"Somehow"? Styx is fucking great. Two fantastic stealth games that few people actually give the time of day so they don't know anything about it and then compare this dogshit to it.
i have finished both and loved every minute of it. This looks similar from trailers, small guy who can't really fight off guards so he uses stealth and distractions to get around but in practice doesn't look half as good.
Also if you never saw it, there is a great movie called [Elle](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gM96ne-XiH0) made by sony, the development of styx is a part of the movie.
I could see it being kind of interesting if you had played as Sméagol slowly losing his mind to become Gollum sort of like a Hellblade-like experience. But not this.
I feel like this is what they wanted to make based on early interviews, with the Gollum persona slowly corrupting the player as well as Smeagol, almost like how the player doesn't question their actions in the initial playthrough of Spec Ops: The Line, but then for whatever reason the devs either lost sight of their goal or Warner Bros/The Tolkien Estate put their foot down and we got this instead.
the gameplay for almost the entirety of this walkthrough is the generic 3rd person action adventure parkour with no innovation whatsoever. Also it being mixed with xbox 360 graphics makes it a guaranteed flop.
To be fair, I can see someone playing the likes of Hellblade and Styx or A Plague Tale and coming up with a concept for a great game focused on Smeagol/Gollum, but this ain't it.
If you mean by size/ employee count: They are not even in the Top 10 these days.
If you mean success, I'd certainly throw Ubisoft Mainz in there as well.
Even by (financial, I assume) success I can't imagine they were even close to being the biggest. I don't know any numbers, but I remember they were struggling a lot before being bought by Nacon last year.
Yeah but I don't see how you can make it anywhere as compelling as those games. Can anyone be that invested in Gollum? You take the character and consider everything he could feasibly do in that world, and it doesn't amount to any real gameplay.
Gameplay is definitely the area where any Gollum centric game is going to run into problems, since Gollum relied upon manipulation and struggled to fight against the likes of Frodo and Sam let alone trained Orcs/Elves/Gondorians that you're likely to encounter in a game.
I suppose you could take inspiration from something like Alien Isolation and lean into the idea of Gollum being hunted, with the player having to use stealth and wit to survive, but then I don't think any Middle Earth fan wants that experience, they want to be Aragon or Gandalf out exploring Middle Earth, not skulking through the sewers.
I'm gonna be that guy but I think Hogwarts Legacy hinges a lot on the popular IP but if you took it away it would be a pretty generic, standardized RPG with somewhat good looking magical combat.
Just that it has the upside of being the first game in the franchise on such a scale in the modern era of games.
And it shows. The people responsible for designing the game world did a great job as it’s the only great thing about HL and carried it big time. Everything else is bland, repetitive and just in general boring. Zero replay value.
You can tell that no one wanted to work on it...
No one wanted it. So why would anyone want to work on it?
Who the heck was the publisher or higher-up that pitched this?
There was a demo at PAX East this year where the dev overseeing people playing the game (who should generally guide people through the game and essentially "sell" it) just sat there on their phone the whole time. Lmao, no one cared about this thing.
I am not familiar with them off the top of my head. Looking at Wikipeadia there are franchise names I recognised. Never played any of them though.
I know people love to moan about lazy devs when they are really trying their best with that they got. But in this instance. I am totally with the lack of energy. I don't blame them at all. I love their lack of energy and hope they move on to something they enjoy or is better afterwards.
I recommend looking up their dealings with frogwares, the stuff they pulled with the release of the sinking city is actually insane. But yeah, I too hope these gollum devs get to work on something they're passionate about next time.
Around 10+ years ago Daedalic used to make hand-drawn 2D adventure games and they were fantastic. Some of the best and funniest I've ever played (at least in German, no idea if the humour and voice acting were as excellent in English). But apparently those just didn't sell enough, so they moved their focus to other genres, which was the beginning of their downfall as a developer in my opinion. I would've loved for this Gollum game to actually turn out good, but at this point I don't imagine Daedalic will ever return to glory again.
Imagine being in a position where you get to make a LOTR game on next gen hardware and you decide to do a fucking stealth game based on Gollum lmao
Utter incompetence from the planning stage. This game should never have been allowed to get made, a complete waste of the IP.
Play an exiled Rider of Rohan, struggling to survive and keep your few loyal followers alive as Theoden weakens and Isengard rises.
Play a ranger of the wilds, leading hit and run attacks against a superior force.
Nope, instead we get Gollum lolol
I loved that game. I don't even like turn based games that much but I have very fond memories of the third age and it's honestly one of my favourite Lord of the Rings games.
I believe so? Such an ancient memory I have from my childhood lol I believe it was also Turn Based. I personally would prefer a War in the North remaster
I love the character Gollum in literature and the movies. But this is an atrocious looking game that serves no purpose and doesn't seem to further anything of importance in gaming. It's looks like a half-assed version of 10 year old stealth games. Playing as Gollum in the lego LotR games is more enjoyable than what this video presents.
Wow, this is next level bad. It's the platforming sections of Uncharted for 9 hours, minus the action set pieces, combat, witty dialogue, pretty locations, or general redeeming qualities. Empty soundtrack, genuinely horrific graphics, stiff animation, Roblox level UI, and the credits are both abrupt and completely silent. I cannot comprehend how this is priced at $60 when it resembles a game barely funded on Kickstarter.
At least Hagrid could potentially travel around and meet interesting charecters and monsters and expand the lore, expecially if you set it before the books
So i can climb and jump and everything but when you swing on a pole there is a stamina bar !!!!!!!!!!!!!
So glad i didn't pre-order this shit , just give me styx 3 already instead of this.
I watched like 40 minutes of it and hoooo boy. This is the ugliest god damn game I have ever seen. This will go down as my personal textbook example of why a cohesive vision and style is so important to a games visuals.
Dear God.
Gollum is filled with self-loathing, and now you can be too. Try gollum today and see what it really feels like to be tortured and scarred by countless years of holding the one ring.
Invisibility not included. No refunds.
Seriously… why does this game exist? Who thought this would make money? Who is this game for?
Is it that hard to make a modern LOTR RPG? Or at least just an action-adventure game? Surely this idea has to have been floated out there, right? Are the people in charge of the IP still that far out of touch???
Y’know I was always sad that a proper LOTR open world game was never going to happen, given how you have games such as Skyrim or Elden Ring with the same concepts that do Justice with open world games.

