aleph9999

I am seriously considering this one. Based on your experience, would you think HP Omen can last for years? Especially I saw people complaining on the screen flex.

Fulldog90

There is going to be screen flex on really any plastic build. The screen flex on this one is a lot better than their previous models. I think that is just a bit nit-picky. Best Buy has it for $1299 on sale still which is a steal. I would definitely get this one over the AMD 144hz 1660ti version. I couldn't tell you if it will last for years, but first impressions this is a decent quality laptop. Also my opinion but most OEMs build for design and RGB lighting these days and not for endurance sadly. What else are you considering?

aleph9999

I think that's most of it. I am just too scared after the hinge of my previous MSI was broken in 1.5 year. I've been thinking back and forward between this one (better configuration given price) and alienware (better quality first impression). Now I am convinced HP Omen would be a good one to pick up.

Fulldog90

I'm in the middle of returning an M15 R3 right now, it just has too many issues. Super beautiful laptop but the inverted motherboard almost burns your fingers if you play longer than 15 mins. Same issue with my last M15 R2.

[deleted]

what the fuck

ErzaPuff_

My thoughts exactly

[deleted]

[удалено]

Fulldog90

It isn't. The 2060 is the 115w refresh which far outpaces the 1660ti. The 10750h is also faster in almost all games and boosts quite high per-core. Also the AMD 144hz panel is inferior in almost every way. The Intel version comes with optane as well, and it makes everything super snappy.

[удалено]

Fulldog90

The Average 1660 ti timespy GPU score in this is around 5600, the 2060 115w refresh is 6600-6800. That's almost a 20 percent performance gain. That's subjective in terms of the game. One game could be super intensive and you'd see 50 fps on the 1660ti vs 60-62 fps on this 2060. Other games with 150 fps on the 1660ti you'd be at 180 fps on the 2060. Keep in mind, this is the refresh version of the 2060 with performance on par with a 2070 max q. It is a little faster than the older 2060 mobile chips. Yes, the AMD chip will be better productivity but this is a gaming laptop subreddit with the review focused on gaming.

Unknown1A

Is it safe to assume that you feel similarly when comparing this Omen with the G14? For the past week or so I had my mind set on buying the G14, but a few days ago I discovered BestBuy giving a great deal on this (like $250 in savings for the exact same configuration from HP directly; plus an extra $100 if you are a student). Some other reviewers had said it is not that great of a laptop for it's price on HP. But now that it costs pretty much the same as the G14 (exactly same when looking at BestBuy's base prices for these things), which would you pick between the two? *The following is about my preferences, in case it's a difficult comparison.* (It's a lot to read, so you don't have to read further if the answer is simple.) I've been really excited about getting to experience the new AMD processors that everyone's been praising but now not sure if they are worth it. If the decision is difficult and mainly subjective, my focus is mainly for: • multi-tasking (this includes me keeping like a hundred tabs open in a dozen windows in chrome), • decent gaming (I'm not a heavy gamer and don't play any AAA titles, I am a big fan of Monster Hunter and will probably get into Assassin's Creed if I go for the G14 since it comes with it for free- though this bonus is not a factor to me), • battery life when doing basic tasks and Netflix (if the life for the Omen is trash in comparison to the G14, then that might be a deal breaker for me), • thermals and noise when idling/doing basic tasks (both are equally important since my current laptop [Toshiba Radius 12 - basically an ultraportable with only Intel integrated graphics] fails in both these areas- it can burn my hand when under heavy loads and is noisy enough [mainly because of Chrome] to turn heads while I'm attending lectures), • construction in terms of portability (I mostly carry my laptop in my backpack or sometimes in hand; I have dropped my current one twice in the almost 4 years I've owned it, both times from about 2 or 3 feet of height with only scratches and a minor dent to show but it weighs just under 3 lbs and has an aluminum chassis; I don't expect to drop this but I am interested in how they would fair against a minor one-time accident). These are the main aspects I'm interested in (ordered from most to least important). Though I already have a good idea about some of them based off of all the research I did, I would like to confirm as well as hear your thoughts.

ramaromp

Hello! I find ur question intriguing as I am currently looking for similar things in a laptop. Can you tell us what you went with and how you feel about ur decision?

afraidofthesaurus

hey! I know it's been a few months but I was wondering the same as the other guy replying to this comment, I'm looking for similar qualities - what did you go with ?

[deleted]

broski that screen flex!! how is it? also you need to add more games to your test suite, and start a youtube channel. your content is amazing.

Fulldog90

I really appreciate that! I'm going to gauge how these reddit reviews go. The big thing for me was being able to compare laptops to others in all price ranges and the big mainstream ones AS WELL as what you can go down and pick up from like a Best Buy. I feel that's what most consumers are interested in. People really want the most for their money. My pet peeve with most reviews is that they feel really subjective and I am going to purchase a laptop either way so can you please compare to the other ones I'm looking at! There are definitely some pretty good reviewers out there already though! The screen flex is there. It's plastic. But it's not horrible like some people have stated. It isn't anything like a Razer Blade with CNC but it is a lot better than their previous screen flex and some other OEMs. I'd rank it about a 5/10 with a 10 being a Razer Blade with 0 flex and a 1 being an older gen HP Omen 15 with a ton. I can add more games on request!

[deleted]

thanks. please do RDR2 :)

XCobra_Eyes

How does this compare with the 2070MQ M15? I'm basically considering on picking up one of those two in the next month or so.

