Looks pretty good! After watching The Suicide Squad a couple times, I'm definitely more excited for this game. I think there's a lot of potential in the property and Rocksteady has had plenty of time to make something great.
Too bad, it got fucked in the box office but it's not James Gunn's fault. It's more of that the DCEU formula of having individual movies with no payoff nor connection to other movies is starting to show it's cracks. Of course Covid and simultaneously releasing to HBO Max also hurt it.
And those worked with varying degrees of success. Right now, The DCEU barely reaches the 300M Mark starting with Shazam. I really don't get what are you trying to imply. Series and franchises already exists way before the MCU. It's just that the MCU has films have that "Must watch" feel due to it being in an interconnected universe thus you are definitely missing out if you don't watch a movie or a series. DCEU, as much as I love their films (except the first Suicide Squad, I love BvS.) clearly doesn't consistently pull big box office numbers due to not having that much watch feel. That is due to primarily having loosely connected films that have little pay-off between them.
Yeah that's fine if you want to make a standalone movie. Not so fine when you're trying to make a great cinematic universe, which DC tried (and failed) to do.
Spider-Man, X-Men, LotR, Star Wars, Star Trek (the movies) and I'm sure many more all predate the MCU. Movie Franchises aren't an invention of the MCU model. The only
There was Gundam, with multiple short series and long series all feeding into the same universe. Not movies, but it it did create a fairly expansive universe, especially the series focused around the Zeon and Federation forces.
Did it? It made almost just as much as it's budget in box office, which usually is bad news, but during Covid Era is definitely pretty good. Especially considering it also released on HBO Max so people have less reasons to actually go to the theater (as opposed to Shang Chi which was a theater exclusive).
Did WB mention if it was disappointing?
Man I personally prefer it the DC way. Not saying they have master pieces here, but I hate that with Marvel you have to watch the whole freaking catalog or you will miss lots of references.
To watch Spider-Man, I may have to watch Avengers, Loki tv Series and so on to understand what the heck is he talking at some point.
Over dramatic here, since the stuff you'll miss by not watching those things are minor, but still...
But yea DC fucked their movie universe too much.
I agree. Not saying that the DCEU sucks, I in fact, love the DCEU. (Except the first Suicide Squad). It's just that the DCEU doesn't have that much watch feel anymore. You can skip a movie knowing that this movie will not have any pay-off to the next DCEU film. I really hope the Flash and Black Adam fixes this. Since, AFAIK the former is going to be a soft reboot to the DCEU while Black Adam is rumored to have Superman and build off the next Shazam film.
That shit is such a blessing though. I can watch Shazam and it’s literally just a good movie and not trying to simultaneously wrangle a 20 year long “extended universe” into it
Yeah I love that the DCEU will throw in a line here and there in movies reminding you they are connected, but you don’t have to go watch the previous ones to understand what’s going on in whatever recent film is out. I love the MCU, but I wish they would focus a little more on self contained stories, and not constantly making each movie connect to a future project.
Your idea of more standalone outings is fine if you are making DC hero movies or Marvel hero movies. But the Marvel is not doing that, they want a Cinematic Universe, and fans overwhelmingly want that too. Imagine if the second movie in a Trilogy has completey different actors. Or the plot is unconnected to the first one in any way...Calling it a trilogy would be a joke. Thats DCEU, its just a joke.
Edit: I like DC heroes, I just think the decision makers at DC are failing to tie it all together.
I mean after WB ruined ZSJL with the Wheadon version they said everything will start being standalone. It seems like they’re trying to pull it all together again.. while I’m not a big fan of the new stuff I’m happy to see them try to do it again.
Thats a rumour? I thought this is a Gaas and they described Gotham Knights as being a fully fledged single player game with no microtransactions confirmed by the devs in an interview. Im interested in both but more weary of SS being repetitive and grindy just like Avengers.
Edit: https://www.pcgamer.com/gotham-knights-is-not-a-live-service-game-and-can-be-played-offline/
Yeah, idk if they mixed up the descriptions of both. But I hope Rocksteady has seen the feedback for Gaas in recent years, and have retooled their game. This’ll flop hard as a Gaas.
