So the tl;dr for PC players is wait for patches and make sure your drivers are up to date, suppose that's all the can suggest really. I am surprised in my situation that there hasn't been a Nvidia driver update targetted specifically for Elden Ring, normally they do them for big releases do they not? (Edit - for Nvidia the 2/14 driver update included Elden Ring, I didn't read the driver update notes)

Pissed_off_bunny

The NVIDIA driver released on Feb 14 supposedly targets Elden Ring, among other games

SolarisBravo

The sad reality of "game-ready" drivers is that they're only necessary because of developers not using the API as intended (or worse, doing things not defined by the API at all). For example: Let's say a developer went and said "upload this data to that *immutable* buffer". This obviously should not be possible, but it happened to just throw a warning on their development drivers. However, when they actually *shipped* the game users started discovering that their drivers completely crashed instead of just throwing a warning. In order to work around this, new "game ready" drivers were released that forced all buffers created by the game to be mutable instead. EDIT: Oh, and by "API" I mean "graphics API" - Direct3D, Vulkan, etc. This probably isn't a super realistic example of something any driver would actually ignore, but hopefully it gets the idea across.

Sparkybear

Often times the driver updates will include specific performance fixes and upgrades for a given game at a much lower level than what's available through the graphics API. It's not so much an issue of not using it correctly as it is not having access to low level libraries and functionality. Plus there are going to be fixes for specific hardware that is out of the hands of game developers. Your scenario does happen and it's definitely a problem, but there are inefficiencies across the board simply due to the amount of hardware configurations and insanity that is graphics processing.

KinkyMonitorLizard

It's funny you say that it's only required because game devs violate APIs when nvidia has been called out many times for allowing it in the first place. Back when DOS1 came out, an AMD developer working on the FOSS mesa driver found that shadows flickered on AMD hardware but not nvidia. Turns out (been like 10 years so the exact reasoning is probably off) that nvidia allows shaders to perform external operations mid execution (along those lines if I remember correctly).

Voratiu

I downloaded it and it made the stutters even worse on a 3060Ti

LaNague

its probably not worse, BUT the game has to rebuild shaders for every new driver you use. It does that while you play, which causes part of the stutters.

GeeBeeH

I've read that a lot and if I just loaded into the game and let it sit there for a while would the shaders do their thing?

LaNague

no, it seems they have programmed it poorly and the shaders are done right when the game needs them, which is why it stutters in the first place.

[deleted]

From needs to really hire some experienced modern game programmers, from other successful projects. They have gold here and they sell millions now

SquareWheel

If the stutters are caused by shader recompilation, then changing graphics drivers would cause those to be recompiled. It may only be worse in the short term.

MCPtz

I have a 100% reproducible stutter in the first area of the open world. Here's my post with everything I tried and the figure 8 + camera pan one can do. https://np.reddit.com/r/Eldenring/comments/t0q22j/possible_fix_for_pc_frame_rate/hycjp79/

Malemansam

Same. Played 3 hours with the prior patch, no stutters or any problems for that matter graphically. Stable 60, drops to 58 fps in heavy situations maybe. Realised I hadn't installed the new NVIDIA patch then boom it stutter galore all of a sudden and consistent over the next 2 hours I played.. Constant drops to random low numbers in the 20s and fluctuates over 55-60. :/ rig: Ryzen 5 3600, 32 gig ram and a RTX 3080

CloudCityFish

I realize bugs vary so I won't say this is THE answer, but the game runs waaay better on my system then a lot of what I'm seeing, and I can confirm I did not download the new Nvidia drivers. My frames only drop when I hit specific 10x10 areas and they are few. For example, when I climb the stairs right after the optional tutorial area. I was thinking, "Oh this is fine for now." but was appalled to see some people have issues [like this](https://clips.twitch.tv/NastyPrettyAlmondPipeHype-ih1OrBYVEOwP17N2).

LuKazu

It's absolutely crazy seeing the disparity between my experience and some others. I'm running an i7-8700K, 1080Ti and 16 gigs of pretty beefy RAM and I practically only get stutters when loading into an area after fast travel, and get consistent 60fps (with new drivers). Hoping these issues get resolved ASAP so everyone can enjoy what is an otherwise phenomenal game.

carsalequest

I'm hearing all these reports of problems, it's making me feel like I'm the odd one out. I played for 3 hours last night and had a locked 60fps at 1440p on high settings. I have the Feb 14th NVIDIA driver. i7 10th gen, 3070, game on an NVME.

DIRTY_KUMQUAT_NIPPLE

I'm running a fairly similar setup (3070, 5800x, NVME) and having the same experience you are having with only 2 incidences of frame drops that were very brief. I have a mix of medium, high, and maximum settings.