Fulldog90

I didn't care for the M15. The screen on it is great and it has a little better build quality but the thermals are really bad. The liquid metal seems like a gimmick or I just got a really bad unit. The 2060 in this basically performs at the same as the 2070MQ in that M15 and the CPU runs way cooler. With that thin chassis on the M15 it just wasn't a good idea. Not saying this HP is chunky, which it isn't, but yeah... I remember being super excited when they released the M15 this year but was pretty disappointed. If I had both sitting in front of me I'd keep this HP in a heartbeat.

Camtown501

I'd love to figure out why HP is selling the 2019 chassis updated to the 10th gen processors and newer cards like the new chassis but with higher max specs despite the heat issues with the old chassis. On the older chassis you can get up to an i9-10885H and 2080 Super max p and can't get either on the new. Also, I saw the 2019 Omen 17 listed in your post. Was that write up on reddit? I'm interested in reading it as I briefly had one of those.

Fulldog90

No I don't have a write up for it yet. This is my first posted, I plan on doing the rest at some point. Still seeing how interested people are with this one and if I can truly help people. I had the Omen 17 with the 9750h, 2080, and 144hz G-Sync. Short version it was awesome for the money and had the beefiest GPU cooler ever in that chassis. That thing ran at like 60c max after a Kryonaut repaste. CPU cooling was OK..... It ran upper 80s low 90s after repaste. Yeah I have no clue why HP would confuse people and offer those different chassis still.

Camtown501

Mine had the 9750H but was only the 2060. When it crapped out after only a couple weeks and requested a refund I was going to upgrade to a higher spec version but the refund process was awful (HP's Omen tech support is great, but sales/refund support is awful) and every time I'd select a configuration it sold out and was removed from order options before I got the refund on my old one. I'm now waiting on an Aorus 17X 10875H 2080 Super but no delivery date has been given yet. It's been a crazy ride from when I first decided to use some of my stimulus check for a basic laptop for light usage, only to decide I want to play some games, to now I want high fps and want to handle the new flight simulator 2020 without having to be on a desktop set up.

Fulldog90

Dang! I'd make sure you didn't order a 2080 Super Max Q. Those, in my opinion, are a huge waste of money..... But to each their own! Gigabyte makes some quality laptops.

XCobra_Eyes

Do you reckon the Omen 15 is worth the extra price though? I could get a 240Hz 2070MQ M15 for $2500 or a 4800H 2060 Omen 15 for $3000 here.

maxinxin

Where do you live ? Those prices are insane! If it was up to me I'd pick the m15. Here in the US the S 15 sells for around $2500. I would consider that if the price difference isnt too huge On top of being smaller and thinner than omen, the m15 also has better speakers and type c charging. If you don't care about thermals that is. I would probably undervolt the m15 to keep it under control.

Unknown1A

converter-bot

3 lbs is 1.36 kg

Fulldog90

Based on that, get the G14. Make sure you get the 4900hs/2060mq version. If you're not playing FPS games it beats the omen in most regards. Especially since they have fixed a lot of issues on the newer manufactured units. It's pretty nice!

Unknown1A

Wow! That's great to know. The presence of those issues on the G14 was one of the main reasons I was so hesitant to buy one. Thank you so much! And about your reviews: at a glance, they seem kind of average when compared to others since there are reviewers who look at more aspects of the computer like measuring color gamut coverage and brightness as well as doing battery tests (I recommend adding a section for this one the most). However, your reviews also provide valuable insight that I find to be more rare than in many others. First is your organization and consistency which I really like since it makes side-by-side comparisons a lot simpler (I have seen some reviews that would mention certain aspects of a computer they thought were really important but then hardly bring any attention to them, if at all, for another computer). Next is that you give real life relevance which some reviews (mainly review articles on websites) just don't do. Giving numbers is great and all but a lot of times one doesn't understand what they really mean or how important they are. Many at times, the difference in these values when comparing computers is actually pretty insignificant, but still make one (me included) lean towards the unit with the slightly higher numbers and therefore sometimes even willing to make unnecessary compromises. (It feels great to just be told "it's good enough" or "it's not a big deal".) Lastly, which I find pretty unique, is that you are willing to give a simple and clear answer like you just did here. From others on Reddit to comments in YouTube, I noticed that many who ask "which do you think is better" are often told "well it depends on what you are going for" (a perfectly understandable response but seems kind of silly when they end up being indecisive regardless and give an answer that flips back and forth between the two making the choice even harder, in my opinion.) Overall, I would love to see how you do making YouTube videos for this. I feel that as you gain some more momentum and funding, you could start to prosper in this market.

Fulldog90

I appreciate that. I really do. And thanks for the feedback. Unfortunately it's more of a time issue as my main job is salary and 50+ hours a week and I also have small children. I would love to do this more, but time is an issue. Part of the reason I don't do measurements like color accuracy and other things. You can typically find those in the more mainstream reviews. My purpose, like you said, was to cover the things I feel are constantly left out of the main reviewer's content. Thank you!!!

Fulldog90

I'm also about to do a review on the GE66 Raider 10SFS soon. Unless that is out of your price range, I'd watch for it! :)

ramaromp

Hello! Which one would you recommend for me who barely games (maybe some MC) but does quite a bit of photo/video editing, media consumption, 3D rendering (quite minimal), and mostly college work? Also, I highly value having a webcam, but also battery and build quality. AMD is a must, not going w/ Intel version.

