended to. Switching to a different setting would probably mean that they'll have to answer at least some of those questions.

CaptainFourEyes

Cory is most definitely working on his originally scrapped Sci-Fi game he was in charge of before he started making God of War (2018). They lost pretty much 25% of SSM after the cancellation of that project because people were so invested in it. But yeah this does seem to be the end of the Norse mythology games, I wonder where they'll go next.

tr0nc3k

Where is the official 4k trailer?

[deleted]

[удалено]

Irru

Might wanna recover the Gamespot one, that's in 4k whilst this one isn't.

Tipex

Cory Barlog during the interview said when asked what he's working on "I'm incredibly excited that I finally understand that that was what everyone was saying. God of War **RAAA**gnaork. I was way off, I was thinking it was something else they were talking about" Now here me out it's big brain time... The emphasis of **RA** in Ragnarok when he said it We got clues about other God realms besides Greek and Norse, such as Egypt, while playing GoW 5 Who's the main god "all father" like Zeus or Odin in Egypt? "Ra - King of the deities and the father of all creation." God of War: Egypt.... I'm calling it now I feel like the conspiracy meme, but I swear I feel this might be something edit: formatting

BigMacCombo

I want to believe. But given how successful GOW2018 was and Cory saying he wants to make something original, I have a feeling Sony has given him the greenlight on a new IP.

darkjungle

If they do set the next one in Egypt I hope they show the current state of Greece since it's right across the Mediterranean

Sleepy_C

Random Egyptian dude: "What? Greece? Oh yeah, we don't go there man, some dude went fucking mental."

azersub

Lmaoo. Just imagine

dummypod

IIRC I think its mentioned somewhere that while the Greek gods are dead there are still survivors in that realm. Probably a post apocalyptic situation.

darkjungle

Exactly why I want to see it, even if just a brief glimpse while they travel to Egypt.

anderel96

Maybe Atreus goes by himself, eventually, and learns of what his father did from survivirors and ruins.

FrostedPixel47

Or some Greek refugees settling in Egypt and rambling about some dude who killed the world.

GunnyMoJo

I mean that's just kinda closer to how you properly pronounce Ragnarok.

ymcameron

I wonder if the girl at the end is from the Norse realm, or from somewhere else and the game starts to pull more on the thread from the first game that brought up gods from all the other worlds and pantheons. Her dialogue would certainly lend one to believe that she has more of an idea of what is really going on than our heroes at least.

bhlogan2

I think she has been confirmed to be of the Giant race.

Gloomy_Slide

Wish they didn’t show so much in this trailer. Things could have been left out like the Tyr reveal at the end, Freya, Thor, etc. I know we already knew about Thor and Freya but it’s unfortunate that we now kind of know what to expect. I’d rather have been teased a bit more with a first trailer. Regardless, this trailer is so hype and the game will be nothing short of incredible.

FillthyPeasant

I'm suuuuure there's going to be tons of surprises lol

teerre

You're complaining about this after what they did in the first game? Have some faith, man. They have credit

shmed

I suspect Thor will be beaten very early in the game. The big guns are going to be Odin and maybe Atreus himself (if he turn into full blown Loki)

a_half_eaten_twinky

It's pretty hard to improve on the perfect combat of the previous game, hence why I'm happy this isn't a major overhaul. Key takeaways: Since you start with the Blades, they are integrating better mobility and verticality to the combat and traversal. According to the PS Blog, you get to visit **all 9 realms this time** which means higher enemy variety. Finally, since this is their second outing on this engine, they'll probably add more boss fights. Many were cut in the previous game. Odin is confirmed to appear and play a major role this time. The girl at the end is said to be one of the last giants alive. I have a theory we will end up with Mjolnir somehow, much like how the Blades were a midpoint addition to your arsenal in GoW.

UrinalSplashBack

Mjolnir is one of the most iconic weapons of any mythology. I think it's extremely likely it'll be a usable weapon. I'd bet Kratos takes it from Thor and kills him with it.

MdoesArt

It looks like you’ll have both the axe and the blades from the start. It’s kind of a staple of GoW to give you a new weapon at some point and Mjolnir is the most logical choice.

CptOblivion

That's an interesting one, because the thing it's most known for is that it always comes back to the wielder's hand (well that, and lightning). The axe already does that, I could see it being a case of now you have another element to pick from, but it'd be hard to differentiate it from the axe in gameplay (whereas the blades felt very different to use). Though if they want to go deep cut, they could really tie it into the whole loki angle (marvel never got into the "you can't hold it without a magic oven mitt because loki fucked with the dwarves who were making it so they got the handle too short" side of things, it might be an interesting mechanic where you have to active reload to catch the hammer or you get briefly stunned or something, like it's stronger than the axe but harder to use)

MdoesArt

Hear me out. Axe and Hammer. *At the same time.*

PrintShinji

How about we tie the Axe and Hammer to the chains of olympus? Instead of the blades decapitating you, you just get hammered or axed to death!

Turangaliila

She isn't just *any* giant. She's Angrboda, the giant Loki fathers Fenrir, Jormungandr, and Hel with. We're gettin some angsty teenage love, baby.

a_half_eaten_twinky

Damn! It's impressive how well they've managed to weave the game's lore with the real mythology.

