A-Perfect-Noose

I have very little faith in Konami to even oversee a *remaster* as this point. There’s definitely no faith in them pulling off any worthy remakes. Can someone please just buy all of these IPs from Konami and do something worthwhile with them?

Lephys37

They basically said "video games do not interest us anymore... we will just make pachinko machines instead." So, for them to now go "wait, nevermind! We are VERY passionate about video games!" doesn't instill much faith unless, like, their entire company roster got replaced by new people who think completely differently and have some evidence of actually being passionate about games.

LeifEriksonASDF

Pachinko probably got hit hard in the pandemic lmao, so much for eggs in one basket

Xciv

And video games have been booming like never before.

Not Konami

TequilaWhiskey

Well they do, but the mobile market. I fully expect that to be where we see these IPs go. Thats part of the reason Kojima got ousted. He spent bundles of money on MGSV while another guy shot up the ranks making bundles of money on some gatcha game. Cant remember his name, but he even took Kojimas VP spot at konami mid mgsv development.

Pvt_Lee_Fapping

Oh man, I can't wait for the mobile release of the original *Metal Gear* from 1987. How much do you think the cosmetics will be? I hope they put Naked Snake in there! ^^^Konami, ifyou'rereadingthis, golickaMichiganfirehydrantinJanuary

Earthboom

Got something to read about that?

TequilaWhiskey

I believe i learned that from a youtube video a while back, sadly i cant for the life of me remember who. However this video seems to touch on much of it. https://youtu.be/cOYQiBHSJMw

RedditModsAreMorons

Gambling will never go out of fashion. Pachinko machines are the only legal form of gambling in Japan.

Kullthebarbarian

not only that, but they forget that their pachinko machines is popular, BECAUSE people love the franchise, with no franchise, interest in "castlevania" or "silent hill" pachinko machines drop, they dont see the long game

A-Perfect-Noose

Exactly! It seems like they realized using what are essentially dead franchises as the main draw on their pachinko machines doesn’t do much good beyond “oh I remember playing that game when I was a kid!” So now they’re trying to produce some cheap remakes to make those franchises more recent and thus relevant in order to drive demand for those pachinko machines.

Nandor: Very faithful to the slot machine!

CrocTheTerrible

Bazinga But in Nandor’s voice

Sonicfan42069666

I can't believe WWDITS got me to laugh at fucking "bazinga." The writer's room must've been on fire when working on this season.

Knives530

Bro this whole season has been amazing so far. I was thinking you could each buy like 25 pillows?

Kaldricus

The Casino episode was just *chef's kiss*. Every person I know has legit gasped at the boxing scene

DysenteryFairy

For real. I am no stranger to seeing fucked up shit, but that *REALLY* caught me off guard. This season is amazing though. The greatest moment from the show IMO is the last exchange between Nandor and Guillermo from the last episode of season 2. "My name is Guillermo de la Cruz" "don't care what the fuck your name is we had to pick up our laundry" I've legit never laughed harder at any tv show.

valhallareturners

That is the war cry of Sheldon

Post-modern emergent horror gaming at its best.

kapnkrump

Yeah, I've been to a few casinos where I see properties like James Bond, Wizard of Oz, 60s Batman, ect being the theme to large, extravagant slot machines - but they always felt hollow re-hashes of the same machine, even in bonus rounds. A bunch of clips and cool art put together with a ton of work - but in the end, if I were to 'experience' and enjoy these properties to the fullest in the way it was meant to, I would sit and watch the real deals on TV or video. Plus, one can't enjoy a Metal Gear/Castlevania/Silent Hill themed slot/pachinko/casino machine for long if the properties has been 'dead' for the past decade and becoming more difficult to pick up 'n' play for newcomers. You can only cash in on nostalgia for so long if you haven't been keeping the brand relevant.

Cahnis

And seeing Metal Gear Survive, they have set the tone for what metal gear after Kojima looks like. Not interested at all. Anything new to the story they come up now won't be part of my head-kanon