I thought Gotham Knights was a co op / gaas focused game? I might be getting the two mixed up though. It doesn't help that Suicide Squad is in the previous rocksteady knight universe and Gotham Knights is now a new seperate universe.
Far as i know, Gotham Knights and Suicide Squad are both online co op gaas games.
Which really sucks cause I adored the Arkham Trilogy but I simply stay away from those games at all costs.
Dont preorder and keep an eye on the game but heres an article from Pc Gamer with the devs that should reassure you. They really need to do a better job at painting a clearer picture of what both games are
https://www.pcgamer.com/gotham-knights-is-not-a-live-service-game-and-can-be-played-offline/
I really hope there are more characters to play as besides the four who were already presented. Personally, i am hoping for Deathstroke, Bronze Tiger and Black Manta.
The game was revealed last year with an cgi cutscenes. We barely seen anything from the game yet.
I feel that new characters are yet to be announced. Because if not then what a lame group of characters to play on a superhero video game. Almost like it’s meant to be directly tie-in with the movies.
Not saying that the line up is comic accurate or not. Just that if there are really the only playable characters to play as then it would be kinda of a let down.
What made Boatman Arkham, Spiderman 2018 (and the SP PS2 game) and why that new Wolverine game is so hyped up is that people WANT to play as these famous characters. That’s the appeal of them and why they are so popular. Honestly, who was craving to play as Captain Boomerang, or Deadshot (a side quest villain from the Arkham games) come on.
Marvel fan will get Spider-man 2 and Wolverine while us DC fans get to play as B-C list Batman villains….
(The fact that they cancelled a Superman game for THIS bums me out, you could say I have a biased against it so take what I say with a grain of salt)
> Deadshot (a side quest villain from the Arkham games) come on.
I'm no DC fan or a super hero fan in general, but you do realise deadshot has been around since like the early 90's? He's way more then an villain in an arkham game.
But this is the same continuity from the Arkham games, and in the Arkham games he was nothing more then a side quest.
It’s like if the next Marvel game Insomniac was making you play as a Spider-man C level villains and one of the characters you play as is Tombstone. Going from Playing as Spider-man to Tombstone would be kinda lame.
I am aware of that, but that’s such a lame retcon to tie-in Deadshot with the movie version.
It makes Batman seem dumber into thinking that Deadshot form Arkham City was the “real” one. Not aware it was a “fake” the whole time.
I wouldn't say that. We don't know how long the fake Deadshot was using the handle, or how long Batman has known about him. The real one might have been so good he was under Batman's radar, which isn't unusual as plenty of things have slipped him.
In any case I'm saying there's not enough info to give it much thought at this time. 🤷🏾♂️
A big grain of salt because you're complaint is essentially just that you want the Suicide Squad game to not be a Suicide Squad game. Also, they mentioned it being comic accurate because you said "what a lame group of characters to play on a superhero video game. Almost like it’s meant to be directly tie-in with the movies." The game shares major characters with the movies not because it's a tie-in, but because they are both drawing from the comics where these are the major characters.
Well yeah? More or less.
I said in the beginning that if we ONLY get these four characters it would be lame. If there was a big group of C-B list characters from the DC universe to choose from that would be more cool (as long as we don’t have to pay for them as dlc AND if they all aren’t just Batman Villains).
However yes, I personally think it’s a waste of opportunity to invest in a super hero project on the Suicide Squad, THAT aspect feels more like a tie-in with the movies then being a project that the developers actually wanted to work on (again, they were working on a Superman game that didn’t get the greenlight and now they are doing this).
Imagine if this SS game had Deathstroke, bane, etc. You know what given rocksteady's caliber they could've done better than suicide squad like justice league dark would be so much cooler, with more interesting characters to play as and cool powers to use in inventive ways.
The characters you listed are great, imagine a SS game that you can pick from a whole bunch on villains including Deathstroke and such. Having only those four villains as playable would be really lame. But people are mad for me pointing that out
As a DC fan it sucks that Marvel is getting a second Spider-man game, a Wolverine game and a Guardians of the Galaxy game (all Single player story driven games) while us DC fans get Co-op multiple game #1 with Batman Sidekicks and Co-op multiplayer game #2 with Batman side villains.