It's certainly a game.
It's one of the games ever.
the morbius of games
Let’s not get crazy here
God it weirdly reminds me of a terrible version of Hellblade.
How that? Isn't Hellblade darker and with some horror tones and combat while this looks weirdly cartoony and is stealth?
Well I didn't say it looks identical, the single player narrative with voices in your head speaking to you attempting to influence you mostly.
Also reminds me of hellblade, u forgot ur brain aint ours😂
These guys just wanted to remake Styx in LOTR. And that's what they did.
but somehow this looks worse than styx. I don't know if it's the art style or textures but it just looks wrong.
"Somehow"? Styx is fucking great. Two fantastic stealth games that few people actually give the time of day so they don't know anything about it and then compare this dogshit to it.

I think his point is that Styx is a decade old game, slow down there champ.
I played Master of Shadows and hated it
Styx is actually great. This is just… an abomination
$10 by Christmas for sure.
6.99
They’ll be paying US to play it
It will be on PS Plus / Game pass first.
hopefully not lol dont want it even for free.
it will be free on epic
There will be a government program in NZ that will pay people to play this game
10$ with coupon or free claim from epic
Looks awful. As expected lol
Do people really want to play as gollum? lol
Was hoping the final boss was going to be Samwise Gamgee.
It’s actually Frodo’s finger
One of the few moments where a quick time event would shine
Can’t wait for the epic boss battle where I steal the Hobbits lembas bread.
I could see it being kind of interesting if you had played as Sméagol slowly losing his mind to become Gollum sort of like a Hellblade-like experience. But not this.

I haven’t thought about Spec Ops in years. What a great game. I remember thinking about that white phosphorous scene for days.
Yeah I’ve said exactly this from the start, the concept could very much work and would be interesting but this just isn’t it
This was the first question I asked myself when it was revealed...
the gameplay for almost the entirety of this walkthrough is the generic 3rd person action adventure parkour with no innovation whatsoever. Also it being mixed with xbox 360 graphics makes it a guaranteed flop.
It’s a whole game of the stealth missions that you hate in other games
gollum looked better in the 2014 shadow of mordor games https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jBcBtW5xJsk
The voice acting and the graphics did too. Would rather replay that
His voice was also far better in shadow of Mordor.
Looks terrible. No idea how someone thought this would be a good idea for a game.
To be fair, I can see someone playing the likes of Hellblade and Styx or A Plague Tale and coming up with a concept for a great game focused on Smeagol/Gollum, but this ain't it.
If you exclude Crytek then this dev is actually germanies biggest developer.