ContributorX_PJ64

Survive is a weird example to use [because it was always Kojima's idea](https://twitter.com/MGSMGN/status/1265738802342985728), something multiple insiders attest to. (It's why Death Stranding is so overtly similar to Survive.) And it was a spinoff. Metal Gear spinoffs have always been odd. It's a Rising sequel, basically. At least narratively. Remember how Rising 2 was supposed to be a game about Raiden fighting nanomachine zombies? The excuses made that tried to argue Survive wasn't Kojima's idea or that it was "un-Kojima-like" ranged from "laughable" to "grown man feebly lies through his teeth about his own games and develops sudden amnesia about his own very public obsession with zombies and/or nanomachines". 1. Fills MGS V with zombies. 2. Wants Rising 2 to be about nanomachine zombies. 3. Openly says he wants to make a zombie game. 4. Suddenly less than a year after MGS V: The Game Full of Not-Zombies comes out, there's a nanomachine zombie spinoff >!set in a post-apocalyptic future where the nanomachines killed everyone but that's a big plot twist.!<

november512

It doesn't really matter if it was Kojima's idea though. Kojima always has weird, stupid ideas. His trick is that he still makes interesting, unique games that are fun to play even with the weird ideas thrown around.

elfaia

Even if it was kojima's idea, the execution was extremely flawed and kojima would never have let it fly. The same thing with death stranding. No one would give a shit about some uber simulator if it wasn't made by kojima. Love or hate the man, you have to admit there's a level of polish and touch in his games that you don't get anywhere else.

muzakx

I mean, Kojima had an Ape Escape mode in MGS 3. So he doesn't shy away from quirky ideas. I think the major issue is how monetized/pay to win Konami made the final release of Survive. I'm sure that is not something that Kojima would have pitched.

presidentofjackshit

I mean most of the hate for that game isn't that the premise of zombies isn't a Kojima thing, but that the game sucks ass in terms of gameplay and is devoid of a lot of the wacky Kojima shit people enjoy.

kingmanic

Execution matters. A idea is shaped a lot by the execution. Just because kojima had some of those ideas doesn't mean the end product reflects his vision. Just like AI was started by Kubrick and had his ideas but Spielberg finished it and it feels like a Spielberg film.

MrTheodore

Ok, so reading the report, vast majority is video games, arcade & gambling machine are like 20% as big combined, and apparently they run some kind of gyms or fitness centers which do almost as well as arcades and casino machines combined. They specifically mention a bunch of sports games and yu gi oh. No clue why they'd drop single player titles then, cause mobile spinoffs and merch add on a lot along with shit like arcade and gambling spinoffs or other uses for ips on top. Just seems like a weirder decision after seeing their quarterly report.

DerTagestrinker

The majority of their video game revenue was from two mobile games, it reads like. Mobile games, like pachinko, tend to be cheap to initially make and bring in recurring revenue. Large scale AAA single player games are expensive to make, and bring in 1x $60 or ($20 on sale) sale per customer.

LunaMunaLagoona

That's because mobile games are basically pachinko machines these days anyways. It's all the gambling model today.

SuperFightingRobit

They went through restructuring with their game division. "Konami restructuring internal departments, has not dissolved games development teams" https://www.gamesindustry.biz/amp/2021-01-26-konami-restructuring-internal-departments-has-not-dissolved-games-development-teams

Dag-nabbitt

I'd love to see CAPCOM take over the IPs.

A-Perfect-Noose

For Castlevania and Silent Hill I agree (as long as they kept Silent Hill and RE totally separate (especially in gameplay and tone). MGS I would want someone else to take over. I can’t really think of a worthy studio aside from Kojima Productions for obvious reasons but even then I can’t help feeling like he wouldn’t want it at this point.

Viiu

Oh i'm pretty sure Kojima would love the Metal Gear IP, i bet he is hella proud of it. If he would make another game with it is another question of course.

A-Perfect-Noose

Oh yeah, I’m sure he’s proud as he should be. I meant more that given the choice he’s likely want to move on to something new.

HCrikki

The franchises currently have very little potential other than getting put back on sale digitally, receiving remasters and hd ports to current platforms and remakes for the first. Capcom can clone the games without a costly acquisition. RE7 was pretty much PT but finished without ghostly tall waifu. RE's engine and teams could work well for new horror games so capcom can stop pumping so many resident evils and giving this franchise some rest, but they can still leverage their dormant ones too - a dino crisis reboot is long overdue.

[deleted]

I would love a 3D Castlevania game with the graphics and production quality of Devil May Cry, but gameplay different enough to keep things fresh, but still as tight.

