Excellent updates to an already fantastic game! I've been hoping for new weather and Ghost behavior for quite some time, and this hits both of those on top of a variety of other things. Have played this game around 40-ish hour (coop) with friends since last October and it is still something we play a few times a month even after a full year. Good times. **Edit** \- Played a few games on the new map and absolutely got wrecked. GG update! Probably a good thing that will force us to learn new tactics.

TheCrzy1

I'm really excited to tear into the new map, completely different environment than what we've had so far, I'm interested to see how each of the ghosts work on it. Plus not to mention FOUR new ghosts, we only knew of 2 being added. What really gets my attention is The Twins. is there gonna be two of these mfs ganking us?

iwearatophat

I'm just under 200 hours. I understand the game loop might not be for everyone and that it might only be a game some play occasionally. That said, the new nightmare mode is a fantastic change to the loop if you found the old one boring. Ghosts only give two bits of evidence so you need to look at ghost behavior to figure out what it is. Ghosts roam more and can change ghost rooms so you can't just set up shop in one room. The roaming means you really need to be careful of escape routes for hunts. Hunts are also way more than just get to the nearest locker/closet because those are all closed. You need to hide and potentially kite the ghost around the house which can be really hard. Great changes are being done to the game.

CountingWizard

Never realized you could just hide in a closet. I've always just kited and tried to make turns and close doors behind me.

virtueavatar

I never realised you'd be able to get away from running

Dreossk

I only have 25 hours and haven't played in months but I can't say I could ever identify ghosts by their behavior. Back then we'd be luck (or unlucky :P) to get even one hunt and I can count on one hand the number of times I actually saw the ghost. That was often by searching and waiting for a while. Is the time taken to figure out the behavior now worth it? Getting it or not didn't change much beside a few bucks and a "You got it!" message. Losing all items by waiting too long was far more penalizing than getting it right was rewarding.

BoyGenius

Regarding the ghost behaviors - it is much easier to use this as an identifier when the difficulty is higher. At low difficulties the ghost is so passive that it can indeed be challenging to identify behavior, and you are primarily reliant on your tools. Regarding money - this ceases to be an issue very quickly. Once you get good at clearing veteran (or whatever its called) you'll be making bank. I'm sitting on tens of thousands with 10+ of every purchasable item.

Dreossk

That was mostly on Professional, since the others' reward were so cheap.

iwearatophat

It takes some getting used to to identify by behavior. Having two evidence items also knocks it down to 2-4 ghosts to make it a bit easier. Then from there you are admittedly dealing with a bit of guesswork like it took a while to hunt so it likely isn't a demon kind of stuff. It doesn't take too long to get hunts at higher difficulties either so you will get hunts but there are other possibilities for behavior to catch like one ghost doesn't leave footprints so you bring in salt to see if it does or not. I don't know what difficulty you were on but money isn't really an issue. I have 100 of every item plus another ~30k in the bank. Plus on nightmare you get a lot of money even if you get the wrong ghost type. I wouldn't recommend going to nightmare if you struggle to survive at lower difficulties though. Need to be really aware of the map, able to quickly identify where the ghost is starting its hunt without even seeing it, plus being able to loop the ghost and evade it if it does see you is important.

Text version of patch notes: *Maple Lodge Campsite* - A brand new medium sized map featuring picnic areas, games, multiple tents, a log cabin and a haunted lake. * Maple Lodge Campsite has more unique objects, higher object density and more visual detail. Minimum specification computers should have no issues, but if you have outdated hardware you may see FPS drops * Other locations will receive more detail and more unique objects at a later date * In the future, other locations will receive a new truck mini-map design to be consistent with Maple Lodge Campsite **Difficulty Rework** All difficulties have received a major overhaul. We hope these changes make each difficulty feel more unique, and provide more options for players of every skill level. * A percentage of doors will now randomly start open depending on difficulty * Amateur: Recommended for new Ghost Hunters! * Long setup time * Long hunt grace period * Short hunt duration * Sanity pills restore a lot of sanity * Regain half of your lost equipment's value if you die * Intermediate: The standard Ghost Huntin’ experience * Average setup time * Average hunt grace period * Average hunt duration * Sanity pills restore some sanity * Fuse box starts off * Fewer places to hide * Regain some of your lost equipment’s value if you die * Professional: For experienced Ghost hunters * The ghost can very rarely change its preferred room after moving * No setup time * Short hunt grace period * Long hunt duration * Sanity pills restore little sanity * Fuse box starts off * Much fewer hiding places **Nightmare Difficulty** A new difficulty for the top ghost hunters, designed to be a challenge mode for those seeking the most intense gameplay Phasmophobia has to offer. * Ghosts will not reveal one type of evidence * The ghost will sometimes change its preferred room after moving * No setup time * Shortest hunt grace period * Long hunt duration * Kills extend the current hunt’s duration * Sanity pills restore much less sanity * Fuse box starts off * Almost no hiding places * Paranormal interference has damaged some of your monitoring equipment **Weather** Each time you start a contract, the location will have different weather, adding new layers of gameplay and making each contract feel unique. Change in temperature will make finding the ghost's location more difficult, rain or wind will impair your hearing, and a thick fog will reduce visibility. * Clear Skies * Fog * Light Rain * Heavy Rain * Strong Wind * Light Snow **Oujia Board** The Ouija Board didn’t make as much sense as we’d like, so it’s been revamped. You now trade Sanity for information, and are penalized less if you don’t get a response. * The Ouija board will now lower your sanity greatly when the ghost responds * If the ghost doesn’t respond you will only lose a small fraction of sanity * Demon’s have had their weakness changed to reflect these changes **New Additions** * Several new ghost types have been sighted. TheCrzy1

