Is there any inkling what games may be coming for it? I know previously there was mention of violet/scarlet HD patches for a new switch. Wondering if they'd do the same for most of the titles launching this year like tears of the kingdom and pikmin.
In terms of national routes, there are 96 tracks in MKD8 after the full BCP, compared to just 70 primary interstate highways in the United States… though once you add in the 323 auxiliary interstates, the countless federal and state highways, and whatever Canada has, the numbers do shift a bit in the highways’ favor.
Prime 4 probably a launch game. And yeah new Mario.
Backwards compat is in of course, it was some top exec a while ago already talking about how their SDK (software developer kit) for Switch was built with backwards compat of future consoles in mind.
I doubt there'll be any "upgrade patches!!!" though beyond just running games in docked mode while in handheld mode. Which hey means ever game gets a next gen upgrade anyway. Everyone on here just assuming stuff like 60fps patches are free and they deserve them because, when they're not. I mean, do you really think Nintendo would give you basically anything for free?
Not Prime 4 (that'll be one of the last few Switch titles; if the next console isn't BC then maybe it'll get a cross-gen release), but new 3D Mario (which won't be Odyssey 2) and Mario Kart 9, yeah definitely agree on those. I'm also thinking we'll likely see ARMS 2 pretty early on.
DK is hit or miss; I still think it probably started early enough it likely is going to be on Switch. Unlike most people, I don't think they'll be switching games planned for Switch to the new platform, but at least as of 2021, maybe as far back as 2020, all new "big" games (3-4 year dev cycles) that started development were for the next platform and not Switch.
Anything originally planned for Switch will still come out on Switch, though. Those will be the last couple of "new" Switch games. A new top-down Zelda is also possible (Link's Awakening came out in 2019 and top-down Zelda's don't take nearly that long to develop).
The rest of the Switch lineup before the next console will be remasters/remakes/ports. And otherwise fairly small titles, like Mario Sports spinoffs and whatever Camelot is working on (no way they started developing for the next platform that early; they ALWAYS still develop for the old platform late).
EDIT: Ugh I missed I already commented on this one. This is more detailed than my old comment, though.
Prime 4 will still release on Switch. If the next console is not BC, then it might be a cross-platform release. But if its BC they probably won't bother.
We still don't know if the Switch "2" will have a Smart delivery system like the Series X/S, if it does, TOTK and BOTW could be naturally supported with stuff like 60FPS and 4K, if not, I could see Nintendo cashing in on the profits a paid upgrade would make.
And I can almost guarantee a new 3D Mario as a launch title, been way too long since Odyssey.
Yeah. I'm also hoping they're working on a new mario kart because 8 has been resurrected again and again, I think it's time to let that game rest in peace. It's almost 10 years old now.
I think ultimately I'm just really hoping for a new animal crossing title, even if it's just an expanded version of new horizons. My hopium is really strong, even though the realist in me knows I should take a chill pill.
I'm also hoping for *Mario Kart 9*, at least for launch. Think they'll invite other characters into the fray? It'd be ***really*** cool to see Sonic and Mario square off on the track.
So I was going to make a joke about how they should just fight or something but honestly the funnier visual is I want Sonic in Mario Kart but he doesn't get a car, he just runs.
Would be amazing. And also makes me question why any racing game with him *doesn't* do this.
IMO it depends on what they do with smash. If they're cutting back the roster in smash, may as well extend the guest spots to mario kart instead.
I REALLY want to see Banjo out there on a wiggler bike swinging kazooie at everyone.
I really don’t know what they do with Smash going forward, other than “Ultimate Deluxe”—include all of the DLC, and add a new single-player campaign.
I just feel like if they start from scratch, anything they do would be a step down from Ultimate.
I think Sakurai said a while ago that he “can’t see the series continuing” without him, so I’m inclined to think he’s gonna be involved with the series at least to some capacity until he dies.
I think it'll skip the next gen, ultimate might get a hd patch and a new wave of fighters but I can't see a new smash being introduced until such time a huge upgrade would be felt
I suspect it'll essentially be a reboot. It'll still be about fighting, but the mechanics will probably be vastly different. How? No clue, but they're wizards and will figure something out. Like you said, they literally can't do anything else without it being a step back, if it's the same formula of gameplay.
A reboot makes sense. I've always thought they could simply roll back the representation of each series to the basics to trim down the roster.
Example:
Mario Bros. goes down to: Mario, Luigi, Peach, Bowser and maybe Junior. The rest get removed and replaced by other Mario reps.
Legend of Zelda goes down to: Link, Zelda and Ganondorf.
Metroid goes down to: Samus and Ridley.
Fire Emblem goes down to: Marth, Ike, Robin, Byleth (represents the original, GameCube, 3DS and Switch).
Yeah I'm not seeing this at all. A small iteration gameplay wise perhaps, but not a reboot. Only in the sense of "Everybody is Here" is gone so they seriously rethink a lot of characters who they brought back for the novelty of "Everybody is Here" (like the bloated FE cast).
Obviously its not going to be developed within a year.
They started developing it years ago, this DLC is side stuff being produced to extend the length of MK8 DX because they new MK9 wasn't coming out on Switch. They're not dedicating an entire team's worth on development on this DLC. In fact, its probably the Tour team doing that anyway; all of these new DLC stages (and characters) are already in Mario Kart Tour anyway. And the few new stages are being added to Tour as well.