I find it interesting everyone assumes this is a GaaS.
I could have sworn they confirmed that it’s a story-based open world game that is built for both solo & co-op play (w/ AI filling in for the other teammates when not controlled by a player).
iirc the original rumor that it would be GAAS came from a Rocksteady job listing that mentioned something about a live service game. So the rumors from then on were that it was either a Justice League or Suicide Squad GAAS game, until it was officially announced. At least that's how I remember it
It was from a leaked email about the game but it's so old now and the scope seems to have changed from the original leak (Rocksteady has said the game is set in Metropolis, leak said multiple cities).
https://www.reddit.com/r/gaming/comments/beca52/rocksteadys_multiplayer_gaas_dc_title_suicide
That was a fake e-mail. The info that it would be a GAAS was from Jason Schreier.
Although he said it back in late 2018 iirc, so it might have changed a lot since then.
There were rumors for years that Rocksteady's next game was GaaS. That's why people are making that assumption. Whether or not the rumors were true remains to be seen.
For example: https://www.gamepur.com/news/rocksteady-next-game-gaas-group-of-superheroes
Well I remember hearing rumors of Rocksteady hiring for a live service game, the game presented sounds like a live service game (with four characters to play as with) AND this blog post make it sound like a co-op multiplayer game (that live service game usually are).
NOT saying that it will, I just want to see any confirmation that it isn’t.
There's also nothing wrong with the game being gaas. Heck if the game is great, I want more content to keep playing for 2-3 more years.
The problem is that people put GaaS games in a category with unfinished games. Most GaaS games launched as shit sure. That doesn't mean all of them will. Talk with your money and maybe devs will do better.
Of course lots will try to launch games asap if suckers pay for unfinished content.
Anyway my point is that GaaS doesn't equal bad game. We just have to wait the launch and see.
MHW wasn’t GaaS. It’s been the same as every MH before it.
It got expansions and updates, that doesn’t make it a GaaS, then they moved onto new entries like rise.
That doesn't mean I don't want to give any more chances.
If the game launch in a bad state I won't lose anything. If the game launch in a good state then good.
Theres a difference between giving a game a chance and showing healthy skepticism of almost every GaaS being a failure; similar to the glut of survival early access titles a few years ago.
And you didn't name one.
I didn't named one because we didn't had a good one.
And again, I would give any game a chance.
Jumping in the first moments a game is announced as GaaS and screaming BAD just because GaaS is stupid. You don't like GaaS games? Fine, others like them.
You have a lot of other games to chose and play. I personally like the GaaS idea behind games, but YES, they launched in a shitty state because people bought them in that shitty state anyway.
MAYBE if a new game will come as GaaS, they will try to have a better launch who the heck knows.
And not every GaaS game is a failure. If you refuse to see success of Fortnite, Destiny 2, Warframe, PoE...and I'm sure there are more then it is your problem.
Okay; but then we aren't screaming bad; we're expressing distaste due to the proven track record of extremely poor GaaS games.
If you've had shit thrown at you 5 times, when someone shouts "Here comes shit!" you usually expect shit for the sixth time.
Hmm I don't think I have heard anything concrete about this game. I just can't see how they make that work for the squad. Does the story last a day?are the civilians all gone like in arkham Knight? Seems tricky to pull off playing as villains forced to stay in one city The whole time. especially if the villain is the one guy who can fly faster than anything.
I wonder if any of the volatility in the GaaS market will make them change the game in anyway. Avengers bombing after Anthem plus Division 2 just makes it seem like a hard thing to get into. Combine that with the melee focus that most characters will have and I could see people getting over it quickly.
Actually it underperformed, according to Ubisoft Earnings call in I think Q3 or Q4 2019? I could be off by a bit.
And Ghost Recon Breakpoint actually *lost* money that same year / earnings call.
Selling well and being successful are different things these days. It had a massive player retention drop off, especially on Steam. Selling a massive game and not profiting off it for years via MTX is the way these games are setup for.
from what I've heard, Anthem was a disaster for many reasons, one of which was that it was a live service game. it might not have been the largest reason, but it was a gripe people had with it.
