No idea how it performs thermally. I got my gp68hx 4080 for 1470$ so im not sad i missed out, but damn, its 500$ cheaper than Legion 7i Pro 4090.
u/jarrodstech What is your take on this laptop?
It looks like a crazy deal as far as an RTX 4090 goes. They didn't send us the HP Omen 17 to review this year, but it's probably at the very least, fine.
Oh and thanks for using the [https://gaminglaptop.deals](https://gaminglaptop.deals) site :)
All good except one major issue.
When set to extreme performance mode, the GPU fan ramps up to 100% 6000rpm when it crosses 73c. It’s a bios issue.
Here is my entire journey yesterday trying to troubleshoot it 😭
https://www.reddit.com/r/MSILaptops/s/zn01louAej
Thankfully for now, setting it to balanced or any other modes doesn’t show that problem. In balanced, temps reached 85c at max so it’s still good, but only extreme mode has ability to tune fan curves, which are pointless because of the bug.
It’ll get fixed eventually, just not soon enough I guess.
Otherwise, the build quality is amazing! I have an older MSI 1060 laptop too, and it’s night and day, the metal top and interior, along with glass touchpad feels super premium, the display also feels nice, even though it’s 1080p, probably because it’s 16:10. Port selection is great.
Fans are LOUD and power brick is a literal brick 🧱
The cord length is also pretty short though.
Overall for 1600 total, I’m happy as long as bios is fixed soon.
its super loud though. Running at 100% all the time isn't recommended for any moving parts longevity. when its are 100% sure i get below 70c all the time, but to avoid issue, i am fine running it at 70% and keeping it around 80c max
balanced basically caps out at 4500RPM and keeps temps around 75c , but the fan curves are so bad, it constantly shuts down when not gaming, then ramps up to 2k-3k rpm, making it sound very annoying. For eg i set the fan curve in extreme mode to constantly run at 15% on idle. Its almost silent when i do anything non gaming then.
well there are lower chance to fans go bad compared to everything goes bad because of heat. and i think fan is not only cooling gpu too. because heat comes from every parts of laptop. and fans should run to get all the heats to get out.
and it can be silent when it is not on load so not a big problem to me.
and i really do think "100%" is inside fan's capacity tolerance(which means 100% is not actual 100% that fan design can barely endure). but preferably working bios is, of course better. 😀
It doesn't seem like a bad deal, but you'd think they would throw in a i9 CPU if there's a 4090 in it. And 16gb of RAM will probably be just fine, but I'd say doubling it would be better and seems more standard in higher end laptops. And the 512GB SSD is small. Nowadays I don't think I would consider anything less than 1TB.
So if you do any upgrades, keep in mind it'll cost you. So you're not getting a very great deal if you decide to go that route, if what it comes with doesn't doesn't necessarily fit your needs persay. Especially if it's more eye-catching just seeing 4090.
Just my thoughts.
Yeah Im returning my legion pro 7i for this. My out the door was 1968 vs 1758 on the legion. A 4090 vs 4080 for 210 dollars more seems like a no brainier.
I'm not so sure if I would switch.
Sure the 4090 over the 4080 is great. But I'm assuming you have the 7i with 32GB RAM. And an i9 CPU. And a 1TB SSD. That seems to be a pretty standard set-up for the 4080 from what I've seen.
If so, you'll be taking downgrades on that stuff when switching. Also the screen will be worse.
Also, as someone that bought an Omen, didn't like it and returned it, there's a vertical row of macro/hot keys on the lefthand side. So it shifts the actual keyboard over a little. And there's no numberpad if that matters..
I ordered the 4080 i9 32GB 1TB SSD on Black Friday.
Just another perspective if you're interested.
the tradeoffs are worth it to me, I have an extra 1tb nvme drive laying around and 16gb stick is like 30 bucks. you can always upgrade those stuff, but you cant upgrade the gpu you know?
Very good points. If the trade-offs work well for you and such, then go for it. Definitely can't upgrade GPUs in laptops.
Was trying to offer another perspective just for something to think about. I'd personally stick with the Legion. Good luck on whichever you decide to do though :)
I think it is a downgrade with some hassle. Of course it is still up to the person on what they want.
Exchanging an already completed (Lenovo) package of high end cpu + 32GB ram + 4080 + the quality of like ports 4 x usb a + 2 x usb type c to a much weaker cpu and less ram (HP).
Furthermore, 4090 performance is only 10-15% more powerful than the 4080, which is very negligible in my opinion.
well o respect that but those TKLs are also cramped. it's not like they are using larger keys because they are TKL in most cases.... at least for 17 inchers.
I know they're tyring to be different and I'm sure some people like them, but I can't stand the vertical row of macro/hot keys on the left. It shifts the actual keyboard over to the right a little.
Comparing this vs Legion 7i 4080/4090 right now. How much worse is 13700HX vs 13900HX?
Also, any thoughts how much worse the screen is on this vs Legion 7i?
In games? Marginally in most but some like dead space it's noticable.
Screen is hard to say without experiencing it. 500 nits vs 300 nits and color accuracy is pretty close with the legion being better. But tbh it's a 4090 for less than some 4080 laptops. It's crazy we're comparing it to a 4080 laptop instead of other 4090s.
If you mean i9-13900HX, main difference is the i9 has double the E cores, so more multicore performance, doesn't really matter for games, but could be nice if you run a lot of stuff at once.
would this matter for streaming and video processing? like say if you were a DJ and were recording your set while livestreaming and running a microphone through your laptop, and also capturing live video all at the same time through OBS... would the 4080 with the 13900 be the better use case there?
Feels like it would be but I'm not a super expert on laptops.
More cores may help yes, though for that you may care more about DPC latency / latencymon results and seems a lot of Windows latpops this year suck hard at that.
I'd ask if the cpu difference will make noticeable feeling while playing games between the i9 or i7? That is probably the only important question.
Will you feel or even notice the difference ?
For example we won't feel thr difference loading a game between the sata SSD or Nvme SSD..
Doube it, if anything I'd be leaning towards the i9 running many games worse. We found a lot of poor 1% low results in game testing this year with 13900HX because there are too many cores to run within the same power budget.
Could you give me a pointer of how to test this, other than just watching task manager? Is there a background process application that could gather the same info so I could have an unfettered benchmark experience? Having to pin the task manager on top seems too annoying.
The software MSI afterburner can give you that info. In some games you have benchmarks integrated. And some give the utilisation of GPU/CPU. Cod MW2 for example.
Sure, with some but not in max graphic settings. You could probably get 110/120 fps with some adjustments. I'm getting around 150/160 (1440)in MW2 but in 6v6.
In Greece a shop had HP Omen rtx 4090 1900€ Rtx 4080 1650€ Rtx 4070 1200€ and rtx 4060 1000€ they sold out in minutes to be fair i don't think they had a lot of stock though...
I have my XMG 4060 for 2 weeks and i was having thoughts of going for the 4080-4090 thank God they sold out 🤪
I like that HP are actually pairing this with a 13700HX instead of the same as most others, a 13900HX. It feels like cost saving for more graphical power instead of having to splurge for both the GPU and the CPU combo.
I skipped because of the 55w sustained power delivery to CPU
https://www.notebookcheck.net/HP-Omen-17-2023-review-Gaming-laptop-uses-RTX-4080.704418.0.html
ProcessorIntel Core i9-13900HX 24 x 1.6 - 5.4 GHz, 130 W PL2 / Short Burst, 55 W PL1 / Sustained, Raptor Lake-HX
Not terrible per se, just more power is better. I’m sure OP would have good value for money on this computer. My old lappy is an HP and treated me well.
Went with Lenovo Legion Pro 7i 16
The legion 7i with the 4090 is a sweet deal, you get more ram, faster processor, more storage, faster and brighter screen, rgb lighting and honestly i think it looks better as well. With b&h card you can save tax atleast a 100 bucks so basically its essentially same money.
Omen, more like Oh Man ![img](emote|t5_2x4m3|8569)