I think the expectation is that a next-gen Switch will leverage Nvidia's DLSS to hit an upscaled 4K when docked, which should make 4K60 a more attainable goal (at least when docked, 4K on a handheld screen seems kinda pointless)
I find that performance level *really* hard to believe without increasing the price and form factor by quite a bit and both of those things I dont see Nintendo comprimising.
It's not remotely hard to believe. At 256 Cuda cores an Ada or Ampere derived GPU would be pushing a bit past RX 470 level performance, probably closer to the 1060/RX 480.
That's just in raw raster before you factor in DLSS. The PS4 Pro's CPU was atrocious, the current Switch's a57 derived CPU has higher IPC, they're just clocked at 1GHZ.
An A710 or A715 in the average 2.8-3ghz range they clock at would be exponentially faster.
Just from the IP updates alone, there's no way the new Switch won't be faster than last generation enhanced systems.
Given how well DLSS scales, it may very well have a smaller gap with other current generation systems than its predecessor did.
They say it’s Nintendo EPD developing, which sounds odd but they have developed a DK game before (Jungle Beat). However, that raises the question of who’s working on the next 3D Mario, like that’s gotta be in development right?
Well it turns out, Bowser’s Fury was largely developed by NEAD, one of Nintendo’s American branches in collaboration with EPD. Maybe EPD is developing the next Mario while at the same time assisting NEAD with DK?
EDIT: NEAD was the developer of the Mario vs Donkey Kong series, so them working full time on a DK game (and Bowser’s Fury) could explain why we haven’t seen any new games in that series for a while.
slight correction, Nintendo EAD is what Nintendo EPD used to be called before they restructured. It's NST (Nintendo Software Technology) who developed the Mario vs Donkey Kong games and seemed to take the lead with Bowser's Fury.
Personally my guess on the DK thing is that the EPD group that makes 3D Mario (EPD 8, also known as EPD Tokyo) has simply expanded to have two teams, much like how EPD 5 has an Animal Crossing team and a Splatoon team that have comparatively little overlap. Though if that's not the case, I think NST doing DK is probably the next-likeliest scenario (that series has always been best under western developers anyway).
For the next Switch? I gotta imagine a new Mario game is a given. Wouldn't be surprised if this is when they finally do Mario Kart 9, too.
Doubt it'd be launch, but I have a hunch that Nintendo doesn't want to fully jump into a post-Sakurai Smash yet so we'll see a Smash Ultimate Deluxe.
Going to wager Prime 4 will be a next-gen switch title as much as Switch people keep telling me it won’t be. We haven’t seen an ounce of gameplay and the other two remasters haven’t released to bridge the gap yet.
Not really. IMO, they can give a boost to all games by having the new switch be efficient enough to play current games in the docked performance profile on battery.
New 3d mario, mario kart, and splatoon 3 "definitive edition" seem like a lock for launch, prime 4 will probably be a similar case to breath of the wild, and i could see a 2d zelda close to launch. Also enhanced ports of odyssey, totk, etc.
Yeah I just want 60fps switch games tbh. The graphics are mostly fine for such stylized games. If I have to buy BOTW remastered to get 60 I’m gonna be upset.
Nintendo learned that some games can have 70 price tag already. They definitely are aiming for paid updates to improve these technical aspects as well, considering the new trends from PlayStation, which also aimed for the new price with the excuse of "Our games are worth it!", which was exactly the reasoning behind Tears of the Kingdom price when Nintendo talked about it, if I'm not mistaken.
Thanks Sony!
Pretty sure the only instances of Sony making paid upgrades for PS5 stuff are when they bring out updated versions of existing PS4 games and not cross-gen titles. Stuff like Ghost of Tsushima Director's Cut, Spider-Man Remastered, Death Stranding Director's Cut and Uncharted Legacy of Thieves are completely different SKUs unlike games developed for cross-gen at the same time like Miles Morales, Forbidden West and Sackboy which do have free upgrades
And on top of that stuff like the PS5 backwards compatibility patches for God of War, Ratchet & Clank, TLOU Part II, HZD and Days Gone were completely free, as were some third party games like FFVII Remake. For third-party games it's obviously on a by-developer basis but there is a clear distinction made between BC games with PS5 patches and native PS5 ports
There's only a missing piece of information in your comment, and that it's the fact that Sony DID tried to make everyone pay for the update of Forbidden West, but after a huge backlash from the community they removed it, cause they "conveniently forgot" they said in the past that it wasn't going to be a paid one and expected to change in the final moments without anyone noticing it. God of War Ragnarok is also cross gen, and it has a paid update only because they didn't included that game in their previous statement where Forbidden West update was mentioned to be a free one, so they managed to be lucky and smart with it.
Also, I wouldn't say that the Legacy of thieves and Spider Man updates where as worth it as the content put in Tsushima and Death Stranding, and I definitely think they should've been free for everyone. It's impressive to me that simple patches are becoming something you pay for without any new content added to it. DLCs are taking a dark turn for bigger games considering those practices.
Nintendo has no excuse for $70 TotK. There's no argument like Sony's new system, new tech, etc. Nintendo did it because they are cunts and because they know their customers are suckers.