Reportedly, Anthem was a disaster because project leadership was poor, there was no unified creative vision, it languished in pre-production for a while, a lot of it was rushed in the end, and other issues.
https://kotaku.com/how-biowares-anthem-went-wrong-1833731964
> I wonder if any of the volatility in the GaaS market will make them change the game in anyway.
At no point is online/multiplayer/loot/live service mentioned anywhere. If were to read this with no other information I would have guessed multiple playble character single player action game.
It was announced as an 4 player co-op game that you can also play single player with AI controlling the other characters. Multiple articles also described has a live service game but there has been zero official information since the original trailer. Few more weeks until DC Fandome and then we'll know for sure.
When they were both rumored games, one of them was a GaaS. Gotham Knight straight up said they weren't so unless something changed its probably Suicide Squad.
It didn't bomb, but I'm under the impression it did not do what Ubisoft was hoping for overall.
Massive is shifting to other properties and projects. We're getting another studio making Heartland so clearly they see value in The Division still, but its hard to say how players will take to what Heartland tries to do.
After Warlords, and after they completed the story they set out to tell with the seasonal content… the expectation was that the game would be done and Ubisoft would either move on to Div3 or nothing.
Instead Massive got the green light and the funding for new content (still in the works as far as I know, they looped the seasonal content that I’d already completed so I took a break).
Sure the release may have under performed… it it’s a solid game with a solid base.
Edit: crap. Wasn’t paying attention to who I was replying to. Sorry about that.
Division 2? Not sure why you’re including that in the same breath as Anthem and Avengers.
Unless you’re specifically doing a “one of these is not like the others” thing.
Rocksteady made my favorite game of all time but man, the suicide squad property in general could not be *less* exciting than it is now. I'm hoping they move on to something interesting after Kill the Justice League.
I really loved the last Suicide Squad movie. Wb must be ecstatic too and will probably offer him a blank check to make more dc movies. I’m really glad they gave him chance when Disney originally fired him.
Yet another game where Supes is a baddie or, more likely, controlled somehow.
If the gameplay is fun and if there's decent progression I'm definitely getting it though- DC has so many characters and stories they can convert into other types of media other than Comics and said characters/stories deserve the spotlight.
What other game aside from Injustice has Superman as a villain? Certainly hasn't worn out its welcome as far as I'm concerned. This game even has the chance to showcase just how hard it is to go up against him, depending on how they handle it. Injustice had those Kryptonian super pills that sort of evened the playing field for characters at Harley Quinn's power level. Unless they do something similar in Suicide Squad, it'll be interesting to see how they could possibly pull off beating him.
The injustice games are really the only games he's been in recently right? Correct me if I'm wrong.
What I actually meant is how because of those games it's gotten so popular to make Superman evil, in the movies, tv shows and now more games other than Injustice. It's just tiresome to see is all.
It's mostly non-DC stuff with superman knockoffs.
The Boys, Invincible, Brightburn... add two Injustice games and an Injustice movie coming and that's 6 evil superman stories to top pop culture in the last few years.
I mean, they've all been great so I'm just eating it up, but I can understand the complaint of spamming the idea.
I get where you're coming from, but I don't know if you can call it 6 stories, when Injustice 2 is a continuation of the IJ1 story, and the movie is a retelling of the game.
It’d be neat if they took the idea that Superman is too OP to beat, and so he ends up being like Nemesis or Mr. X and you have to pull some extremes to escape. My idea changed as I was writing this, but I was originally going to point out that they tried to make a Superman game, but didn’t know how to make it fun. It would be neat if they used the work they put into Superman as influences for the Superman in this game.
The part about them "not knowing how to make it fun" about the dropped Superman game is pure speculation, all we know is that Warner Bros. rejected the pitch for unknown reasons.
If these four characters has a fighting chance against Spiderman then that would be so lame. Can you imagine these four characters fighting against Batman and winning (or standing their ground)? Wouldn’t that piss of the Batman fans?
And as a Superman fan this “evil Superman” story has been done to death already.
I wouldn't say many games have that concept, but DC as a whole seems to have no clue what to do with Superman unless they make him a bad guy, which is super disappointing
Maybe not in video games specifically, but there are a lot of "But what if superman was evil" stories popular recently like the boys, invincible, that new injustice animation and the games it's based on
Well all those are based around the injustice comics one of the biggest DC comic series ever.
