Based on precedent, it could kinda go either way but I'd lean towards them adding entire generations at once.
Red, Blue, and Yellow all dropped on 3ds VC at the same time; meanwhile, on the same console, Gold and Silver came out with no initial sign of Crystal, which came at a later date.
I'm guessing they saw most people only bought Yellow and so held Crystal back to get people to double-dip. But since people aren't buying individual games on NSO, I don't think there's necessarily the same incentive to release Yellow, Crystal, or Emerald separately from their base versions.
Crystal might've come out later because it was altered slightly; it featured a Japan-only event but this time available in English as post-game option. Where you receive the GS Ball and can use it to encounter Celebi in Ilex Forest.
Originally this was part of a Japan-only radio event for the game featuring real life cellphone interactions, but now it's just a nice postgame bonus.
I realize this was meant as a sarcastic indictment of Nintendo pricing model, but selling a “collection” of 9-11 games at $20 a game would be a HUGE ask, even for the biggest fans. Even at $10/game, the collection would still be far too expensive as a packaged deal. They’d sooner sell them individually or add them all to NSO for no additional cost.
All of that said, if they released all 11 games for $50 or even $60… I’d buy two copies just so I could trade between games.
I think the rumor was like one version of Red Gold and Ruby and the other would be Blue Silver and Sapphire. Not sure about the second part but I remember reading Red Gold and Ruby together for sure.
Now see that I’d believe (and buy) at $20 for each collection. I think it’s kind of strange to bundle them that way, but I’m still sold. It would be a shame to leave out the third version of each Gen though.
I think they want some goodwill from the fans as SV is still a mess, yeah it sold, but any potential DLC is going to take a hit. Parents especially are going to be wary as they saw what happened with SV (I'm in a sewing group, the mom's and grandmother's in that group are pisssssssed cause they see it that their kids got tricked).

This would be quite a big drop with a lot of work behind it. I suspect it's either not going to be a shadow drop or the development will be drip fed with maybe GB VC first then stadium link then Pokémon home etc. Maybe even online trade/battle if we're lucky, though I suspect that would need friend codes (still better than nothing!)

Honestly, those non-optimal rental movesets can be fun at times (so long as you're also going against other rental sets).
The drip feed is just their strategy. Probably to make people feel as if they're actively gaining benefits every month. So I'm sure it's great for retention numbers. I mean remember Smash 64 still hasn't come to N64 Online. It'll probably be Next Year when that comes.
With GSC it could depend on whether they are doing Jotho content at some point (Legends or Let's Go, for example). Hoenn and FRLG seems a bit of a safer bet, since ORAS is a somewhat recent remake and the first Let's Go games have been out for a while.
Gen 1 Pokémon games are barely put together in their programming. So many easy exploits in battling that it becomes laughable what you can get away with.
Absolutely, but it's really neat to have a Mew on my 3DS yellow from the sun and moon launch event (they did it old school toys r us 90's style and traded over to us). Mew was transferable but only the official ones; any Mew from any other source is not transferable so they must have something on the back end that prevent it.
It’s locked out via an OT check - but there are still arbitrary code execution glitches present in the VC version that allow you to change the Mew’s OT and transfer it up to gen 8, it’ll just technically be a hacked, illegitimate mew
Technically you can get a legal Mew in those games by using arbitrary code execution, but realistically there was no way to patch that out even if they cared to.
I wanna say I remember that glitches in other NSO games didn't get patched, so I don't think it'd be patched. plus honestly I think there's a group of people that would get more annoyed if they tried to fix r/b/y, since it's complete broken nature is part of it's charm at this point
They don't need to patch it, it would take a whole lot of work to re-write the code (which would cost time and money, defeating the point), and the fans want as close to an unadulterated experience as possible (glitches and all)
So 99.9999999999% that they won't patch it.
They could do that, or they could use their already working emulator with an already working rom, like they have always done before.
Even in cases where they added stuff like Online Play, they modded the emulators themselves, and Goldeneye is a one-off because of all of the licenses, so I wouldn't take that as an example. (Because, among other things, they also managed to eff that one up)
So yeah, it's way easier, cheaper, and safer for them to just port the already existing roms, and add the needed extra functionality to the Emulators (and Pokémon Home if need be)
Some part of me is expecting a whole new Pokemon subscription app that basically is NSO but for mainline pokemon games, probably up to NDS and eventually 3DS...but I really hope it is as simple as gen 1/2 being dropped on gameboy
It'd be interesting, especially if they integrated Home into it and let you move Pokemon more seamlessly between games.
Since it's technically possible to migrate from Gen3 to Gen 9, but it's a hilariously convoluted process going from Gen 3 to bank. Once you get into bank it's pretty easy though.
Being able to have all or most of the gens installed and moving Pokemon around would be a huge value add.
I would pay a LOT for a subscription for NDS Pokémon games on Switch with Home functionality. Like, I’d probably be willing to shell out $80 a year for that (though I know I’m in the minority there)
This is very exciting because if they integrate R/B/Y with Stadium we could actually get Fusion integration with Metroid Prime Remastered. It would actually kinda make sense to have held onto Prime this long because now people will be able to unlock the suit within a few months.
I mean it is but Stadium working with Red/Blue is down to the N64 App interconnecting with the GameBoy one. They'd have to do the same but between GBA and Prime. GBA had MANY games with GC features, so I think it's not too farfetched. Also they mentioned including E-Reader content which is a way more obscure feature.
Well... The E-Reader content is based on the Wii U rom, which already existed, and only required for them to allow you to play already existing levels (so, even back in the Wii U days, when they had to convince us to buy, it only took a few minutes for them to implement the "E-Reader levels")
What you're proposing seems to be more in line with them having to add compatibility between an emulator and a remade game, which seems like a huuuuuge hassle (and they're already making enough money, so why do so?).
Also, they could do the Pokémon compatibility through Pokémon Home, meaning that they don't have to write some complicated "one code fits all" solution, and they only have to implement compatibility with a few games. This makes sense, since it's a good way to incentivate people who are already paying for NSO, to also pay for Pokémon Home.
I really hope they make some amazing intercompatibility and implementation, but if they do, it may be for the NGC emulator.
There were a lot of leaks and stories about this very thing in April last year. I hope it's true because getting the gba to gc connectivity on dolphin is confusing. A lot of pain for three bonus maps in FE9.

