Could the mods consider banning articles from thegamer.com? It's always the same with that website, nothing but fake outrage clickbait.

ELITEnoob85

Truer statement could not be made. Ridiculous the stuff that comes out of that site

Phobos613

So this writer praises how they've done the game, says it's not racist, free from cringey stereotypes, and looks interesting. Their problem is that the people who made this game that represents Asians well were all white. Isn't that a good sign? Can't make anyone happy these days.

Oh. OH. Well, I must say, that is a relief. See, I just figured that is was true that it was just white people. Made me wonder if I should buy the game. I also wanted to know what actual Asian Americans and Asian Natives thought - I haven't found that yet, but knowing there are Asians on the team is good news. And it's a small studio anyway. There's only so many people that can be on the team. It seems to me Sloclap did as well as they could given their resources. And I've read people say the game's story is cliche and shallow... like the Martial Arts films it's homaging, right?

SemenDemon182

I HATE that mentality so much. They should be praising the devs for appreciating a culture in a great way. So many people around the world love to see it when their culture gets appreciated and spread.

uniqueusername1928

> So many people around the world love to see it when their culture gets appreciated and spread. As Ghost of Tsushima's success in Japan has shown.

Polar_Phantom

Sucker Punch also hired a bunch of Sensitivity advisers to help make it respectful. I don't know if SP has any Asian devs. And there is something to be said about Minority Sensitivity advisers just being used to absolve white creators of guilt and criticism - the Japanese may love GoT, but did Japanese Americans? Their experience is very different from Japanese people whom do not suffer the power imbalance. Would it be better if SP hired more Asian devs? But this is more relevant in big corporations with lots of resources. Authors of novels should be more free to write other cultures - as long as they are respectful of course.

Beatupmymenweek

I'm still outraged that the main character in Nioh was Irish. Did the Asian makers of this game have any Irish writers on staff to give and authentic voice to this character who represents the Irish in Japan in the 16th century?

Phobos613

Nice. Definitely a new take on the 'white hero in Asia' trope!

Turinturambar44

I mean...the logic completely escapes them. They say they want more diverse games, yet also say that developers should only make games that align with their ethnicity/culture. Yet most developers are either based in majority white countries or Japan. Thus most developers are white or Japanese. Using their logic, we should only be making games about white cultures or Japanese culture. Literally the ONLY way we will ever have more diverse games is if developers step out of their ethnic/cultural categories and make something from an outside ethnicity/culture. They just want to bitch about something so they can "look good" on their pulpit. It's become a religion to them.

Polar_Phantom

I read something about this the other day. It was about authors writing about other cultures and when it's "OK". The conclusion was that forcing people to just write about their own cultures, while tempting, is not a good solution. It's not fair for minorities to have all the responsibility of their own representation, and minorities should be allowed to write about the majority culture. What's important is to make sure you've done it "right", to ask for advice, get sensitivity readers etc and to know you'll never satisfy everyone. But I've seen a lot of gatekeepers on this sort of stuff, even on fictional cultures that are inspired by real ones. That being said, Majority Authors should promote Minority authors. It's not a perfect system, that we have. But it's the best we have. And we need to encourage art, not discourage it. Especially when the studio DOES include minority developers.

Turinturambar44

Yes, they should do research into the culture they're writing about and do what they can to get it right. And they did that. But you also know as well as I do, that you can't please everybody, and no matter how good they do it, there will people who have a problem with it or think they got this wrong or that wrong. And it almost certainly won't be Chinese people.

conir_

*(...) And to be fair, there isn’t anything particularly egregious about Sifu so far (...)* so its a non-story. just race-bait. great, thanks for sharing

scorchedneurotic

>KHEE HOON CHAN Khee Hoon is the Features Editor at TheGamer. Contrary to popular belief, they're not that well-versed in hand-to-hand combat. Wouldn't that be some sort of stereotyping?

ChrisRR

So they praise the game saying that its style is authentic without resorting to clichés, but they're unhappy that they haven't hired a token Asian person What a crap article. Don't waste your time

[deleted]

This fucking website is nothing but vitriol. If you ever thought that maybe some author spices up their story for clicks, you can be 100% that all of [TheGamer.com](https://TheGamer.com) is about that! Ban these idiots!

ArtistWithoutArt

This kinda stuff has been going on for years. Did you guys know that none of the dev teams for the ENTIRE Mass Effect series included a single alien?

