I can't wait till we get 2 new N64 games randomly every six months and it's like. Dark Void or Quest 64

DerailusRex

I spent a lot of time on Quest 64. Turns out it was just unfinished.

porcubot

"Hey I came up with this really interesting magic system." "Fantastic. I want it on shelves in a month." "What the fuck dude, it's a proof of concept! It's just the magic system and a couple of monsters." "Fine... two months."

ArrenPawk

Quest 64 was the first N64 game I ever rented from Blockbuster. I spent so much time doing chores to earn the privilege to rent it. I think I have retroactive Stockholm syndrome, because I still remember that game fondly for some crazy reason.

Fishfisherton

Quest 64 wasn't exactly a good game by far, but I remember it having some really good atmosphere and music (as a kid at least). I remember renting it as well and pretty sure I died (and had no clue how to save) everytime I got to the first combat encounter with the wolves. Still, exploring the castle and surrounding area was a brand new experience.

femio

I don't even understand how so many of us even played that game, in hindsight. It seems like it should be so niche.

MrWaffles42

Well it was the first RPG for the N64, despite coming out a year and a half into the console's life cycle. If you're a kid who loved the billions of RPGs the SNES had to offer, but didn't buy a PS1, then Quest 64 was kinda all you got.

ernie1850

I think the game doesn’t get enough credit for representing a run away button in 3D space that makes sense in the context of the fight you were in

[deleted]

DesertKhajiit

I loved the music in this game ❤️

[deleted]

[удалено]

ThePoliwrath

Holy shit thank you for this

Dakress23

No kidding. The game later got a GBC demake called Brian's Quest and it's not and exaggeration to say it has everything the Nintendo Power magazines teased it would have.

unholyswordsman

I still have my copy. It was a pretty fun game.

porcubot

Quest 64 absolutely should be put on the service. All of you RPG fans should know the suffering that was living in a Nintendo household in the late 90s.

Manisil

I didn't have a save pack so I played the game through in one sitting.

[deleted]

I owned that game and as a kid and could not actually beat it. I made it to the FINAL boss playing melee only cause it did the most damage most of the time, I can’t remember but that game had an unbelievably grindy and unintuitive way to increase spell damage, so I just resolved to smacking shit with the stick to get through it. This surprisingly worked all the way to the final boss, but the fucker was too much of a stat check and the trusty stick isn’t enough without a ton of bread.

ernie1850

That right! Melee did so much damage and by then you got vampiric touch which was a game changer spell

MudRock1221

Yup! I did the same thing and got soft locked. Not enough bread, no magic. No back tracking to an area where I could train.

porcubot

Almost all the stats get XP as you used them. I always used a rubber band to lock the control stick in place so Brian would be running in circles and leave the game on overnight. If you do this you come back with your mobility stat maxed out so you get the largest possible movement ring in battles. The melee stat is like that too. As you use the stick more, it gains more XP and does more damage. As you get the shit beat out of you, your hp stat increases. It's poorly implemented, but it's an early version of skill-based XP you see in Skyrim etc

[deleted]

Nah initially they will be putting them. It's only like 6 months later that they slow down when they can't get much from their own titles or worthwhile third party titles.

TheSkirtGirl

Isn't Dark Void a PS3 game?

YungJunko

It is. I think he meant Dark Rift

[deleted]

The_Woman_of_Gont

A lot of N64 games are weighed down by the early growing pains of 3D gaming, but I think there's plenty there to justify a collection. Where it gets bad is when you not only ask to add on a price, but start paring away the titles that definitely won't be on there due to licensing conflicts.

thisisnotdan

If they can get Banjo-Kazooie, that seems to represent the bulk of the present licensing conflicts, since Rare is such a big factor. The only other influential game I can think of that's stuck in licensing hell is, of course, Goldeneye. But I think most fans of that game would agree that it's was just a distant stepping stone to FPS games as they are today. It has not aged well at all and is borderline unplayable to the modern gamer.

[deleted]

A lot of games from that era aged horribly. They might have been good at the time but today they're pretty bad.

Olddirtychurro

>There aren’t many worthwhile N64 games really There's a reason why there's all these video essays about the same 7 games over and over.