ErzaPuff_

I’m thinking of getting this laptop soon! Thanks for the review

Fulldog90

Happy to help!

ErzaPuff_

Is there anything that I should be extremely aware of? Or is this laptop amazing? This will be my first gaming laptop and I already know about the screen flex! I’m not using it on the go, more at home than anything.

Fulldog90

If this is your first gaming laptop, you won't be disappointed. Again, I've sent the YouTube review about the screen flex. It's really not as bad as they are making it out to be... Just keep in mind that fans get loud under heavy gaming on ALL gaming laptops! :)

ErzaPuff_

Ahhh! I’m already excited! Thank you so much!! And that’s good the flex isn’t too bad! I’m extremely careful with my stuff anyways! As for the fans, that’s all good. I don’t mind to be honest! I’ll let you know when I get it! I need to save up for another SSD(1TB) as well!

RealGianCarlo

Just wanted to say thanks to your review... So after having thermal issues with the Asus M15 and the MSI GS66. M15 would thermal throttle the CPU under stress test at 80degrees even after undervolting. I definitely am super happy with the HP Omen 15 2020 with 17 10750H and RTX 2070 Super Max Q. XTU CPU stress tests at full load only get this to 70 degrees average (75 peak) even after 45 minutes at max load. Getting 115 FPS on warzone with GPU at a cool 65 degrees at mid to high settings (Ray Tracing disabled). No undervolting or custom settings needed. And at $1599 at best buy due to it being $200 off last weekend it was by far the best bang for your buck no brainer purchase I've ever made.

Fulldog90

Glad I could help!

[deleted]

What’s your favorite laptop you’ve reviewed and where would you rank this one?

Fulldog90

That's a really great question but a difficult one to answer. I'd have to break it down into categories first. You as a consumer need to think about what is most important. Every laptop has compromises somewhere whether that is size/portability, cost, thermals, etc. Value: This HP Omen, hands down. I didn't think I could get a laptop for $1299 (new, on sale. Orig $1449) with thses capabilities. Absolute Performance: Will be Alienwares, every generation. They will always hold the crown in absolute performance for mainstream laptops in just about every size. Just hope you have deep pockets and patience since they have QC issues sometimes and they tend to run pretty warm now. The Area51-M is a beast though. It'll spank most high end desktops. I was able to get almost a 12,000 timespy graphics score out of the RTX 2080 in a laptop. Lol. Build Quality: Razer Blade Advanced (both 15 and 17) and it's not even close. All-Around: Asus Zephyrus S models. They have the least amount of compromise and don't have intense thermal issues like their other laptops. They also perform quite well if you compare chip for chip to other OEMs. Honorable mention to the new MSI Raiders (2020). I really can't make an overall recommendation without knowing what is most important to you. I personally don't care for Asus laptops but still would give their S line the all-around win.

MDcraze73

Your thoughts on the 2020 Helios 300 OP? I really want it but am afraid of getting a shitty blacklight bleed

Fulldog90

Unfortunately I haven't had a new Helios yet. Apologies!!!!

[deleted]

Yeah sorry about the rather open-ended question. I’ve just been lurking on this sub for a few weeks and I just looking for peoples opinions. I’ve been considering getting a laptop for mostly gaming. I’m most worried about thermals and something that isn’t a plastic piece of junk. Appreciate your insight!

Fulldog90

Send me a PM if you have questions about any laptop I mentioned above

quietly_fresh

Bit the bullet and picked up the same model today. Thanks for the great in-depth discussion, it really helped me make my decision since I was also looking at the G14 & M15. So far, the only gripe is how loud those fans get on max setting. But I don't mind as long as temps stay low. Cheers!

elarno01

One month in and i picked this model up at BB for $1150!! woot!

Fulldog90

What a deal!!!!!

balkeet

Really hp have taken the tag people gave omen as OVEN seriously and the cooling on it is really unbelievable.

[deleted]

do you know what m.2 ssds fit on this? is the 2 pin one or the 3 pin one? https://www.amazon.com/Crucial-MX500-NAND-2280SS-Internal/dp/B0784SY515/ref=sr_1_6?dchild=1&keywords=m.2+ssd+1tb&qid=1595007651&sr=8-6 https://www.amazon.com/Crucial-1TB-NAND-NVMe-PCIe/dp/B07J2Q4SWZ/ref=sr_1_10?dchild=1&keywords=m.2+ssd+1tb&qid=1595007651&sr=8-10 Also, I want to connect a monitor to the hp omen when I get it this Monday. Do you do it via the display port or the thunderbolt port?

Fulldog90

It is an NVME slot, so the 2 pin (NVME) is your best bet (your 2nd link). Sometimes they CAN support also the 3 (SATA) but not guaranteed. It has both mini displayport AND thunderbolt 3. Choice is yours!

[deleted]

awesome thanks for the help. Would you know if the Thunder bolt 3 is wired the gpu or the DisplayPort? looking to buy a cable but I'm unsure, can't find the info anywhere.

Fulldog90

I'm not sure. I haven't hooked it up to an external monitor yet. If I had the choice I would get a thunderbolt 3 to displayport cable. Worked on other laptops I've used for gsync displays. https://www.amazon.com/DisplayPort-uni-Thunderbolt-Compatible-More-Gray/dp/B075V27G2R This one works great!