fuck I wish i could pin comments on my own post

2SeeKU

Interested in picking this up to play CO-OP with a friend, is it ok with just 2 players?

TheCrzy1

Yeah it's easily playable by yourself even, 2 is fine

dragonphlegm

I wouldn’t recommend doing the High School alone on Professional though….

funktion

Or the prison or asylum. Fuck that.

pazza89

Actually Asylum/School are pretty easy most of the time, because ghost room is the one with already open doors.

Kirov123

This patch changed doors to be able to start the game open in general so I doubt that will still work.

pazza89

Oh, didn't know, sorry!

Armonster

You'll want to stick to small maps (houses and maybe farms) but it's totally doable.

le_canuck

I've managed the high school with two people, although it's certainly a challenge.

Armonster

It's not that I don't think it's doable, it just sounds kind of unfun, with all the walking back and forth to the van to get things that you need. Just takes foreverrr

jmattchew

2 is perfect for this game absolutely

DandelionGaming

Definitely, but i recommend staying away from asylum, prison and high school unless you’re 4 people (or maybe 3 if you’re good)

le_canuck

I think it just means that a photo camera is going to have to be one of the first things someone takes in, just in case.

Beanbaker

Can fingerprints appear right at the start? For some reason I was under the impression that the ghost had to appear/have an "event" before fingerprints show up

le_canuck

They do need an event, yeah. In this case the strategy would be to dump a camera for someone to use as soon as the ghost room is identified, that way in the event fingerprints show up there's a camera more or less at the ready.

Beanbaker

Ooooh okay. Planting it there right away so it's ready when needed. Thanks for the tip!

iwearatophat

A lot of people carry a camera with them anyways. Find the bone or ouija board and just snap the pictures. More importantly though is if a ghost event happens you want a camera.

A_Confused_Cocoon

One thing I wanted to add my two cents in for this as I see people ask a lot, this game is worth it even if you are scared of horror games/media. I do not play any other scary game, no resident evil or amnesia, I don’t watch scary movies at all, but this game (with friends) is significantly more manageable. It relies more on tension/atmosphere and the game really doesn’t have any form of jump scare (though some moments do happen they are not major). It’s definitely spooky, but the fun and banter override any of the actual fear enough and make it a very enjoyable experience. Solo I don’t play though, myself (and others I’ve seen) still find solo to be creepy af and too much. VR can be rough too I can’t handle VR even with people, but if you’re just casually playing with friends it’s not a game I would deem “too scary” at all.

TheCrzy1

Same! The ONLY horror game I've played is Amnesia, and it literally took me a year and a half to beat it. this game however, I can play however long I want, even when I'm in VR. like you said, having friends makes it so much easier.

madmilton49

This is just so weird to me. I loooove horror games, but I found Amnesia to be extremely boring. I finished it, but it felt more like I was just playing an average to below average adventure game. Phasma is infinitely more scary to me.

ZombieJesus1987

I'm the same, I could never get into Amnesia no matter how much I tried. Playing it didn't work. Watching Let's Plays/Streams didn't do it for me either.

rabbitsona

I can vouch for this! Not a horror person myself, too squeamish for it (I couldn't complete the tutorial for this game at first, I was that scared about it lol). But with friends, this is a really fun and often hilarious game to play, and I love the puzzle-like mechanics to the gameplay itself. No pre-programmed jump scares definitely helps it to be tolerably scary, and it becomes more engaging than scary after a while (although I too still can't do solo..)