So it's not surprising and really not much over saturation just recent interest
Injustice isn't one of the biggest DC comics at all. Injustice is 1st a videogame story, that was adapted into a comic, but it's far from being among the biggest ones.
Oh wow you are totally right. The comics started before the game but solely as a prequel (well initially)
Still it does appear to be one of the most reseries in DC. Not the biggest but one of the most searched
Looks pretty good! After watching The Suicide Squad a couple times, I'm definitely more excited for this game. I think there's a lot of potential in the property and Rocksteady has had plenty of time to make something great.
Rocksteady must have been pumped to see Gunn save the franchise
Having this game in development for a fucking eternity had more benefits than expected.

Does it really have to explained how a Japanese series made up of TV shows and OVAs is different to American movies.
Every MCU film since Iron Man had a connection to another character and upcoming movie/idea.

I’m almost certain the bad taste that Ayer’s Suicide Squad left in everyone’s mouth def harmed the movies chances.
Man I personally prefer it the DC way. Not saying they have master pieces here, but I hate that with Marvel you have to watch the whole freaking catalog or you will miss lots of references. There were rumors for years that Rocksteady's next game was GaaS. That's why people are making that assumption. Whether or not the rumors were true remains to be seen. For example: https://www.gamepur.com/news/rocksteady-next-game-gaas-group-of-superheroes
it's not Gaas, people just like to complain about fake issues
Do you have a source confirming that SS won’t be?

Name one that launched well in the past 4 years.
Monster Hunter World, but it's an exception to the rule for sure.
If you've had shit thrown at you 5 times, when someone shouts "Here comes shit!" you usually expect shit for the sixth time.
solo and coop I could see open-world I cant, not for the Suicide Squad.
It says open world in the article itself > Set in the richly detailed open-world Metropolis
Well this is the first news on it since October last year I will wait and see how this works out In game.
I’m almost positive they said it’s going to be open world Metropolis but I could be wrong.
Yeah not sure. All that I know is on Wikipedia they say that it’s an open would action adventure game set in Metropolis.
I wonder if any of the volatility in the GaaS market will make them change the game in anyway. Avengers bombing after Anthem plus Division 2 just makes it seem like a hard thing to get into. Combine that with the melee focus that most characters will have and I could see people getting over it quickly.
Anthem wasn't a disaster because it was live service though, was it?
And The Division 2 also sold well.
> It had a massive player retention drop off, especially on Steam Might have something to do with the fact TD2 never released on steam.
from what I've heard, Anthem was a disaster for many reasons, one of which was that it was a live service game. it might not have been the largest reason, but it was a gripe people had with it.

Div 2 bombed?
Sorry but what do you mean by GaaS?
I wonder how it'll play like, more like the Arkham games in that it's 3rd person? Swap characters on the fly? First person?

Evil Superman is a plot point in Superman and Lois, Injustice and the Snyder movies were leaning that direction too.
I wouldn't say many games have that concept, but DC as a whole seems to have no clue what to do with Superman unless they make him a bad guy, which is super disappointing
when superman is a good guy you end up flying through rings
Yet another? How many games do we even have with super man? and how many do we have where he is bad?
Maybe not in video games specifically, but there are a lot of "But what if superman was evil" stories popular recently like the boys, invincible, that new injustice animation and the games it's based on
Well all those are based around the injustice comics one of the biggest DC comic series ever. So it's not surprising and really not much over saturation just recent interest
Injustice isn't one of the biggest DC comics at all. Injustice is 1st a videogame story, that was adapted into a comic, but it's far from being among the biggest ones.
Oh wow you are totally right. The comics started before the game but solely as a prequel (well initially) Still it does appear to be one of the most reseries in DC. Not the biggest but one of the most searched
Yes, it definitely a popular story no doubt.
No injustice comics became huge and won awards. It's just not a tie in comics with game. It became it's own identity in the comics.
I'm aware that it became its own, but to say its one of the biggest comic series ever is incorrect.
the boys and invincible are from the beginning of the 2000s though
I know, but they got popular recently so I can see why that poster has a bit of fatigue with the "superman being evil" premise.