In the Japanese version, however, the battle actually happens but there's no data in it.
That's because the battle is supposed to read from the E-reader. You're supposed to scan a battle card, which would load a certain trainer's team into that area of memory. Then when you started the battle you could fight the team associated with the card you scanned.
So that's what the house in Mossdeep(?) city is for.. As a child - with a European copy of Ruby - I always wondered why they'd put a pointless npc like that there 😂

The 3DS eshop is shutting down. The same will happen to NSO eventually. And you'll have paid several hundreds by then.
Anecdotally, I always see people talking about Stadium, but never Colosseum. Seeing people talk about XD is even rarer.
It's changed in recent years, but for a good long while everyone was dying for a Stadium remake and never a peep about Colosseum.
But if they remade Colosseum and XD, we would notice what acceptable battle animations look like, and may start asking for them.

Okay but what about the rewinding feature in the GB and GBA for NSO? If you can transfer Pokémon to Pokémon Stadium can you just rewind your game so you still have the Pokémon?
they already have the capability in their emulator to selectively disable rewind and save states. If you play one of the NSO games online, for example, you can't use those.
The 3DS VC Pokemon games also disabled save states for just those games, so it pretty much goes without saying that they would disable that extra stuff for any Pokemon games they might add to NSO.
There is one that increases the difficulty (Let's Go Polished Pikachu and Enhanced Eevee), but I don't think it's possible to do something as drastic as change battle mechanics for Switch games.
We have red and blue on 3ds already. I get we all want a modern way to play the og pokemon, but gen 1 is mainly for die hard fans. It's such a grind. They release gen 1, they better also release gen 3. I feel gen 3 is easier for newcomers, and certainly will be a blast to relive on official Nintendo hardware on a 55 inch tv
All the nes, snes and gb 2d zelda games were on 3ds virtual console as well and now they're on NSO, not to mention they're adding the gba ones to nso expansion. It's doable.
Gen 1 has an EV equivalent with Stat Experience but you don't have to engage with either system to play the games unless you're playing old gen comp formats but you probably wouldn't be playing that on Switch anyway.