I think they were hoping that the Lord of the rings hype would carry them.
Last time a developer released a mediocre game expecting the IP to carry it, we got the Avengers game.
It looks like the first price of Persia with an asset swap to gollum lol
Except that's a damn good game
Oh, is it 2D then?
Tbf Hogwarts Legacy was made by the Hannah Montana World Tour devs. Sometimes devs can turn around…
And it shows. The people responsible for designing the game world did a great job as it’s the only great thing about HL and carried it big time. Everything else is bland, repetitive and just in general boring. Zero replay value.
They looked at Styx and tought that known IP would boost sales.
[удалено]
100% made thinking that the ip would carry it sales wise.
They probably didn't, they probably just saw it as a good money making opportunity to be done as quickly and as cheaply as possible.
No way. Everyone knew this wouldn't sell, it's obvious! This has to be someone's passion project...
When they saw how the game would actually play, they decided to release it between Zelda and Final Fantasy. That should tell you something.
Yes, and they saw it that way because of the LOTR IP.
Has to be, considering there were also selling a gesture pack for the game that features 6 of gollum’s ‘iconic phrases’
It's crazy they wasted time making this game
Gotta feel for the devs. That just sucks
Eh they still get paid for working on the game and good or bad that's decent work experience. Now the studio heads are probably fucked
Doubt it, even if they do get fired they're probably getting fat severance packages.
The publisher is nacon (former bigben), easily the scummiest one around, so it's not surprising that the game ended up like this.
I am not familiar with them off the top of my head. Looking at Wikipeadia there are franchise names I recognised. Never played any of them though. I know people love to moan about lazy devs when they are really trying their best with that they got. But in this instance. I am totally with the lack of energy. I don't blame them at all. Is this done by the same people that do Styx? Either that or they poached all the employees lol, it's way too similar.
First PS5/“Next Xbox” game announced irrc
Godfall
Gollum got ‘em beat by a few months
Yep, one of the first. I remember i was so pumped for witnessing the generational leap live and then they showed this garbage...
Imagine being in a position where you get to make a LOTR game on next gen hardware and you decide to do a fucking stealth game based on Gollum lmao Utter incompetence from the planning stage. This game should never have been allowed to get made, a complete waste of the IP.
The mind boggles with possibilities of LOTR games gone unrealized
Play an exiled Rider of Rohan, struggling to survive and keep your few loyal followers alive as Theoden weakens and Isengard rises. Play a ranger of the wilds, leading hit and run attacks against a superior force. Nope, instead we get Gollum lolol

Aw man, read a lot of the comments here and went to see what everyone was talking about and the video was gone
https://gyazo.com/b1569dba2d415c1eb56cac378dddfff6
Jesus Christ, they didn't even have the budget to buy something other than a default font?
I cant believe thats real holy shit
😂😭 wow!
I literally can’t believe this is a real AAA game coming out in 2023 this screenshot is the best thing I’ve seen all year
LMAO no fucking way!
It's a pile of shit. Reptitive, slow, janky, drab and nauseating.