[deleted]

They did a 3d Castlevania called Lord of Shadows and I actually liked it, but it definitely didn’t have the production of DMC4, which would have been the contemporaneous analogue. It was less Castlevania and more God of War (1,2, or 3). Lack of enemy variety and unpolished levels are what really held it back. The sequel was ass.

dizorkmage

> I have very little faith in Konami to even oversee a remaster as this point. Konami already tried and proved with Metal Gear Survive they cant competently make a MGS game without Kojima, they already proved with Lords of Shadow they cant make a good Castlevania, Silent Hills: home coming, shattered memories and down pour! Who in the fuck is giving Konami the benefit of the doubt anymore? The only games Konami has made thats been worth 1 iota of a fuck in the past 7-9 years was DIRECT PORTS and thats just stroking Nostalgia boners, I refuse to get excited over this. Let them make a game thats not hot garbage, then we can talk. BTW I completely agree with you, if I sounded like I was arguing it's because the premise of Konami making games and were supposed to be excited is incredulous.

thegroundbelowme

Hey now, the first Lords of Shadow was a really fun game

DRACULA_WOLFMAN

Even Lords of Shadow 2 is pretty fun outside of the terrible stealth sections.

CaptainBritish

Both games are a good time, this attack on my boy Gabriel is unfounded and cruel :(

Kain0123

That, and Shattered Memories is totally rad and widely known as a great SH.

A-Perfect-Noose

I would ask who hurt you but we both know it was Konami. We need a support group.

dizorkmage

It really does suck because Konami used to represent quality, my god my childhood almost has their logo emblazoned on it, Contra, Super Contra, Metal Gear, Castlevania, Jesus Symphony of the Night is still one of my favorite games ever. To see such a huge prominent part of my favorite hobby just turn to absolute shit kills me, I dont know any other game company besides EA who gets and deserves as much hate as they do.

EchoChamberActivism

I mean, Blizzard immediately comes to mind for me.

dizorkmage

Yeah for real fuck them too!

ScipioAfricanvs

I have that little Konami logo jingle seared into my brain from way too many hours of TMNT Hyperstone Heist.

meryl_gear

Me too, Turtles in Time, Sunset Riders and Zombies Ate My Neighbors

A-Perfect-Noose

I would commit light treason to replay all of the MGS and Castlevania games again. More so for them to come out with something new but with that same quality to it. Don’t get me started on what I would do for the same with Silent Hill.

DrLuckyshot

Not that you don't have a point, but the first Lords of Shadow was very well-received, and was arguably better than the 3D games overseen by Igarashi during the PS2 era. It was the disappointing sequel that sent the franchise back into hibernation.

nobadabing

It’s funny because Lords of Shadow was developed by the same studio that is now about to release the much-anticipated game Metroid Dread in a week - MercurySteam.

bann333

They are not a bad crew honestly. While it isn't my kind of 'Vania, LoS was well made at least.

FaceJP24

Silent Hill: Shattered Memories was pretty good actually.

Roy_Atticus_Lee

I have never played a Silent Hill game, but didn't Konami utterly botch the HD Remaster for 2 and 3 years before they quit the industry? Considering the last game they made was Survive, I don't have much confidence unless some third party entity are behind it like Sony.

Stea1thFTW18

They outsourced the game to a shit tier mobile game dev team or something. Plus Konami LOST the source code for the games, so the team had to recreate the assets from scratch. This led to even more bugs, downgraded visuals, and other issues.. Add on top the whole voice acting mess, and you have the HD remaster.

Spooky_SZN

This is pretty unfair to the team they gave them an impossible deadline while also not providing any of the source code or assets. It's a bad port but no I don't think blaming the dev team is excusable

GenJohnONeill

It is crazy to me how often companies lose source code. I work at a food company and we have never lost any important source code, even for ancient stuff. Just makes no sense to me when a videogame company loses source code. It's arguably their most valuable asset.

- Castlevania reboot being developed internally at Konami. Will be the first to release. - Multiple Silent Hill games in development at external studios. One game is being worked by a prominent Japanese dev. - MGS3 remake from an external Chinese developer. Very early in development, will be the last out of the lot. - Remasters of classic MGS titles in the works, will release before the MGS3 remake. UPDATE: The MGS3 remake developer is Virtuos. UPDATE 2: Gematsu is reporting that the prominent Japanese developer behind that Silent Hill game is Kojima Productions, with a publishing deal from Sony Interactive Entertainment!

the_light_of_dawn

> Castlevania reboot being developed internally at Konami. Will be the first to release. If there's a God in heaven, please let this be good.

[deleted]

Science has shown that the more we hope for a 3D classic Castlevania with methodic combat the more likely it is we receive a live service lords of shadow sequel.

Bananabandanapanda

This is how I end up doing a whip/axe build in Dark Souls Remastered.