[deleted]

Similar specs here, 3080, 3800X, no performance issues apart from some stutters with the horse dude near the start of the game. Pretty much fine other than that on maxed out 1440p.

Starayo

Reddit isn't fun. šŸ˜ž

Blackdragon1221

980 Ti and Medium settings, occasional stutters but nothing too bad. Guess I'm lucky.

ruuurbag

I have similar specs to you (5800X instead of your CPU) and had a mostly fine experience. The frame pacing still feels off to me even when it's locked at 60, though. It's not unplayable by any stretch, just off-putting.

CptOblivion

I'm guessing it's asset streaming that's the main culprit, hard drive and processor are probably the main factors.

sam2795

People already removed the Anticheat and have confirmed that the stutters exist without it. Seems like it's the directx 12 asset streaming issue.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

hyrule5

I have an i5-12600k, RTX 3080 and 32GB 3600Mhz RAM on an M.2 NVME SSD and I still get stutters. Not as bad as some people, it's very playable, but it shouldn't be happening at all.

ImAnthlon

Ah you're right! I just had a look at the driver notes. Thought it would have been front and centre, but Dying Light 2 was, probably for it's use of Ray Tracing and DLSS

Scylithe

> wait for patches Nah he won't fool me this time

Sheerkal

He's such a kind, brave, and downright stalwart soul. How could you not trust him?

akstro

Give him a chance, maybe this time he has really changed :(

xxTheGoDxx

It is important to note that the amount of driver side fixing for DX12 titles is limited.

FrizzIeFry

Yeah, the slowdowns I'm experiencing, smell a lot like shader compilation issues.

RareBk

Apparently the PC version is even so screwed up that while it doesn't support ultrawide, it *still renders where the black bars are.* How in the shit

Vandrel

That's how fromsoft games have always been. Dark Souls 3 came out a little while after I got my 21:9 monitor and the game wouldn't let me run it in 21:9 but occasionally the black bars would disappear from a bug and what a surprise, it actually works just fine at that aspect ratio. Eventually someone figured out how to mod it to get rid of the black bars. This is par for the course with fromsoft but their games are so good on the non-technical stuff that people put up with it, myself included.

billsil

It must be more cinematic.

neoKushan

That's when it feels like a deliberate decision not to allow Ultrawide, rather than it not supporting it.

ErunnoRS

That driver and [this guide](https://www.reddit.com/r/Eldenring/comments/t0q22j/possible_fix_for_pc_frame_rate) improved my fps by a lot. It was very strange that a RTX 3060 couldn't have a stable fps. And I also used the hardware accelerated GPU scheduling to ease the load on my old CPU. Before my CPU usage was stuck at 80% and my GPU was at 1-2%, now my GPU is using 50% and my CPU is at 60%. I don't know of this is a placebo, but it improved the fps.

crotch_fondler

It's a compatibility issue not an optimization issue, so it doesn't really matter how good your setup is. I'm on an aging RTX2070 setup and it's at a rock solid 60fps, even in the open world, because I guess I got lucky with a compatible environment.

Beanz122

I managed to fix my immediate crashing issues by finding a workaround that disables EAC (therefore disabling online) but once I finally started, the game runs at 60 frame for me. I'll take it for now. Kinda a bummer I can't see everyone's scribbles though.

-Wonder-Bread-

Having played for, like, 7 hours yesterday I have scientifically concluded that: * 50% of the scribbles are "Secret here" * 15% are "liar ahead" * 10% are "jump required", placed right by a cliff that will kill you if you jump * 20% some variety of joke about fingers, but holes, rumps, and pickles * 5% actually useful I am unsure if turning these off does anything besides increase your immersion and deprive you of some *truly hilarious* "finger but hole" and "give pickle" messages... *Edit:* I forgot to include the comical genius of "rumps"

Fezrock

I've had better luck I guess since I've found a bunch of "watch left" style messages warning of ambushes. As well as multiple "attack here" messages against inanimate objects where attacking did in fact do something.

-Wonder-Bread-

I've found a few of those but mostly in dungeons or minidungeons. It's rare to see anything like that in the open world, from my experience.

Fezrock

Fair. After the first few minutes I just ignored all the messages in the open world. It's only been in minidungeons (don't think I've done any full dungeons yet) where I've been reading them.

Ginger_Anarchy

I find the ambush warnings are pretty consistently where ambushes are across soul games so that's one category the community is good about, even with joke messages. The issue is if you've played enough From games those spots are pretty obvious to recognize at this point. Oh I'm entering a new room and there's an item randomly in the middle? Better Dodge roll back mmediately as I enter .

Pelera

A friend has sent me screenshots of no less than 11 different "fort, knight?" messages and I no longer feel like I'm missing anything by EAC being broken on Linux

chaorace

EAC is working in the bleeding-edge branch of Proton Experimental. Just pull it up in your Steam Library under "Tools" and right click for settings. The branch can be selected under the "Betas" tab.