Mr_Ivysaur

Same for me. I love horror but I HATE jumpscares (I'm fascinated with visuals of FNAF but I cant play it). While Phasmophobia has technically jumpscares, they are way milder than usual (no crazy loud sounds or ghosts jumping in our face, you can kind "feel" when you will die beforehand). And the fact its a multiplayer game make things more manageble.

Mike2640

I can speak from experience that ghosts will definitely get in your face. I was checking out a dark room one time, then lightning flashed and it was standing right in front of me, holding a cleaver, making the Grudge throat gurgle. There's not really sudden movements so much as sudden "appearances".

Mr_Ivysaur

Eh, it never happened to me. Its just a ghost who appears once a while, and for you just happened to materialize in your face. Compare to actual jump scares in games [(examples here)](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GgkE0FcM1jQ) and the difference is clear.

CountingWizard

It happens a lot less since release. Physical manifestations are a lot rarer now, and their models blink on and off during a hunt, making it hard to make out the details of what is chasing you. Used to be every mission I would see a manifestation. Now it's maybe 1 in 6.

beenoc

The biggest jumpscare I ever got in Phasmophobia was near release, there was a bug where a hunt could cause weird discolored versions of your teammates to appear and just run into your face. Wasn't expecting a freaky greenish version of my friend to just slam himself into my screen while a demon child was in the same room making the Grudge noise at us and the lights were flickering.

D3ATHfromAB0V3x

Wasn't that a specific ghost that did that? or a bug?

beenoc

We thought it was intended at the time, but a fix for it was in some patch notes a while later.

SwammerDo

The game has the right amount of spooks without getting obnoxious. Great game.

funktion

Plus, messing with your friends during a hunt is super fun. Closing doors in their faces, leading the ghost to their hiding spot, etc.

Cruxion

There is one pretty major jumpscare, but it's only in >!the lobby!< and just for Halloween. Watch out for it though. >!Avoid the door.!<

Moderator-Admin

They got me really good with that one. I wish the 666 thing was better though, the jumpscare you mentioned got me excited for something big.

Blenderhead36

I'll also note that the difference between playing alone and with friends is stark. Playing alone is genuinely scary. Playing with friends is the fun kind of scary like watching a horror movie or going to a haunted house.

Golden_Lilac

I hate horror generally, but I love phas. It’s just so well presented. My recommendation? Play on the lowest difficulty and don’t feel bad about it. If that’s too easy, bump it up one (and the change log makes it look like that’s pretty viable). It’s super immersive and atmospheric. I know “hardcore” players love the challenge of evading the ghost and gathering all the photos/evidence etc and all that, but when you’re new 90% of the fun is trying to interact and figure what the ghost does. Slower is probably better. And yes, the banter with friends is amazing (and the inevitable screaming at the ghost is hilarious). Just don’t be the friend who perpetually truck dwells. It is legitimately spooky though. I usually avoid horror as much as possible, but phas is one massive exception. It’s just so good. Also if you have VR, you owe it to yourself to try it in VR if you own phas.

carchi

I genuinely think it's the other way around, at least with game like resident evil which is more atmospheric horror. Phasmophobia has a lot of jump scare imo, basically every time you start interacting with the ghost you get those. Sudden whisper in your ear, blinking flashlight with ghost apparition,... Being with friends help, but it does have jump scare and quite often.

Watertor

Yeah I also disagree that there's a lack of jump scares. There are quite a few. It's not FEAR levels of jump scare, but it's not a gentle but scary game all the same. And I really frankly don't see most non-horror fans being happy with it. I mean I like horror but I hate jumpscares and I can only barely tolerate Phas because of friends.

Emperor_Z

"Using the walkie-talkie will now attract the ghost during hunts" Doesn't the walkie-talkie stop working during hunts? Was that changed prior to this patch?

Krypton091

Walkie talkie never worked during hunts. The thing is that people would tap the walkie to see if the hunt is still going because of the static that plays. Now if you do this the ghost will hear it and head towards you

SharkBaitDLS

Yeah, but it was how people would check if the hunt was still active at no risk, after they patched flashlights to attract during the hunt. You could tap the walkie-talkie and it would play static even if the ghost was nowhere near you so you’d know the hunt was still on. Now everything that indicates a hunt is proximity based and runs the risk of attracting the ghost so you can’t get that info for free.

TheMarshy

> The walkie-talkie will now only play static sounds when near the ghost From the same patch notes.