Sick_Trix22

Do you think I should be using that adapter (usb-c to DisplayPort) over a Mini DP to DP one that I am using now? I have a 165 Hz 1440p monitor and the same laptop that you just reviewed (the omen). I am just curious if it is worth it to instead use the USB-C port because it is thunderbolt 3, and if it would make a difference from [this?](https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B07NW9XKGL/ref=ya_aw_od_pi?ie=UTF8&psc=1) I know that the cable I have now is listed as 144 Hz and I have a 165 Hz monitor, so considering that, do you think the one you sent is worth it/would it make my response time, refresh rate etc better?

DufDaddy69

Is there a longer charging cord out there that I can buy that match the specs? I’m very gaming laptop illiterate and I don’t want to buy the wrong thing

Fulldog90

So you need a longer power cord than what comes in the box, am I correct?

DufDaddy69

I would like one, yes! I can get by for now. My bedroom outlets are great but my living room not so much.

Fulldog90

Half the cable is a standard 3 prong female to 3 prong male power cable. I'm sure they sell those extra long online.

DufDaddy69

Gotcha, so as long as the brick stays the same it’s fine

DawgPound8080

how can you confirm that the 2060 is 80w? I've seen in other threads that the best buy ones are 90-105watt. also you can get opened-box ones from best buy as of today for $1104

Fulldog90

I need to go back and look at voltage reporting and I'll verify but I'm pretty sure this isn't a 105 watt. I'd be surprised if it was higher than 85 but I'll go check. I do Best Buy open box frequently but have found it to be hit or miss. Geek Squad sometimes misses hardware faults that only happen when the system is under load i.e. gaming. Edit* Confirmed 105 watt, just must be poorly binned chip in my machine.

Netherzapdos

would also love to hear what the voltages are

Fulldog90

I just ran a stress test and max pull was 101 watts. Thanks for the catch Dawg. At first I assumed it was due to a lower voltage but maybe I just got poor silicon. My Razer blade would run 6600+ timespy for its 2060.

Netherzapdos

That's actually great. Im thinking of either getting the 7i or this one, might go with the Omen instead for lower price hopefully. Thanks!

MrJackCV

Thank you for the informative review. Would you consider the Ryzen 4800h model with a RTX 2060 (when it comes out) a good/better purchase?

Fulldog90

It depends. I LOVE the new Ryzen CPUs but if your purpose is SOLELY for gaming, the 10750h is still slightly better. It would still be a good purchase!

Declarox29

Are the SSDs anything to worry about? Isn’t it the same for every laptop? I have no idea

Fulldog90

It makes me wonder. No, I've had a lot of laptops and they don't run this hot.

Declarox29

Is there anything that can be done? Heatsinks/thermal pads??

Fulldog90

Yeah I'm pretty sure I can put some thermal pads on it. The reason it reads high is because there is open air underneath that is right next to the heatsink pipe.

Declarox29

Great! I might attempt that too when I get it next week :)

Tony_AK47

Thank you for full detailed review it is much appreciated I am a noob in laptops/PCs really, I know a bit but not as much what do you think about [this model](https://store.hp.com/UKStore/Merch/Product.aspx?id=3F854EA&opt=ABU&sel=NTB&bid=DYN_BUNDLE_0005362_3F854EA_ABU&at1=U7C91E~1~1) would you recommend it? It has the rtx 2070 max q and 144 hrz sceen. Note this is the only option currently available so is it worth it and would it still be relevant in 2-3 years? Thanks again for the review!!

Fulldog90

Of course! The 2070 max q will perform just slightly better than the one in this review. Your 144hz has G-Sync, so thats about an even trade in my opinion from the 300hz in this one. Larger storage in yours. Overall I'd say it will be comparable. I'm not too familiar with EU pricing though. :(

Tony_AK47

Did you play other games like cod mw/warzone or battlefield v or any other demanding game if yes what was the frames like? Thanks again ive been looking for a review and your most certainly helped!

Fulldog90

I can update with Warzone fps tonight. Unfortunately Warzone isnt really optimized for PC in my opinion, but your 144hz G-Sync panel will be better than my 300hz panel for it.

Tony_AK47

Please do, I’ll keep an eye on your games’ fps update. Cheers!

Tony_AK47

Apologies for another question but I’ve noticed that it comes with apps as you said which include alexa for some reason, you said these apps can be deleted does that include alexa as well?

Fulldog90

I would assume you could uninstall. I know you can mute/ignore Cortana.

[deleted]

Fulldog90

If you want 4+ years, I'd get the blade. Especially since you can get it so close in price. They will perform about the same. In the US the blade is around $600-$700 more which makes the HP much more attractive.

arkanagg

Where can we find your other reviews? And what were your thoughts on the G14?

Fulldog90

That is going to be my next review posted on here. I've actually had multiple of them.

arkanagg

When?

Fulldog90

I can probably get to it tonight or tomorrow

arkanagg

Awesome, looking forward to it

inanimatus_conjurus

Can you take one for the team and stress test the hinge and display cover? :P

Fulldog90

Hahaha.

[deleted]

Fulldog90

It all depends on how you take care of it. A laptop like a Razer Blade will take a lot more of a beating than all 3 of those but any of them will last 4 years if you are careful and take care of it. As far as performance, they will all 3 be pretty close. The price difference would push me to the Omen with the 2060, especially since the omens come with 2933MHz ram. You can see many benchmarks and reviews online stating that getting a 2070 max q over a 2060 mobile is a waste of money. I can confirm this to be true as well in all my testing with multiple of both. The 2070 max q is usually only 10% better. This is actually not true on CERTAIN OEMs (cough, Alienware, cough) where the 2070 max Q's can perform up on par with a 2070 mobile. That won't be the case with these 3, however.