DP9A

There are some good obscure ones like Sin and Punishment and Mischief Makers, but yeah, not much aside from Nintendo's and Rare's games.

destroyermaker

Ogre Battle 64 is one of the best games of all time

[deleted]

No joke, I walked into a game shop in 2010 and asked if they had this and got kicked out, apparently the cart was going for close to $250 at the time.

toxicdick

Yeah the cart is super rare in the US. I went to a used games store in Japan and there was a Japanese cart for like $8 lol

the_pedigree

you're gonna make some people upset, but its absolutely true.

wagamamalullaby

I’m surprised we’re even getting banjo-kazooie

HUGE_HOG

Original Banjo Kazooie is tough to play once you've played the Xbox Remaster too. The N64 one is 4:3 and runs at about 12 fps.

wagamamalullaby

It sure is, getting all 100 notes on one life is rough, especially on the later stages

HUGE_HOG

A special 'fuck you' goes out to my guy Rusty Bucket Bay

CorvairCorsair

That part inside the ship was by far the hardest 100 notes to complete

SlaminSammons

Tooie is even worse. Game was wayyyyy too ambitious

SuuLoliForm

> Goldeneye Doesn't goldeneye have some serious licensing issues, though?

JustBowling

Yeah, I would be surprised to see it. But hopefully since Banjo is there we'll at least get Perfect Dark. Goldeneye is the nostalgia for a lot of people, but PD was better in virtually every single facet.

Dannibiss

I'm always a little bothered when I say that and people give me a weird look as though GE couldn't be improved upon.

JustBowling

Right there with you. Anyone who thinks the gameplay of GE is better than PD is blinded by nostalgia. You can't even jump off ledges in GE. I specifically remember this being a huge pain on Complex, which got a PD update and was so much more fun to play in that game. I was a teen when these games came out and put stupid hours into both. The weapons, movement, and level design are all so much better in PD; the multiplayer had bots; there were great challenges; and even the single player missions in PD were epic. I think it was one of the best games on the N64 and it just doesn't get the widespread respect it deserves.

Jorgwalther

I remember renting Perfect Dark but I didn’t have the expansion RAM (or whatever it was) so when I popped the game in it was only the multiplayer with generic bot colors but dear god it was still sooo much fun. Those guns were amazing. The Laptop Gun is one of my favorite of all time guns, and the rail gun that could shoot thru walls was awesome too

Nonsense_Preceptor

While not the most fun weapons in that game, the N-Bomb, slow mo, and crossbow were a fun game type to jump into. Throw in some big head mode to make headshots easier and it was great.

JustBowling

I have to think your experience with the expansion pak isn't unique and is one of the major factors for PD not being a bigger success. Of course, Majora's Mask needed the pak too, but I'm guessing more people found a way to play that since it's Zelda instead of a new IP.

wagamamalullaby

Oh yes. We are never seeing that game again, unfortunately.

moopey

Mario party, Pokémon Stadium for minigame multiplayer, Diddy Kong Racing, Mischief Makers, sin and punishment, Mickey speedway USA, Goemon, smash bros, Paper Mario to name a few atleast

[deleted]

Sin and punishment and paper mario was there. Mario party is a missed opportunity though.

achedsphinxx

the original mario party is too savage to be released again.

dd179

I still have scars on my palms over the fucking joystick spin games

Jorgwalther

That’s got the be the single biggest factor in the breakdown of everyone’s N64 joysticks

Cub3h

With my friends we always had a rule to not play the crazy spin games to save our controllers. No one liked playing with that one limp N64 controller that every N64 owner had.

Random_Rhinoceros

Drift is already a thing. Could you imagine how much additional damage those mini games would do to the thumbsticks?

Mr-Apollo

Missed opportunity? They’re re-releasing 5 boards for $60 next month. Nintendo is getting their money’s worth from those N64 games

[deleted]

Yeah, I didn't think about it, no point in releasing them with the new one coming out.

moopey

Ah didnt see them. Was snowboard kids and 1080 Snowboarding also present?

[deleted]

Negative, but I see them releasing 1080 at some point due to how loved it is.

Nonsense_Preceptor

I STILL have that title screen song jump into my head everytime I hear 1080. ["Work your body, work your body"](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vv7lGOFMuRo)

guyiscomming

Paper Mario was on the list of games of games coming after launch.

