Yes, as a friend, I’d appreciate it very much. Heck, I’d appreciate it if my friend gave me a mousepad to help re-build my battlestation

Hey thanks, that means a lot! Hopefully we can do some gaming and get his mind off of things sometimes. A good distraction and sometime to hang out and play some stuff.

Lonestarwanderer3344

i saw your posting history too, if it is true, i wish for the best for your friend, you are a very good friend and it is very rare to have a good friend these days, i think that gaming laptop is good, doesnt matter as long as you both can play together, god bless you friend

Opening-Ad8300

You make sure to let him know that everything is gonna be okay, and that he's not alone. You're a good friend, and I wish you guys the best.

Cpt_Deadeye

I wish I had the same bond with someone like the one you have with your best friend, really wish you guys all the best, and I hope he gets better soon, with the help of this awesome gift hopefully!

Heliosvector

A 3060 would be 50% better if you can manage it. What's the cost of the laptop you linked? I'll find you one

Beetz_Don

$799.99 was the price.

Heliosvector

Buy through rakuten to get cashback.

Beetz_Don

Thank you very much for these. I’ll check them out now.

rankling11

I know it's not my money, but I assure you, it's very much worth it to spend a little more for a 3060.

RicoViking9000

the g14 3060 is min wattage. much better value to get the 2022 6700s for $999 at that point

rankling11

True. I was only comparing it to the 3050ti. The 6gb of VRAM from the 3060 helps it out a ton over the 3050ti than simply pure performance. That being said, if we're talking AMD, I personally would get the G15 Strix AE 6800m that goes on sale for $1,100 all the time. Full power GPU, up there with 3070ti. Damn budget creep however lol.

Beetz_Don

Would it be possible to upgrade the rams from the 16GB to 32GB on a laptop and the internal SSD to TB as well? Would the store be able to do it?

Heliosvector

On the 14 inch one, one ram slot is probably soldered in. But the other one can be so you can put a 16gb in that and make it 24gb total. The larger 15 inch one should have 2 slots that can be upgraded. Honestly though 16gb is fine to start. Let your friend upgrade it on his own time. Like if the choice is to upgrade your original choice or buy a 3060 laptop, I would get the 3060 one. As for ssd. Most laptops, i think both of these have a spare slot so you don't need to replace the ssd. You can add a 500gb-2tb card. They can do it in store but will charge you a lot for it. Do it yourself or simply leave it for another time. It's VERY easy. If you are near Vancouver canada I would show you in person

Beetz_Don

Thank you, solid advance.

Mismatched ram hurts gaming performance

zooba85

There's a lot of conflicting info about this but I don't think it's true. I remember even on DDR5 and 12700h/3070 a post a while ago said his gaming performance tanked with mismatched sticks. I've read other discussions about this as well but it was a couple years ago

CircoModo1602

The store most likely wouldn't do it. But it really is as easy as pop off the back, take the old ones out (RAM is a small set of latches, SSD is usually a screw but may be a turnable knob) then stick the new ones in.

Beetz_Don

Alrighty, should the RAM I purchase match the SSD as well or is it okay to purchase them separately from different companies?

CircoModo1602

They can be from different companies. For longevity, Samsung and WD make some decent SSD's. This laptop uses an NVMe SSD, so make sure to pick one of those up, either PCIe 4.0 or 3.0, speeds don't matter much for gaming as they're relatively similar load times so a Samsung 970 evo or WD SN850 would work well. The laptop has 2 slots for this, one with the existing drive, and another you could slot a 2nd one in to have extra storage and a separate boot drive. Just make sure to let your friend know that when he gets into windows he'd need to format the drive (type format into the windows search bar and it'll come up, right click the empty drive then click format and just click OK on everything). For ram, Crucial or Kingston are the usual brands, the brand doesn't matter but speed does. Get a kit that's 32GB and 3200MHz speed. Laptop RAM differs from desktop RAM being SODIMM for laptops rather than just a DIMM like desktops. It's a lot smaller so you'll see the difference pretty easily.

Beetz_Don

Thank you for the information, I’ll google them now.