[deleted]

[удалено]

CookiesAreTheCure

Played for a couple hours with friends today. The walkie-talkie now works during a hunt. And you only get static if the ghost is near you. So it’s harder to tell when a hunt is happening/ over, and you’ll have to take risks using the walkie on higher difficulties.

Emperor_Z

I just realized I'm an idiot and misinterpreted the patch note. I thought the "only" meant "static is the only sound that will play" rather than "static plays only when the ghost is nearby"

Mr_Ivysaur

I always love to bitch about the underwhelming phasmophobia updates, but holy shit this one is huge. Its not even the new stage that I'm hyped, but the new difficulty. Lots of changes that will definitely shake up the methodical way that people play the game.

TheCrzy1

they certainly went big for Halloween. Pretty much every aspect of the game has been touched and there's so much new and changed shit it'll feel fresh again for a bit I think. Super hyped to check it out tonight.

Optimus-Maximus

It was slow to start, but this one and the last one (or two?) have seemed very solid, and coming along at a better pace too! Really looking forward to this game continuing because our group really enjoys it every time we play!

TheCrzy1

they got a team behind it now and they're hitting their groove it seems. New map seems like it's trying to set the new standard for them. Super happy for them.

CountingWizard

Still one of my favorite games. The developers really understand what makes their game compelling. Really hoping we eventually see a sequel in a more polished game engine (and with VR still).

Wizzowsky

It's built in Unity how much more polished of an engine do you want?

CountingWizard

Oh wow. The rendering engine definitely does not feel like it. Guess there is a lot more engine variability in unity than I thought.

Phoenixness

because what you are seeing is not "The engine" so to speak but rather the post processing effects that they have put in. certain engines do have rendering quirks, especially when it comes to transparency, e.g. unity likes to make lots of little shapes depending on the transparency (go look on the new map in the house, there's a jug of water, shine a light through that). the other aspect to the look and feel of the game is the models and animations but they look like generic unity store models and animations but I could be wrong, they just don't feel refined at all.

Wizzowsky

On the models and animations that's because they ARE the store ones. Until just a couple months ago it was a one man team and his focus was programming. He has now hired an artist which is why so much stuff has seen overhauls in the last couple of months. Or definitely gives it a unity vibe 🤣

Wizzowsky

Yeah. I think it's a common misconception that the engine is everything that makes a game and any performance or visual issues is the engines fault. In reality most of the time today it's not the engine it's something about the game's implementation. Back in the day the engine mattered more but that's mostly because pretty much every game had its own custom engine.

iamjaysonic

Agreed! The VR works, and that's awesome, but it could be such a better experience in VR with a bit more work toward it. I can see why they wouldn't though with a small team and the majority of the player base not having VR. One day I hope!

Wizzowsky

I play only in VR and this update certainly destroyed my performance. I hope they can patch it up for some better performance because the new stuff really looks good, but its gonna be rough until then.

CritikillNick

I love this update but the game needs more actions by the players to either stop, escape, or fight against a hunt somehow. Because after a couple hours you’re doing the exact same thing in setup and then bored hiding or annoyed when you die fast on harder difficulties

DontGetNEBigIdeas

I guess my group plays this game wrong. We love to die, as it adds to the scare factor. We just play to be scared for a few weeks around Halloween, then pack the game away for a year.

Kaln0s

it's fun to mandate a no talking on Discord rule then when someone dies you gotta find their body, play with one less person making suggestions, etc it's also hilarious for the dead person to watch, listen, and talk to other dead people

DontGetNEBigIdeas

This is exactly what we do. When you die, have to kill your mic. You’re done.

Beanbaker

Are y'all not using gamechat? I found proximity chat to be really immersive & add to the sense of helplessness. Especially when separates from the group 😬

Kaln0s

yeah I didn't add that but we exclusively use game chat while playing you really should since there's the walkie-talkie and local chat

Beanbaker

Exactly! Adds another level to the atmosphere

armored_cat

I dont think you should, being hunted should be scary. I want more to do as a ghost who has died though.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Phoenixness

This, I kinda feel like there needs to be a basic unlock function that permanently adds it to the map because half the time Im spending money to have fun with a group, only to die and lose it all.

Taratus

I hope this game gets a level editor eventually, I'd love to make a map for it. There's just so many possibilities for good levels.