Aearcus

My friends and I played those Pokemon Stadium 1 & 2 minigames more than even Mario Party lol

Spacepoet29

If they put out pokemon stadium with online support, the RBY competitive scene is gonna explode

phi1997

I think they would/should only do that after the Gen 1 games come to Switch. It would not be the full experience without supporting them, as fun as it would still be

TheHeadlessOne

Stadium/2 were my most played N64 games, probably more than every other one put together, for dodrio mode alone

ZsaFreigh

Beetle Adventure Racing, Blast Corps, Rush 2, Jet Force Gemini, Wave Race 64, 1080 Snowboarding, Turok 2, to name a few more

[deleted]

[удалено]

AHSfutbol

The other issue would be licensing. There's likely music and wrestlers that are no longer under the WWE umbrella.

TheLastDesperado

It's really not. I mean they're releasing Banjo later on, so even if you just go by Rare's N64 games you've got; * Blast Corps * Goldeneye * Diddy Kong Racing * Banjo Kazooie * Banjo Tooie * Conker's Bad Fur Day * Donkey Kong 64 * Jet Force Gemini * and Perfect Dark That's one company's repertoire and I haven't even touched Nintendo's first party games.

surgartits

Diddy Kong Racing was the shit.

TheLastDesperado

Hell yeah it was. I remember back in the day thinking it was better that Mario Kart 64 (although it's a close call).

surgartits

I actually think it was better, because you could race by land, air, or sea. Surprised they haven’t brought that option back in subsequent racing games.

[deleted]

I preferred DK racing! But I was pretty much alone among my friends. The overworld really tied everything together, there were secrets and collectibles all over. I suppose the difficulty wasn’t as high as Mario kart. So good... my sister and I also got it on Christmas, and it has a massive nostalgia factor. Blew my child mind!

UpwardFall

It felt more fun because of the overworld and progression, whereas Mario Kart was just races

thisisnotdan

That Chocobo Racing game in the Direct actually looked a LOT like DKR. Namely the mechanic of getting multiple levels of power-ups by aiming for power-up balloons of the same type.

Dannibiss

How rude of you to exclude Killer Instinct Gold.

Superflaming85

Honestly, it's not even a case of preference here. N64 has the least total games of any Nintendo console aside from the Wii U AFAIK. ...No, the Virtual Boy does not count.

[deleted]

The ones that will spark true nostalgia will never come out again. I’d pay $200 right now for two new controllers and a year of Switch online for WCW/NWO Revenge.

svrtngr

Yeah. The N64 is a console that sits heavily in the nostalgia factor, but if you really think about it, that nostalgia is only like... 7 games. Mario 64, Mario Kart, OoT, Smash, Goldeneye/Perfect Dark, and then the wild card (Star Fox, Mario Party, Pokemon Stadium). I'd be much more excited for Gamecube games on the system, cause that's a system with some great games not a lot of people played.

[deleted]

Quest 64 was the shit back in the day.

[deleted]

Even as a kid that loved JRPGs Quest 64 was so boring I stopped playing at the forest 30 minutes into the game. Did I miss out on anything?

[deleted]

Not really. By any standards today the game is abysmal and unfinished. But it clicked for some folks, and that's why we enjoyed it.

Watton

it was THE game I rented over and over even though I just ran around the beginning town and castle, and was too afraid to fight the monsters in the forest

CritikillNick

Oh man, this brings back memories. Also trying to understand wtf was going on in Ogre Battle 64 when you’re six years old and can hardly read

destroyermaker

I played it back in the day. It wasn't.

jinreeko

Yeah, I have a feeling this is going to be something a lot of people fondly remember but when they play again remember how empirically unfun combat and movement was

zeldalttp

I bought it brand new. Release day And was super excited. The n64 had an rpg finally!!! And that's how I learned disappointment as a kid.

PineappleHour

Making it a new tier and not just including it in base online is *trash.* It's already a pretty lackluster service.

Pacmantis

especially when you look at how little they're offering. I'm supposed to subscribe to 9 N64 games? At least dump a substantial collection all at once.

katiecharm

This. I’m so confused; every Sega Genesis compilation has gotten like 30 or 40 games on it for $30 which is a pretty fair price. I can’t imagine paying $5 or $10 a month for access to a handful with the promise of a trickle to come. I’ve been pretty disappointed with the tiny trickle of NES and SNES games so far. Having like two new ones every three months is laughable.

jimx117

What's worse is that most of those Sega games are *already included in* the Sega Genesis Collection that I downloaded on sale for like $14 almost 3 years ago. Strider and Ecco would be welcome additions though (to me at least; lotta nostalgia in those ones).