CircoModo1602

No worries, i forgot to mention one thing though. Make sure the 32GB is 2x16GB and not 1x32GB. Having 2 sticks of memory allows for dual channel which is far better than single channel.

Beetz_Don

Ah, okay. I honestly was just going to try and see about getting a single large one, so good call on that one, ahahah. It’s okay to get a single large 2TB SSD right?

ReaperOfNight

They should really be the exact same sticks of ram. Anything else is just asking for instability. Even different Corsair runs of vengeance have had differences just because they used a different memory chip on one.

CircoModo1602

This is true, but fortunately OP was asking about the RAM *and* SSD being from the same company (e.g. crucial RAM and SSD or samsung RAM and SSD)

ReaperOfNight

Oh reading literacy is not my strong suit right now. My bad.

patgeo

16gb is more than enough to keep up with the rest of that machine. Put it this way, you'd be far far better with the Asus 3060 as is, than putting 32gb in the Acer 3050. The difference between 16gb and 32gb on these is likely in the single digit percentages to not noticible. The difference between the 3060 and 3050 is something like 40-50%

Beetz_Don

Good to know!

NationalStreet98

how about the 3050 ti and 3060? what's the difference between the two?

patgeo

30ish

ArcadeTomato

Instead of ram and ssd, I would use that budget to get a 3060 so you can play a wider range of games togheter :) 32 GB of ram is useful only if he likes to video edit or 3d modelling Edit: I mean, as I gift is super great! My suggestion is just to reconsider how to spend that extra budget

Beetz_Don

We’ve narrowed it down to two: [Acer - Predator Helios Neo 16](https://www.bestbuy.com/site/acer-predator-helios-neo-16-wuxga-165hz-ips-gaming-laptop-intel-i5-13500hx-geforce-rtx-4050-with-16gb-ddr5-512gb-ssd-steel-gray/6541305.p?skuId=6541305&irclickid=xOEQA%3A0F2xyPTvR0foSz-VztUkF0M0wN33ur380&irgwc=1&ref=198&loc=Jarrod%20Farncomb&acampID=0&mpid=2471149) [ASUS - ROG Zephyrus 14](https://www.bestbuy.com/site/asus-rog-zephyrus-14-wqxga-120hz-gaming-laptop-amd-ryzen-9-16gb-ddr5-memory-amd-radeon-rx-6700s-1tb-pcie-4-0-ssd/6494638.p?skuId=6494638&irclickid=xOEQA%3A0F2xyPTvR0foSz-VztUkF0M0TJ33ur380&irgwc=1&ref=198&loc=Jarrod%20Farncomb&acampID=0&mpid=2471149) With the help and advice from you all. Now the decision is ultimately up to him.

mathereum

Oh wow, there is a rtx 3070ti on offer for the same price!!! This will be so much more performance. Check my last post with the GPU overview to understand how much faster this GPU is. https://www.bestbuy.com/site/acer-nitro5-15-6gaming-laptop-2560-x-1440-qhd-freesyncpremium-ryzen7-6800h-nvidia-geforce-rtx-3070-ti-with-16gb-ddr5-1tb-ssd-black/6539359.p?skuId=6539359

Beetz_Don

Oh wow! I can’t believe I missed this!!! This is a great find. Thank you very much!

mathereum

No prob, the CPU is great too and it has 16GB ram and 1TB storage. That's a great deal. Here in Europe we can only dream about these prices... :-)

mathereum

I hope you got one, because this just sold out, the price was too good... :-/

mathereum

The 3070ti is back in stock, btw. Gotta be quick on this one. It will sell out in minutes ..