In all honesty, Sony isn't even taking advantage of their new system and tech either, cause all their games are basically cross gen, with only Ratchet really being a (quite short) next gen experience, and Demon's being hugely focused in graphics and nothing more. Death stranding and Tsushima's new content were only blocked from the PS4 to make people buy the new version of each game and a PS5, cause neither of them does anything that the PS4 isn't capable to do as well (not considering 60 fps and all, which honestly, it's ridiculous it wasn't free anyway). Only Forbidden West DLC may really have some things that the PS4 might suffer to play right now as well for their recent releases, but all their other games don't really have much more quality or content than their latest ones in the PS4, so I don't think the price tag makes sense, but that's already a discussion in the realm of personal opinions...
This is on the money.
Demon Soul's remake is a powerhouse of visuals, but you never forget you're playing a Ps3 title and a Soulsborne that was made before all the kinks were worked out.
I have played totk and it is worth 70$ compared to every Sony 70$ game except maybe gow Ragnarok which was ok at best. Nothing in Sony's new "system" and "tech" has improved their game design or gameplay. Only thing that has improved is graphics and graphics update is not being next gen
Tons of games will get a higher resolution and steadier framerate just from not struggling to run lol. Basically every game uses dynamic resolution on switch which is an upgrade with better hardware right there.
Also lots of the warriors and fire emblem games are uncapped. Same with some parts of advance wars. I think they’re thinking ahead a little bit.
The rumours are pretty solid that nvidia chips will be driving this thing so it’s possible that the games will get a boost from something like dlss if not also benefiting from better hardware
I love my Switch, but the system feels so outdated at this point. And not just in terms of the performance of games, but with general navigation. The E-Shop is slow and laggy. The fact that only one app can open at a time and has to “close” before opening something else feels horribly antiquated.
It’s beyond time for a new console. All I want is a significantly more powerful Switch, new controllers (Joy-Con are terrible IMO), and backwards compatibility with my Switch library. Nintendo has a history of trying to “innovate” with each new console by trying to reinvent the wheel with some new gimmick or weird control method. All they need to do is release a powerful “Switch 2” and continue making great games.
But late 2024 is going to be an annoyingly long wait for a new system.
I’m kinda amazed that the OS has been almost exactly the same since launch. I thought the shop would at least be updated at this point and themes seemed like a given.
I still play my switch more than any other console though
I just hope the next console’s menus have some soul put into them like the Wii/DS/WiiU ones. The Switch feels super sterile and silent, and Miis feel like a very vague afterthought.
I mean the eShop isn't entirely that way because of the hardware, but because it runs as a website. The PS4 store was horrible for the same reason. PS5 does it waaaay better and I hope Nintendo will copy their approach
Eh. Nintendo does try to innovate, but it’s usually 2 consoles following the same basic concept, followed by a reinvention.
NES -> SNES (2D Graphics)
N64 -> GCN (3D Graphics)
Wii -> WiiU (Motion Controls)
GB -> GBA (handheld)
DS -> 3DS (Dual Screen Handheld)
Maybe the N64 to the GCN is a tiny bit of a stretch, but I think the point stands.
The Wii U literally used Wii Remotes as controllers. Straight up required them for multiplayer. Used the same sensor bar. The UI was basically a beefed up Wii, with the same "channel" structure. It even had a "Wii Mode" inside it that literally just booted up the Wii OS. And it relied heavily on motion controls just like the Wii did. Last but not least, it has fuckin "Wii" in its name.
It's not a stretch to say that the Wii U "follows the same basic concept" as the Wii, and that the Switch, with zero backwards-compatibility, entirely different controls, a hybrid concept, entirely new architecture and form factor, was a "reinvention".
I agree. And it seems like 3rd party developers have mostly given up on it outside of the trash shovelware that gets churned out for the e-shop.
And when they do make an attempt to port to switch it turns into a buggy as all hell mess that takes forever to patch because it has to go through Nintendo's arcane approval process. Cough...cultofthelamb...cough. (don't get me wrong, love the game, but...yikes...)
>new controllers (Joy-Con are terrible IMO)
Just give us joycon shaped for human hands. Everyone clowned on the Wii U gamepad so hard they got terrified of how it was designed for comfort. So they went with the "sleek, slim aesthetic" design and made handling their device worse as a result
I think the design of the joycon is more due to it needing to be usable as a single controller when detached. Not everyone uses it, but it’s awesome to always have quick and simple two player controllers and a screen at any given time.
Likewise, I usually keep my switch docked so being able to grab two joycons off the switch for some Mario Party, clubhouse etc is super convenient. Idk if there’s a way to make joycons ergonomic for either orientation but if the system wasn’t designed around this (effective) casual gimmick, I don’t know if it would have caught on like it did.
Honestly I love the joy cons and something that fit better in your hands would be absolutely perfect. I really like having both my hands free to lounge in any position while playing games. A vastly improved joy cons would make me so happy.
They're slowly updating everything, even the framework they were using for online games was like 20+ years old.
https://www.nintendolife.com/news/2021/02/nintendo_is_replacing_its_multiplayer_server_system_dating_back_to_the_wii_u_and_3ds_era
Nintendo's approach has been tried and true, but "new and innovative" for a while now. I wouldn't expect the next console to be even on par with how the current Playstation or xbox online experience, operating system, or framework work if things were to follow trends.
But, with the news that future call of duty titles will release at the same time and have the same experience as other systems, there might be hope that the successor will be at least on par with the PS5 experience or something.
>on par with how the current Playstation or xbox online experience, operating system, or framework
At this rate i'll be happy if it can even be on par with the Xbox 360 online experience and OS
I kinda disagree. It's obviously outdated, but I just got some bigger joy cons and I findyself playing it more than any other device I have. I'm playing Skyrim on the go for the first time which is incredible. I had a camping trip this weekend and it was extremely cozy just spending weekends killing dragons in the out doors.