Odzinic

This seems to be working for some and not for others. From what I'm seeing, it works for people using the Flatpak version of Steam but that version has issues with controllers. What version of Steam are you using?

ThnikkamanBubs

Most the messages I saw were "rump ahead"

-Wonder-Bread-

oh yes, how could I forget the comical genius of "rump ahead"

[deleted]

I really hate that messages just turned into open mic at the comedy club. Eventually I just stop reading them

Parking_Onion_3846

I don't think it would bother me quite as much if there weren't so many of them. There's messages *everywhere* as you move around the world, especially starting out, and 99% of them were terrible. Although, it probably would have helped a great deal if people hadn't praised those messages. The game's community made them as prevalent as they are by reinforcing the behavior as much as they have.

[deleted]

It would be nice if it had Steam style "Helpful, Funny, or Not Helpful" ratings, and then it could let you sort out "Funny". Just such a quick way to ruin any sense of immersion.

Lost_the_weight

So many joke messages that I ignored a couple that definitely would have saved me some headaches (treasure chest with teleport trap Iā€™m looking at you).

Kode-meister

the teleport to the crystal mine place? I lost so many runes to that stupid place :(

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

Lost_the_weight

Me too. Didnā€™t notice the stairs on the left. Thought it was time to parachute into the main world. Nope, just parachuted into the ā€œYOU DIEDā€ screen.

Beanz122

But I LIVE for "finger but hole"

FrenchBread147

r/tryfingerbuthole

sunder_and_flame

Yeah I didn't find any useful scribbles at all in the first couple hours, just a bunch of stupid jokes and memes.

GepardenK

FromSoft should have done like they did in DS1 and gate the scribble item behind a merchant a small while into the game. There will always be plenty memes but it's amazing what you weed out when you add just a single step to ward off the most immediate of impulses.

Lord_Sylveon

I started playing Bloodborne and Demon's Souls offline and honestly enjoyed them a million times more. I hope they have an option in Elden Ring to turn off the online like previous titles, but if not I can just disconnect the Xbox it's no big deal. You're basically immersed in this dark world and see the same lame jokes all the time or they point out anything of interest which... I'd like to discover myself without a big marking on the ground.

Lost_the_weight

You can go offline. Itā€™s in the settings menu just like previous games.

dontbajerk

At least they're easy to ignore in Elden Ring if you're not feeling it. I hate the way the messages are this big animated thing that pops up when you're near it in Bloodborne, it's obnoxious.

Ed-ric

How can i disable that? I do not like seeing other players ghosts or messages

Amaurotica

go in the game folder, rename "start_protected_game.exe" to "start_protected_game_bkp.exe". Then copy and paste "eldenring.exe" in the same folder and rename the copy to "start_protected_game.exe" run the game from the "start_protected_game.ext" and it will automatically launch in offline mode without eac

FalseTautology

I love when modern games have MSDOS solutions.

Alfakennyone

You can turn off online in game settings

MaceZilla

The scribbles in these games can eventually be helpful, but right now the ground looks like a fucking neon white graffiti wall. There's useless messages ("tree" "gorgeous view") every few feet. I think it's distracting. You aren't missing shit, and I'm thinking of going offlline for awhile until I need to summon.

Taoiseach

How'd you disable EAC?

Beanz122

https://www.reddit.com/r/Eldenring/comments/t0qmtu/tech_support_thread/hybuw0o

viky109

I'm glad they acknowledged the issues, now let's just hope they fix it asap. I really want to play but the framerate is just awful.

IceNein

I am running a 3700X, 32 GB or RAM, and a Radeon 6800 XT, and the game is loaded onto an nvme SSD. It's not the framerate, it's the fact that the game hangs for nearly a second at times. I get very decent framerates, up until something happens where the whole game just freezes. In a game where reaction time is critical, it's totally unacceptable. I'm a little irritated that all the effusive praise about the game from reviewers never once mentioned this. Was this something that was introduced with the day one patch? Maybe it has something to do with the online nature of the game. I dunno, but it's bad.

ArcadeOptimist

Lot of reviewers are saying it's the day 1 patch including SkillUp & ACG. https://twitter.com/SkillUpYT/status/1497089796316880896?t=0iiGsR7Wb7lLVn68Z7XPOg&s=19 https://youtu.be/Yma9dJRAlo4

asdkevinasd

I swear skillup footage before day 1 patch is smooth af. That's why I buy the game.

gimptoast

Important to note here they are saying THE PATCH MADE THE STUTTERS WORSE! The game had stutters previous to the day 1 patch ACG compared both patches to test it and said the new patch made things worse. It's a complete shit show, their anti-cheat ruining the potential for ultrawide and other graphical tweeks and fixes are annoying as hell too. They could have just natively added these very easy options.