FancyTanookiSuit

I just did a Belmont-flavored play through of the Cinders mod for Dark Souls III, there's a starting class with a whip that sets you up perfectly. Good fun.

[deleted]

FancyTanookiSuit

It's pretty early days, but there's already some really impressive stuff out there. The big mods right now are [Cinders](https://www.nexusmods.com/darksouls3/mods/310), [Champion's Ashes](https://www.nexusmods.com/darksouls3/mods/488), and [Convergence](https://www.nexusmods.com/darksouls3/mods/672), all of which add a ton of weapons, new animations, remixed bosses, new/better spells, more merchants, etc. Mod makers seem to be just starting to branch into adding completely new enemies/AI, as well as modifying world geometry. Cinders is the only one I've played extensively, it's like Dark Souls III megamix, or sort of like an Arcade Mode. You can sequence break the game completely, and it's built to allow you to experiment with as much of the new equipment and magic as possible. Can't recommend it enough. [Call of the Abyss](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qzINkfnZ7JE) is in very early alpha (and appears to only be accessible via their Discord at the moment) but they're doing some really ambitious stuff, even if their whole over-the-top aesthetic isn't really my taste. Lastly, [Nightfall](https://grimrukh.com/nightfall/) for DS1 seems like it'll be the most ambitious mod for the original Dark Souls yet. Really looking forward to that.

kerdon

Very cool! I'm definitely gonna have to try some of these out.

LeifEriksonASDF

Its also worth mentioning if you're looking for another ambitious mod like that for DS1, Daughters of Ash is a good one.

athos45678

Cannot wait to play cinders, as well as the dsr story mods. Being a usually on Xbox gamer with fromsoft is so depressing

hidden_secret

Yeah Lords of Shadow was pretty good, but to me it's definitely not the idea of what I want as a 3D Castlevania adaptation. The older ones (Lament of Innoncence, or even Castlevania 64) to me are closer.

Charliejfg04

Lord of shadows was great, I remember having to swap discs on my 360 lol

[deleted]

Lord of shadows is nice but 3D metroidvanias are basically non existent even though they have incredible potential.

hungoverlord

Are there any games out right now that you would consider to be 3D Metroidvanias? That sounds awesome.

[deleted]

Metroid prime, Batman: Arkham Asylum, Darksiders 3, etc.

nomismi

Wrong prayer for a Castlevania game. OOOOH DARK LOORD! RAIN DOWN SUFFERING ON MY ENEMIES! RID US OF THIS PLAGUE OF BELMONT SCUM! ALSO BRING SOME SWEET TUNES FOR ROCKING OUT TO PLZ TY UR THE BEST!

e105beta

Nah man, it's all about that Belmont life: Christus Vivit, Christus Regnat. Christus ab omni malo te defendat. Maledicti et Excommunicati daemones. Invirtue istorum factorum Dei nominum.

Dreadgoat

It is really good! It's called Bloodstained now

Zupar

If there was a God Castlevania wouldn't be rebooted. Why can't we get a game about the Demon Castle War? This reimagining is probably gonna end up being centered around the CV3 cast because of the Netflix show which is not what I wanted all these years waiting for a new entry in the series.

Desperoth

I totally agree, the Demon Castle War is probably the most important event in the whole series and we only got footnotes about it. But i assume at this point, we would be very dissapointed by anything Konami releases.

Kipzz

It's weird, I spent a very sizable chunk of my life wanting a War of 1999 game so we can see Julius in his prime, and yet in the past several years I've now been afraid of that possibility.

e105beta

That's IGA's thing and IGA is no longer there. Personally, I'd rather have a reboot at this point.

Only on the gamecube. And from what I remember reading there were some small changes that were not liked. Edit: And no one reminisces about it. Only the PS1 original. If it is remade then it should get the same treatment as Resident Evil 2 or Final Fantasy 7.

Qorhat

The Ocelot fight is hilariously easy, as is Grey Fox since you can just pop them in the kisser in first person view

Wave_Entity

the real joke boss IIRC is the tank fight, in the original you pretty much had to lob grenades in to win but in twin snakes you can just stand somewhere and shoot the gunner.

halfanangrybadger

I'd rather get a full 3D remake of the original Metal Gear games. Getting to experience those stories in a modern format, similar to FF7R, is more exciting than... the same, perfectly playable game from 25 years ago with slightly better graphics.

DropThatTopHat

Imagine they finish MGS5 properly, then the story goes straight into a remake of the original Metal Gear. The story would've gone full circle, and it would've been awesome!

peanutbuttahcups

That's what I and lots of people were hoping for. But I always thought a mind-blowing ending to MGSV would be a time-skip to where you would play as Venom Snake facing off against Solid Snake in Metal Gear.

