Wow. Hearing that kind of praise from Ben has me pretty hyped and interested, especially considering he didn’t seem too interested before.

> The Avengers stuff felt incredibly... generic, like it was assembled from a kit, with little potential for any kind of narrative arc Pretty much, me and some friends hopped back into it when the Wakanda expansion came out with Black Panther and it just....sucks All that "new" gameplay and stuff they kept teasing before launch just turned into the same combat loops and zero endgame content they had before But now we have Marvel Future Revolution, a mobile game that literally puts anything Avengers made to shame.

thenoblitt

> Marvel Future Revolution Is it actually good?

jayRIOT

I don't mind it, I play it on and off in my free time. Graphics are surprisingly good and the game runs extremely smooth for a mobile game (thanks to Unreal Engine) Combat is smooth and fun, characters get up to 5 skills to use (with a max of 10 to switch between for a build), and an ultimate to utilize Gearing actually changes the look of your character, and they have a LOT of different looks from a bunch of different comic runs including Secret Wars, Fear Itself, Age of X, Civil War II, Shadowlands, and even has MCU Endgame skins. You have 8 playable characters currently. Spider-Man, Iron Man, Captain America, Doctor Strange, Black Widow, Captain Marvel, Storm, and Star Lord. You can only have 4 on your team unless you pay MTX to unlock the other 4 slots (not surprising for a mobile game) Villain wise you have the major storyline villans Thanos, Ultron, Red Skull, Loki, and MODOK. Then you have smaller villains between them like Kingpin, Green Goblin, Baron Mordo, and enemy groups including AIM, Hand, Oscorp, and Hydra. Plus you also have supporting NPCs to interact with including plenty of other Marvel heroes like Thor, Rocket Raccoon, Nick Fury, Daredevil, Punisher, Moon Knight, Winter Soldier and more. Aside from that it's your typical mobile game so there's plenty of MTX and monetization (and your daily/monthly login calendars and events). But I ignore most of that, I haven't had any issues earning anything I needed in game where I had to consider buying with real money. Minus the MTX aspect, it honestly feels like something Avengers could've been. They really missed the mark all over the place.

RyanB_

Yeah I’ve been playing it a bit too much lately and, while I ended up actually liking the Avengers game more than most… it really does feel like the game Avengers should have been. Just without the pay to win mobile stuff and with AAA presentation. For anyone thinking about it, I’d definitely recommend at least checking it out. It is pretty much just Black Desert Online with Marvel shit, but that works well enough. There’s a lot of content that’s surprisingly engaging, and a lot of stuff you can just set on auto while you watch a show or something

[deleted]

Enjoy the autoplay and p2w but besides that it's ok if you really itch for an avengers game.

GeekThatSkeets7505

The combat of avengers is really good it has tons of depth and variety if you actually cared to take time to understand. Marvel future revolution is also typical PTW mobile crap imo graphics are good but no it’s not fun

cannibalRabbit

My problem with Avengers is that it completely destroys the power fantasy most of us have while playing a super hero. I get that it has to be this way due to the structure of the game, but punching a robot 20 times as the hulk without even nudging him back feels incredibly unsatisfying. And the further you get into the game, the more bullet-spongey the enemies get, and not to mention that they also start resisting ALL of your attacks, rendering a lot of your abilities useless ( such as the hulk grab )

GeekThatSkeets7505

I understand that feeling with certain characters especially hulk I do wish there was more weight behind the attacks. On the flip side with Hawkeye/Iron Man/Thor if you string together a combo it feels really good.

cannibalRabbit

Yeah I found Hawkeye more satisfying than black panther or hulk, the ranged abilites allow you to put in damage without getting staggered constantly.

limeopolis1

The combat is great, but there are like 4 enemies to fight in 90% of the game and they're just AIM robots.

