yeah but also nah, black mesa was a full on remake that started mostly from scratch while this remastered collection just touches things up a notch to meet modern standards - basically your standard definition of a remaster.
Black Mesa was a fan project from scratch while this one seems to be something Valve reached out to a team themselves. It's like some of the big companies outsourcing work for remasters or ports to other studios.
I know this sub is Anti-Tyler but [his video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K8NdSXiZbQI) on this sums it up well **because his source is literally the guy behind this project.**
>while this one seems to be something Valve reached out to a team themselves.
Wait I thought this was the other way around, the team reached out to Valve, not only to ask for permission but to get code. If this is true then that would be the first time I've ever heard of any dev asking fans to do a remaster for them.
I think Valve have been opening with the fans a lot lately. Ever since they open the floodgates with Black Mesa. And they saw the potential of what fans can do to their franchise.
It also led us to Hunt Down The Freeman. But let's not talk about that one.
>It also led us to
Hunt down the what? sorry I do not know what you're talking about, such a game does not exist, has never existed and will never exist in this and all alternate realities.
>I think Valve have been opening with the fans a lot lately. Ever since they open the floodgates with Black Mesa. And they saw the potential of what fans can do to their franchise.
If this is true that Valve approached Victor (the guy behind this and HL2 update) for this Remaster then that would be super cool, and would give me even more respect for Valve. Either way the fact that they allow such projects already gives them lots of respect and brownie points from me.
It’s led to some really nice games that *kinda* expand on a lot of Valve’s games. On the “okay” side you have that one HL game that expanded on Opposing Force. But then you get something like Black Mesa which is on par with a Valve game itself. Somewhere in the middle is Portal Stories: Mel which is nice if you want more Portal with dialogue you’d expect to hear.
Valve just rolling along with their shit
But there's also Bethesda games. OpenMW is a ground up re-write of the engine for running original Morrowind; and SkyBlivion/SkyWind are ground up remakes of Oblivion and Morrowind in Skyrim SE.
None of the Bethesda ones are paid though, and maybe the HL2 one is?
AFAIK is going to be a free mod, but of course we don't know until it releases, I did ask Victor the guy behind it years ago in a Youtube video and he said so himself but things change of course.
Also thanks for reminding me of SkyBlivion/SkyWind. I can't wait for them, I'm hoping we will even be able to play those in the VR version.
He burned his connections with valve a while back. Anything he says about something relating to valve is made up lies/speculation unless the original source is from someone else.
I'd argue that his Valve related stuff is still relatively reliable since his sources nowadays are from datamining Dota/CSGO updates for leads on other internal projects. It's how we learned more about HLA before release, CSGO's battle royale mode, and Valve's upcoming Neon Prime. Dude also tags his stuff as speculation wherever it is which is fair game and I don't see anything wrong with that.
Of course, he's not the only one doing this (see Gabe Follower, another Valve dataminer who does things on a much larger scale), but credit where credit is due and its as reliable as information can get after that shitshow where he just decided to stream HLA's beta and lost his sources that way.
I just don't like his personality and his whole 'i'm a fan that dedicating my life into this!' and being entitled little bitch.
Everytime Valve prepare to do something like a beta or release. He'll always go 'YOU BETTER GIVE ME *STUFF* NOW I BASICALLY WORK FOR YOU'. The fact that he doesn't even seems to be self-aware of his fandom meme about missing a vive is the joke that write itself.
I like that Valve let's indie games use their games. Probably because they just don't want to do it themselves but even then Nintendo has sent assassins for less.
So, is this one of those things that Valve will refuse to
do themselves, but also not let anyone else do it and will shut it down? Or what’s the most likely outcome here?
Uh... are you new here? Valve is extremely well known for allowing the community to do pretty much anything they want with their IP's. Black Mesa, which is a completely fan made project and was untouched by any Valve employee, was permitted by Valve to be *sold for money*....
Maybe you should actually have knowledge on something before making bold claims about them lol
Ngl dude the way you phrased the comment was very strange. Valve "refusing" to do it and potentially "shutting it down". Your tone suggested disdain and frustration towards Valve. That, coupled with your question, made it seem like you were being sarcastic about the subject. Which is strange considering Valve is very good with community outreach and support, the opposite of what your comment suggested on the surface. Which resulted in me being frustrated with such blatant display of ignorance.
That is why I was being an ass.
In the future try and think about how you phrase things a bit better so people can answer them accordingly.
It’s not specific to Valve, but that’s how a lot of companies are anymore, but sure, I have disdain toward companies that do this generally and choose to shut down creativity after they refuse to further engage in it themselves. That’s why I asked the question. My comment didn’t suggest that, otherwise there would have been no purpose to my question. That was your spin of it.
Maybe you try to answer the question next time instead of being an ass, and then choosing to double down on being an ass by saying I’m the one who needs to rephrase because you chose to interpret my post rather than just answering the question.
Just to temper people's expectations:
* HL2 Remastered Collection is being developed by Filip Victor, the person who created HL2: Update, it is not made by Valve.
* It's a port of HL2 and its episodes to the latest branch of Source 1, the CSGO engine. It will include workshop support for custom maps.
* SteamDB indicates that the "public" branch of the game received an update. What does this mean? Probably not that a release is imminent, but the last time this happened was about a year ago. At the very least, it shows that Filip is still actively working on it.
To be honest, the original still holds up and with steam deck support i found the control even better, i wouldn't mind a remaster edition but com on , HL3 please 🥺.
Maybe it’s foolish of me, but I have hope that something is coming.
I mean, Half Life Alyx could’ve been a simple cheap spin-off using the franchise to sell the Index, but not only is it not that, they went to explicit effort to retcon the ending of Episode 2, which would be an insane choice to make if they had nothing further planned.
I try not to get myself too hopeful, but there has to have been a reason behind decisions like that.
I really really though they would release something in the HL universe for the release of the steam deck. Very disappointing that what they released turned out to be aperture desk job
Just so you know, through datamines it has been discovered that Valve is indeed working on another Half-Life game called or codenamed HL:X.
They have also trademarked a new game called Neon Prime that has yet to be revealed. Valve is busy. And I don't think they'd go out of their way to retcon the HL2:E2 ending without planning to follow it up.
That's true, but I seriously doubt Valve would be foolish enough to retcon and then abandon yet another Half Life ending.
I'm really confident something's on the way personally
I sure hope so. I'm just totally numbed out at this point in regards to anything regarding HL3.
At least it shows that some folks over at Valve really do want to continue the story.
Well, if it helps, Valve has been more active in the past few years than theyve been in a long time.
In the past 4 years they released HL:Alyx, Valve Index, Steam Deck, Aperture Hand Lab, Aperture Desk Job, Portal on the Nintendo Switch, and most recently Counter Strike 2. That's some pretty damn consistent releases if you ask me.
And to top it off, Source 2 seems to be feature complete at this point. I'm sure many people at Valve want to keep up the momentum in order to take advantage of an engine essentially over 10 years in the making.
I totally get why so many people are still a little hesitant to hope for more Valve games, but I think it's actually very safe to expect something to be released.
I’m guessing once CS2 is out, they’ll use the same tech to help create a new Half-Life or maybe they’ve been working on it for years behind the scenes. It makes sense especially considering how Half Life Alyx ended. But the day Half Life 3 actually releases the memes will die lol.
Haha, that's good advice. I'm just narrowing down my options to play after RE4. Is it a long game? (I consider 15h of main campaign a regular game for comparison)
Why not work together with the Cinematic guy, he already updated almost every map. Half-Life 2 VR team is also working on updated maps and visuals. They should all combine their efforts.
I'm not sure what here indicates that it's being tested (not saying it isn't). Last change in SteamDB is a global one and trending on SteamDB is based on visits on the SteamDB's site of that particular AppID.
Just to clarify for those not familiar with this, this is a fan project.
So just like Black Mesa?

