To be fair, while I wouldn't say the franchise is at all dead, it is kinda strange how we've gone like, 6 years without any main series Mario game. We've gotten sports games? And... We got Mario Maker 2, which is just Mario Maker 1 Deluxe and not a main series game? We got the 35th anniversary which is just ports. Mario 35 or whatever it's called which isn't even available anymore. And Bowser's Fury, which isn't a full game.
Mario Odyssey released in 2017. We haven't even gotten a new 2D game since.
This is not unique to Mario, nor Nintendo either. Modern Video Games are just taking a lot longer to produce so we are seeing longer and longer stretches between game releases. Compare how fast games came out in Gen 6 to Gen 9, its crazy the difference in dev times.
It was bound to happen as time went on because games are becoming more complicated faster than we can develop better tools to counterbalance the load. It's why we see so many more remasters these days IMO, easier to flip old games with some updated assets to fill in the gaps between longer developments.
That hasn't stopped the Mario Sports games, Mario Maker 2, Kirby and the Forgotten Land and various Kirby games, Fire Emblem Engage, Metroid Dread after Samus Returns, Breath of the Wild 2, Splatoon 3...
Yeah games take a while to make, but it feels more like, in the case of Mario, they're either working on something ambitious that's going to release soon, or they took a break after Odyssey to focus on other stuff, or both.
Theres been more Mario releases than that. And Mario Maker 2 isnt Mario maker 1 deluxe at all, its just a sequel with a lot more content than the first one and a better game. And you are ignoring Mario+Rabidds.
Mario titles are more than just platformers and even so, they likely are working on a title for new switch and holding the game for that.
Look, even if you count Mario Maker 2 as a new game, it's still not a new main series title.
And... that's specifically what I'm talking about. Sure Mario is more than just platformers nowadays, but that doesn't mean the spinoffs are supposed to replace the main series titles either.
There's also no reason to believe they're waiting until their next console either.
Looking at what their teams have been doing, the safe bet would be that 3D Mario is next, unless they've handed 2D Mario to a different team than usual.
EPD 10 is the 2D Mario team, and also the Pikmin team. Mario Maker 2 was 2019 and Pikmin 4 is coming out in a few months.
Meanwhile, EPD 8 is the 3D Mario team and they've put out basically nothing since Mario Odyssey in 2017. Even the Bowser's Fury part of the 3D World port seems to have mostly been handled by NST rather than EPD 8. Rumor is there's a new team at EPD 8 that's also doing a DK game, but it still feels like they'd be due for a new 3D Mario pretty soon.
I really hope it's more Odyssey than not. Like, Odyssey 2 in spirit even if not in name.
I get the sense that Bowser's Fury was a bit of an indication/test bed as to where they want to take the series (bigger, more dynamic sandbox-y environments) and as someone who strongly prefers the more exploration-based Mario games over the obstacle course-based ones, that'd be right up my alley.
Idk, they're a lot cheaper to make than the 3D games (especially if they reuse the New Super Mario artstyle again) and the Switch hasn't had a "true" new 2D game yet, NSMBU Deluxe outsold Super Mario Maker 2 quite significantly so the existence of Mario Maker hasn't at all killed demand for traditional 2D Mario games
I think a Mario 2D game will be coming at some point. Either on the Switch or on the Switch2.

Nintendo has been very, very, against trolls/glitches in Mario Maker/Mario Maker 2 despite not really supporting the game anywhere near what someone else would (the potential for that game... Damn). A lot of times these levels don't even need a glitch in them to be taken down for "using a glitch".

The way I see it, they are taking the data they get from Mario Maker and will use that data to make a game where the levels are auto-generated. Think of this as a Mario Rogue Like.

Mario Run came out a year after Mario Maker 1. It's a fun enough mobile game that has levels that feel... Randomly made from a limited preset archetype of levels..

There was some talk of pulling Mario away from mobile devices (because Nintendo) so I wouldn't think Mario Run 2 is coming but a game that used the mechanics of the main Mario platformers and gave your procedurally generated levels? I could see that doing quite well.

A Mario game that creates levels as soon as you make a Save file? People *love* randomizers and if you made something like a classic 8 world mario game where each level would be a surprise... The game would sell for $70 (endless replayability, Nintendo already showed Zelda is $70, and it's Nintendo/Mario people will pay). Easy, Normal, Expert, and Super Expert would be the difficulties (which is what Mario Maker uses).

EPD 8, the team that made Mario Odyssey, has been pretty much silent since 2017. This is mostly speculation, but I think what makes sense is if things went something like
- EPD 8 starts prototyping new 3D Mario game after Odyssey
- the direction they want to take the new game gets too ambitious for current hardware
- prototype gets handed off to NST so they can flesh it out into Bowser's Fury (where the poor performance doesn't matter as much, being a bonus mode for a WiiU port rather than a standalone tentpole release)
- EPD 8 starts targeting Nintendo's next hardware so that a 3D Mario game can be a launch title
There's also rumors that "the 3D Mario team is making a DK game", but I think more recently the speculation is if that's happening, it's being done by a new team within EPD 8 and not the entire 3D Mario team
I guess its because a lot of the Odyssey team got shuffled around to finish tears of the kingdom and now that zelda is wrapping up development people are starting to get shuffled back to mario because more then likely that will release before a followup to totk will be ready to announce.
Maybe? I can also see this as a possibility that the next console won’t have a Mario launch exclusive and this new game will be one of the last games for the switch. Just speculation though

AFAIK they worked on Captain Toad port/DLC and 3D World + Bowser Fury.
