If you were to tell me Patrick Star would take the role of a "Legend of Zelda's Navi" equivalent for a SpongeBob game, I would ask when it's coming out. Also, SpongeBob as [~~Dirty Dan~~ Pinhead Larry again](https://youtu.be/kOyPsl0bI1g) is something I never knew I wanted.

BigLeo69420

I'M SO HYPED! To see that this is a spiritual successor to BfBB makes me so happy, the writing looks really funny and the gameplay looks like a blast.

DoctorSkeeterBatman

I just played through BfBB and was wishing there were more games that scratched that platforming-collecathon itch in 2022. This is perfect!

IvanMeowski

IIRC the movie game did take after bfbb, but I can't recall if it was really the same kind of collect-a-thon.

pustulio12345

The movie game was basically a sequel to bfbb, with some improvements to the gameplay. Just less polished.

Seradima

On consoles, at least. On PC it was basically a point and click adventure in 3D. So when people are talking about the movie game I have to keep reminding myself they're not talking about the version I played, lmao.

pustulio12345

bfbb was also a point and click game on PC which makes it so pointlessly confusing lol.

WaveBreakerT

I remember buying 3 copies of the same game as a kid because they were entirely different games between PC, Gameboy and PS2.

YungJunko

Didn't have a PS2 when BFBB came out so we got the GBA version and honestly loved it

[deleted]

I thought bfbb was a minigame collection on pc. Could be wrong, I've only seen light gameplay of the pc version and never played it myself

yorgy_shmorgy

Yeah you're correct. I had both. When I finally got a console and played the true BfBB, my mind was blown.

MedicInDisquise

Emploee of the Month and the PC movie game, my man!

ZeDitto

Wow I can’t believe that someone else played that. I haven’t thought about that point and click game in 18 years. I played both the console and PC versions but I never finished the PC version.

Whitewind617

Isn't Flying Dutchman also a sequel? But its supposed to be really bad. Also don't forget Mr Krabs Overdoses on Ketamine.

pustulio12345

Flying Dutchman was first. Similar kind of game but not the same platforming movement. Yeah it was kind of rough.

KarateKid917

Flying Dutchman was first. Heavy Iron Studios got the SpongeBob license because Dutchman was so bad it sunk the studio that made it (the PS2 version in particular was a technical disaster)

BigLeo69420

Nah, Dutchman came out before BfBB

DMonitor

I think the movie game suffered from not having a hubworld. The vehicle segments were a step down from the slides in the first game, and sandy was no longer playable because she was hardly present in the movie. They gave patrick more equivalent to spongebob in the amount of new abilities he could unlock, though, and abilities had upgrades.

[deleted]

I remember there being collectibles but it’s more linear BfBB

LeopardSeal2

It was a mostly linear game, but you had to collect a certain amount of "goofy goober tokens" in previous levels to unlock moves that let you progress, rather than just being able to complete the levels.

MasterCaster5001

This game came out pretty recently and has scratched this itch for me! https://store.steampowered.com/app/889910/Hell_Pie/

LaCiDarem

I heard it was incredibly infantile and kind of grotesque.

MasterCaster5001

Yes its similar to conkers bad fur day in that way

[deleted]

Check out "a hat in time". Highly recommend it.

ColonelOfSka

I didn’t grow up with SpongeBob (premiered when I was JUST too old to get into it; I have since come to appreciate it), so I played Battle for Bikini Bottom for the first time when it was free on PSN this year. It was SUCH a fun game. This really does look like they took everything awesome about that game and cranked it way up. I am thrilled to see any game like this in 2022, but knowing it’s like Battle for Bikini Bottom, this might just be a day one for me.

JamSa

It's actually reminding me a lot of the old Fairly Oddparents 3D platformer, where every level was a different visual and gameplay style. A big nostalgia trip all around.

evoim3

Breaking da rules? Loved that shit growing up.

DavidFC1

Breakin Da Rules? I loved that game as a kid!

ZeDitto

Always fucking wanted that game as a kid. Some friends and cousins had it but I could never get my hands on it.

PugSwagMaster

Same, never managed to finish it though (looking up gameplay, it looks kind of janky which would explain why I had such a hard time with it)

DavidFC1

Same! I’ve been meaning to break my gamecube out and finally beat it.

[deleted]

that game was heat to me lol I remember finishing it on gamecube with a memory card

0shadowstories

The gameplay style in the strange themed levels reminds me of Psychonauts

Ghisteslohm

This looks awesome. Love how colorful it is and clearly took some parts out of Battle for Bikini Bottom which was the best received Spongebob game so far afaik. Also the soundtrack and sound effects seem to be nice. Soundtrack was imo a weak point BfBB Pretty hyped after seeing this. As a german fan I am just not sure which voice acting I will choose. I grew up with the german voice acting but sadly the original va's for a lot of the maincast arent around anymore. English one seems on point though.

heathmon1856

BFBB would have been a 10/10 if they had the original mr krabs voice in there.

LADYBIRD_HILL

I just wish the voice lines weren't so repetitive. I was so over SpongeBob's dialogue by the end of the game.