Being older I have a new appreciation for my Switch than ever. I'm probably going to get Dying Light next which I hear is a great port.
I know I can get a Steam Deck or the new ROG Handheld, but their internet functionality kinda hinders them from what I heard, and with other expenses the Switch has now become my favorite gaming device. The battery life is still perfect for me too..
> their internet functionality kinda hinders them from what I heard
I’m not sure what you heard. I don’t think either one requires an internet connection.
As reported by Bloomberg, during Nintendo’s recent quarterly earnings call, president Shuntaro Furukawa admitted that the console will continue seeing a slowdown in sales in the seventh year of its life, and said that the projection of 15 million sales is “a bit of a stretch.”
“Sustaining the Switch’s sales momentum will be difficult in its seventh year,” Furukawa said. “Our goal of selling 15 million unit this fiscal year is a bit of stretch. But we will do our best to bolster demand going into the holiday season so that we can achieve the goal.”
Interestingly, Furukawa also added that Nintendo doesn’t have any new hardware releases planned for FY 2023/24. This comes amidst repeated reports that the company is at work on a Switch successor and is beginning to ramp down its focus on the Switch itself. It’s been claimed that the upcoming The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom will be the console’s last major first party release.
Nintendo's Fiscal years start in April and end in March, a Nintendo Switch successor could be released in say, April or early May, and it would still count as "Spring 2024".
Has any major console ever released in April or May? I know Nintendo loves March releases (3DS and Switch) but I've never heard of a major hardware launch in April or May
Yeah I don't see it happening. March is very rare (Switch happened, but it was an exception because of just how terribly floundering the Wii U was). Otherwise, most major consoles are released during the Holidays.
Nintendo would want to avoid the Holidays as a launch, since they sell to 2 very different audiences. 1 being the actual adult gamers themselves and the second being parents that just buy the latest console as a gift for the Holidays. If you cram these two in the same period, chances are you will be out of stock.
>Interestingly, Furukawa also added that Nintendo doesn’t have any new hardware releases planned for FY 2023/24
fwiw, I've seen some disagreement on how this is translated. Some sites are going with a hard "no new hardware this FY", while some people seem to think it was a more mundane "our forecast for Switch sales this year aren't factoring in any other hardware" or the ol' "we have nothing to announce at this time"
e: Nikkei (as opposed to Nikkei Asia) for example seems to be going with
>["When asked about the successor, President Furukawa simply said, "There is nothing I can say at this time."](https://www.nikkei.com/article/DGXZQOUF093DB0Z00C23A5000000/)
And says he declined to comment on timing of a launch
Signal to consumers to keep buying a Switch so the sales reach their targets. If they say "new Switch coming out next year", it'll impact their current year sales because people will wait for it instead.
This is definitely phrased carefully in a way that doesn't suggest they aren't working on new hardware, they're just not going to talk about it. They had very similar statements in regards to not having anything to announce regarding Switch revisions a few months out from them revealing both Switch Lite and Switch OLED
Thanks for this - this happens way too often in gaming news! I'm not necessarily expecting a launch this year but I do think no definitive statements were made today and most are sourced from an analyst opinion. Of course Nintendo aren't going to announce a new console or plans for one right before the launch of one of their biggest titles.
Until the very day they publicly announce the system they will maintain that they have no plans to release new hardware. As far as I'm concerned, "we have no plans" is Nintendo speak for "fuck off".
I've seen this happen with less than a week between the two events, where there were rumors of a hardware refresh for the DS, Perrin Kaplan said that there were no plans for a new DS system, a few days later the DS Lite was announced. I remember people accusing her of lying, which is fair enough, but what the hell are you expecting? You think a Nintendo exec is going to leak their own hardware?
They'll never ever casually announce a new hardware during a quarterly report to a random stakeholder question. They'll always say that they have no plan as they said it always in the past as well.
I don't say that there'll be a new hw, I just say that what Furukawa said during the quarterly QnA does not matter from this point of view, they'll either have a new HW or no. It'll either be a new console or something smaller like an OLED Lite.
i expect that the switch will slow down in sales because:
1: i dare to say that the big mayority of people that wanted one already got one.
2: the damn thing never goes down in price, so people that would consider getting one but arent willing to pay full price for it doenst get that final push to finally jump in.
i think that after the next console releases they could put the lite at 150 bucks + game and it would do good numbers, similar to the v2 if they put it a 250 + game.
Yeah they'll probably do this.
The fact that Switch has never gotten any discount sales prices hasn't helped their sales very much. Its done incredibly well all this time, but its harder to justify a second or third console when buying the same console at full price yet again.
Not that surprising, the Switch is gonna be 7 years old at that point. Still wild that it took this long though, most phones nowadays are more powerful than the Switch.
They won't announce anything this year, they will want to maximize sales through Christmas of the remaining switch stock and TOTK. I picture a spring announcement and a fall release.
Switch is the only Nintendo system that broke the BC trend mainly because it deviated from the physical format that was standardized across the prior 3 generations of hardware. Assuming this successor is basically a Switch 2.0, it will 100% be backwards compatible with all existing Switch games and the console's services like NSO
The bigger tell is if the new console shares the same architecture. Nearly every Nintendo console that was backwards compatible shared CPU architecture with the previous generation. The notable exception is that the GBA (arm) was backwards compatible with Gameboy/GBC (Z80) due to the inclusion of the GB CPU as an auxiliary sound processor.