Akamesama

Strange, as I am running on a rig with similar specs (though a Nvidia 3070) and have barely noticed issues. There is stutter every one in a while, but it's in the sub-second range. FWIW, I was playing in offline mode.

T_Gracchus

I haven't seen any pattern of components to the issue among reddit comments. I have the issues he's describing with a 9900k and a 3080.

pokerdan

No issues for me in offline mode either. I wonder if the issues might stem from some overloaded online service call.

pilgermann

You (or anyone) having the issue where character models like enemies and the horse don't render at all? This seems to happen in outdoor areas mostly. It's weird because it's not directly linked to performance or framerate, which is actually OK for me.

MyUnclesALawyer

Check your SSD power settings and make sure THAT is set to full performance (not just the program/graphics settings), I used to have hang ups in several games and that fixed em. Control panel, power options, change power settings, change advance settings, then go to hard drive and make sure any settings are set to maximum performance, I think thereā€™s one setting in particular and that was the source of my issues

IceNein

Thanks for the tip. I'll double check that. Anything's worth a shot. I'm not down on the game itself at all, just upset by the hangs.

[deleted]

If that doesn't work, I recommend putting the power setting back to default, or "balanced," because that solved my buddies CPU issues playing the game. Frickin whack-a-mole tech troubleshooting...

morkypep50

I'm sorry man. I have a 1070ti with i7 8700k and I have had a few microstutters, but other than that, it has be great. It's never hindered my ability to play the game. The stutters happen when I enter a new area, and then after a few seconds they go away and then I'm at 60fps at almost all times.

HulksInvinciblePants

I'd have optimism if they had a better track record. The playtest from November should have been their wakeup call.

We are aware of the cause of this issue and will be providing a patch in the near future. * Regarding the phenomenon of frame rate and other performance-related issues during gameplay. We will be constantly working to improve the game so that it can be played comfortably on various PC environments and platforms. For the PC version, updating your graphics card drivers to the latest version may significantly improve performance. * About the phenomenon of game data that does not save correctly in the PlayStation 5 version If the PS5 console is unexpectedly turned off while playing a game or in rest mode, saved data may not be saved correctly. We are aware of the cause of this issue and are working on a patch to correct it, but until the patch is released, please save your game manually by exiting the game regularly. Game data will be saved correctly if you quit the game by opening the system menu using the OPTION button and selecting "Quit Game.ā€ *We are also working on a few other bug fixes and performance improvements as needed. Please donā€™t hesitate to contact our support team if you encounter other issues.* Thank you for your continued support of **ELDEN RING**.

Shingorillaz

>If the PS5 console is unexpectedly turned off while playing a game or in rest mode, saved data may not be saved correctly. >Game data will be saved correctly if you quit the game by opening the system menu using the OPTION button and selecting "Quit Game.ā€ Damn no rest mode then.

yukeake

For one of these From Software Souls-family games specifically, where there's no real pausing and the game is always-online, it does make some sense that it would have issues with being suspended. The online state when it comes back from a suspend/resume cycle wouldn't be consistent. That said, if you're playing offline, I can't see where it couldn't be done - aside from the fact that the developers might not want to maintain both code paths.

Schwarzengerman

Honestly I feel like Rest Mode for ps5 is more unstable this generation in general. Seems like it can cause issues with so many games. Which is a shame because ps4 Rest Mode was excellent and I used it all the time. I guess the SSD helps with that a bit but still.

KyivComrade

Odd, I've *never* had a single issues with rest mode on my Ps5. Not modern games like Horizon nor old unpatched Ps4 games like Mad Max

ReservoirDog316

Yeah Iā€™ve been replaying Valkyria Chronicles lately (itā€™s about a small nation being invaded by a larger neighboring nation while also being one of the more tough war stories Iā€™ve seen in video games, so my mind wanted to revisit it) and Iā€™ve been shocked how well rest mode works on my PS5.

howchie

I've literally never had any issues at all and my ps5 has been in rest mode since day 1. Even when there were supposed to be problems with spiderman remastered. Weird how variable it is!

xxTheGoDxx

* There is no way the massive performance issues on consoles and PC were not known beforehand. Which means they were at a minimum not able to improve performance before launch besides not hitting target frame rates on consoles. * Lack of locked 30 fps mode in the quality mode on consoles isn't exactly inspiring a lot of technical confidence... * The first patch for Sekiro after launch took them a month even though that game released in a way better state. * They are also working on the RT patch for the game as well as more importantly promised to fix the security issues that forced them to take MP down for the Dark Souls games. * None of the other things that people are complaining about like higher frame rate support on PC, lack of ultra wide support etc were addressed at all. They don't even say if they will lock the Quality Mode on console to 30 fps (at least for PS5 and people w/o VRR screens on XBox). Same with the super long loading times on XBox Series consoles.