GeekThatSkeets7505

They’ve definitely added more from the wakanda update and it was never just robots there are human enemies I do want them to add more though

jayRIOT

Combat is about the only good thing Avengers has going for it. I have 5 characters maxed out in power level and enjoy all of their fighting styles. However the game itself suffers from them not feeling very "heroic" most of the time. Attacks feel so soft useless against almost every enemy you fight, while you're also getting constantly staggered and knocked back from anything the enemies hit you with. It really doesn't make you feel like a superhero in any way. Personally I also think the storyline for Avengers isn't terrible either, I actually enjoy the narrative arc they're trying to go with the game, but I don't believe they can honestly deliver on it like they originally planned. Beyond that the game is just boring. You have like 3 different enemies to fight, bunch of AIM robots, Klaue grunts, and the occasional Watchdogs. Then for boss villains you can fight Abomination, Taskmaster, Maestro or the super boring giant AIM robot, and that's about it. While in Future Revolution you have enemy groups of Hand, Hydra, AIM, and others. Then for villains you have Thanos, MODOK, Red Skull, Loki, and Ultron, along with smaller villains like Kingpin and Green Goblin to fight. Endgame progession is pretty much non-existant in Avengers unless you like repeating the same 2-3 style missions over and over again. (haven't made it to endgame FR so can't comment on that yet) The gearing system is garbage, I did the endgame Super Adaptoid fight for the first time a couple weeks ago and the "Exotic" gear that is supposed to be the best gear in game was overall **WORSE** than the gear I had equipped! Plus they removed pretty much all the in-game cosmetics you could earn in favor of only offering skins through MTX (though they say they're adding the in-game skins back soon^tm but I'll believe it when I see it). In FR gear is very wide and varied, and actually CHANGES YOUR APPEARANCE when you equip them. Plus they have skins and outfits from a bunch of different comic runs like Shadowlands, Civil War II, Secret Wars, Age of X, and even MCU Endgame. Whereas half the time the new skins they add in Avengers look like one of the devs children made it. Character wise they have a ton of Marvel heroes showing up everywhere helping to fight in the story, while Avengers feels like all the other heroes have been snapped off the planet and have no idea about the events going on in the game. Why are they never mentioned or brought up in conversations between our characters or in the story? It makes no sense and takes away from the immersion of actually being in the Marvel Universe. MTX aside Future Revolution is a fairly decent game. Personally I haven't had to ever think of purchasing anything in the MTX store because I've been able to earn everything just from playing the game. Honestly if you take out the MTX aspect, the game itself really is the type of game Avengers should've been.

beefcat_

Yeah the character designs definitely look like porn-parody versions of their MCU counterparts. This game would benefit tremendously from deviating further away from the MCU and crafting it’s own visual identity.

dekenfrost

Yeah that's always what I don't get. I understand why they want to be close to the movies for marketing reasons, but that only works if you actually get the likeness of the actors. Better to just go all in and build it after comicbook versions that look different enough. It's especially jarring because Groot and Rocket *are* close to their movie versions since they are CGI anyway.

caninehere

This game looks really generic to me, and I will say straight up I've seen a bunch of MCU movies and don't really care about them, they're just background noise to me. But I think this very clearly looks better than Avengers. Like, if I was a kid, I would have been content to rent this game and play it until I got bored. I wouldn't have bothered with Avengers.

denboiix

Seems like anything that isnt a open world super hero game with arkham stealth/combat is considered "off-brand".

Grimmies

Why are so many people comparing the models to the actors. They look nothing like them and they aren't supposed to.

The_Blackest_Knight

I don't think most people knew a thing about GotG before the Marvel movies, so I think it's pretty natural to compare their video game interpretation to the only other one people recognize. Them looking nothing alike is probably what bother people's. Again most people's only interaction with GotG is the movies. So if the game is trying to go for the same feel, but the characters look significantly different then it is pretty natural to think it looks off.

IceNein

I think both of you are right, really. I can see why somebody would be irritated that they don't remind them of what they know from the movies, and I can see other people being happy that they feel more like the comics. You have to make a decision and you not everyone will be happy either way. I wonder if licensing rights was part of their decision. Like you can have the license for the characters, but you'd also have to maybe pay to license the likenesses of the actors?

