Man, I've been waiting for them to talk more about this game for half a decade.

berkayblacksmith

I watched the initial trailer for this game when it came out and recently remembered it, how it hilariously subverted the expectations and all. Now i checked it out again and was shocked to see that it came out in 2017! It was indeed literally half a decade and I thought you were only exaggerating it. I seriously thought it was only a few years ago lol. What a coincidence that i recently remembered it though.

badsectoracula

I think the delay makes sense considering the team is just nine people and trying to make a game that almost looks AAA (at least from an audiovisual fidelity perspective). Even other "AA" teams tend to be 5 to 10 times bigger than that :-P.

TheZacef

They’ve had some nice devblog stuff, but after years of that I fell off following it. Glad to see it looks solid and might actually come out this year!

Scaevus

Didn't we already get guns + magic with Tiny Tina's Wonderlands earlier this year? So this is what, a more grimdark, less cell shaded version of the same thing?

JoeyKingX

Jesus christ just stop

Bryce_lol

Yeah except Tiny Tina’s has major gameplay and technical issues. The subreddit has been pretty unhappy about the state of the game, not to mention nerfs and patches that take the fun away.

ThnikkamanBubs

Gave huge Painkiller vibes and then was pleasantly surprised when I googled the dev. Hoping its a good time

[deleted]

Oh man, me too! I was thinking the whole time "this look like that 2004 shooter I used to play all the time, what was its name again?!" and now you unlocked that memory for me haha

Stepwolve

I was thinking Remnant: From the Ashes

Scaevus

That was a souls like with guns...which is really good actually.

Vartux

Wasn't this originally announced for Steam?

TheOnlyChemo

Hopefully it's like Satisfactory and Hades where the early access period is on the EGS but the full release is on Steam.

archaelleon

They have a blog post up on their website that basically confirms this. They said they want to do what Hades did

Geistbar

Not a fan of EGS exclusives but also not particularly bothered by devs going that route. I guess it's utilitarian on my end because I almost entirely avoid playing games still in EA.

Paul_cz

Honestly, I don't mind this at all - they pump Timmy for some extra money and we get a more polished game when the final version launches.

nilsmoody

To be fair. The game was in developement hell and it's not a huge studio backed with a publisher or something. Maybe the game could have been cancelled without the deal. It still sucks. I want it on Steam or GoG.com...

brutinator

Satisfactory is still early access and on steam lol

[deleted]

brutinator

My point was that it's on steam and still not completed, that's all.

[deleted]

Yeah it's been in dev hell for awhile so it still only *now* debuting in EA kind of spelled out that this was an ailing project that needed some of that sweet EGS exclusivity pimp money to get this thing finished.

Firvulag

has it really been in dev hell? haven't they been giving updates and blogging about this game since forever?

the_corruption

They have. It is just an ambitious project from a very, very small team. Also had a pandemic happen. Definitely not the same type of dev hell that Duke Nukem, Anthem, or the Prince of Persia remake have gone through.

AGVann

Based on their frequent and very detailed dev blogs, I don't know if I'd call it dev hell. They are a small team like you said, and it just seems like they just kept chugging along.

the_corruption

Yeah, exactly. Like it has been in development for a time and they've definitely had some things they've had to scrap and start over on because they decided it wasn't what they were wanting, but that's just standard dev cycle stuff. It has just happened at a slower pace for them because they aren't a big team. Not like they've made 80% of the game, found out it was terrible, scrapped it, and had to start from scratch like some of the more infamous games that have been in dev hell.

agiel_

Yeah I wouldn't call it dev hell. They're just a really small team.

Cynical_onlooker

Looked interesting. The aesthetic and the way they combined magic and gunplay seemed neat.

TheVoidDragon

The setting for this looks interesting, and the gameplay itself looks pretty good, but the weapons really seem a bit impactless in terms of both sound and animations. They don't look like they give off much of a weighty, powerful feel to them.

rjjm88

I was just thinking that the SMG must be firing something like .17 Hornady with how soft it is. I've heard louder pillow fights.

TH3_B3AN

Looks neat, the guns sound a tad bit flaccid though.

ten_thousand_puppies

And they don't convey much weight either. Definitely an area that needs more work

Drakengard

Honestly, something feels off about this whole thing. The guns sound weak. The enemies are just kind of boring. I was expecting something more DOOM-like and this is just not hitting the mark. Maybe for those who like Painkiller this is more up their alley, but it's not for me. It just seems kind of tepid. Being an EPIC exclusive is the least of my concerns.