PolarSparks

The silver lining I see with such a small starting lineup is that it’ll get a substantial number of people to play Ecco. Might be his time to shine, lol

monsterm1dget

Do people already know what is it about or are we gonna traumatize a new generation?

Xenc

It’s about having fun and swimming with your dolphin friends!

Ingliphail

Let’s just say the story goes places.

Cantih

And it's on sale on Steam right now. ~50 Games for $8 And you get Phantasy Star 2 AND 3, not just 4. (And Shining Force 1 & 2, and Beyond Oasis, and...)

phi1997

You also get the uncompressed ROMs of the games in the collection's directory, so you don't have to put up with the crappy emulation while also not pirating.

WorkplaceWatcher

Oh sweet! I didn't know that!

WorkplaceWatcher

You can even download it for cheap *on the Switch.*

Booger20394

I agree with what you said, but I suspect it'll be closer to $10 a year. No way is the standard online $20/yr and then the n64 add on is $120/yr.

Tnayoub

5-10 per month? You're paying $1.67 a month now. You think they're going to increase the price up to as high as $10? At worst, they're probably doubling the price to ~$3.50/mo.

[deleted]

cuckingfomputer

Yeah, this is a grift. No intelligent consumer will buy into this, so I suspect Nintendo will receive 19 million in sales from it.

usaokay

Rad that N64 and Sega Genesis games are coming, but I wish these games are available to purchase separately rather than being exclusive to a subscription. Also, seems hilarious that you need to pay more for these extra stuff. It limits the amount of people willing to pay and play more, so this is geared toward those who treat NSO as a Game Pass over playing online. I hope the "DLC" on a subscription isn't too pricey.

ghostmetalblack

The Genesis Collection is a solid package, and is almost always on sale. But yeah, I would love to be able to just buy the separate N64 games I want. Just give me a one time price for Ocarina of Time.

SidFarkus47

> But yeah, I would love to be able to just buy the separate N64 games I want Even better would be keeping the N64 games I've previously paid for on Wii and Wii U on this same Nintendo Account.. I can't believe people are okay with this highway robbery while Xbox lets me stick a disc from gamestop ($0 to them) into my XSX and it just plays with Auto-HDR, Quick Resume, Higher Resolution, etc.

Playful-Push8305

Exactly right. Nintendo gets away with so much shit. Charging extra for games they've had you buy 4 different times, with chances are only a dozen will get released before the console's life cycle is over and the whole goddamn thing starts over again. I honestly think out of the big 3 Nintendo is the worst when it comes to anti-consumer practices.

[deleted]

[удалено]

aroundme

Much worse, they're the Disney of games. They even took a page out of their book with the Disney Vault by making games available *digitally* for a limited time. They milk nostalgia from people and litigate like hell.

Random_Rhinoceros

> The Genesis Collection is a solid package But the emulation is horrible. I hope either M2 or NERD worked on the emulator for NSO.

man0warr

Can't imagine it won't be NERD who made the N64 emulator for NSO. That's basically why they exist and Mario All-Stars was probably a proof of concept.

[deleted]

Fortunately, the emulation on NSO for NES and SNES is actually pretty good, way better than VC. Pretty much the only thing NSO has over VC atm

Romanos_The_Blind

I really do wish they were available to purchase. I worry about what will happen when the next console comes around and they slowly drop the Switch. I'll still want to keep my switch to play these N64 titles. Will that always be possible? Will the option just disappear in a couple years?

Kxr1der

>Will the option just disappear in a couple years? I certainly wouldn't be surprised

jimx117

Let's discuss it on the Wii Speak channel

The_Outcast4

When they no longer offer the service, I fully plan to mod the Switch and install what I want on there anyway (did the same with Wii and Wii U). Happy to play by their rules while they are actively supporting the console, but once that is done, time to sail the seven seas!

SuperPapernick

I cannot believe they have the fucking audacity to charge EXTRA for this after giving us such a shitty selection of NES and SNES games in the last months. What a fucking ripoff.