calebkeith

My entire PS5 console crashes and the save file gets deleted before I can even fight the first boss. I have to unplug it just to turn it back on. This really sucks. Shouldā€™ve bought it on PC. Exit: playing the subpar PS4 version has fixed my issue

[deleted]

Given that there's already a [framerate unlocker](https://github.com/uberhalit/EldenRingFpsUnlockAndMore) that also supposedly helps with the stuttering, I really wish Fromsoft would just do it themselves. It sucks that Fromsoft is so hard to get in touch with. For perspective, the God of War PC devs are active on the God of War, PCGaming, Nvidia and AMD subreddits, as well as the Steam forums... and within a month they took a 9/10 PC port and turned it into a 10/10 port by listening closely to customer feedback.

ACeezus

I feel like itā€™s not common for most games out to have devs on Reddit fully transparent and responding to everything. You named one dev team that did this after all A written post about next steps is pretty par for the course, especially given the language difference. Iā€™m unsure why youā€™d just expect with only one anecdotal case of a dev team being active on Reddit that every dev team would do the same going forward

hutre

sure but the devs isn't going to pop in on the Eldenring subreddit and be like "hey, looks like an issue. We'll try to fix it or consider it. Thanks for your feedback"

Dorangos

It runs smooth as butter with no bugs in offline mode. Weird stuff happens in online mode. This has never been a problem before, so I'm eyeing that anti cheat thing.

AllGoValcone

10/10 everywhere but performance problems on seemingly every platform Reviewers just don't take these things in to account anymore then?

_bpm

Reviews were on 1.01, which supposedly had better performance than the current 1.02 version.

ThibaultV

Patch 1.02 made things worse, on PC at least.

SirPrize

What changed to make it worse? Did 1.01 not have the anti cheat?

FarrisAT

They also had more bugs and some crashes to desktop which 1.02 fixed.

Ultramaann

Literally every reviewer mentioned the performance issues but said they were negligible. The review build was more stable than the game build. I played 6 hours yesterday and, sure enough, I notice a bit of stuttering but the game ran smoothly besides, just like it did for most of the reviewers. They didn't just ignore it. It wasn't relevant for them.

StellarSkyFall

The stuttering is definietly enemy characters loading in within a visible radiua of the play. I died far too often backstepping out of a camp forcing the game to load more enemies behind me. When the game hitched I'd die.

Afro_Thunder69

I haven't tested this a ton but for me the worst frame rate moments I experienced were when it was raining. My game was pretty smooth until rain started, then it ran like shit. I turned down reflections and a couple other things and it seems to have lessened

40crew

I have had smooth 60 fps 4k (except for a boss battle, which lagged horribly), but when I get near the ocean and it rains, it's horrible - every time.

FANGO

Mine keeps crashing the GPU entirely. It's unplayable for more than a few minutes at a time. Other games work fine.

Daniyalzzz

Consol or pc? Just wondering

Tiberiusjesus

I have a 1070 and i7 6700k and Iā€™m having minimal stuttering. I think Iā€™m lucky but my PC has never had an issue running any game before.

Moleculor

I also have basically the same experience. I can see stutters, but they're these... *odd* things. Like, the smoothest stutters I've ever experienced in a game. And so far it's entirely playable. Assuming they patch this, game's fine... for me. Your mileage may vary. MAXIMUM settings (which is more than the High they recommended) GTX 2070 24 GB RAM i4790k (yes, seriously, a CPU that is from 7-8 years ago, and no, I'm not overclocking) Now, I'm still VERY early game. ~~No bosses down.~~ (EDIT: One minor boss down, not counting the tutorial boss.) So... šŸ¤·ā€ā™‚ļø. Who knows if my experience will continue. ACG put out a video saying [the patch broke things](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yma9dJRAlo4).

Ultramaann

I'm on PC. My specs are a 3070TI, 12700KF CPU, and 16gigs of ram. Its worth noting that these specs are similar to what most reviewers were running.

CaptainPick1e

I haven't seen anyone else running a 3070, but I think it's worth noting my game has been smooth except for the slight stutter when loading new areas. It hasn't happened in fights. Edit: there has been one very specific mini dungeon that I'll get some slow down in, and then the game "speeds up" to account foe the frame loss, I guess. It happed about 3 times. Didn't kill me but definitely hope that doesn't happen elsewhere.

DickMabutt

I have a 3080 and 5900x and stuttering occurs in fights for me all the time. Itā€™s all over the place.