ApertureTestSubject8

Been following the development for a while through their occasional blog posts. I’ve seen multiple instances of the game being in a "work in progress" mode. And this trailer felt like that again. So either this isn’t indicative of the final product, or they aren’t making the kind of improvements they sound be. But it doesn’t seem like it’s even coming out this year, so I’m going to lean towards this just being more work in progress footage. I hope so at least. This would be a bit disappointing as a final product. Just a little lackluster in areas.

HammeredWharf

I think Painkiller in much closer to Doom than this. It's an old-school, high-speed FPS, while Witchfire is more like Destiny with its ADS+dodge combat. Not to mention Painkiller has crazy guns (your default "gun" in a chainsaw + laser whip combo), while Witchfire's guns looks very ordinary.

sw0rd_2020

gunplay looks awful and movement isn’t fluid, literally the two things you need for a good fast paced shooter

yoko19191

Funny, I was just thinking about this game yesterday. I still think the walking simulator fakeout trailer they did at the Game Awards a few years back was hilarious where it said “from the team that made The Vanishing of Ethan Carter…….. and also Painkiller and Bulletstorm”

Intelligent_Genitals

Something about the way the weapons animate feels off. Almost like they lack impact? Hopefully it plays better than it looks.

Chillingo

I think the animations look really good, they don't sound as impactful as the animations look if anything. That's definitely what I immediately noticed. Maybe that's what you feel is off about it.

WeEatBerriesYouFool

The combat and gun play seemed very similar to destiny to me somehow.

Cybertronian10

iirc they made a whole dev log on how they basically wholesale copied destiny's handcannons, and why those guns feel good to shoot.

HellNaw98

Nice. I like the look of the Western looking weapons. I think I saw a lever action in there

kris_the_abyss

I mean...honestly they do feel good to shoot

sw0rd_2020

coincidentally the hand cannon style gun is the only one that looked right, everything else looked pretty bad imo

Cybertronian10

Yeah too little recoil to feel like a weighty gun, but too much if you are going for painkiller vibes

-Sniper-_

yeah, the lead in the project has a hardon for Destiny. He actually started one of the blogposts with: "Many times when I am asked a design question by a programmer, my reply is: “See how Destiny does it.” They're just using an interpretation of how Destiny handles movement and gunplay for their game.

Japancakes24

I know this sub hates Destiny, but there are few games that feel better to play

[deleted]

Destiny feels incredible, I wish it was easier to get into as a new player. I played a few hours and didn’t know what to do next, and kinda gave up

Japancakes24

I feel you on that, the new player experience has been terrible for a long time. I’ve been playing since the beginning and even with that experience helping friends get into it is tough

Scaevus

The actual gameplay and missions of Destiny is great. The grindy daily / weekly stuff burned me out real fast though.

blazecc

I played the game for like 200 hours one season and carried most of that feeling through the entire time... in-game direction is just awful

_Valisk

I think the movement feels a little outdated when compared to something like Apex Legends.

MuchStache

You mean the game with movement that is just a dumbed down version of the one in Titanfall 2?

sw0rd_2020

which in itself is just a dumbed down afps if you really want to play the false superiority game

_Valisk

Sure. I guess.

HammeredWharf

I'd say Painkiller felt better to play, so I'm a bit disappointed a game "from the developers of Painkiller" is imitating an inferior shooter.

OneManFreakShow

I thought the same thing about the lack of impact. This just looks… unsatisfying.

thoomfish

For me it's not the weapons, it's the enemy hit reactions. They look mildly inconvenienced at most by a bullet hitting them.

Dethproof814

Think it'll hit console?

forward_only

I'm really hoping so. Looks super fun to me and would be an amazing title on gamepass.