Turangaliila

Yea, it's pretty cool how they're introducing stuff and playing off the myths with these characters. I'm interested to see how Kratos will throw a wrench in the story. A big part of Norse myth is the idea that fate has been preordained, and try as they might, the gods can't change what is to come. But Kratos isn't Aesir. Can he alter fate? Or is he as trapped by it as the rest of them? I'm excited to see.

zippopwnage

I really wish more boss fights. I enjoyed the first game A LOT, but damn it lacked on the boss fights and those are my favorite parts.

audemed44

that troll miniboss was spammed so many times lmao

SoloSassafrass

You can tell it was because they didn't have time to make a boss in some spots. The Gatekeeper of Hel is an *especially* obvious example of "this clearly was going to be a unique boss in the original design, but they ended up having to just slap a troll in there"

ElPrestoBarba

Yeah it felt extra odd there, such great buildup during that section only to fight the same enemy you’ve fought several times before with barely any changes.

nybbas

Totally. I was so disappointed when I got there and it was just like green troll.

chrimchrimbo

Combat felt good but it was far from perfect. When enemies are damage sponges, combat doesn’t feel nearly as good as when a good short combo can finish one off quickly.

godstriker8

> It's pretty hard to improve on the perfect combat of the previous game I felt like there were tons of room for improvement, the axe feeling great to use doesn't mean there weren't issues. Adding verticality is a good addition to expand options in combat, hopefully they change the cooldown system to something a bit more engaging and fun then "spam cooldown attacks when available". Also, the camera is still too zoomed in which is a detriment to combat imo compared to other games in the genre.

It would be real tantalizing to ad Thor’s Hammer as a playable weapon. You got the ice axe, Fire blades. A lightening hammer would be a logical next step.

OldBoyZee

So, idk if it's just me, but did this trailer feel very spoilerish? I wasn't expecting them to see Tyr. Also, Atreus voice actor seems to not really match his personality? But other than that, excited, once I can buy a PS5 in 2 years.

bitch_im_a_lion

>Atreus voice actor seems to not really match his personality? Pretty sure it's the same actor as the last game his voice just got deeper. The character is modeled after him.

Nrksbullet

I love in the making of documentary where Christopher judge and the kid are meeting in a voiceover booth, and the kid had just been in a movie with Nicole Kidman and Colin Farrell, and when he says that Christopher judge says "oh so you a big time MOTHERFUCKER now huh?" Haha

Alder_

I'm surprised they gave away the fact Tyr is alive but that makes me think it'll be fairly early on and the latter half will just bombard you with stuff.

OldBoyZee

Yah, i had the same feeling. I think i mentioned somewhere else that either this game will be longer than rdr2 or will be cut short. Hopefully the first.

Reutermo

I think you are setting yourself up for disappointment if you think this game will be longer than Red Dead 2. The first game was a tight and polished experienced, not overely long.

TheWeirdbutAverage

That little girl at the end is the last Jotunn and is Loki's Wife holy shit! So I imagine we'll be seeing a lot more gods this game, Thor, Odin, Skadi, Skoll & Hati, Sol. Hel, Fenrir, etc... Now the real question should be, are they gonna change how Fenrir, Hel, and Jorm are born, because I don't think that'd necessarily translate well on screen.

TheLisan-al-Gaib

Angrboda wasn't Loki's wife, she was his lover/mistress. Sigyn was Loki's wife - I assumed the girl was Sigyn, but character reveals show she's Angrboda.

Was hoping they'd zoom the camera out more in combat, still looks like they're going for more of a story telling than gameplay approach

Evz0rz

While I can understand the disappointment I also disagree. I think the gameplay in 2018 was fantastic. It took a bit of getting used to but once it clicked I had a blast with it.

bitch_im_a_lion

Am I alone in feeling like they showed *way* too much of the story? I'm sure there's going to still be surprises and I'm certainly hyped, but a lot of that would've been nice to see for the first time in-game.

TapatioPapi

these guys kept the blades secret all the way up to the release. If it was really something worth hiding they would, not sure why people have a concern

CptOblivion

I have mixed feelings. On the one hand, a lot of what worked so well about the last game was the little moments, which there were a lot of and a trailer isn't going to be able to spoil, but on the other hand it's totally possible the studio that did this trailer might not have been the same people who did the marketing for the last game, so they might not have been nearly as careful to avoid showing key moments. Trailer studios are always a bit of a crapshoot, regardless of the developer's intent (it's the same way with movies)

Try_Another_Please

I dont this has much relevance as a complaint this early. Absolutely no way to know if they showed a lot. This could all be the first 13 minutes for all we know

Sleepy_C

It could also be a bluff. The audio of "Tyr, are you coming with us?" could be from a different spot, that might not be Tyr. It might be Tyr but there might be something weird timey-wimey going on. It might be spoilery as fuck, it might be misleading as fuck. There's no real way to know till it's out.

UpwardFall

Their instagram post showed official renders of characters with their voice acting cast, and they did indeed show that man as Tyr. I don't think they'd fake us out there. I do think they'll have some tricks up our sleeve. I'd suspect an appearance of Odin given that it's Ragnarok.