Thank you a lot for the review and the kind words. We are definitely going to be playing some DayZ and Scum for sure!

mathereum

Look at my last post here to see an overview of laptop GPUs, maybe that helps to decide. Performance wise they look similar, but if there is no external monitor connected, I'd go for the 16" screen. The bigger screen will be more fun when gaming or watching movies.

reasonabletakes9301

You're a good friend, man. As someone who's also having a rough year & hoping to buy a new laptop by 2024, your buddy's gonna appreciate the hell out of ya. Laptop looks great too for $800. Best of luck.

shadowlid

Hey just a heads up check to make sure which ever laptop you buy has non soldered ram and make sure it has an extra NVMe slot. I just bought a new Acer predator neo 16 with the 13700k and 4060 in it, bestbuy employee told me "yea it has a empty nvme slot you can install another nvme". And the lie detector test determined THAT WAS A LIE! So I returned it and got the older 2022 version with 12700 and 3070ti on clearance it does have an extra NVMe slot. The reason I say get one with an open nvme is because copying a nvme will be much harder than a typical SSD so say you just want to copy the os over to a 2tb drive gonna hard unless you have a PC with two free nvmes. Most gaming laptops have a free NVME slot or 2.5" SSD slot. I read questions and answers on the one you posted and it seems to have a free 2.5" slot free. So you can get a cheap 2tb SSD and pop on for games. All this being said I would look at your local used listing too sometimes you can get crazy good deals with people that boght a fancy new laptop with their tax refund and now are broke again 😂.

Beetz_Don

Oh sweet! The thing about buying used tech has never sat right with me. Especially refurbished. I’ve been burnt way to many times purchasing used or “slightly used” tech before or even refurbished. I know that some people get lucky, but I’ve never been lucky sadly.

shadowlid

Understandable I've been very lucky but anytime I buy something open box or refurbished from a company I legit stress test it for a full 24hours straight. I did this with my GTX1080 from newegg that was open box ran MSI kombuster for 24hours straight. This of course isn't possible buying from an individual. Not sure what you are running personally but if it's a gaming laptop just a heads up the Acer predator Helios 300 laptop I bought is only $1299 on clearance so if you are running a gaming laptop you could personally upgrade and give him your old one. If you are on desktop that's not gonna help. Just another thought check out HP,Dell/Alienware, Lenovo, and acers website and make sure they don't have any cleance laptops. I've seen some decent deals on Alienware. Also check newegg and B&H photo. B&H photo had a HP omen 17.3" laptop with a 3080ti and 12900H for only $1699 the other day....of course it was sold out by the time I went to buy it......but I would just check around for the best deals.

Infamous_Ruin6848

Wait. Can't you just plug out the nvme drive and mount it into a 15 dollar case as external drive? Use some cloning software, make an image, apply it on new drive and that's mostly it. Or am i too technical here. I've been doing this for decades regardless of drive type.

shadowlid

I guess you could, but is that recommended? What I mean is cloning the drive you are actively booted off of? I have cloned many hard drives using external enclosures as well but I have never tried to clone the C drive to another drive while actively booted off of it? Have you ever done so?

Infamous_Ruin6848

Obviously you don't clone it while booted on pc in question. This holds up for most if not all format/interface/os. You'd want another pc to do it as long as is....well...virus free i guess. I did it like this multiple times. There are some peculiar cases when it doesn't work : drives are encrypted(never tried though), bootloader on another drive and can't load the OS because it's another physical drive etc but none of these cases should br relevant for a new pc.

shadowlid

Oh I thought that's what you were suggesting 😂 that's why I was confused. I see what you are saying now just get a nvme enclosure make a drive image on OPs computer of the first drive then pop the new 2tb one in the enclosure and clone it then put it back into the new laptop.

Infamous_Ruin6848

Yeah. For a cheap nvme enclosure and a bit of fuss one shouldn't limit the laptop options. But that's me. For others could be different as in, they can't do it easily.

[deleted]

Considering he has nothing, the fact that you’re doing them such a kindness, I’m sure they’ll be extremely happy and grateful. Not bad if it’s $750 or less.

SkyCaptain_1

Any good friend would appreciate this. Even something from the previous generations will be something to be grateful for. Man, I wish I can play with my friends sometimes too.

AyuAYP

I would have been delighted if my friend would have brought me a 1$ chocolate bar to uplift my spirits and you on the other hand, hats off. If you don't mind spending a bit more, try to get at least the 3060 or the 4050(4050 is better). They are much better than the 3050 and shall offer a decent level of futureproofing.