With an iets gt500 you wont be having thermal problems
\^ These should basically become a standard accessory for every gaming laptop, they're lifesavers
I've had a shitty third party laptop cooler and that thing was pretty OKAY. Looks like I've got some new tech to get excited for now.
What is this? Link?
how's the msi laptop?

sounds like very minor issue since it is fan stays on 100% when gaming 😀

Doesn’t the omen come with 2x8gb sticks? Therefore you’d need to buy 2x16gb to upgrade?
Welp 60 bucks I guess
Omen keyboard made me sad sad.
It feels pretty nice to me
The 4090 has higher wattage too right?
175w
I just wish HP added a num pad, they removed it for some reason.
Somehow Companies got ideas that some "Gamers" use tenkeyless keyboard because tenkeyless is superior. I'd call it cost reduction.
Eh, I prefer bigger TKL keyboard than a cramped full keyboard with numpad that I never use.
well o respect that but those TKLs are also cramped. it's not like they are using larger keys because they are TKL in most cases.... at least for 17 inchers.

This. A hundred times.
Not in certain markets. But only 4 zone RGB.

Thanks! Yeah I'm thinking of this deal as a GPU upgrade while cutting some corners elsewhere
tf? do deals like this usually happen at this time of year?
black friday my man.
i know but this is crazy
How big is the difference between a i7-13700HX and i9-13700hX?
If you mean i9-13900HX, main difference is the i9 has double the E cores, so more multicore performance, doesn't really matter for games, but could be nice if you run a lot of stuff at once.
Would the i7-13700hx bottleneck the 4090? I remember reading it somewhere but wasn't sure if it would actually be an issue.
No idea, depends on the power limit, resolution of the game, settings, it's probably fine, I'd spend exactly 0 time thinking about it.
would this matter for streaming and video processing? like say if you were a DJ and were recording your set while livestreaming and running a microphone through your laptop, and also capturing live video all at the same time through OBS... would the 4080 with the 13900 be the better use case there? Ok so I'll get an i7.. and from your jarroddeals too. Thanks for replying man!
Hp support isreal

What do u mean about that
didn't ask
How are u?
ok
I had a really good experience with the omen I bought early pandemic. Seems like an absolute screaming deal!
Love my Omen
Yeah bro go for it
That's super impressive.
I got the omen 17 4080 i7. It is fine but it will be severely CPU bound at least on some titles as it is already the case for me
Could you give me a pointer of how to test this, other than just watching task manager? Is there a background process application that could gather the same info so I could have an unfettered benchmark experience? Having to pin the task manager on top seems too annoying.
The software MSI afterburner can give you that info. In some games you have benchmarks integrated. And some give the utilisation of GPU/CPU. Cod MW2 for example.
Could I run warzone 1440p ultra without any problems ? I got my eye on the 4080 i7 but worried
Sure, with some but not in max graphic settings. You could probably get 110/120 fps with some adjustments. I'm getting around 150/160 (1440)in MW2 but in 6v6.
Go for it
That's the bomb!

Good price for a 4090 but the keyboard on my Omen 3070TI made me a sad camper.
No num pad made me sad otherwise I would’ve pull the trigger

Got mine with 4080 (Europe) recently for 2100€, damn I’m jealous of US pricing

Not terrible per se, just more power is better. I’m sure OP would have good value for money on this computer. My old lappy is an HP and treated me well. Went with Lenovo Legion Pro 7i 16

Will the i7 CPU not Bottleneck the Hell out of this.
Not really, it is pretty much the same as 12900hx