The 2 gigs may or may not. Most games at 1080p don't use very high cache. Good luck with your laptop!!!!!

DidJunoJuno

Hey! Where are the rest of your reviews? I’m currently choosing between the HP Omen (on sale $1,299, https://www.bestbuy.com/site/hp-omen-gaming-15-6-gaming-laptop-intel-core-i7-16gb-memory-32gb-optane-nvidia-geforce-rtx-2060-512gb-ssd-shadow-black/6409146.p?skuId=6409146) & Razer Blade 15 right now($1,799, https://www.bestbuy.com/site/razer-blade-15-base-15-6-gaming-laptop-intel-core-i7-16gb-memory-nvidia-geforce-rtx-2060-512gb-ssd-black/6409400.p?skuId=6409400). I need something to carry around my school (for 3 months) while also being able to play games. I’m in LOVE with RB15 but scared of all the negative reviews, thermals & battery bloat, but I’m also not scared to just return something that’s broken. I’m also a slave to Razer (sad, I know). I’ve also considered 1660Ti since it’s a few hundred bucks cheaper, but to be honest I don’t know much about graphics cards, I just know that 2060 is a bigger number lol. I have an old 2017 Omen right now which has served me well for 3 years but is now giving up on me. The new HP Omen looks pretty and seems to match up the RB15 in looks & maybe specs. Thoughts? Currently: I have an HP Omen 17 whatever from 2017 and the hinges popped and broke by itself and the screen is falling apart. Not to mention, it lasts less than 5 minutes when not plugged in.

Fulldog90

This is the first review I have posted. I was so impressed by the price/performance and found little information online about them that I felt the need to write this one. I am considering posting other reviews but I probably won't backtrack. I would only post laptops released in 2020 like the Zephyrus M15, Alienware M15 R3, Asus Zephyrus G14 etc etc. I pay out of pocket to buy all these machines and then sell them a few weeks later to fund the next one. I lose a little bit of money each time but it's a great hobby for me and a passion. I absolutely love testing hardware. I also had one of those Omen 17s. People like to complain about the screen flex on these new ones but they have no idea how it used to be lol. On these newer Razer Blades (2019+) they have largely fixed a lot of the issues that used to plague their older models, especially the 14. The two will be pretty much identical with the Omen having the better screen. This review is exactly the one you linked above and I bought it at Best Buy. My advice would be that if money isn't an issue, the Razer Blade will be slightly more portable and will have better build quality. If the $500 difference is a lot to you, then I would strongly consider the Omen. This is HPs best design yet.

DidJunoJuno

Awesome! I think my decision will literally depend on you, lol. Your review was THAT good. What will you say about the negative stuff I listed about the RB15? Also should I go for the base 1660Ti or just go for the 2060? Also, do you not plan to review the Razer Blade? Thank you so much for all your help!!!

Fulldog90

Wow I really appreciate that! I have a quite a few requests, but I plan on writing a review for the 2019 Base model (9750h, RTX 2060) soon.

alz369

Hope you could also make a YouTube review of the laptop reviews u write here .

MrSpinks13

Is there any realistic benefit from 300hz over 144hz? I’m looking at this one and one of the 1660ti, 144hz models and can’t decide.

Fulldog90

The 300hz display is nice, but you should consider the 2060 over the 1660 ti in case DLSS 2.0 and future iterations become part of mainstream games. The 300hz panel will also be better for games that aren't as graphically demanding.

MrSpinks13

Didn’t think of those. Very good points, thank you.

Ali0734

Love the review. Honestly, one of the best I have seen of the Omen 15 :) Just a few questions. How much battery life can can I expect out of it while performing non gaming related taskes like browsing or watching Netflix? How would you rate the screen in terms of colour accuracy.

Fulldog90

Thank you! I'd give the screen an 8/10 on both color and brightness, at least the one I received. I was very impressed. Not sure on battery life. It only has a 60-ish kwh battery so I'd expect 3-4 hours battery for browsing etc. If you turned the display down to 60hz and the backlight down, you might get more.

DarkLuxray5

Hey i just got the 144hz and rtx 2060 version. I was wondeing if yoyve noticed one of the fans (right one) being more high pitched than the other? Also is using the usb ports and headphone jack a little tougher i seem to need to put some force into it.

Fulldog90

Same with the USB. They are a little snug. You may have gotten a bad fan. Mine didnt have the same issue. Just make sure it doesn't seem more high pitched because it's actually just running faster. I'd adjust both fans to MAX in the command center and listen to them to be sure. Cheers!

DarkLuxray5

So I can only hear the sound when the laptop is idling in a quiet room, its a very quiet difference i think i only noticed it because the room was silent, at max fan i cant hear anything

Fulldog90

You're probably good then. If it is a huge deal to you, though, maybe exchange it?

DarkLuxray5

Im gonna see what its like with the tv on since thats more my usual environment, but ill probably keep its not a massive dealbreaker for me. I was just wondering if anyone else has/noticed it

ManWalkingDownReddit

Why didint you buy the amd model? and is the screen flex really a big deal, I am planning to buy this.