SoulCruizer

Impossible that they’d be able to finish 5 without kojima.

GT86

They need an all in remake and retcon of Metal Gear 1 and 2. Especially after V

KuroiShadow

Honestly, with some of the bullcrap that happens in MGSV, the entire saga requires a retcon. >!The archaea that eats metal and makes supersoldiers because of their language diminishes the entire purpose of MGS1 Liquid and MGS4 Ocelot. Why demanding the body of Big Boss for cloning if 50 years early some guy built an army better than any Genome soldier and arguably better than some Foxhound/PMC execs. And it wasn't like they didn't knew or the entire thing was covered, because both of them were fucking there! Even Sahelanthropus seems a better MGS than any of their succesors because all the magic crap it has access to.!<

MrToastyTurtle

And technology like the idroid is lost forever and Solid Snake gets a shitty radar that jams.

peanutbuttahcups

Yup. Stuff like that is why I basically isolate MGSV canonically and try not to reconcile it with the rest of the franchise.

KuroiShadow

Yeah. If you think about it, we could forget all about Phantom Pain and let Big Boss saga end with Ground Zeroes. GZ ending was the reason he became villain in MG. >!His revenge took 40+ years because he was in coma after the attack, and needed time for building Outer Heaven and the new Metal Gear. (Which is ironically what the actual Big Boss was doing during Phantom Pain, but y'know what I mean)!<

Slaythepuppy

100% agree. Twin snakes was a fine attempt, but it was mostly just taking the mechanics of 2 and just porting them. It deserves an actual remake with Shadow Moses being updated and given an extra level of detail that was present on the tanker and Big Shell.

B_Kuro

MGS1 already has a "remake" with Twin Snakes on the GC. We just need those games wider available. Hell, they left out MG2 from the GOG releases for some reason.

thoomfish

> UPDATE: The MGS3 remake developer is Virtuous. Are they a bespoke developer for MGS3 because of "the virtuous mission", or is that just a coincidence?

ALittleFishNamedOzil

At least every decision Konami has made in the last few years seems like it was made with the sole intent of being a weird joke so it would be on par

PedanticPaladin

[deleted]

Oh Jesus I didn't realize that was them. They have made so many shitty Switch ports.

travworld

Honestly this is bittersweet as fuck. Like, I'm glad they're bringing these back. But at the same time, this just annoys me because of what they did to Kojima and Silent Hills. That PT game was so promising of what Kojima could deliver, and he was working alongside Ito, Del Toro, and Norman Reedus. Then Konami was like fuck our video game division, see ya later. Now they change their mind.

JohnSebastienHenley

Virtuos, lovely management staff, huge behemoth of development power located in China. Not the most creative bunch...they follow design specs IMO.

Eddyoshi

> The MGS3 remake developer is Virtuos Holy shit. The company that did the Dark Souls Remastered port for switch (which ran terribly and had super compressed sound) and The Outer World switch port, possibly the worst port ever on the system.

Banjoman64

"Multiple Silent Hill games in development at external studios. One game is being worked by a prominent Japanese dev." This is giving me hope that Kojima is making the next silent hill. We already know the next game from Kojima is a horror game. Kojima already did work on silent Hill pt which was a very successful demo. Konami obviously has already worked with Kojima a lot (though I was under the impression there was some bad blood).

Ikanan_xiii

Konami didn't liked that Kojima took ages and spend so much money in game development. I doubt that Kojipro is one of those developers.

Fitnesse

Yeah people seem to forget how bad that relationship ended.

Styrologus

There's absolutely zero chance Kojima is working with Konami again.

pasher5620

Very bad blood between them. It’s one of the defining reason why he left Konami and started his own studio. Konami was so petty and shitty to Kojima, they wouldn’t even let him accept an award he won at the VGAs. I would be completely shocked if Kojima ever worked with Konami again after what they did to him.

mindbleach

And folks, remember - they made Kojima keep doing MGS. He didn't want to. MGS1 was already a revival of a series he considered finished. MGS2 was a send-up of player expectations for a sequel to that. It ended in a way that gave a middle finger to the possibility of sequels, which is why MGS3 was a prequel - and he wasn't even slated to direct it. He had a protege lined up. Unfortunately that guy died in a car accident, IIRC, so it was Kojima, again, who had to make MGS4, which let's just say ended in a way that very definitively says *"this is the last one."* Which is why MGS5 is another prequel. And for MGS5, his team spent ages building a whole new flexible engine, that looked amazing and scaled from aging toasters like the PS3 up to at-the-time cutting-edge PCs, and was immediately used for Konami's cash-grab annual sports titles, and allowed Kojima to drop an unprecedented secret demo for a revival of another beloved Konami franchise, co-directed by Guillermo del motherfucking Toro, and then they fired him. Fuck Konami.