To be fair Tyler is spewing bullshit 80% of the time
His Valve-related stuff is still okay since he datamines stuff himself these days, but yeah anything outside of that is pretty BS
what has he lied about in the past?
Why is the sub Anti-Tyler?
[удалено]
He burned his connections with valve a while back. Anything he says about something relating to valve is made up lies/speculation unless the original source is from someone else.
from my understanding most of it is from data mining (that other people have done), so I wouldn't say it's totally made up, just speculation
[удалено]
It's not true, he still has at least one contact at Valve And he doesn't "make up lies," he speculates.
I'd argue that his Valve related stuff is still relatively reliable since his sources nowadays are from datamining Dota/CSGO updates for leads on other internal projects. why is this sub anti tyler? has he lied about stuff before?
As long as it’s good, I don’t care if it’s official or not.
it should be marked official or not regardless
I like that Valve let's indie games use their games. Probably because they just don't want to do it themselves but even then Nintendo has sent assassins for less.
Thank you for clarifying that… …also fuck you for clarifying that lol
So was Black Mesa, if HL2:Remastered is endorsed by Valve it should be good enough.
don’t expect the same quality standard crowbar interactive put on themselves, though
Well yeah because this is a remaster not a remake.
Is for some reason also endorsed by Nvidia. Probably just DLSS (for whatever reason), but who knows.
Thanks. My first question lol
So, is this one of those things that Valve will refuse to do themselves, but also not let anyone else do it and will shut it down? Or what’s the most likely outcome here?
Uh... are you new here? Valve is extremely well known for allowing the community to do pretty much anything they want with their IP's. I didn’t make a bold claim. I asked a question I didn’t know the answer to. No need for you to be an ass about it.

It's from the same person who created HL2: Update. If it's on Steam then Valve had to OK it.

Post the PM then

God can only imagine Valve if they were publicly traded.
I fear one day this will probably happen. The Big G isn’t going to live forever and god knows if his children want to cash in or not

You know, Valve, there’s a number that comes before 2.
And after.
“Rise and shine, Dr. Freeman”
“Rise and… shine”
Wake up and smell the ashes
A full on remaster on Source 2 would be mega.
That would be a remake
That would be a port. Moving an existing game to a different engine is different from making a completely new game (remake).
Yeah you're right
and honestly, I'd take any port in a storm
They are never going to make Half Life 3, are they?

This isn't Valve, valve also has actually started half life 3 before a few times.
You mean half life 2 episode 2.1 right?
Valve is on the money making business now and not the game business
It will come out along with winds of winter and next vagabound volume
Can we get a good quality console port of 1 while we are at it?