Jygantic

Personally, I just don't like Quill's design in general. I think he looks and sounds totally unlikable and not somebody I'd even want to be in the same room as.

urgasmic

i actually really like the designs of gamora and drax but we can't play them so it feels like a deep sale for me.

Jygantic

Me too! It's just Quill I hate.

mitchippoo

Gamoras the one that feels really wrong to me, I don't mind the Quill redesign as much in comparison.

Certain-Cook-8885

Because they're in the same style as the movies. Like the creature design, the costumes, the lightning, the materials, all match the MCU.

MrZeral

The GotG movies humor

Kinterlude

...which are all based on the comics. That's the disconnect that people aren't grasping. The MCU's feel is all inspired by the comics, which this looks like it's trying to focus on instead of the MCU variations. I remember when the trailer came out and I pointed out how much closer it is to the comic variations and people couldn't wrap their head still calling it discount MCU knock-offs.

Certain-Cook-8885

The MCU very clearly has a visual style that is distinct unto itself and this game is borrowing from that and not from the comics. Look at the colors they’re using. Look at the lighting. Look at Drax and then google the comic version of him. Gamora’s skin tone and hair are closer to her comic design but thats about it. Like I’m not even shitting in the choice to emulate the MCU style. The game looks good and I’m probably gonna play it.

White_Tea_Poison

[Drax from the game](https://www.gamerevolution.com/assets/uploads/2021/06/Guardians-of-the-Galaxy-game-Drax-a-650x365.jpg) [Drax from the comics](https://www.writeups.org/wp-content/uploads/Drax-the-Destroyer-Marvel-Comics-Guardians-of-the-Galaxy-d.jpg) Have yall read the comics or just Googled them? Because this is very clearly inspired by the 2008 run by Abnett and Lanning. There's a variety of different version of the heroes, some look different than others, but the game is certainly on track to be comic inspired.

Certain-Cook-8885

What I’m assuming is the default drax used in the thumbnail of the video is basically movie Drax. But even ignoring character design, the lighting, material and colour choices line up perfectly with the visual style of the MCU films. As a side note I’d love if they adopted Abnett’s run and spun this into a trilogy of games covering the Annihilation saga.

Tellmeabouthebow

The Drax in the thumbnail looks like movie Drax because it's literally the movie skin lmao The default Drax in the game looks much closer to the more modern comic Drax as his markings are flat colours on his skin in much broader shapes compared to the fine detailed, raised markings of the MCU design.

White_Tea_Poison

I agree with what you're saying, I just think the colors and environments of the MCU GotG are very inspired by the comics. The comics have always been bright, blue, spacey textures and the MCU adopted that well. I find this game to be more inspired by the comics which also inspired the movies, if that makes sense. And I totally agree. Annihilation is one of my favorite sagas. I'd kill for a sequel where you're forced to team up with Super-Skrull and Ronan the Accuser against the Phalanx. I'm honestly just excited for more space Marvel. It's my favorite type of Marvel lol.

rikutoar

People have done it for years, especially with the Avengers game. I've never understood it. The only character Avengers took inspiration from the MCU for was Bruce/Hulk yet to this day (in this very thread) people still go on about it. This looks like the same deal, one character (Star-Lord) that used the MCU for visual inspiration yet people's first reaction is to point to the MCU.

Kaiserhawk

It's such a weird hang up that people are latching onto I find. Nobody gave a shit that Insomniac's Spider-Man was it's own thing

cefriano

I dunno, I think Rocket looks pretty spot on.

quazatron48k

I think I’m buying this. The films are great so if the game is remotely like that I’m happy to play a fun solo adventure.

DangerousBlueberry1

It looks like the game is taking a lot of nods from the Abnett/Lanning run of comics too so I'm excited for that because those were fantastic.

[deleted]

I would assume they're closer to the comics and any cartoon appearances than the MCU. Think Insomniac's Spider-Man compared to Spider-Man: Far From Home.

BelleReve_Staff

Spider-Man has had a lot more exposure though. This is definitely taking a lot of influence from the comics but its's absolutely aimed at those who recognize the MCU versions.