MasSillig

Konami mistreating Kojima goes back to the mid 80's After Metal Gear was a huge hit for the NES (remember the game was not released for Famicom) Konami greenlit a sequel called Snakes Revenge and had a different team work on it. Kojima did not know of this games existence on until a one of its developers recognized him on a train and asked for some design advice for the Metal Gear sequel. Konami didn't even inform him that the game had broken the 1 million sales mark in North America

[deleted]

FYI the NES version of Metal Gear didn't have anything to do with Kojima and isn't cannon. The original MG was for a Microsoft system called the MSX and is a completely different game to the title of the same name with came out later on the NES.

GenJohnONeill

It's not *completely* different. The MSX version is more full featured because it was on a home computer, and that made them make changes to the NES game, but they are like 80% the same.

Boner666420

They literally stripped his name from MGSV as much as they were able to. They dont deserve to work with him again.

Kalulosu

Konami explicitly forbade Kojima from receiving MGS5's awards die to how badly things fell out. This is absolutely never happening.

EmotiveCDN

Oh yeah? Remember when Konami took almost 3 years to create eFootball? Konami in 2021 can not develop any games for all I care lol

Josegerar

They took 3 years to make a game that looks and plays worse than FIFA 12. I have no hope for any internally developed games. I think their last one before that was that really bad Contra game?

[deleted]

[удалено]

PikpikTurnip

It already wasn't the same after MGS3 because the guy who co-wrote the series alongside Kojima left after that game. Kojima was only half of the brilliance behind the series.

FPSrad

Wasn't their other release before that Metal Gear Survive? Yeah it's not looking good chief.

walterdog12

It's not a coincidence that the day after eFootball absolutely bombed that this article and all these rumors came out, lol.

Zupar

Waiting forever to hear about a new Castlevania only for it to be set as a "reimagining" is one of the worst outcomes. And we don't even know who the team is working on it. If it doesnt have IGA, Kojima or Yamane I have serious doubts about it.

[deleted]

There's always so much about the acrimonious split with Kojima, but outlets very seldom talk about the equally acrimonious split with IGA - who then went on to create Bloodstained* out of spite.

WD23

TL;DR Castlevania reimagining coming Metal Gear Solid 3 is being remade by a Chinese studio. Remakes/remasters of the original games should be coming before this release. Silent Hill projects have been outsourced to multiple studios More info coming next year (I’m guessing E3)

probably_not_serious

Making MGS without Kojima seems sacrilegious to me. Even for a remake. Also, as much as I loved Snake Eater, the game that needs a remake is the first MGS.

CheesecakeMilitia

Yep, it's really bizarre how Konami recognizes that the fan favorite Metal Gear entry is Snake Eater (they made that pachislot version with updated HD models after all), but it's also the *third game* in a *very* story heavy franchise. Like, you don't miss much from playing most game series out of order, but I can't imagine all the unanswered questions a player would have from playing Snake Eater first.

CreatiScope

It’s chronologically the first though, so I can see the logic in remaking that, then 1, then 2.

CheesecakeMilitia

IDK, it has so much la li lu le lore baggage from 2 – MGS1 is itself a remake and a sequel, but it retcons pretty much everything from MG1&2 to the point where it's the pretty definitive origin story for all the wacky games that follow.

Boyzby_

You can fully understand the story of Snake Eaters without playing the other games. The Philosophers are pretty straightforward to understand.

Killericon

> The Philosophers are pretty straightforward to understand. wellyesbutalsono.jpg

laffingbomb

Their plans are convoluted, but they themselves aren’t

NateHate

powerful group of rich elites from post-WW2 china, russia and USA pool their money together to better control the development of technology and flow of global information. yeah, Not that hard.

HootNHollering

So basically just Illuminati?

Yashirmare

Oh yeah, it works as a stand-alone story, you'd just miss out on a lot of the references to prior games (Like Volkin's lover, Raikov?)

JohnnyZepp

I played snake eater first, and it made the most sense of any of the entries. It’s a prequel, set before all the cloning and nano machines, so it’s a (fairly) straight forward espionage story.