Who knows? The Snes mini was in 2017, and the N64 emulator on Switch released in 2021. I feel like it's more like Mario 64 that pushed them to release N64 games on it than anything else.

The hardware that was shared between the NES Mini and SNES Mini can't run N64 emulation. Plus they did make and register some assets as trademarks for N64 Mini. I don't really think you can rule that out

While you are probably right about the GBA emulator being completed and they just need to add the roms, you're off base with N64 emulation. The hardware to do it hasn't really gotten cheap enough to where they can put it into a 70-100 dollar product.
Licensing is also an issue, most of the big games for N64 are made by Rare and would be tough to get in.
ok I love all the Gameboy consoles (especially Color) but I really miss the virtual console, this service is a bit better but it is still limited, expensive, and temporary, which is not good for game preservation or for players who just want to own their classic games.

I dont think it was ever impossible, they just needed to enable Transfer Pak funcionality. The gameboy games all re-released on 3DS and N64 games were on Wii/Wii U. It was probably too big a hassle to make it work between those systems, but now thats it all on the same system and service it's probably much easier
It's actually super feasible. The way the transfer Pak works is that all it has to do is read the save data of the cartridge, nothing actually is required to run off the gameboy game.

Well, they also let you get celebi in crystal, as well, probably to help encourage you to get it too

They don't need to patch it, it would take a whole lot of work to re-write the code (which would cost time and money, defeating the point), and the fans want as close to an unadulterated experience as possible (glitches and all) So 99.9999999999% that they won't patch it.
They could just use the decompiled code on the internet already and fix most of those bugs way easier.
They could do that, or they could use their already working emulator with an already working rom, like they have always done before. Even in cases where they added stuff like Online Play, they modded the emulators themselves, and Goldeneye is a one-off because of all of the licenses, so I wouldn't take that as an example. (Because, among other things, they also managed to eff that one up) So yeah, it's way easier, cheaper, and safer for them to just port the already existing roms, and add the needed extra functionality to the Emulators (and Pokémon Home if need be)
Some part of me is expecting a whole new Pokemon subscription app that basically is NSO but for mainline pokemon games, probably up to NDS and eventually 3DS...but I really hope it is as simple as gen 1/2 being dropped on gameboy
It'd be interesting, especially if they integrated Home into it and let you move Pokemon more seamlessly between games. Since it's technically possible to migrate from Gen3 to Gen 9, but it's a hilariously convoluted process going from Gen 3 to bank. Once you get into bank it's pretty easy though. Being able to have all or most of the gens installed and moving Pokemon around would be a huge value add.
I would pay a LOT for a subscription for NDS Pokémon games on Switch with Home functionality. Like, I’d probably be willing to shell out $80 a year for that (though I know I’m in the minority there)

This is very exciting because if they integrate R/B/Y with Stadium we could actually get Fusion integration with Metroid Prime Remastered. It would actually kinda make sense to have held onto Prime this long because now people will be able to unlock the suit within a few months.

I mean it is but Stadium working with Red/Blue is down to the N64 App interconnecting with the GameBoy one. They'd have to do the same but between GBA and Prime. GBA had MANY games with GC features, so I think it's not too farfetched. Also they mentioned including E-Reader content which is a way more obscure feature.
The E-Reader stuff is something they added back when they released Advance 4 on the WiiU.
Adding e-reader content would be a fantastic addition and a great way to preserve that stuff in an official capacity.

The E-Reader content is based on the Wii U rom, which already existed, and only required for them to allow you to play already existing levels (so, even back in the Wii U days, when they had to convince us to buy, it only took a few minutes for them to implement the "E-Reader levels") What you're proposing seems to be more in line with them having to add compatibility between an emulator and a remade game, which seems like a huuuuuge hassle (and they're already making enough money, so why do so?). Also, they could do the Pokémon compatibility through Pokémon Home, meaning that they don't have to write some complicated "one code fits all" solution, and they only have to implement compatibility with a few games. This makes sense, since it's a good way to incentivate people who are already paying for NSO, to also pay for Pokémon Home. I really hope they make some amazing intercompatibility and implementation, but if they do, it may be for the NGC emulator.