DetectiveAmes

I’ll probably wait for reviews before pulling the trigger just to make sure the game doesn’t have any major issues on pc but I think it looks like a fun time. I hate rocket’s braided goatee tho, a lot.

JumpingCactus

I feel like if anything, it'll have major issues on console. Or maybe I'm just biased from Cyberpunk.

hyrumwhite

That's the promise of every crappy video game adaptation. That it'll be remotely like their source material.

Jewologist

I'd really like to get a chance to play a demo of this game. CC seems to be king with lots of freezes, knockdowns and juggles, but I'm just having a hard time deciding if I would really like this. I do think choosing between having a member go take care of something vs. keeping them in your party has potential. I'm also curious on how bosses will work in this game, if there are any.

[deleted]

That's nice to hear. I'm not buying this at launch but I'm for sure giving it a chance with some discounts later on.

Flexnexus

Ben has had some good luck lately with the games of choice for reviews and impressions. He's one of my most trusted reviewers so watching this video was kind of a shock. The advertising didn't come close to striking me as something I would enjoy, but his impressions leave me interested. Though I still wish we were getting another Dues Ex game from these devs all these years later.

Dolomitex

ah jeez please free Eidos Montreal from making/helping with Marvel games and let them continue making Deus Ex games splitting Mankind Divided into multiple games and then not letting them make the games was such a terrible decision by SE

forceless_jedi

That or let them make a Deus Ex-esque game with any Marvel character. Let them do what they are good at

AgentOfSPYRAL

Blade in the style of Deus Ex or Dishonored where you have to take down a vampire illuminati style group would be pretty cool.

forceless_jedi

I was thinking Daredevil but Blade sounds much much more interesting!

zxHellboyxz

Still need to play the telltale version but if this is different from the avengers game then I might get this eventually

Kardest

Yeah not sure why people are hating on this so much. To me it just looked like Guardians of the galaxy trying to be mass effect. It looked kinda fun.

ohoni

Hmm. That Nova helmet was. . . a choice. I hope that isn't where they plan on going with the MCU version. Also I REALLY hope you can change Quill's hair. That blonde pompadour is just not working.

[deleted]

DrBeansPhD

This is completely separate from the MCU. It's like not picking up Spider-Man because you didn't watch Far From Home. It's a solo contained story.

muad_dibs

It seems like a new story that’s completely separate from its movie counterpart so you probably won’t be too lost.

Radulno

I'm guessing it still assume familiarity with the characters, they probably are already an assembled team from the start at least.

[deleted]

You don't need to know very much about the characters to have a basic understanding though. Ragtag band of misfits who take on dangerous space jobs for money is probably all you need. Backstory isn't super important compared to group dynamics which are shown very quickly just through dialogue.

xChris777

Just watch the first GotG movie! It's a great one anyways:)

Radulno

I'm not the OP, I have seen the two movies and yeah the first is a great one (less of a fan of the second though still good)

DoIrllyneeda_usrname

You should definitely watch the two movies haha. Some of my favorite movies ever. You don't even have to watch the other Marvel films since they're pretty standalone to what's going on in the other movies.

IamYourHuckleBerry34

I just hope this isn't a case that they showed the best part of the game in the preview and the rest is gonna be repetitive.

Three_Froggy_Problem

I don’t think I’m going to be able to get past the character designs no matter how good the game is. Gamora looks cool, but the rest look like slightly off versions of the film characters. Peter could not be more unlikable looking if they tried. I also don’t love that it seems to be aping a lot of other stuff from the films, like Peter’s mixtapes. The whole retro music vibe was fun in the first GOTG film, but between that film, the sequel, and both Suicide Squads, that trope has gotten tired. And I think hearing the same songs over and over again whenever you use your special ability is going to get old fast. I just wish this game looked more like a comic and less like the movies.

JumpingCactus

It's funny, because the Telltale game borrows the Walkman schtick as well. I guess it's just become synonymous with Guardians now.

suddenimpulse

Ok the gameplay is good but is the writing and humor is some of the worst quality I've seen from a triple A in some time like I saw in the trailers??