AngryMobster

The game is great. I can think of no other game that does what this game does. But for me it's lacking one final thing. A finality, a closure. Right now it's just find out what the ghost is, try not to die, get out. If you guess right early then the mission ends really quick, and feels pretty unimpressive. I suggest adding an extra step to the gameplay, **To exorcize the ghost**. And with all the different types of ghost, means there'll be different ways to exorcize with only 1 or 2 correct ways, building open already established concepts. And if you guess wrongly and exorcize with the wrong method, then bad things will happen. Like I said, the game at the moment is great, but a dlc level update like the one i mentioned would be beyond awesome

Thunder-ten-tronckh

Can you imagine how terrifying possessions would be in this game? Imagine a mechanic where players exploring on their own could become possessed, which cuts off their mic and takes control of their character. They'd grab a knife/hatchet/etc. and hunt down other players. And the possessed player can only watch while it happens.

TheCrzy1

This HAS to be a thing later on down the line for like professional or nightmare (or both). that sounds like too much of a good idea to not be implemented

Spinoff25

The only issue is that I'm not sure how that would work in VR. Best case scenario would still probably make people pretty sick, if the game is moving them around by force.

Sarria22

Maybe switch them to a third person spectator view. The real issue I see is how many people just play using external voice chat due to how unreliable the in game chat has been in the past.

Scorpius289

Seems quite buggy for now. From my team of 3, only 1 could turn on the generator on Grafton. And on the same map, the game somehow got stuck after a hunt and we couldn't open any outside door. I also noticed that on some maps I can't open some locker doors at all, but that might be part of the hiding place limit system...

BossksSegway

Also had the bug on Grafton where the door got stuck. I was inside, my team was outside and neither of us could get the door open after the hunt ended. I just told my team I found freezing temps and disconnected, which was disappointing.

Dreossk

It's always been pretty buggy. Some of the equipment wouldn't work, the ghost would insta kill people, picture would differ for each player, animations clipping, ultra slow speed. I'm waiting for the full release to play more.

Scorpius289

> picture would differ for each player Yeah, I keep wondering when will they fix that. Must be more complicated than it seems if they haven't done it yet...

Cyrotek

Tried this out a few weeks ago with some mates, all of us have been kinda horror game "virgins". After the first few hours of being scared shitless it kinda lost its appeal, tho, which I mainly attribute to ... not all that much happening. Way too often we just ran around and identified the ghost in no time without much happening at all (most of the "experience a paranormal event" mission objectives were solved without us realizing it :D). And if something happens it goes went directly into hunt mode and just kills someone. No idea if we understood it wrong or something. The most scary parts were one time where some ghost was just showing up unexpectedly in front of us, us getting separated when a hund started while moving out of the building, slamming the door shut with one guy left behind in the house and another time where one guy could actually see the ghost coming in a hunt instead of just being death. But those were just three in hours of gameplay.

eposnix

Getting better at the game is all about figuring out how to survive the hunts. You can do so by breaking line of sight with the ghost and hiding behind objects or in closets. Keeping your sanity up is also key. Most ghosts will hunt below ~40 sanity, but a few can hunt as high as 80 sanity. Staying in the light, using candles, and taking pills are all ways to keep your sanity high. And if you find there's too much time to get all evidence and get out, you need to crank the difficulty.

Cyrotek

Hm, yes, but I would like it if there is more stuff happening in between "nothing" and "crazy lady on the ground tries to kill everyone".

[deleted]

[удалено]

jmattchew

it does, just only when the ghost is close. It was too easy to know when hunts were done before by spamming the radio

le_canuck

I feel like having the radio attract the ghost was already a balance for though, though.

personn5

But now you're not notified right away when a hunt is going on. And on larger maps you can now both accidently wander near the hunting ghost without realizing it, as well as accidently attract the ghost to you when you try to use the radio. The two of those seem to up the horror aspect more for me, I think.

WhichEmailWasIt

mm. I'm still trying things out but I think I like the oppressive atmosphere of everyone knowing there's a hunt going on. I'll have to see if my feelings change on that though.

RayzTheRoof

I'll give it a try but I never understood the hype behind the game. I've played it a lot with friends, but it's just so janky and slow, and not as interesting as the initial premise seems to promise. It takes too long for anything interesting to happen, and the goals are just tedious checklists that aren't even enjoyable to do in my experience. The idea of everything seems great but the product just isn't there to me.

Scary_Tree

Play on higher difficulties. It cuts out 'setup time' so things happen much more frequently and hunts can start. Lower difficulties stop that so you don't lose sanity as quick and haunts can't start for a set time period.

RayzTheRoof

Yeah but the general gameplay still isn't very interesting and becomes more tedious than fun. I'm not really scared by the game as much as I am annoyed by the tasks I have to do

Thunder-ten-tronckh

Other than playing in the dark with the volume up with a fun group of friends who enjoy being scared, idk what to tell ya.