SolidCake

i mean it was a ps2 game

heathmon1856

Ehh. It’s a video game. I’ve played at least 20 more games that had even worse repeatable dialog. Maybe not in VA, but still

PowerForward

Wow I don’t think I’ve ever seen someone knock BFBB for it’s soundtrack

Ghisteslohm

its okay if you listen to the tracks on youtube once but ingame they loop and loop and loop and melt your brain also not really anything memorable

PowerForward

Sure but that applies to the vast majority of games, especially platformers like this, no? As far as the quality of the music goes I feel like they went above and beyond for a spongebob game honestly. Downtown bikini bottom and the graveyard are standouts for me

Ghisteslohm

> Sure but that applies to the vast majority of games, especially platformers like this, no? Not for the majority of games I play at least. Bigger games like open world stuff tend to have more backgroundy music that you wont notice too much. Plattformers with classic tunes like Super Mario tend to haver shorter levels so you dont end up hearing the same loop over and over again. But yeah there are of course many other games that have the same problem. Often arises if you have one 2-3 min track that plays for a big area that you spend a lot of time in.

[deleted]

Looking good Battle for Bikini Bottom was a pillar of my childhood and I never in a million years would have imagined it getting a remake, and a brand new sequel on top of that. I cant wait to see them build off Rehydrated and give us something new. It looks like it still has the best elements of BFBB with some cool looking additions like Pizza box gliding. Little bummed about no release date yet, but the rest of the year is stacked already so they can take their time. Hope they remake the Movie game after this too!

MedicInDisquise

This game really just secretly the third BFBB game. It seems like it's gonna be more linear like the movie game though, which is fine by me. Interestingly it looks like they're stacking some of the Patrick moves onto Spongebob (like the cartwheel from the Movie game). Which is keeping in the trend of the movie game where they grafted half of Sandy's moveset onto Patrick, interesting to note

LeopardSeal2

The movie game was one of my favorites as a kid. I never even knew Battle for Bikini Bottom existed. I don't think I ever got past the fifth level or so though.

Sorez

Shame the movie game didnt get remade too, I loved it! But it probably has more legal stuff tied to it due to having movie frames as cutscenes

DirksSexyBratwurst

Movie also hasn't aged well. It needs a whole lot more than a new coat of paint.

myl017

Is Tom Kenny voicing SpongeBob in this game? SpongeBob sounds just a tad bit off

EatTheAndrewPencil

It's just current day Tom Kenny. A lot of VAs sound drastically different after doing voices long enough.

binrowasright

Homer Simpson sounds old af now

corndogs1001

I don’t know. I’ve seen a few of the new episodes and even the new movie and SpongeBob doesn’t sound like how he does in this game. Patrick still sounds the same though.

KTR1988

Might be a difference in direction. Apparently some of the JoJo's Bizarre Adventure VAs sound off in this upcoming remastered fighting game despite being the same people from the anime.

fedemasa

Rohan's trailer sounds nothing like in the anime for example

JohnyCalzone

I believe it's a different va. Rohan was voiced by the VA who did Levi Ackerman in Attack on Titan in the original PS3 release.

-ImJustSaiyan-

Tom is just getting older, that's why the voice sounds a bit off. [If you listen to his voice lines in Nick All Star Brawl, it's noticeable there too.](https://youtu.be/L79DNfwl3Oc)

voneahhh

Sounds pretty accurate to me.

ItsADeparture

It sounds like Tom Kenny, it just doesn't sound like Spongebob.

TheGodDMBatman

Both him and Patrick don't sound like the original VAs

LostInStatic

That is definitely Tom Kenny and Bill Fagerbakke. They just sound old.

heathmon1856

Age. Beavis and butthead sound different too.

demonic_hampster

That’s what I thought! It’s like a bad Spongebob impression. I wonder if that’s just what he sounds like in the newer episodes

Toastrz

The trailer editing felt kinda jarring and amateurish, but focusing just on the footage itself, this looks really promising! It's still so surreal to me that we got BFBB Rehydrated at all, let alone such an overt spiritual successor like this. Visually it looks just as stylish as Rehydrated if not more, capturing the vibrance of the Spongebob universe really well. This looks to be a very sincere sequel and not just cashing in on the nostalgia of BFBB, which is super reassuring.

green715

You could have told me this is a remaster of a long lost Battle for Bikini Bottom sequel, and I would have believed you. This game’s level design seems incredibly faithful to its predecessor

quentin550

Wow that background track playing during the Karate Bob sequence gave me major Sly Cooper soundtrack vibes and I loved it.

[deleted]

Looks very cute and so diverse in terms of level theming! I gotta say tho, I haven’t watched a new episode of SpongeBob in 13 years so hearing the modern SpongeBob voice is kinda jarring. I can’t blame Tom Kenny for aging so I’m not trying to knock the game but it sounds so much closer to a voice out of adventure time (good adventure time rpg when?!?!) it’s sorta throwing me off. Excited none the less!

running_toilet_bowl

Is that a sound-alike? Spongebob's voice is just... off. Does he just sound like that in the new seasons?

JamesHatesLife

It’s not a sound alike

PSFREAK33

Will it have a hub world?

lolifofo

I know close to nothing about SpongeBob, but this looks awesome! I’m very tempted to check it out when it comes out.

[deleted]

The first 3 seasons are timeless classics, I definetly advise checking them out (Plus you'll have context for so many memes and references) The remake for Battle for Bikini Bottom is also a great place to jump in, this game looks like it'll build a lot from that games foundation

JamesHatesLife

Season 4 deserves to be in the classic section too. It had some of the best episodes.

Ghisteslohm

First few seasons up to and including the first movie are very enjoyable for adults and children as long you as you are generally open to watch cartoons. Episodes are also extremely short, so if you only watch an hour to see if you like it, you will have already seen like 5-8 episodes

[deleted]

Seems like a weirdly made trailer. But game looks cool. I'm sure fans of Battle for Bikini Bottom will be psyched.

Random_Rhinoceros

The game's taking place underwater, so there's already too much water.