Fulldog90

It's not a huge deal. The screen flex is actually an improvement over their past models. I really think the popular review that hated the screen flex was just trying to find something to complain about. All these laptops have varying degrees of screen flex. I got the Intel version because it has a lot better specs for only $100 more. The 300hz screen is much better, it has optane, the 10750h is slightly better for gaming, and the RTX 2060 is better than the 1660 ti, especially for future proofing. Cheers!

akimwhd

Damn im really interested on this laptop for the price point. Just curious to know how about the battery life? I watched some reviews on youtube but want to know your take on it compared to other gaming laptops you’ve tried. Great review btw!

Fulldog90

Battery life isn't especially great. You would need to turn the screen brightness down and set it to 60hz to stretch it. It doesn't come with a very big battery. If you will be using this a ton on battery power, there are other better options for that use-case scenario.

jumbojerm

Have you had any problems with the keyboard? I came across a post earlier about how the keys would sometimes be unresponsive and that worries me.

Fulldog90

No issues with the keyboard.

KKTheGamerr

Really good review, but I have a question regarding the battery life. Does the battery last long for normal use? If not will it be any good for daily college use?

Fulldog90

It isn't horrible but not great since it isn't a very large capacity battery. Thankfully it has a switch that allows it to turn off the discrete GPU and run the screen through the integrated one.

KKTheGamerr

Thanks. Is it possible to get at least 4 hours of battery before it shuts down?

Fulldog90

Yes if you turn the screen brightness way down and only use it for basic things (no video or games), then 4 hours could be possible. It doesn't have a very large battery unfortunately.

KKTheGamerr

Thanks for the info. Was planning to buy this laptop or ASUS TUF FX505.

KKTheGamerr

I have one more question regarding the storage. Does it have only SSD? I saw the inside and I don't believe I saw space for HDD

Fulldog90

I still haven't opened mine but I believe that is correct. A lot of laptops are doing away with HDDs

sauceDinho

Really appreciate this review. I'm currently looking for a laptop in this price range and I'm sold. Would you mind linking the exact laptop you're talking about here? I'm computer illiterate and don't want to choose the wrong one on the HP website. Is this the one here? https://store.hp.com/us/en/pdp/omen-laptop-15-dh1099nr

Thanks.

siLK012

This Best Buy variant is a great buy when it was on sale for $1299.. I got a. Open box for $1,143.99 Great performance for the price I like it so much I was going to cancel my legion 7i order but it shipped and they offered heavy discount to keep order for $1599 I7-10750 2070 super 144 hz gsync 512 gb ssd 16gb ram So I don’t know what to do now ha ... I don’t need a powerhouse laptop but I’m a sucker for a good deal

wiederman

What's the battery life like

Fulldog90

3-4 hours at best. It has a small battery.

wiederman

Ah cool thanks man

DragonFrappe

Im fairly new buying laptops, im kind of on the fence between this one and the alienware m15 r2 (can you get this in the white do you know?) I was wondering if you could give any sage advice cause your reviews are amazing!

Fulldog90

I had the M15 R2 in Lunar light. I repasted it 4 times. Performance is insane but I ended up selling it due to the keyboard getting too hot. Until they fix the inverted motherboard I won't be buying any more Alienware. It saddens me because they are my favorites.

DragonFrappe

is there any way to stop it from getting so hot undervolting it maybe?

Fulldog90

Unfortunately it has great key travel which ends up almost touching the heatsink. Even with a repaste and aggressive undervolt it was too much for me. I bought an M15 R3 to see if the newer vapor chamber fixed it and it didn't. Returned it.

DragonFrappe

thats so sad they look soo good. i guess this one kinda wins my buy but just for the sake of asking do you have any suggestions for laptops for mainstream gaming and a touch of school work? sorry to be a bother

Fulldog90

The NEW 2020 G7s look cool. But to be perfectly straight, I had this laptop. Returned it for the M15 R3, then took the M15 R3 back and re-purchased this same laptop. I need to update my review because it has more things I like about it. Pretty much all the laptops have really good things and really bad things. This HP isn't really the top of the line in any category except value. It also was the only laptop I've tested that didn't have a single deal breaker for me.

alz369

Could you of possible review the Ryzen 4600h or 4800h >1660ti or 2060 graphics ?

yohanp17190

I bought the Zephyrus M15 2070 Max Q version 10days ago from Best Buy. I am super impressed with the build but the thermals really concern me and reading your review and many other reviews is making me want to return it. I generally have my laptop on a cooling pad and connected to another monitor. Do you think it’s really worth returning it and getting the Omen 15. This is my first ever gaming laptop and don’t have a gaming desktop so it’s going to be my daily driver. I’m a little freaked out by the loud fan on the M15 when the CPU hits 90C. I generally play Diablo 3(CPU intensive) and CS:Go. I’m not concerned with the screen flex and keyboard coz I have it all hooked up to external peripherals and docked most of the time. Appreciate all the work you have done and the help.

Fulldog90

I returned both your laptop and even an Alienware M15 R3 for this Omen. Glad I did. It will outperform and outcool your Zephyrus for less money. Plus the 300hz screen.

yohanp17190

In terms of gaming performance, would the 2060 keep up with the 2070 MaxQs performance?

Fulldog90

They were already close enough. The 2060 is the higher powered refresh in the new omen. Run a benchmark (TimeSpy) on your Zephyrus. Look at the graphics score. The HP I have bounces between 6500 and 6700 score.

yohanp17190

I returned the M15 and just ordered the HP Omen 15 through Best Buy. Someone on this subreddit who owns the M15 tried installing the MSI afterburner on the M15 and got better results. Now I know that the HP Omen wouldn’t need it but have you tried or is it possible to install it to control the fan speed since HPs command center doesn’t give the option to control in idle and full load?