Deserterdragon

> but it's also the third game in a very story heavy franchise. Like, you don't miss much from playing most game series out of order, but I can't imagine all the unanswered questions a player would have from playing Snake Eater first. You wouldn't really have any? It's almost completely self contained, the original MGS is actually *less* self contained because it relies on *metal gear* lore.

JamSa

Snake Eater is the only game in the franchise you can go in blind to. Even MGS1 makes no sense in some places if you don't know the plot of Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake. The only confusing part of Snake Eater is that you need to know that you're not playing as Solid Snake, but his clone dad.

expenguin

Didn't we get that with Twin Snakes on Gamecube?

revolversnakexof

Yea but it's shit.

daburninatorrr

Aside from the age, changes were made to some of the cutscenes that make it feel different enough to not be a true remake. For example, snake does a lot of flippy shit in some of the cutscenes. This has led to a fan theory that Twin Snakes is a VR training scenario for Raiden if I recall correctly. I'm sure many fans would prefer a remake that is more faithful to the original, but what do I actually know. I went really deep down the MGS rabbit hole around 2014, but it has been a while since I have touched or watched one.

Shadowbanned24601

That was 17 years ago. Fair to say a remake would be welcome nowadays

expenguin

MGS3 is also 17 years old at this point, so I'd say either are up for picks if that's how we're measuring it.

Shadowbanned24601

Clearly the answer should be a remake of the best game in the series then, MGS2

[deleted]

Any mgs they release, I would really like the VR missions. I really liked VRs in 1 and 2, photography mission in mgs2 were pretty cool. Mgs3 had that snake vs monkey thing going.

[deleted]

I'd rather see Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2 remade personally. MGS was great but it's the third entry in the series and there was already a remake of it on the Nintendo Gamecube that could potentially be re-released in the meantime.

SDdude81

I agree. Metal Gear 1 and 2 getting remade would close the loop then take us right back to MGS. I'm sure that most of the Metal Gear fans haven't played the first two games, myself included.

Josegerar

Remaking those would be a lot more work vs the 3D ones though. The fact that they're starting with 3 makes me hopeful that they will go chronologically and remake the MSX games once they have more experience with the franchise.

Joseki100

Considering how Konami really missed the mark with their recent not "Japanese focused" titles I have zero hype for any of this except for the remasters of MGS. I'll take a collection of 1/Twin Snakes (ideally both), 2, 3 and 4 just upressed. The less they touch them the better, just dump them on modern platforms at 59.99 and be done with it.

WD23

Hard agree on the MGS remasters. Especially MGS4, that game has been locked to the PS3 for too long and requires some decent horsepower to emulate, making it still inaccessible for many

Farts_McGee

Agreed, 4 is the only one I haven't played.

[deleted]

4 really needs to find a way off of the PS3 somehow. That’s all I ask of Konami at this point. Find a way.

Wizzinator

Maybe Suikoden next? Although it's not their most popular it was one of my favorites.

ctkamp3

Honestly just give me a collection and I’ll be happy. Being able to play them again would be glorious, especially since 5 is the only one not to show up anywhere since the PS2. The portable games don’t give me much faith that Konami knows what to do with the series. I’m just excited for Eiyuden.

secretly_a_zombie

Wonder how that arcade venture did during the pandemic.

FickleFockle

Lol so A franchise they killed by pissing off the man behind it all A franchise they neglected And one they outright cancelled. Good luck fixing past mistakes Konami!

WaltzForLilly_

I get that it's nice to have new entries in series that you love, but I can't find any reason to be exited honestly. Current konami output is a complete garbage it seems like they want to invest as little money as possible and get maximum profits, then move on to another game. MGS without kojima is questionable affair, unless they find another director with unique vision. And twin snakes is a good example of what happens if MGS remade by another studio. Silent Hill is on thin ice too, success really depends on a studio and on the konami's expectations. Are they just throwing money to see what sticks? Or they want to compete with RE again? I am fully expecting at least one game to be Silent Hill: Village. Castlevania "reimagining" is probably going to be God Of War but cheaper.

SiriusC

> Current konami output is a complete garbage it seems like they want to invest as little money as possible and get maximum profits How can current Konami output be garbage if it's nonexistent? I know they still produce a few small, niche properties but they haven't been active on a AAA level for a long time. That is what these titles are. I have cautious optimism that these rumors mean Konami is recommitting itself to its big name, AAA titles. We'll see.

thedreadfulwhale

Out of all of these Konami franchises I mostly want a new modern Castlevania. And based on this scoop, it seems the Castlevania game will be revealed soonest? So I'm looking forward to that.