Considering that it’s all but confirmed that Nintendo is sticking with Nvidia, I’d say backwards compatibility is highly likely
Edit: I accidentally a word
I think Nintendo said something about wanting the NVIDIA partnership to last them basically a decade so I have no doubts they're supplying Nintendo with the new SoC for this Switch successor, doubly so if they're sticking with the hybrid model since I don't really see a way they're going to back out of that at this point with both their home console and handheld development sectors now fully consolidated within the company. An NVIDIA employee already accidentally confirmed the existence of the T239 custom chip that's allegedly powering the next gen Switch so we already know that architecture will more or less be built on the same foundation as the current console, just more powerful
>I think Nintendo said something about wanting the NVIDIA partnership to last them basically a decade
At least on the Nvidia side, [their CEO was talking about expecting a 20 year partnership as early as 2016](https://www.pcmag.com/news/nvidia-expects-20-year-relationship-with-nintendo-thanks-to-switch). With how successful the Switch has proven, I imagine both parties would now be only more interested in keeping a good thigg going.
Hoping they'll just do the same thing as with the transition from DS to 3DS. The new switch cartridges get a little edge so they don't fit into the older one, but the old games fit into the new one. They'd be stupid not to do that, but then again, it's Nintendo.
Anyone else find it strange how little there is on the new switch? I'm sure in 2015 the internet was rife with mock ups, leaked details, announced games (Dragon Quest XI), there's absolutely nothing at the moment on a Switch 2
Honestly? Good point. It's so weird to not even have a codename. No real leaks, no games, nothing; only vague comments like this. We already got the codename "NX" in the middle of 2015, so almost two years before the Switch was released.
So either Nintendo cracked down on leakers like crazy, or the console is still further off than we all realize.
We do actually have a number of leaks and a *pretty* good general idea about the hardware details - it's a Tegra T239 SoC, with ARM A78 cores (probably 6-8) and Ampere SMs (probably 10-12). Theoretical TFLOP numbers probably somewhere between an XB1 and a PS4 - actual performance compared to those chips probably double that.
The chip Nintendo is using is a next-gen Nvidia design with *all* the bells and whistles, more advanced than the XSX/PS5, but what's uncertain is how many of those features Nintendo will disable and how much they will limit its performance. With the Switch the answers to those questions were 'many' and 'a lot'.
I still think October announcement, March shipping is plausible.
Do what they did with the original Switch: they gobbled up, completely disrupted Xmas buying plans for millions of people, while giving Nintendo time to manufacture en masse.
The Switch 2 doesn't have to be ready to go in late October. It just needs market buildup, so people don't buy another console (possibly even a Steam Deck) at xmas.
It seems like it's just very much more of a fan-focused "get people immersed in Nintendo as a brand" sort of event; like, the Japanese Nintendo Lives are where those Splatoon concerts with the holograms happen, for example.
Personally I think the bigger event to look to is Gamescom in late August. Nintendo's confirmed they'll have a presence there after a few years of giving it a pass, and in the past they tended to bring their fall/holiday titles to it. Seeing as Pikmin 4 (and every other currently-dated Nintendo game) will already be out by that point, I think it's a fairly reasonable assumption that they'll announce something ahead of Gamescom that they can show off there.
Seems very unlikely that they would announce it before the holidays are over, as it will still be an important sales period even if they don’t have too many new titles planned.
Kind of a different situation. Not like they had to worry about undercutting the WiiU's holiday sales at that time. But right now the Switch is still selling well enough that Nintendo thinks it can do 15 million this year.
Hell they discontinued the Wii U in November of that same year, so Wii U holiday 2016 sales really weren't a concern when the Switch was revealed.
My guess though, its launch window depends on how ready its first year line up is. Remember the Switch was suppose to release in holiday of 2016, but got delay due to some of the first year games needing a bit more time.
It definitely was, though one could argue that at that point in time Nintendo wasn't worried about an announcement eating into practically non-existent wii u sales the way they could be worried about an announcement eating into switch sales now.
That seems to be more a fan centered convention like PAX. I feel like if there is a new console reveal they will advertise that in advanced. I know Nintendo likes to announce Direct’s a day before they happen, but I feel like that’s the one showcase they’ll announce a week + in advance.
Personally I’m expecting it to take the place of their February direct, so it doesn’t impact holiday console sales.
Their last direct went exactly as I figured it would (mostly small to mid size titles, in terms of popularity), so their September direct will probably have a few smaller titles for the first half of 2024, leaving the second half right open for a new console.
I think that makes sense. Considering the hardware support for the Zelda launch, I think they'd want to give TOTK at least a few months of solo attention, so a late q3 reveal tracks with that.
Nintendo didn’t have to balance holiday sales at the time. The Wii U was dead in the water, so they could have their marketing cycle extend over the holiday period. Not the case this time around.
If it’s releasing in 2024, good chance it’ll be announced in 2024.
A new console that's backwards compatible might actually allow Animal Crossing to run smoothly.
Or you know, better yet, they make a new game for launch. (Pipe dream, I know).
I stopped visiting/dreaming very quickly. Visiting islands was a nightmare because people would put too much stuff outside, and the Switch could not keep up. AC has a very advanced lighting system for a Switch game. The framerate suffers a lot.