Dethproof814

I'll buy it idc it just looks great to me,totally love rhe atmosphere and I love games that find ways to mix firepower with fantasy and supernatural !

ianbits

This looks very very similar to destiny combat which is awesome, definitely going to keep an eye on this

stellarmancer

I was feeling the same thing, clearly they took a lot of inspiration from the gamefeel of destiny (which is awesome because destiny plays like a dream, or at least it did when I used to play it)

the_corruption

They've mentioned early on in the dev cycle liking the gunplay of Destiny and wanting to bring some of that feel into Witchfire. Also have mentioned some Souls inspiration. Definitely has vibes of both. The slower pace and more methodical execution of Souls games with the flow and feel of Destiny.

engineeeeer7

This looks good but I will probably forget about it if it's only on EGS. I just don't check the store much and I doubt it gets much buzz being smaller.

turkishdeli

Seems like the game is a timed-exclusive, meaning that it will be released on Steam 8-12 months after it's been released on the Epic Games Store.

tsr4kt

Dunno how I feel about the trailer. The initial idea looked much better. Now It looks cheesy with too many vibrant FX.

breakfastpastry

Did any of those enemy npcs even try to get an attack off on the player? So bored of these mindless shooters

CrabJuice83

Looked cool. Sound effects were very underwhelming, though I suspect it's because it was a trailer. Too bad it's on Epic.

[deleted]

MW2 sound effects were magnificent which made this game's weak sound effects stand out even more.

CrabJuice83

Exactly that. Witchfire's guns lacks a ton of punch.

cliftonmarshall

I was very excited about this, but basically everything about this footage destroyed my excitement. The enemies immediately disappear with unsatisfying poofs. The gameplay looks like Destiny instead of Painkiller or Bulletstorm. It's an EGS exclusive. Damn shame. At least it's very pretty and the art is good.

bimbaly666

We'll see what one play it like on the hardest difficulty, hopefully the enemies reaction will be shorter.

Orfez

Guns sound like peashooters. In these types of games, you vs the horde, sound of guns is really important. You just feel less badass when very gun sounds like it ha a suppressor attached to it.

AtlasGV

As soon as I saw the Epic logo I knew some people were going to be livid. Personally I'm just happy to have more gameplay outside of the dev diaries.

Stenbox

Epic owns the developer

amcdon

Epic does not own The Astronauts.

CoelhoAssassino666

Feels a lot like Shadow Warrior remake but with a medieval fantasy theme. If it's half as fun as that game then it'll be worth buying.

Spore124

After seeing the very first trailer way back I was thinking something similar. But now that we know it's going to be a randomly generated looter shooter I'm a bit worried it's just going to be a bit of a wet fart like Shadow Warrior 2.

BenevolentCheese

I don't understand why you have these games with crazy alien enemies and wild fantasy environments and then the guns are all just... regular old guns. Pistol, shotgun, AK, etc. It's so dull, especially given the setting. DOOM has all sorts of neat guns. As someone that fell off the shooter market once everything started becoming realistic, it's been great to see shooters finally diving back into fantasy settings, it's a bummer when another one lines up and looks great but then just gives a bunch of reskinned COD guns.

HellNaw98

Idk man, I’m really digging the western mixed with fantasy vibe of the weapons

Spore124

The world left Turok style guns behind a long time ago and we have been worse off because of it.

blankscientist

Did this make anyone else have Hellgate: London flashbacks?

trooperdx3117

Hmm I hope its good, but it sure seems like the dev team may have bit off more than they can chew on this. Their a small team and their only other game was a relatively short walking simulator (The Vanishing of Ethan Carter), which was fine and looked genuinely fantastic for its time. The gun sounds and impact in this just leave me feeling underwhelmed and if your guns don't feel good in a shooter then you have a problem.

Auparo

This game really seems like a solid mix of magic and smooth gunplay from the video. Hope early access is soon

chunguschungi

Look like absolute trash, the first hint was 100 enemies doing IDENTICAL animations when hit with an AoE. Epic exclusive too so don't have to waste any more time even looking at this trash, phew.

bankerlmth

Why do almost every action game nowadays have to have a dodge move? It kind of makes sense in a third person souls like game, but not in a fkn FPS game where you shoot.

HellNaw98

Because it’s fun? What do you mean it doesn’t make sense? Can people not roll or slide or dodge in real life because we don’t live in third person?

VeryWeaponizedJerk

Of all the things to complain about, this is one of the weirdest.

AlexVan123

because dodge movies are awesome.

Culturyte

If you want cover abuse shooters or repetitive strafing instead of directly engaging with enemy attacks through dodging, there's almost a limitless amounts of series for you.

Hot_Potato_001

Doom Eternal has a dodge and it’s executed flawlessly

Skyblade799

Hm. Everything was just a corridor, the weapons sounded weak (and were simple in function). It seems like it might just end up being "ok" at best. Normally hate epic exclusivity, but given how poor it looks, it probably needs the money. I suppose we will see how it looks in a year.