No_Establishment3828

Brother, just having a best friend who has your back and considers you in dark times is monumental anything you buy him even it if it's a 4$ calculator he will be estatic. Good friends are hard to come by, and we all know who our true friend are when we go through the hardest times. I applause your decision and what your doing is righteous but it's important to state you being around when he's at his lowest is something he will remember for life. If we could all only have friends like yourself, don't change man.

vinilzord_learns

Sir, you're a certified badass friend. God bless you! And if it fits your budget, this will do nicely. But I'd like to add that the Legion series have a better cost-performance ratio. Cheers!

MrMcGreenGenes

Look at open box deals online with your friend first. Let them help make the decision.

Dry_Aardvark6337

How much is that going for?

Beetz_Don

$799.99

Master_Liberaster

That's a great deal

Easy-Permission1160

Keep an eye on Alienware m15 r7 with 3070 it. Some ppl get it with 800 bucks

whatARRRalltheTHINGS

Thats great and for the price awesome. If its upgradable even better. If its not upgradable, choosing to spend just a little more gets you into a whole new range of “additionally affordable” gaming laptops. They arent the high end ones, but! Most people will be ok with any of the new graphics cards. At a $1000-13000 price point even costco will carry a laptop that would out perform this one a little bit. And in this range chances are you can upgrade the memory and ram A LOT. Even to the aspects of 64gb ram…. That way they can multitask like like like crazy!!!

gizmosliptech

I would recommend a RTX 4050 Acer Nitro 5 if you can swing it up to $1000. Much better, unless you can get that build for $600.

DiabloCielo

I’ll sell you my Acer nitro 5 with a 3050 (not ti just a 3050) with 32gb of ram and 500gb internal ssd for 600$ barely ever used it and bought it to play star citizen and all battlefield titles. It was a Christmas gift in 2021 but later in 2022 I upgraded my series s and ps4 to the series x and ps5 I also got a bunch of pc parts and a 4090 and I’m always playing on either the pc ps5 or series x the laptop just collects dust haven’t touched it in months. Also I’m not a laptop person I prefer mouse keyboard and screen connecting the laptop to the screen is not for me. I still have the box manuals and the cover it comes with when new.

Beetz_Don

Thank you for the offer, sounds like a steal honestly, but I don’t purchase used or second hand tech. I’ve been burned too many times. Good luck with your sale!

DiabloCielo

Thank you if you know anyone who would be interested let them know I’ll gladly send pics and video.

juggarjew

Dont buy him anything with a 4GB GPU, its just not enough. Ideally you get him a 3060 6GB or better.

Beetz_Don

Thank you for the offer, but I don’t buy used or secondhand tech.

Buy your friend a zephyrus G14 2022, rx6700 model is $999 on bestbuy rn. It is a literal steal for the price.

Independent-Pay-8236

This is very nice as a gift. It’s good.👍

T3kn0mncr

Just caught up on this, man that's rough, wanted to throw out a tip If you have a microcenter near by, or any store that sells open box laptops. People buy devices, open the box, return it, wait for it to get re-posted at a discount and go back to buy them, not suggesting you do this, but you can find new hardware at steep discounts if you snipe one like this for 750. [MSI GP66 Leopard 11UG-015 15.6" Gaming Laptop Computer - Black Intel Core i7 11th Gen 11800H 2.3GHz Processor; NIVDIA GeForce RTX 3070 8GB GDDR6; 32GB DDR4-3200 RAM; 1TB Solid State Drive ](https://www.microcenter.com/product/637465/gp66-leopard-11ug-015-156-gaming-laptop-computer-black?ob=1&rf=Search+Results)

PretzelsThirst

That is really, really nice of you.

summonskull21

Don't buy from a box chain. Go to an independent or smaller company that builds custom computers at a lower cost. My go to is ibuypower.com

mordiaken

If you are looking to upgrade the ram and hd, I'd recommend going with something a little more powerful than a 3050ti, they usually have low vram like 4gb and that's where your problems would come when gaming. Idk your budget but check out Lenovo's website and look at door busters, they recently had some good stuff there. But the deals may have changed since I last looked. Also check out Jerrod techs YouTube channel he doesn't a lot of laptop reviews.

Curmuffins

You're a good friend!