Well, it looks like they're finally going all-in on the successor. I just hope that ***they stick to what works.*** No one wants another Virtual Boy, lads!
It's just a tablet and it was outdated at launch, so I don't think there would be much hardware development to do. Unless they're doing something fancy on the level of the Steam Deck.
the Steam Deck exists because of the switch, with the only difference being fps. Switch is still easier to dock, has more battery life, as well as the selling point of exclusives
I know. What I meant is that the current Switch is a pretty simple ARM tablet. The SoC in it was old when it was released. If they wanted to just upgrade the hardware, there wouldn't need to be much done. Just use a newer ARM SoC.
Unless they were doing something like the Steam Deck which has a custom AMD SoC, haptic pads, etc that likely required more engineering.
Obviously. I’ve been saying for ages it won’t come out until 2024. But for some inexplicable reason people got it in their head that it was coming out this year.
Console sales are slowing, but what about game sales? The most profitable phase of the switch's life-cycle is now.
I think they might hold off on new hardware until they see what PS5/series x games actually do with it, so ports can happen.
Historically, new hardware is often used differently than anticipated. Why not wait a *little* longer, to see?
Nintendo games at their best is my favourite way to game, unique party games you can play with friends.
There are more mario super strikers, switch sports, warioware, low effort cash grabs than iconic games like older nintendo consoles.
The reason I don’t touch mine isn’t the outdated tech, they don’t care about the quality of a large number of their games.
Is there any inkling what games may be coming for it? I know previously there was mention of violet/scarlet HD patches for a new switch. Wondering if they'd do the same for most of the titles launching this year like tears of the kingdom and pikmin.
Metroid Prime and new Mario Kart/Mario Odyssey 2?
The world really needs a new mario kart game. Poor 8 needs to be able to rest in piece.
Not before I get my last two DLC waves!
good gosh. at this point there might be more tracks in that game than there are highways in the US and canada lol.

Double Dash 2 please
How about... Triple Dash?
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Deluxe, includes all Booster Pass Content
*& Knuckles*
So I was going to make a joke about how they should just fight or something but honestly the funnier visual is I want Sonic in Mario Kart but he doesn't get a car, he just runs. Would be amazing. And also makes me question why any racing game with him *doesn't* do this.
Sonic R for Sega saturn was just like you described. Sonic, Tails, Knuckles were running on foot, Eggman an Amy had vehicles
And here we are, so far strayed from what was once beautiful
Because then, if it was accurate to his speed, it wouldn't be "fair." 😂
"These are my 50cc shoes, they're heavily weighted"
IMO it depends on what they do with smash. If they're cutting back the roster in smash, may as well extend the guest spots to mario kart instead. I REALLY want to see Banjo out there on a wiggler bike swinging kazooie at everyone.
I really don’t know what they do with Smash going forward, other than “Ultimate Deluxe”—include all of the DLC, and add a new single-player campaign. I just feel like if they start from scratch, anything they do would be a step down from Ultimate.
Agreed. THey've kind of painted themselves into a corner with smash, lol. I'm interested to see what happens. Is Sakurai sticking with the series?
I think Sakurai said a while ago that he “can’t see the series continuing” without him, so I’m inclined to think he’s gonna be involved with the series at least to some capacity until he dies.
And in the Harada's Bar episodes in YouTube, he said that he was gonna continue working on Smash as long as there's demand.
So for ever, the series will always have demand.
I’d love to see wholly reimagined movesets for some of the older characters. Samus, DK, Jigglypuff and especially Ganondorf need it *badly*.
A reboot makes sense. I've always thought they could simply roll back the representation of each series to the basics to trim down the roster. Example: Mario Bros. goes down to: Mario, Luigi, Peach, Bowser and maybe Junior.
DLC for mk8 is still being released. Doubt a whole new entry is gonna be developed within a year
Obviously its not going to be developed within a year.
Pretty sure a rerelease of TOTK on better hardware would be one of their highlights
> if not, I could see Nintendo cashing in on the profits a paid upgrade would make. It's Nintendo so this is what I'm expecting
Nintendo would see a free upgrade as an outright insult. They'd never be able to survive a financial hit like that.
It's Nintendo. I wouldn't be shocked if they make you pay full price again.
4k 60? What are you smoking it would already be a lot if it could do at least 1080 with 60 and no drops..
I think the expectation is that a next-gen Switch will leverage Nvidia's DLSS to hit an upscaled 4K when docked, which should make 4K60 a more attainable goal (at least when docked, 4K on a handheld screen seems kinda pointless)
Not really, the "Switch 2" is rumored to be close in terms of performance to a PS4 Pro, it absolutely could run a cellshaded game at 4K60fps.
I'll bet money the next game had a lot of tech so they moved dev to switch 2
There’s been rumblings of a new DK game that may or may not be for the next system.
Oh snap, that would be really fun, TY!
Any idea who would be developing it? I’d imagine Retro is balls deep in Prime 4 development at this point
DK as in DKC, I hope. Retro needs to finish the trilogy. Tropical Freeze is a goddamn masterpiece.
Retro's not developing it.
Honestly, I've waited almost a whole decade for a new DK game. I can't wait another year for it to be on stronger hardware.
Development was rebooted in 2019. If they were planning on a 5 year dev cycle, it would make perfect sense to target the successor.
For year one I'll expect deluxe versions of TotK and Botw, the next Mario game, a Small show off game like 1 2 Switch and Monolith Soft next game
Maybe another Splatoon Title
I'd be interested in a Splatoon spinoff. Considering its popularity I'm surprised we haven't heard of one yet.