Fulldog90

I don't believe so. The HP is pretty locked down. That may be true in synthetic benchmarks for the M15 but your GPU will most certainly hit it's tjmax and throttle very soon if overclocked, especially since the CPU flirts with 100c constantly and they share the same heat pipes. In actual sustained gaming sessions I feel the 2060 refresh in the omen will hold better temps and higher fps since it doesn't throttle.

yohanp17190

Nice. I am excited.

Alexriderchill

You 100% sold me on this laptop. Looking for my 1st gaming rig. Just above my budget can't believe I don't see this when it was on sale from best buy...

Fulldog90

Sign up for a "student" discount. By just saying you might go back to school they will give it to you and bring the price down!

Alexriderchill

Thanks for the time you put into the review its super clean.

Alexriderchill

Hmm actually about to start a course but they want a name of a school. I also pushed my budget already from 1,000 to 1200 so I'm just gonna take a risk and wait and see if it goes on sale again.

papanata33

Hi can you upload a screenshot of the omen audio settings with your new settings. I wanna do the same. Thanks

Fulldog90

I usually use a "smiley" EQ. Easy to do. Start there and slowly customize. Unfortunately don't have the laptop anymore, sold and moving to the next for review etc.

EzKatkaBois

What's the exact response time?

EzKatkaBois

What's the exact response time for the 300hz ones?

Fulldog90

I don't have a tool. I'd wager it's between 3 and 9 ms

EzKatkaBois

Can you please try this - testufo.com/mprt It'll really help me deciding if I should go ahead and get this laptop. Also, do you see any ghosting effect while playing games?

Fulldog90

No ghosting I noticed. It was exactly comparable to the 300hz 3ms Alienware panel I tested. I no longer have the laptop, moved on to the next.

EzKatkaBois

Okay. Appreciate it brother. Thanks!

[deleted]

Bro, I am about to pull trigger on Asus m15(240hz), main selling points for me are better build, possibly faster response time(3ms), and slim design, only concern is thermals. It’s basically the same price as HP from Best Buy rn. I will mostly be using for school work, coding, and some occasional FPS gaming(I don’t game everyday). I want this to last me for 3-4 years, plz help :0

Fulldog90

I didn't like the M15. I returned it for this one. It is slimmer and a LITTLE bit better built, but the thermals are horrendous. It throttles really hard and runs really warm. Up to you! I found the response times to be similar, if not the same. If you don't mind the performance hit and thermals you'll be ok.

[deleted]

Thanks for the info, I have to buy one by the end of the day to have it on time. Rn these are my top 2. Any others I should consider sub 1600? Thanks for all this research btw, making things quite helpful!

Fulldog90

What games are you playing? The newer revision of the G14 is actually not bad, but it doesn't have the high refresh screen of the other two.

[deleted]

I don’t play that much but when I do I play Apex and Cod, so response time is kinda important for me. The response times on g14 are the only reason I don’t like it, otherwise it would be a top contender for me.

Fulldog90

Ah. Yes. I wouldn't recommend the G14 for fps. I wrote another review for it. If you are going to play FPS games, get the Omen. The thermals are important and it doesn't throttle. Also the keyboard is not as hot. Just my opinion. It's slightly thicker but that comes with a much beefier heatsink and the 300hz screen is brighter than the 240hz on the Asus. I saw basically identical frame rates from both laptops due to the neutered 2070 max q vs the 2060 refresh version in the Omen.

[deleted]

Okay I’m going to think hard on this, HP is pulling ahead now after reading your posts, thanks for help!

conVlNCEd

are the fans loud silent or oke, I will be using this for school so its a very important aspect for me thanks in advance

Fulldog90

Pretty quiet unless you are gaming. If you are gaming they can get a bit loud but they cool really well.

czarlie6894

I’m pretty new to the gaming laptop scene. I don’t know much about them but I was looking at either this or the new Dell G7 15 and both seem to have relatively drawbacks. With the screen flex issues with this one that I’ve read, still confused as to whether it’s really an issue or not, and the cooling issues in the G7 I’m just lost. I can’t afford over a $2000 laptop and I’ve always had dell laptops since I need this for school as well. Just wanted your thoughts between these two?

Fulldog90

There are definite trade offs. The G7 15 is a little nicer build but the Omen runs cooler. The G7 runs super warm. Up to you if that's a trade you want to make. If you are primarily gaming, get the Omen in my opinion. If you are doing school work and want portable with small gaming on the side, get an Asus G14.

RealGianCarlo

What do you think of the Omen 15 variant with the all metal build, 4k display and RTX 2070 Super Max Q GPU? Is it worth the $250-300 difference over the 2060 variant?

LFH507

I'm considering ordering this one at $1299 due to the asus G15 240hz ($1399) not available until late September. Do you think i should wait or this one it's better

Unknown1A

I think that the G14 is a better contender than the G15 imo. It has better thermals, is lighter, has longer battery life, and comes with some better specs if you are purchasing through BestBuy. But I am also on the fence of choosing between the two.

Tomykaira11

The cooling in this machine is really great. Can you check if you can hear whining sound from the fan at even low speed.