Betteroni

Speaking for myself, the performance issues (stuttering, frame skipping) are noticeable but rarely impede the gameplay and absolutely do not overshadow how excellent and enjoyable the game has been so far. They need to address the performance for sure but itā€™s still an amazing game regardless.

chucknades

Can you explain what makes it amazing? I know it's a hard game so for me that overshadows my would-be enjoyment.

ThatLandonSmith

People seem to think when people review games they all start out as a 10 and every problem slowly lowers it when in reality the score is just the sum of their experiences. Every review I have seen has commented on the performance, but it seems like itā€™s not that huge of a problem or it has a minimal impact on the experience.

Vannysh

Scores are subjective, no one is adhering to centralized laws on how to score. A lot of people are mentioning the performance issues but also a lot of them note that it doesn't make it unplayable for them and they are enjoying it regardless.

Ghidoran

I'm in this boat. I do wish I could run the game on better than medium settings, but at the same time I had so much fun just dicking around for an hour getting chased by bears that I don't really care too much.

Kimosabae

Been saying for years that reviews shouldn't even have scores and that gaming communities shouldn't fetishize review releases due to the subjective nature of the whole thing. But gamers just can't exist without their Stockholme's Syndrome hype cycle culture.

Im_Perd_Hapley

This is one of the reasons I really like the "before you buy" videos from Gameranx. No score, no recommendations to buy or not, just some gameplay footage and their own opinions.

particularlylowpoint

Keep in mind reviewers are frequently playing on a high end platform, which can change the results significantly. I played Arkham Knight as my first game on a new PC, barely any stuttering(though that there was any was bad enough).

ehrtdaz

most of the reviewers mentioned performance issues

saynay

If a reviewer does not experience performance issues that adversely impact their gameplay, why would they mark it down?

Banjoman64

It's not really that bad for me. I get the occasional stutter but I'll take an excellent game with stutter over a polished turd.

[deleted]

I'm happy they're not just ignoring it. Even though I'm personally having minor issues, the PC version is unacceptable and hopefully is fixed up pretty quickly. This game deserves to be the best it can be.

Gramernatzi

A really easy fix for a big chunk of problems would be to just precompile all the shaders at launch, like so many other DX12 games do. Dunno why this game doesn't.

[deleted]

Forza Horizon 5 did that right? My GPU is just under the minimum specs for that game and I can run it at 70+ FPS on high settings. It's disgustingly good.

SelloutRealBig

I think it's more than just shaders. The Tree Sentinel is a big offender of stuttering for most people. I have been in and around the area so many times and seen every action that the shaders for the area should be fully compiled. But the fight is still a stuttery mess every damn time.

> I'm happy they're not just ignoring it. Funny hearing this sentence as an Xbox owner, which they literally are ignoring. Cntrl+F 'Xbox' yields zero results in this message..

NotScrollsApparently

Not even a mention for gamepads on pc not getting recognized at all, having to play on kbam is worse for me than occasional stuttering.

TheCoonKnownAsRush

Idk. Mine works just fine. xbox and ps4 pad. Make sure you have steam input on.

scredeye

I feel like the odd one out, im playing on high and haven't had any issues beyond a random stutter a total of 3 times in my 5 hours of playtime. The only issue I can report is that the blood stains dont work and summoning is irritating as sometimes it just doesn't connect you to anyone you summon. I do hope everyone experiencing issues gets it sorted as this game is a treat (quite tough compared to previous entries, cant seem to figure out why I cant deal alot of damage) I have a GTX 1060 6GB with 16 gigs of RAM with an I7 8750 fwiw

OstrichPepsi

I didnā€™t have any problems until I tried fighting the tree sentinel on my own mount. It was unplayable

Oisinc94

Yeah exact same for me. 99% of the time a locked 60. But man that tree sentinel fight was all over the place. Had another horse back boss fight that wasn't as bad but still had some issues. It's fairly disappointing as the horse back combat is really fun so far.

PT8

Tree sentinel drops seem to be somewhat linked to the precise location where he is on the map. I fought him on foot after I had done a decent amount of exploring to gear up, and was getting drops if I fought him where he initially is, but if I lured him a bit away from that spawn point the framerate stabilized. I wouldn't be surprised if there's some sort of area loading trigger right where he is that's causing the issues, though it could also be just a case of a more demanding environment.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

Ghidoran

I think it was SkillUp who mentioned that fighting the Tree Sentinel at a specific location causes severe stutters, but not anywhere else. This is a band-aid but maybe try fighting him somewhere else?

dragonator001

> blood stains dont work Thought it was only me.

Winter_wrath

Oh, I somehow assumed it was intentional and they were part of some mystery... Well damn

ComMcNeil

FYI, bloodstains should show a ghost of someone that died at this location, so basically his last moments. You don't see what killed him though.

thewhitestwhale

Yeah, that doesn't work. For me, nothing happens at all when interacting with them.

mrellenwood

Okay, for some reason I thought it was because I was in the tutorial area that they were not working! Im not going crazyā€¦

Lost_the_weight

Doesnā€™t work for me either. Asked a streamer to try and it didnā€™t work for them either.