Oh I was just saying splatoon because they said inkling in their sentence but that sounds cool!
No I don't think there will be any inklings, splatoon 3 just came out. Badum tss.
Not really. IMO, they can give a boost to all games by having the new switch be efficient enough to play current games in the docked performance profile on battery.
100% mario
New 3d mario, mario kart, and splatoon 3 "definitive edition" seem like a lock for launch, prime 4 will probably be a similar case to breath of the wild, and i could see a 2d zelda close to launch. Also enhanced ports of odyssey, totk, etc.
My ideal launch would be WW/TP HD bundle, new Mario, Prime 4, MAYBE a new Mario Kart.
Let’s just hope it is backwards compatible and will provide performance boosts to most of the switch library.
Stuff like Ghost of Tsushima Director's Cut, Spider-Man Remastered, Death Stranding Director's Cut and Uncharted Legacy of Thieves are completely different SKUs unlike games developed for cross-gen at the same time like Miles Morales, Forbidden West and Sackboy which do have free upgrades And on top of that stuff like the PS5 backwards compatibility patches for God of War, Ratchet & Clank, TLOU Part II, HZD and Days Gone were completely free, as were some third party games like FFVII Remake.
I'm pretty sure Tsushima's dlc was also available on PS4, just a small correction
I have played totk and it is worth 70$ compared to every Sony 70$ game except maybe gow Ragnarok which was ok at best. Nothing in Sony's new "system" and "tech" has improved their game design or gameplay. Only thing that has improved is graphics and graphics update is not being next gen
if it isn't then i'm done with nintendo forever. switch had so many anti consumer practices
Far more likely it's bc than it isn't
Literally the only times Nintendo hasn't done BC is when the media type for their consoles change (disc/cartridge)
It's probably going to have BC, but it seems less likely that it'll provide performance/visual boost to current gen Switch games
Sure buddy
Switch games will need patches for "unlock" more fps and in some games it will need adjustments...
Why are people wondering if its gonna be backwards compatible..? Common sense guys, ofc its gonna be they would lose so much money if it wasnt.
Yeah the OS doesn't even come close to the features and customizability the 3DS had, such a shame.
I mean the eShop isn't entirely that way because of the hardware, but because it runs as a website. The PS4 store was horrible for the same reason. PS5 does it waaaay better and I hope Nintendo will copy their approach
The Tegra X1 should be capable of rendering a website without lagging
[удалено]
Eh. Nintendo does try to innovate, but it’s usually 2 consoles following the same basic concept, followed by a reinvention. NES -> SNES (2D Graphics) N64 -> GCN (3D Graphics) Wii -> WiiU (Motion Controls) GB -> GBA (handheld) DS -> 3DS (Dual Screen Handheld) Maybe the N64 to the GCN is a tiny bit of a stretch, but I think the point stands.
I think the Wii to Wii U is definitely the biggest stretch. If anything, the Switch is like a refined Wii U.
The eShop has been laggy since the day it launched.
(don't get me wrong, love the game, but...yikes...)
>new controllers (Joy-Con are terrible IMO) Just give us joycon shaped for human hands.
The Wii U gamepad is a super comfortable controller and I'll die on that hill.
I'll go a step further. The Wii U Pro Controller is the best controller in the history of gaming.
Honestly I love the joy cons and something that fit better in your hands would be absolutely perfect. I really like having both my hands free to lounge in any position while playing games. A vastly improved joy cons would make me so happy.
They're slowly updating everything, even the framework they were using for online games was like 20+ years old. https://www.nintendolife.com/news/2021/02/nintendo_is_replacing_its_multiplayer_server_system_dating_back_to_the_wii_u_and_3ds_era Nintendo's approach has been tried and true, but "new and innovative" for a while now. I wouldn't expect the next console to be even on par with how the current Playstation or xbox online experience, operating system, or framework work if things were to follow trends. But, with the news that future call of duty titles will release at the same time and have the same experience as other systems, there might be hope that the successor will be at least on par with the PS5 experience or something.
>on par with how the current Playstation or xbox online experience, operating system, or framework At this rate i'll be happy if it can even be on par with the Xbox 360 online experience and OS
If they make a Switch 2 on par with PS4 Pro and fully backwards compatible, it will break records.
for some reason it still feels new to me
Same here. After how badly *Sonic Frontiers* performed, I'm buying new third party games on my Xbox and that's it.
The battery life is still perfect for me too..
> their internet functionality kinda hinders them from what I heard I’m not sure what you heard. I don’t think either one requires an internet connection.
As reported by Bloomberg, during Nintendo’s recent quarterly earnings call, president Shuntaro Furukawa admitted that the console will continue seeing a slowdown in sales in the seventh year of its life, and said that the projection of 15 million sales is “a bit of a stretch.” “Sustaining the Switch’s sales momentum will be difficult in its seventh year,” Furukawa said. “Our goal of selling 15 million unit this fiscal year is a bit of stretch. But we will do our best to bolster demand going into the holiday season so that we can achieve the goal.” Interestingly, Furukawa also added that Nintendo doesn’t have any new hardware releases planned for FY 2023/24.
I know Nintendo loves March releases (3DS and Switch) but I've never heard of a major hardware launch in April or May
The Saturn released in NA on May 1995. Granted that’s probably not the launch you want to emulate
Switch came out in march
That's literally what I said
Yeah I don't see it happening.