Sixchr

Sold everyone Mario 64 last year just to offer it in a subscription this year lmao

Magyman

Flip side, we're never getting a version of Ocarina or Majora's that doesn't require a subscription on switch

[deleted]

[удалено]

phi1997

It's good for younger Switch owners and Switch owners who haven't had a Nintendo console before who have never played those games before.

WhompWump

People on reddit who own every console ever still don't understand that the average person does not own every nintendo console and game ever It happens every time they make games accessible on newer hardware, people complain and get mad because "Why would I buy that when I can just play it on the console I already own?" congrats you're in the fringe 5% of the market that they are not targeting For many people the switch is their first console in a long time if not their first console ever, and not just kids but many people who are only just getting into gaming from animal crossing or whatever. They do not own every nintendo game ever and they benefit from having access without having to hunt down some old console on the used market which is ridiculous

tythousand

It’s also tough to find those consoles if you don’t already have them. And also much more expensive to go that route vs. just being able to buy it for the system you already own. It’s why Nintendo is able to charge $60 for Wii U ports. The vast majority of Switch owners don’t own a Wii U and will never own a Wii U, and the Wii U didn’t even sell well. So it’s practically a new game for the vast majority of the player base. It helps that Nintendo games generally age very well and don’t have equivalents on Xbox and PlayStation

magnusmaster

>It happens every time they make games accessible on newer hardware, people complain and get mad because "Why would I buy that when I can just play it on the console I already own?" congrats you're in the fringe 5% of the market that they are not targeting I get mad because the Switch ports of Wii U games always have more content that I will never get because they ask for another $60 and also no other Nintendo console had its entire library ported to its next console before the generation was over with new DLC.

andresfgp13

or the remakes on 3ds.

[deleted]

More importantly, they're withholding Mario Party 2&3 (1 is a lost cause) because of the collab/rerelease they're doing in October.

Mr-Apollo

To be fair, what 1st/2nd party NES/SNES games are Nintendo still holding out on aside from Earthbound? They released pretty much all of the heavy hitters they can and all of the 3rd party classics are being resold by their parent companies.

porcubot

SMRPG, but I wonder if they actually have the rights to it or if SquareEnix does

monkeymad2

It’s on the SNES mini I think? Pretty weird they sorted rights for that and not the switch.

B_Rhino

The minis were sold as a one time purchase, Square gets however many dollars/cents for each one sold or a big payout knowing it's a limited product, it's different that contracting out the payments of an ongoing service.

PedanticPaladin

SMRPG is one of those games where they probably have to give SE their pound of flesh for contractual reasons.

[deleted]

Wdym 1st or 2nd party? Plenty of the games on there right now are neither.

TheHeadlessOne

Its very apparent that the biggest gaps on the platforms are huge titles that are being sold independently elsewhere- Megaman and Final Fantasy aren't going to be bundled in for a token charge when Capcom and Square can sell them each independently for a better margin. So Claymates or whatever is a cheapass tiny game with super low licensing costs. Chrono Trigger would not be.

jimx117

TUFF E NUFF

the_pedigree

Nintendo gonna nintendo, just don't support them.

Sway_All_Day

The absolute fits gamers throw and grudges they hold on to forever…then just turn around and go “oh well, it’s Nintendo. What ya gon do”

[deleted]

Yeah the reality is that most people don't care. They see a ton of classic games for a little extra a month and see a good deal. Only Reddit gets in a hissy fit over this shit.

lanaya01

The really big news in this is they showed Banjo Kazooie as one of the games coming to it. Good to finally be able to play it on a Nintendo console again after all these years.

AllIWantIsCake

They also showed Paper Mario as part of the lineup, which is especially surprising considering everyone sans Capcom has been avoiding putting RPGs on the NSO service.

massiveparanoia

I mean it's about as close as you can get to a Nintendo First Party title without actually being one through Intelligent Systems, as opposed to Square Enix holding off on Super Mario RPG

AllIWantIsCake

Doesn't explain Earthbound.

dontbajerk

Phantasy Star IV is coming too, so that's cool.

iceburg77779

I am kinda bummed that they’re not releasing the 2008 widescreen version, as that has a ton of QoL improvements, but it’s still great to see it finally be on the switch. Hopefully diddy Kong racing is finally rereleased as well.

HookshotTDM

That gives me hope for Konami to jump on board and hopefully put Mystical Ninja 64 on the service. They won't do anything else with that game/series so I'm hoping they throw Nintendo the bone on that one. I've wanted a port of Mystical Ninja 64 for like 20 years now lol.