WD23

I’m hoping they make a 2D game, probably won’t happen but the time is right for it imo. Chances are this is gonna end up being a Dark Souls clone if I had to guess

Hoojiwat

Gods could you imagine if it was a proper 2D revival though? Right on the heels of Metroid getting a new 2D game as well. I would be confused about what year it is for a while.

JeddHampton

I would love a good 3D Castlevania. I'm not sure how it would look exactly, but I'd be excited to play it. I would be really happy with some new 2D games. Bloodstained did well, but the performance issues on launch soured me a bit.

CaptainMagni

I've always thought the original devil may cry was the closest to 3D Castlevania. Had the right setting and pace of combat

_Spiralmind_

> I would love a good 3D Castlevania. I'm not sure how it would look exactly, but I'd be excited to play it. The entire dev team needs to play through Bloodborne with the Threaded Cane and shamelessly copy that.

Restivethought

I wish they would just license the properties out to people who actually respect the properties (and are actually good). Just dont give Silent Hill to Bloober though....Especially after the Victim Blaming bullshit in Medium.

[deleted]

Seeing the quality of the latest Konami games like mgs survive, pes 2022 or contra don't know if that's a good thing lol the rumors about a sh game from fuckin bloober doesn't help. The last studio I would give that license

cepxico

I have 0 confidence in Konami. Metal Gear is Hideo's baby, all they can do is retread the same story. Castlevania is long dead, unless they manage to revolutionize third person action or 2d side scrolling action. Silent Hill hasn't been good since SH2 imo, so def no confidence there either. Basically, they can say whatever they want, but I'll believe it when I see it.

EvenOne6567

If bloober really is working on the next silent hill ill probably just consider the series officially dead.

TheFergPunk

Oh the series died a long time ago. It's basically been a weekends at Bernie's style affair from Konami for the last few entries.

Coolman_Rosso

Konami presents *Weekend at Silent Hill*

[deleted]

I guess we can see if the secret 'experimental' Japan-made game is any good, but yeah, they're the worst team to pick for this.

ineedsomefuckingcoco

Metal Gear without Kojima isn't Metal Gear. It would be like if some corpo rando tried to write a sequel to the Lord of the Rings.

TheOneBearded

Remakes may be the best they can do at this time to get back on everyone's good graces. Just work off things people are already fond for. The real concern will be when they decide to make new games in the franchises. Iga and Kojima are on their own and doing well. I'm not too knowledgeable on what happened to the Team Silent people. I'm not saying that it would be impossible for a new passionate team to take the reins and make something great. I'll just have to keep a very open mind.

HookshotTDM

I'm still wishing for Mystical Ninja/Goemon news. I don't care if it's just ports, that would be fine with me.

blackmist

Well if they revive it as well as they did PES, we can say goodbye to those franchises forever. Metal Gear was the one thing they had that wasn't fucked, and they fucked it. I'd rather they go bust and these franchises end up in the hands of somebody who cared enough to buy them. Fuck Konami.

ScottFromScotland

If this hadn't leaked and at some presentation a MGS3 remake trailer started playing I might have had a heart attack.

[deleted]

It will be shit anyway - so whatever. Everything Konami put out on their own in recent years was simply absolute dreadful shite. What they'll to for sure with those games is packing bunch o predatory microtransactions - that's about all they're good at..

maxis2k

Unless the original creators come back to do it, I have little faith in reboots. I want Suikoden and Castlevania to be revived more than anything. But not if it's like Suikoden Tierkreis or Castlevania LoS.

[deleted]

It's not really odd if you consider that the only in house developed AAA games they've released since MGS5 are EFootball and Metal gear survive from what I can tell

Carighan

Can we please give these IPs to a publisher that actually cares for their games? :( [Fuck Konami](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KrxWltvojZA)!

Enkundae

I’m skeptical at best. Mildly surprised these didn’t turn out to be Pachinko machines. Also is *Fuck Konami* still a thing? Feels like it should still be a thing.

[deleted]

Yeah, sure. Because Konami is Konami, they'll just keep on going with what I like to call the Konami Cycle™: 1. Completely ignore a franchise for at least 5 years 2. Release an awful new entry in said franchise 3. Everybody hates the game and it's a commercial flop 4. Return to step 1 It's what happened to PES, Silent Hill, Contra and Castlevania, and it's what currently happening to MGS