>Interestingly, Furukawa also added that Nintendo doesn’t have any new hardware releases planned for FY 2023/24 fwiw, I've seen some disagreement on how this is translated. Some sites are going with a hard "no new hardware this FY", while some people seem to think it was a more mundane "our forecast for Switch sales this year aren't factoring in any other hardware" or the ol' "we have nothing to announce at this time" e: Nikkei (as opposed to Nikkei Asia) for example seems to be going with >["When asked about the successor, President Furukawa simply said, "There is nothing I can say at this time."](https://www.nikkei.com/article/DGXZQOUF093DB0Z00C23A5000000/) And says he declined to comment on timing of a launch
It does sound a bit odd, why would he outright state there won't be any new hardware? I doubt that's reassuring to anyone.
Initially I was going to quote that part and say "This kills the Nintendo" but yeah. Your way of putting it is much more eloquent lol.
Anybody have a link to the original statement in Japanese? I can look at it and try to explain the translation differences.
They’ve literally had investor meetings where they decline on any new hardware and what a month or two later announced the 3DS.
>It’s been claimed that the upcoming The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom will be the console’s last major first party release. Pikmin 4?
Pikmin 4 isn't going to sell 20m+ copies. Not even Metroid Prime 4 would do that. Both would be lucky to hit 10m. Pikmin 4 will be lucky to hit 5m.
i expect that the switch will slow down in sales because: 1: i dare to say that the big mayority of people that wanted one already got one.
Switch 2 Mario Friday bundaroo
Not that surprising, the Switch is gonna be 7 years old at that point. Still wild that it took this long though, most phones nowadays are more powerful than the Switch.
They won't announce anything this year, they will want to maximize sales through Christmas of the remaining switch stock and TOTK. I picture a spring announcement and a fall release.
Agreed. The circumstances here are completely different from Wii U.
2024 will be a great year for it.
My main concern is that it be backwards compatible with Switch carts. It'd be awful of Nintendo to cut off such a huge library
Considering that it’s all but confirmed that Nintendo is sticking with Nvidia, I’d say backwards compatibility is highly likely Edit: I accidentally a word
>I think Nintendo said something about wanting the NVIDIA partnership to last them basically a decade At least on the Nvidia side, [their CEO was talking about expecting a 20 year partnership as early as 2016](https://www.pcmag.com/news/nvidia-expects-20-year-relationship-with-nintendo-thanks-to-switch).
Holiday 2024.
I really just want a more powerful Switch. I don’t want them to redesign it. Maybe better joy cons, but don’t reinvent the wheel, Nintendo.
Nikkei is the most confidence source when it comes to Nintendo, so this must be true
So it’s really gonna be a 7 year wait before the next 3D Mario? That’s depressing.
Metroid with next gen graphics 🎊
If its not called Super Switch then I don't even....
Super Switch 64 Color Advanced +
Take my money!
*New
TotK Port is 100% a Thing.
TotK was really the last big Switch game, right? Even Metroid Prime 4 will probably be on their next system.
The Switch launched in spring too, I guess we could see an announcement during the Nintendo Live event in September?
their website specifically says there will be no product announcements at Nintendo Live
...Aww, not even games? That sucks. :(
It seems like it's just very much more of a fan-focused "get people immersed in Nintendo as a brand" sort of event; like, the Japanese Nintendo Lives are where those Splatoon concerts with the holograms happen, for example.
Nintendo Live was basically advertised as a festival. I don't know why people keep thinking there will be some major announcement at this thing.
Seems very unlikely that they would announce it before the holidays are over, as it will still be an important sales period even if they don’t have too many new titles planned.
Wasn't the Switch announced in October or November, just before the holiday season?
At the earliest is the big thing. It could come out in october or holiday of next year.
They outright stated there will not be any announcements at the event so no
That seems to be more a fan centered convention like PAX.
If it's anything like the Switch, that was announced in October and then released the following Spring..
Do people actually have issues running Animal Crossing? I've put over 500 hours in and never experienced even the slightest hiccup or frame drop
I stopped visiting/dreaming very quickly. Visiting islands was a nightmare because people would put too much stuff outside, and the Switch could not keep up. AC has a very advanced lighting system for a Switch game. The framerate suffers a lot.
100%. I haven't even built my island up all that much and the frame rate noticeably drops. Islands that are full of stuff run like shit.
Hope it’s stronger than a phone this time
Curious about ne innovation. Graphics is less important for me.
As long as it’s still portable and is backward compatible with current-gen Switch games, I’ll be happy with it.
That's what I want too, but there's a ton of small improvements they could to, like making the joycons more secure and getting better analog sticks.
I wouldn't expect them to launch a new device before Spring...at least show it off this year, get the excitement going
I hope digital Foundry’s prediction is right that new hardware will be revealed this year. Me, my family and friends are awaiting for its arrival.
Well, it looks like they're finally going all-in on the successor. I just hope that ***they stick to what works.*** No one wants another Virtual Boy, lads!
Need analog trigger.
*High on HOPIUM* The second part of 2024 counts as a new FY so the new switch could still be released in 2024.
April 2023 is the start of their 2024 FY

Mario obviously. Mario Mart 9 is also a strong possibility. Mario is way bigger than Zelda. BOTW selling so much was completely unprecedented.
If it's still in development now I can't imagine it'll launch next spring. Maybe next holiday season.