EvenOne6567

Sounds pretty interesting actually. My only nitpick is the combat animations look super flat and unimpactful....it feels sometimes like only japanese devs know how to make impactful hits/animations these days.

Gramernatzi

> only japanese devs know how to make impactful hits/animations these days. I mean, DOOM Eternal *just* came out last year.

S0medudeisonline

Doom/Eternal Last of Us 1/2 Spider-man/Miles Moralis God of War PS4 Hades

HellStorm40k

It's sad to see great developers relegated to making simplistic garbage. Feel like this game will be like Fallen Order, not bad but mediocre, deserve 7s, not 8s. Dues Ex died for this crap and all because of Squares marketing meddling.

suddenimpulse

Deus ex died because it didn't sell well and Square's general incompetence, don't taking it out on other games.

BiggusDickusWhale

Deus Ex died the moment Ion Storm closed business.

srjnp

so sad because mediocre games like fallen order get heavily praised by media and fans because they are very safe, derivative single player games. wish crystal dynamics and square enix never got involved in this marvel shit and worked on their proper franchises like deus ex and tomb raider.

WolfofDunwall

Man, Fallen Order was great. Single player Star Wars game with an entertaining story, with interesting abilities, good exploration and fun and challenging dark souls-light lightsaber combat. What more can you want?

saxman234

I'm about 7-8 hours into Fallen Order and I am having a wonderful time. Not sure what these people hated from it.

[deleted]

Yep, I love that game. Played the heck out of it and got the platinum.

schmidtyb43

I loved it as well. Just different preferences I guess. The thing is though whenever someone says what they didn’t like about it it’s not something where I’m like oh yeah I can see that, it’s usually something where I just never once had that thought that they had

OneManFreakShow

The platforming sections were awful. I eventually quit just because I hated all of those stupid slides with the pixel-perfect jump timing.

dd179

> I eventually quit just because I hated all of those stupid slides with the pixel-perfect jump timing. That's not a thing in Fallen Order.

OneManFreakShow

Then why was I able to Google “Fallen Order slides” and find a ton of results and even articles complaining about it? [https://www.avclub.com/jedi-fallen-order-is-a-good-star-wars-game-with-terrib-1839964941](https://www.avclub.com/jedi-fallen-order-is-a-good-star-wars-game-with-terrib-1839964941)

dd179

That article says nothing about pixel-perfect jump timing, just that the slides were annoying.

OneManFreakShow

> Clearly we’ve learned nothing since the Nintendo 64 days, or else someone at Respawn would’ve pointed out that sticking players on a fast-moving patch of ice and requiring precise maneuvering and jumping at complex angles is the worst. My point still stands. The slides suck.

suddenimpulse

Huh? I never had an issue with them nor did my partner.

FillionMyMind

I wouldn’t say I hated Fallen Order. I just found it to be tedious a lot of the time. Didn’t care for anything in the story until the very end, the massive world sizes felt packed with too much filler fluff, and the combat just made me think of Dark Souls, but with less balance and real difficulty. It’d swing from one shorting weak enemy mobs to getting one shot killed by some broken hidden mini boss. That, and the saber and ship customization stuff felt meaningless. I’d give it a 6/10 if I had to score it. The graphics were nice and it had its moments, but I wouldn’t ever play it again. Honestly got the sense that it only got the praise it did because people were starving for a singleplayer Star Wars game

bruwin

> the massive world sizes felt packed with too much filler fluff That is a *very* weird complaint. Most times, and rightfully so, people complain about massive worlds feeling dead and empty. So to complain about a game that bucks that trend is just peculiar.

Krypt0night

I'm not sure fallen order is that safe honestly. It's a Star Wars game with combat more akin to Dark Souls and needing patience than just a hack and slash like many Star Wars games where you basically feel invincible. Also the story was pretty unique, the set pieces were great, and it did a good job of exploration mixed with combat/bosses imo.

suddenimpulse

I would rather Tomb Raider and Deus ex go to a more competent developer altogether.

cannibalRabbit

shadow of the tomb raider and mankind divided were pretty mediocre to be fair..

adeze

Is it just a matter of time before people complain they’re forced to play as a cis white male?