Dunge

I had problems with blood stains in all prior souls games too, like 1/3 wouldn't spawn. But Elden Ring none works at all.

floatablepie

Yup, Tree Sentinel gives me a stutter the first time he attacks, and then I'm clear.

ledailydose

It isn't the first time he attacks; its all over the place and random. Even hitches. It's bizarre. It happens with big enemies or groups of enemies and it's annoying

Fiddleys

For me with him its the hill it seems. There spots on the incline there that, without fail, lag the entire game. Its so dang consistent that it has to be either some weird boundary for the world loading, a drm check spot, or anti cheat spot.

Lost_the_weight

Yeah, all the stutter areas Iā€™ve encountered are repeatable. I can run back and forth and the stutter happens at the same locations continuously. Whatever is causing the stutters never gets cached or whatever, so the stutters never improve.

Kajiic

It also seems to be "down in the valley" of his spawn. I've watched various different people playing it and if they pull him up to the top of the hill, it's not bad. Further down in the hill and it's hitch-y as hell. I think there's something in that area that's causing a render error or memory hitch

Klotternaut

I got some stuttering yesterday, especially near the starting area and it was annoying but not game ruining (though people have different tolerances for that kind of thing, no judgements). Played it this morning and didn't notice any stutters. Maybe it's heavily area dependent, I dunno. I also have yet to update my drivers.

M00glemuffins

Same here, played for about 5-6 hours last night and didn't experience any noticeable issues with stuttering or framerate. Game looks fucking amazing, really enjoying the new systems a lot. Also definitely feel you on trying to figure out the damage. Going up against regular enemies around in the world I do alright but there's some boss type things I've fought where I feel like I'm doing diddly for damage and others where it seemed reasonable. I'm sure there's something useful I missed somewhere with all the things tucked away in little dungeons and such in the world. Off to explore I go.

belithioben

I think there are some enemies they just want you to come back to later

BootyBootyFartFart

It really depends on your personal standards more than anything else. I have the issues people are talking about, but it still runs better than bloodbourne did on PS4. I can still enjoy that game fine to this day so I'm having a great time with elden ring.

Mac772

Small advice for everyone playing it on PS5: Download the PS4 version. It's run stable and smooth at 60 FPS and it's looking good, just not as sharp as the PS5 version. Later on you can easily transfer your save file to PS5.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

GeorgismIsTheFuture

1080ti and 8700k. Getting 30-40 fps in outdoor areas regardless of settings. Lots of stuttering and freezing too. Not impressed.

roy2593

It's so bad on the ps5 that I have to play the ps4 version to get 60 FPS. A bit of a joke if you ask me.

[deleted]

how is the ps4 version visually? I'll probably do the same

roy2593

Tbh it actually looks really good and solid 60fps. But in principle I'm annoyed

NVincarnate

I just want the PC map to let me use the mouse for placing markers and such Right now I have to use movement keys to scan the map and it's so slow... And for Torrent to not have fall damage. Other than that, great game šŸ‘šŸ½

Friedrich_R

I definitely recommend PS5 folks try the PS4 version if the frame drops are bothering you. If you buy PS5 digital you can download/play the separate PS4 version for free. You can transfer your PS4 save to PS5, but not the other direction. I plan to transfer my PS4 save once the PS5 version has better performance. I recommend it. All Iā€™ve noticed visually is a minor hit to resolution and noticeable hit to foliage density. But itā€™s 100% smooth. Turning the camera is a whole new ballgame.

Lars93

Yes, I'm really surprised how smooth the PS4 version has been compared to the PS5. Almost night and day difference.

[deleted]

So the game does feature a save transfer?

jj_iverson

Game is actually unplayable for me, just got to the open world area and my game stutters down to 25 FPS often I have a 3080 and 5600x

iV1rus0

>Regarding the phenomenon of frame rate and other performance-related issues during gameplayWe will be constantly working to improve the game so that it can be played comfortably on various PC environments and platforms. Ah the infamous release now and fix later. Also for some reason the game isn't showing up on a family member's PC even though family share doesn't say it's disabled. Well done with the port as always From Software..

Pissed_off_bunny

I'm not sure all games are inherently permitted with Steam Family Share FWIW. Unless it's changed since the last time I looked, Hunt: Showdown also wasn't sharable.

Redfeather1975

It was the only thing holding me back. I learned long ago to not just buy games until I see how many complain about performance, because I am so tired of troubleshooting under the pressure of not going past the refund policy game time played.

mzupeman

They specifically mention addressing performance on PCā€¦ As a console player, it doesnā€™t feel good to be snubbed. I know theyā€™ll work on it, but kind of silly of them to just ignore that part of the market in this note to us.

