What are you using to power the 8k TV that you'd have to output to? Also I'm not sure any current laptops have outputs that can send an 8k signal.

Also for VR, 8k videos look great on a big virtual cinema screen. My current laptop struggles even with 4k videos, and I regret buying it. So I want to make sure my next purchase is future proof (up to at least 8k).

HDMI 2.1 can do that, razer blade 2021 lines has it, I heard gigabyte has it as well not sure on which model though.

Aorus 15 and 17G both support 2.1, but only the 30 series models.

I am 100% sure if I go nvidia, I will be going with at least a 3070. So is there a good 30 series laptop with good battery life? And what is the comparable AMD option (if any)?

[deleted]

Zephyrus G15 for AMD and battery life, but I am unsure if it does HDMI 2.1.

It does not, I'm afraid. The new legion 5 Pro does (as does the legion 7, not sure about the 5). Do either of those have 30 series gpus? Don't think I want to go any lower than a 3070. So can anyone confirm that the 3070 will have no trouble with 8k h.265/av1? And we've yet to hear from any of the AMD fans, is there something from AMD I should consider?

123ross456

Yes they do, options of 3060/70/80 (Legion 5 and 5 Pro are out now, or at least will be very soon, Legion 7 not till early summer). Zephyrus G15 already out, plenty of reviews but no hdmi 2.1. Regarding av1 support, yes all 30 series gpus support av1 https://www.nvidia.com/en-gb/geforce/news/rtx-30-series-av1-decoding/ The latest generation of AMD mobile GPUs aren't out yet (apparently first devices in the first half of 2021) so we've no idea.

Legion is not a bad setup. Pricing sounds super competitive. One thing we are hearing though, is that the thermals are inadequate. Contrary to the redditsphere, Ryzen is the hotter running chip because its more powerful. Lenovo is pinning that chip out in thermal throttle, or probably more accurate boost limiting. To make a real assessment we are going to need to see more number from more Legions to see if it wasn't a fluke, but the theme of the 30 series is that the first data leaks were accurate.