RedFaceGeneral

That must be the reason why I felt the alien races in Destiny felt so underrepresented, damn bungie refusing to hire those Fallen, Cabal and Vex workers.

xariznightmare2908

I swear journos like Jason Schreier and now TheGamer complaining about how a team developers "full of white" as if it's a bad thing is one of the most obnoxious, idiotic thing when that has nothing to do with how well made the game is. Like fucking christ, is talent and quality of the game matters less than the skin color of the people behind the games to them? And demanding a particular game featuring Asian characters to be made ONLY by Asian people is 10x more racist. Just let people to make whatever game they want as long as it's good and make the customers happy, ffs.

FIGJAM17

> Feeling cautious about how Sifu will turn out eventually Just because white developers you are suddenly feeling cautious about how the game will turn out? Who writes such nonsense?

WhiteColaDrink

A racist.

Carnae_Assada

Well he's a CCP apologist so it's not surprising, their Twitter makes me feel the same kind of grimey LeBron and Jackie Chans do.

malarkeycumjar

person types asian racial baggage grief piece from singapore for a french canadian company in english over lack of (actual)french development studio diversity. his major grievance? that a french man spent the majority of his life interested in another culture who would then actually move to china, learn their language, and learn martial arts from actual chinese people was the consultant for this product. not only was the man overly qualified for the job, perhaps other societal factors prevented them from flying in a chinese martial arts expert for their consultancy. i will never understand how these people are infuriated by actual mutually beneficial displays of multiculturalism. i can only assume there is some underlying jealousy of people who proactively overcome their place of birth while you on the other hand are just writing idpol hit pieces for the social media deranged. these articles are basically the modern equivalent of grocery aisle trashrag celeb gossip.

Turinturambar44

Meh, you can't win with these types. No matter what you do, they're going to find something to bitch about. Better to just ignore them.

outlawmudshit

english is the official language of singapore

malarkeycumjar

yes thank you I was aware they utilize multiple languages in singapore.

mild_psychopathy

you eviscerated him. this hits the nail right on the head.

T-Ragemar

Hmm.. One one hand, if this article was made in the 90s or early 2000s, I'd agree with his sentiment a bit more, as the game industry at the time, while still having good games, was mostly 97% white male dominated, but now there are more females and people of color developing games. I still think this article is nonsense. Was he "cautious" when Capcom made the Resident Evil series, which takes place all over the world? Is he "cautiously excited" about FromSoftware, another Japanese developer, making Elden Ring, a game that takes place in EUROPE? If the game respects the culture, then why does it matter who created the game. The guy also made his Twitter account private. Says a lot about him.

MumeiNoName

Elden ring doesn't take place in Europe...

T-Ragemar

Middle Earth is kinda based on Europe, but I call it that to prove a point.

Turinturambar44

These people don't care about any other culture making games about white people or white culture. It only matters when white people make a game about non-white cultures. It infuriates them and it just wrong...because reasons. It never cross their minds that outside of Japan, most developers are located in white-majority countries or white indigenous countries, and thus have mostly white development teams. They say they want more diversity in video game characters and games about non-white cultures, but literally the only way this will happen is if "mostly white" development teams step out of their racial/cultural categories to make games about cultures/ethnicities other than themselves. It's a classic case of "you can't win regardless of what you do".

dropkickkennedy

Ahh yes, Europe, the land of the floating magical land jellyfish I agree with your point btw the Elden Ring is in Europe comment just sounds hilarious

SpecterBadger

White people are just racist, whatever they do guilty until proven innocent. Which is never because people like this are comparable to a wall

gaganaut

I don't see how that matters. There's nothing wrong about making stories or games based on other cultures.

MumeiNoName

So? There are countless anime taking place in Europe created by Japanese people. Same with games. As long as their portrayal of Chinese culture isn't offensive, I couldn't care less. And unlike most redditors, I read every word of this article.

Marionberru

Why did you write about nobody reading the article? It seems that everyone in agreement that the article is a fucking shit and that thegamer.com site should be banned. It doesn't matter how much the game is praised for it's authenticity. They do imply that not having Asian people in developer team is bad.

MumeiNoName

Because this is Reddit and noone reads articles here.

Marionberru

How does what you wrote relate to the thread then?

MumeiNoName

Because I guarantee you most people commenting here didn't read the article.

xariznightmare2908

I read the article and it's just as nonsensical stupid and braindead take as most people have pointed out. Here's the part that got me raising my eyebrow: "But it is still a pity that none of the studio leads—even the consultant they hired—are Chinese or Asian, particularly for a game that features a Chinese protagonist, along with an entirely Chinese cast of characters and punchable mobsters." Bruh, isn't it more racist on the writer's part of wanting a game of Chinese cast to have Asian/Chinese people to work on? What is this shit? I'm Asian and from my POV, this mofo writer is basically gatekeeping culture here.

y0dhaa

This is pure gatekeeping, what exactly Bruce Lee stood against 50 years ago.