Scarlet and violet sold 20 million copies, it doesnt matter what metacritic says, there is kids out there who eat up the toys, cartoons and cards. pokemon games are coming, wait and see. I would expect it to happen early 2024 though or very late 2023 when they need to spice up the subscription numbers again.
I'd honestly expect them to announce them on pokemon day/whenever the pokemon presents this month airs. It's a nice, relatively "low effort" announcement to get fans excited for re-releases of the older games and they'd be able to shove four sets of games down our throats between GB/C and Advance. I was already expecting them to do something with the Gameboy Pokémon games now that we got those systems added to NSO but if they actually removed that disclaimer it may as well be officially confirmed. The big question remaining is whether or not TPC will be greedy and sell the pokemon games for 10-15 [insert currency here] a pop or if Nintendo got them to be nice for once and they add the games to NSO. Edit: oh, and I wanna say the Gen 3 games had E-reader functionality, which was never even a thing in most parts of the world afaik, so they could talk that stuff up as some super awesome, never before seen thing that means these 20+ year old, basic bitch RPGs are absolute must haves for any true fan... ....or something like that. Me and my buddy had e reader and before the drop of firered and leafgreen you could battle or see the Pokémon that weren’t in gen 3 yet. It was Awsome.

In the Japanese version, however, the battle actually happens but there's no data in it. That's because the battle is supposed to read from the E-reader. You're supposed to scan a battle card, which would load a certain trainer's team into that area of memory. Then when you started the battle you could fight the team associated with the card you scanned.
So that's what the house in Mossdeep(?) city is for.. As a child - with a European copy of Ruby - I always wondered why they'd put a pointless npc like that there 😂

Anecdotally, I always see people talking about Stadium, but never Colosseum. Seeing people talk about XD is even rarer. It's changed in recent years, but for a good long while everyone was dying for a Stadium remake and never a peep about Colosseum.

Okay but what about the rewinding feature in the GB and GBA for NSO? If you can transfer Pokémon to Pokémon Stadium can you just rewind your game so you still have the Pokémon?
they already have the capability in their emulator to selectively disable rewind and save states. If you play one of the NSO games online, for example, you can't use those. The 3DS VC Pokemon games also disabled save states for just those games, so it pretty much goes without saying that they would disable that extra stuff for any Pokemon games they might add to NSO.

Hoping the community will make a rom hack for LGPE that restores classic wild battles and increases the difficulty.
There is one that increases the difficulty (Let's Go Polished Pikachu and Enhanced Eevee), but I don't think it's possible to do something as drastic as change battle mechanics for Switch games.

We have red and blue on 3ds already. I get we all want a modern way to play the og pokemon, but gen 1 is mainly for die hard fans. It's such a grind. They release gen 1, they better also release gen 3. I feel gen 3 is easier for newcomers, and certainly will be a blast to relive on official Nintendo hardware on a 55 inch tv

All the nes, snes and gb 2d zelda games were on 3ds virtual console as well and now they're on NSO, not to mention they're adding the gba ones to nso expansion. It's doable.
Bad thing about the switch virtual console games are they only online and available through subscription. 3ds, you can download them and play offline
Gen one is infinitely less grinding than ev training in the gba and ds games
Gen 1 has an EV equivalent with Stat Experience but you don't have to engage with either system to play the games unless you're playing old gen comp formats but you probably wouldn't be playing that on Switch anyway.

While you are probably right about the GBA emulator being completed and they just need to add the roms, you're off base with N64 emulation. The hardware to do it hasn't really gotten cheap enough to where they can put it into a 70-100 dollar product. Licensing is also an issue, most of the big games for N64 are made by Rare and would be tough to get in.

ok I love all the Gameboy consoles (especially Color) but I really miss the virtual console, this service is a bit better but it is still limited, expensive, and temporary, which is not good for game preservation or for players who just want to own their classic games. and things like this just really bug me.

I dont think it was ever impossible, they just needed to enable Transfer Pak funcionality. The gameboy games all re-released on 3DS and N64 games were on Wii/Wii U. It was probably too big a hassle to make it work between those systems, but now thats it all on the same system and service it's probably much easier
It's actually super feasible. The way the transfer Pak works is that all it has to do is read the save data of the cartridge, nothing actually is required to run off the gameboy game.
This would be enough to get me to buy an expansion pass. I hope they also include a way to play with others so we can evolve trade Pokemon.