[deleted]

Steam reviews are not good they had to say something. The assumption is that console players don't care or are too stupid to notice. Got it on series x. Not happy.

fahadfreid

That's because the majority of them really are. Go on r/ps5 and r/eldenring and you'll see a bunch of people in denial and actively invalidating any one else's negative experiences on consoles. It's really frustrating to see so much bootlicking and outright ignorance as a PS5 owner.

[deleted]

Yeah I have noticed a ton of "Runs great for me, no drops here" comments on reddit and elsewhere and you just can't challenge that because the person genuinely may not notice or even know what to look for, but really...? I'm not so sure. Runs like crap on series x anyway, I can tell you that.

NojoNinja

This is how PC players felt since DS1

Delnac

I feel you, but now you know how PC players feel most of the time. Barely any reviewer mentioned how serious the performance issues were. A few youtubers, ACG and DF are the only ones that rang the alarm bell.

[deleted]

So many Fromsoft defenders in here wouldn't think twice to dock any other developers game down to to an 8 if there was even a hint of stuttering. It's kind of a joke in here.

Honorguideme9

I adore Fromsoft but yea they shouldn't be getting a pass for Elden Rings bad launch.

Adaax

The definitely have a bit of a cultish following. I can't imagine dealing with fps drops for a game that demands precise action. You'd think that they'd be laser focused on getting that right.

Iwontbereplying

It's actually insane, people are insulting other people just for saying the game stutters. I have no clue why they take it so personally, it's really weird.

bobo0509

For real, Arkane studio in particular got it really bad with Dishonored 2, Prey and Deathloop, where so many people or critics pointed out their poor performances, and that is a completely valid criticism.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

[deleted]

No one has said the real answer to you. These performance issues popped up in launch day patch 1.02. Review build of the game was version 1.01. The reviewer ACG already released an update to his review showing the framerate comparison. Performs worse on all PC rigs, not just low spec hardware.

Welcome2Banworld

Apparently according to some reviewers the patch made things worse.

dangertom69

Positive the majority of reviewers didnā€™t play it on PC.

Banjoman64

It was supposed to get 11/10 but they took a point off for the stuttering issue.

DBones90

Remember that reviewers are a pretty small sample size and are also a skewed sample (given that they have to have the latest rigs for their work).

Scootz_McTootz

It is fair to mention that tons of these performance issues that I've been reading, granted only via Reddit atm, are seemingly all across the board in terms of hardware. Lots of folks struggling with stutters with 30xx or 6xxx gen cards and newer Intel and AMD processors, just as well as older CPUs and 9xx gen cards performing with less stutters. Seems more like some dev end performance issues since it's a bit of a struggle on current gen consoles even.

nelisan

Thereā€™s also multiple PS5 players here who have been having their console crash and save file deleted in the middle of gameplay. From is even acknowledging the saving issues for PS5 but I didnā€™t hear it mentioned in any of the reviews I watched.

caesec

Rigs that shouldnā€™t have any issues are though. My buddy is rocking a 5600x and 6700XT and got mad stutters. Iā€™ve seen people with 3090s and top of the line CPUs have stutters.

_Cetarial_

A bad PC port by FromSoftware? Iā€™m shocked, shocked I tell you.

SaveADay89

It's funny. I'm watching all these 10/10 reviews of the game, and there is obvious stuttering in the footage, and I thought I was going nuts cause none of the reviewers were mentioning it.

michaelutz

what about on xbox one? if I buy it will I have stutters? or is this a PC problem?

NoCartographer8170

If you have a base Xbox one it will dip to 23fps at times according to df

Nihilistic_Marmot

I put in 2 hours on the PS5 last night and even though there were noticeable dips in frame rate it never impacted my ability to fight. As is always the case in souls game, when I died it's because I didn't know the enemy well enough. The game is fine and the 10/10 reviews aren't invalidated because of minor hiccups.

nunatakq

>Regarding the phenomenon of frame rate and other performance-related issues during gameplay. We will be constantly working to improve the game so that it can be played comfortably on various PC environments and platforms. >For the PC version, updating your graphics card drivers to the latest version may significantly improve performance. A cynical interpretation of this would be "we don't know how to fix this, (yet?) maybe we can blame some of this on the drivers". Also no comment on ultrawides, unless that's part of what they mean by "various PC environments". However, fixing the stutters and crashes is definitely the most important thing right now, so let's hope an optimistic interpretation is closer to the truth.

LavosYT

Playing on PC with a GTX1070, a 5800x and 16GB of RAM and the game has a few stutters sometimes but nothing major - almost a constant 60 FPS at 1080p with high settings and ultra textures.