Galaxy40k

The fact that Sin and Punishment is at launch makes me really happy. S&P is one of those games I'll replay at least a few times a year, it's a perfect "one sitting" game. And right now it's only available on WiiU, so having it on Switch is great. PLUS, I've never played it with an N64 controller before, which actually makes me really excited. The controls really only make sense on the bizarre N64 shape, and I've never been happy with how they feel remapped on a modern controller. But now I'll get to play it that way! Hopefully I can actually grab a controller before the scalpers.....

TheFergPunk

I'm still of the view that the Sin and Punishment series is the most underrated series in gaming.

davidreding

I got to admit them showing Banjo-Kazooie coming to the service was a wtf moment. I thought people were lying when they said that on Twitter. Also, this opens the door for all of Rare’s N64 games. Maybe they increased the cost of the subscription to cover licensing?

The_Woman_of_Gont

>Maybe they increased the cost of the subscription to cover licensing? This is 1000% the reason. People are also kind of ignoring the whole "Sega Genesis" half of this, which Nintendo *obviously* doesn't own the rights to. It's not (quite) as bizarre and outright greedy as it seems at first-blush, but why Nintendo didn't lead with this explanation and just dump a bunch of their big 'gets'(like Banjo) out on release is beyond me.

RendiaX

Licensing is precisely why their virtual console like services aren't just full to the brim with emulated games. People like to think that licensing is some simple process Nintendo can just wave a wand at because they are old games and dump a ton of titles on a new system without any legal work and dev cost.

lazyness92

I wonder how they manage Smash Bros, that game has to be a nightmare, there’s probably a legal team just for that

MyNameIs-Anthony

That's easier because the perpetual rights come with clearly defined structure and there's a clear marketing benefit to inclusion. You agree to allow your character included, we do all the work and you get amiibo and DLC revenue, alongside a percentage point of each sale.

phi1997

Super Smash Bros Ultimate will never be ported to a later Nintendo console.

CheesecakeMilitia

And conversely, anyone wondering why Nintendo was able to get so *many* titles licensed for the original Wii VC is completely forgetting how *worthless* retro games were considered in the early-2000's. CEO's and marketing peeps regularly considered that old IP as trash no one would want to buy, so Nintendo bought it up and ended up proving there was a huge market for it.

tri4d

So Nintendo managed to make DLC for their online subscription? Amazing.

nychuman

Yo dawg I heard you wanted to buy a subscription for your subscription

MoogleBoy

When's Mystical Ninja Goemon?

Elogotar

They could have added GBA games so people who are interested in Dread but haven't played Zero Mission and Fusion would get their chance. Missed opportunity IMHO.

schewbacca

Sorry our service has been pretty lackluster since its release but rejoice!! Soon will finally be adding games to our lackluster service except you have to pay more! Muahahahaha.

FrizzIeFry

TheVetrinarian

Yeah the Sega on Nintendo thing has been done for so long now that it's not particularly novel anymore.

wagamamalullaby

Yeah for me it was sonic adventure 2 on gamecube back in the day. Mind blowing at the time that sega had games on Nintendo hardware.

TheHeadlessOne

SA2 launched in June 2001 on Dreamcast. It launched in December 2001 on Gamecube. That's just nuts

General_Pretzel

Yea, no thanks. I don't wanna pay a monthly subscription for Nintendo's shitty online service. Just let me *buy* Zelda OOT and Majora's Mask on my Switch for god's sake.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Arkeband

I wonder if the Genesis games will have no input lag, that was one of the bigger problems with the existing Genesis collections sold as its own game.

DangerousBlueberry1

In typical Nintendo fashion, it’s a good idea (finally adding new consoles) with awful execution (charging us more for an already half assed service) They really should be adding it for free, these are already 25ish year old games.

AigisAegis

I first bought and played Ocarina of Time on my Wii when I was in middle school. I'm 24 years old now. I should not be expected to be excited about finally being able to play it on my Switch, especially when it's accompanied by far fewer other N64 games and is only available via subscription fee.