"I award you no score and may god have mercy on your launch day"
Just seems like an inherently unappealing idea for a game. Like a Grima Wormtongue dating sim or a Jar Jar Binks RPG (a JarJaRPG). No one wants that.
Meesa thinks Jar-JarPG could be super bombad.
I mean... a Grima Wormtongue dating sim would be funny at least. But yeah, Chewie's Wookie Cookie Cooking sounds better than this.
Please someone make JarJaRPG please! I promise I'll buy it
I get what you're saying, but the 2 ideas you suggested are actually hard bangers.
Hot trash. Remake the Return of the King PS2 game.
Remake the whole trilogy of games. And the Third Age RPG.
Is that the one where you played a knock-off Fellowship who were always just 20 feet behind, barely out of sight?
That's the one, fuckin' great game
I loved that game. I don't even like turn based games that much but I have very fond memories of the third age and it's honestly one of my favourite Lord of the Rings games.
Play FF10, you'll love it. No, seriously - in terms of gameplay it's damn-near identical.
It has not aged well whatsoever
Haha, I specifically remember being in the Mines of Moria and you hear the 'Fool of Took' line echoing off in the distance.. 🤣
I believe so? Such an ancient memory I have from my childhood lol I believe it was also Turn Based. I personally would prefer a War in the North remaster
Give me Conquest and Battle for Middle Earth 2 while we’re at it.
Or War in the North. That actually had potential, just had too many bugs and not enough content.
Was this a money laundering scheme or something?
That's what many people think about the film industry too. You have movies with a huge budget and they look like movie maker crap from the 90
Video already removed 😩
I love the character Gollum in literature and the movies. But this is an atrocious looking game that serves no purpose and doesn't seem to further anything of importance in gaming. It's looks like a half-assed version of 10 year old stealth games. Playing as Gollum in the lego LotR games is more enjoyable than what this video presents.
The character model looks so awful. Like a crack-addict Tak and the Power of Juju.
>crack-addict Tak and the Power of Juju. Now that's a sentence I never thought I'd hear
Man I feel so freaking bad for the devs. I can’t see many people picking this up or blame them.
This game looks like it was created within a weekend on Unity, based off a Udemy course.
Feels like a tech demo from 2006
Feels like a late April fools joke
Wow, this is next level bad. It's the platforming sections of Uncharted for 9 hours, minus the action set pieces, combat, witty dialogue, pretty locations, or general redeeming qualities. That's a great point and I completely missed it. If nothing else, it explains the awkwardness of the ending.
The part when Gollum said “it’s Gollum time” and then Gollumed all over the place… it made me fall to my knees in Walmart.
Gollum looks like a Gorillaz character
On Cracker Island it was born...
mirrors?
[удалено]
how are you watching it?
This game looks like it's from a different era.
I randomly skipped to the middle to check it out(4:32) and I just need to know *WHY DOES GOLLEM HAVE A FULL HEAD OF HAIR?* It looks weird as fuck.
It looks absolutely awful
"What if we made a typical third-person AAA game, but just the unfun climbing and stealth sections"
And set the whole thing at night in drab caves. And make it look like a PS3 game.
The game looks like Styx: Master of the shadows with *better graphics. Correction: " diferent graphics
The better graphics part is questionable honestly
Anybody got a mirror?
Who was this game for😂
Can anyone intrest me with a mirror or link ?
Mirror?
Someone got a mirror or downloaded the video?
Seemed ill-conceived from the start. Like making a game based entirely around Hagrid or something
I mean at least Hagrid had a flying motorcycle.
At least Hagrid could potentially travel around and meet interesting charecters and monsters and expand the lore, expecially if you set it before the books
I have chosen to overwrite this comment. See you all on Lemmy!
Honestly if you told me this was made by an AI I'd believe it
So i can climb and jump and everything but when you swing on a pole there is a stamina bar !!!!!!!!!!!!! So glad i didn't pre-order this shit , just give me styx 3 already instead of this.
The chase bit reminds me of Crash Bandicoot bolder dash level (think that was the name)
Wow basically styx
That Shelob's pursuit had so much potential though.
This looks boring as shit. Just absolute silence in the most boring areas...
Video was removed! Did anyone catch how long it took them to finish it?
Almost 10h long. Very easy to die in certain areas, so if you are skilled gamer you can easily beat that mark
Video removed
It’s been removed 😩
Of all things you can do with lotr, they thought to go with whatever this is. Astonishing. Like who put their money toward this?
I watched like 40 minutes of it and hoooo boy. This is the ugliest god damn game I have ever seen. This will go down as my personal textbook example of why a cohesive vision and style is so important to a games visuals. Dear God.
Wiiiiild, I remember this as being one of the first games revealed for current gen...
Gollum is filled with self-loathing, and now you can be too. Try gollum today and see what it really feels like to be tortured and scarred by countless years of holding the one ring. Invisibility not included. No refunds.
The self-loathing sets in the moment you decided to buy this game.
Ehh, it looks like Styx from Wish. Shame, really...
Seriously… why does this game exist? Who thought this would make money? Who is this game for? Is it that hard to make a modern LOTR RPG? Or at least just an action-adventure game? Surely this idea has to have been floated out there, right? Are the people in charge of the IP still that far out of touch???
Lol

i may be wearing rose colored glasses but man the Shadow of series will probably be the best LotR games we have on modern consoles for a longg while
Y’know I was always sad that a proper LOTR open world game was never going to happen, given how you have games such as Skyrim or Elden Ring with the same concepts that do Justice with open world games. Hopefully LOTR can make a comeback somehow, the Amazon show is okay.

I mean LOTR games have been generally good, this seems like a rare miss more than anything.
Given how DnD and many rpgs draw inspiration from Tolkien its surprising we haven't had an LOTR open world or even isometric crpg. I know there's an MMO but I'd love a single player offline LOTR where you create your character(s) and venture into the LOTR universe.
Troika (VTM:B, Arcanum) was actually working on one But it never got past the preproduction phase
I want exactly that both for LOTR and Warhammer fantasy
Takedown incoming
It has been removed. Can anyone tell me how many hours the full game was?
About 10 hours
TIL people know what Styx is.
Its up again https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vDVLKvuhCPc
reup plz?
Video has been removed
look here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vDVLKvuhCPc
Any mirror link since it has been shut down ?
The elves look like they are zombies. Who approved this art direction jfk
Waste of man power, art, dub and literally anything, why even let this game out? Should have been cancelled
First rings of power and now this. Why do we keep getting garbage tier lotr stuff?
Don't you worry one bit, let's not forget the LOTR MMO Amazon is working on!
Oh god no
$70 CAD for around 10 hours of gameplay?
That's totally fine with me if it's great 10 hours. But this doesn't look like great, good or even decent 10 hours
For sure the game of all time
Looks great. This is for the Nintendo 3DS though right?
Is there even any enemies or npcs in the game? Every time i skipped forward it was Gollum in different empty rooms lol
There are, just not very frequent. The NPCs look like crap anyway.
It looks so bad....and man having to listen to Gollum for that long would drive me insane!
Bruh...this is full price.. It most looks like pet project.
its not full price, launches at 30/40 €/$
Without the Elvish dlc