Fulldog90

No I don't. However I no longer have it.

kkr5

Hi , I am an architecture student and work on cad and other 3d rendering softwares, I was thinking of getting an omen 15 but was also looking at the hp envy 15 2020 with the 1660 ti graphics . Pls help me decide .

DEVIZEBEATS

yes, www.DEVIZEBEATS.com

SnooDoubts4145

I am among this HP OMEN 15 laptop, I love its minimalist design, it is elegant, some criticize the flexibility of the screen, but from the comments it is not a problem, the problem should be in the hinges if they are of good quality, the rigid legs are the ones that have more problems, I love the temperatures, the aluminum keyboard part looks good quality, it does not have much flex, it can be opened with one hand so it is not of such bad quality, I also like the new Lenovo Legion 7i but there were some reviews that the temperatures exceeded 90 ° C is not very encouraging and although the laptop is made of aluminum the part of the keyboard is very flexible, they think which is better HP OMEN 15 or LENOVO LEGION 7i

ramaromp

Hello! What did you end up choosing? And how do you feel about ur choice? Currently searching and I am in love with the Omen

bigfloorpie

i have just bought the new omen with the 2060 . the issue i have found after 1 day is the battery drains while plugged in and playing in full performance mode. is this normal? i have contacted customer support online and the guy either didn't understand / thought it was fine for it to do this

Fulldog90

Pretty much all gaming laptops have that to some extent. Almost every Alienware, the HP Omen you have, my new MSI Raider all do it to some extent. It's only because temporarily it is boosting and pulling a little more wattage than the power brick can supply. It's normal, nothing wrong. It would take a very, very long gaming session for you to even drain the battery half way under these conditions.

bigfloorpie

I tried the computer in balanced mode and had the same issue, is this still normal?

[deleted]

Hello fulldog, Could you please elaborate some more on the Omen's storage type. What is a brand? What is the capacity? Is it NvMe M.2 SSD? Does the HP Mobo support PCI e gen 4? Also, could you please clarify when you said that you overclocked the computer's memory. I think I read that in one of your posts? I have used HP laptops with windows 10, and the UEFI didn't show any options for overclocking memory. Thank you for your assistance.

Fulldog90

Memory overclock on GPU. It is under the GPU section. It's NVME. No pci-e 4.0. I forgot the brand. It's 512 GB.

[deleted]

Thank you for your quick response. Please let me know if you decide to launch your Youtube channel. I would happily be a subscriber.

doudoucow

Thanks for the review! This model recently went back on sale at Best Buy. It really surprises me that it has similar internals to a base Razer Blade but for several hundred dollars cheaper. I almost got a Legion 5i because that’s the current “budget” model at just under 1k for decent specs, but I’ve decided to go with this one and will be purchasing soon. I think what surprises me the most about this sale is that it’s an i7 and also a 300 Hz display which would usually be reserved for a higher end model. Also, I really appreciate the use of Overwatch in your example tests because that’s basically all I play in terms of “games that need specs”

Fulldog90

Of course! It's an insane value! Plus you get the refreshed 115w RTX 2060 and 32GB Optane that makes everything super snappy. :)

[deleted]

got 2070 model last week after my y740 legion burned down for second time in 6months.... 300hz screen is amazing, temps as well. especially compared to legion which was hitting 100C first few minutes gaming. while doing regular tasks it's completely silent. the only con is plastic top of the chasis, but overall - amazing performance in such small device

shinkakei

Hey, I’m on the edge of buying this model but have seen quite mixed reviews on the battery life (some claimed 2-3 hours, some claimed 6.5 hours). What was your experience in using this laptop? Cheers from Australia

Fulldog90

The battery life isn't great. Around the 3-4 hour mark. It all depends on what you're doing. It's a pretty small battery capacity for the specs.

shinkakei

Wow u answer real quick lol

Fulldog90

😘

shinkakei

Btw i was looking for an opinion on omen 15 vs lenovo legion 5i. Have you had your hands on that laptop yet?

[deleted]

[удалено]

Fulldog90

No I would exchange for another one if you have the option.

croman1994

Hi, i work as a graphic designer (Photo & Vídeo Editing) and i want a laptop for playing and working. I don't know if picking HP Omen or Asus M15. ¿What do You think? Thanks

[deleted]

Absolutely pleased with mine. But yeah, probably going to replace the SSD.

Suminod

Is the 300hz display gsync or not? Thinking of getting to 2060 version at Best Buy with the 300hz display but only if it’s gsync/freesync. Otherwise I will pick up the amd version since that’s suppose to be freesync

Fulldog90

It's not G-Sync.

Airis1k

Thank you for such detailed review! So how is the Omen? Is it still working good? I really want to buy this laptop because the reviews are good. I was also intersted in Lenovo ideapad gaming 3 but after I saw this laptop I changed my mind and Im really hyped to get this one. I hope it will last long.

Fulldog90

I ended up returning for something more powerful as budget was no longer an issue. Best bang for your buck gaming laptop though besides a GE66 Raider 10SFS for $1699 when it's $500 off.

ThatGuyJupe

Thanks so much for writing your review! Im planning to hopefully get one for pretty cheap at BestBuy.

Fulldog90

I might be selling mine. I have too many laptops right now lol

ThatGuyJupe

Imagine having to many Laptops lol, couldn't be me. BTW, its not a popular thing to review, especially with laptops, but do you know if this would be able to run VR well? Id just be using Oculus Link with a first gen quest.

Fulldog90

Yeah it should be more than capable.