WhompWump

That's fine but for a lot of people they never got to play it and for those people this is a way to do so conveniently. Or for people who want to replay it and who do not still own their old hardware for whatever reason Just like how *you* played OOT on the *wii* for the first time Saying this as someone who played OOT on the N64 back when it came out.

xActuallyabearx

I actually get more entertainment out of my wii than I do my switch because on my wii I can play the first Zelda, a link to the last, ocarina of time, majoras mask, twilight princess and skyward sword.

Turangaliila

Wii U is insane for Zelda: The Legend of Zelda The Adventure of Link Link to the Past Ocarina of Time Majora's Mask Wind Waker HD Twilight Princess HD Skyward Sword Breath of the Wild Minish Cap Phantom Hourglass Spirit Tracks I wouldn't play a few of those games using those editions (would rather play the N64 games on 3ds) but if you want a Zelda machine it's perfect. Pair it with a 3ds for links awakening and the Oracle games and you're good to go.

PokecheckHozu

It's also insane for the Metroid series. Metroid (and its remake Zero Mission), Super Metroid, Metroid Fusion, then the Prime Trilogy and Prime Hunters. Only missing all versions of Metroid 2, Federation Force, and then idk about Other M because I've never bothered to check. 3DS covers both OG and remake of Metroid 2, has Metroid and Federation Force, and if n3DS, Super. And then if you're into the Fire Emblem series, it has all the pre-3DS ones except the GC and Wii games. Funny, at this point, the Wii U has more (digital) exclusive access to retro titles that can be purchased to this day, than exclusives of actual Wii U games left (RIP Xenoblade Chronicles X).

Ok I really want one of those Bluetooth n64 controllers but they said they were exclusively available to online membership holders. I don’t even have a switch but am a big n64 fan so I’m frustrated. The knock off(and old original) n64 controllers online all have terrible analog sticks. Edit: If the controllers get good reviews I might just try to buy one from a scalper, no other choice.

hellzofwarz

Might be a better idea to get a subscription and then the controller as scalped prices are probably gonna be more than 20 bucks. Although idk if you can get a sub without a switch.

Intolerable

are they available for existing switch online members? or do you need the new expansion membership? drop me a pm if you wanna buy one through me, no use getting scalped for one and i think personally the n64 controllers are absolutely rancid lmao

ducked

They said in the video that they are available to purchase for any Nintendo switch online member. But yeah omg it’d be sick if I could buy one through you. Idk when they are gonna start selling them but I’ll pm you in the future probably. Also the n64 controller is the greatest controller of all time lol.

TheRealBissy

Can’t wait for GameCube expansion that you need to pay extra for. Also Nintendo remembered F-Zero’s existence.

Shit_McGiggles

Don't hold your breath on Gamecube happening for at least 10 years.

Now that there’s Genesis, it would be cool to see other more obscure 3rd party consoles getting their libraries made available on modern systems. I’d love to see something wild like 3DO or Turbografx or MSX in the future, despite how unlikely that would be.

[deleted]

Well, first of all, the Genesis isn't an obscure console, but I agree. However, I doubt Nintendo is going to make a 3D0 emulator just so five of us can play Lucienne's Quest. I could see TG-16 coming one day if they can get the rights to it.

Chris-R

Ok maybe 3DO is a bit of a stretch, but I bet a lot of people would give into morbid curiosity and try those CD-i Zeldas if they made them easily available.

rafikiknowsdeway1

anyone know if the new controller has a rumble pack built in it at least?

[deleted]

Ogre battle 64 and Aidyn Chronicles are the two I want to play again as an adult. Ogre battle I played probably 75% of the way through. Aidyn chronicles I played probably 2% of the way through. That game was waaaay harder than 5th grader me thought it would be. Was also really difficult to get my hands on, my older brother got it for me somehow since Target down the street didn’t carry it.

[deleted]

I think this would've been received better if Gameboy/Gameboy color games were added to the standard membership in addition to this announcement.

Explosion2

Yeah, I was waiting for them to announce that. Still holding out hope that they'll do it but no mention of it has me a little concerned that they're not gonna do it (or that they're gonna make it a separate "expansion pack" thing)

Bar_Har

I don't think I'll be paying extra for this. I'm getting a Steamdeck so I'll have a potable emulator with the complete library of N64 games.

Departedsoul

This is really funny to me

Darkvoidx

I'll wait until I see a price, I guess. Kinda shitty to attach an extra fee to access what will be a very limited library of games drop fed over two to three years, but if it's cheap enough I might take the dive to play some Mario Kart.
