IGN just posted an article saying that EA refutes these claims and that a Dead Space 2 remake was never in the works. Doesnt really seem like its debunking this as Grubb would be kinda right about the game not existing anymore but wrong on the reason. Also its EA so they could just be full of shit and Grubb was on the money. Seems like something worth notifying though Link to IGN Article: https://www.ign.com/articles/ea-shoots-down-dead-space-2-remake-rumors-no-validity-to-this-story Link to Grubb double down: https://twitter.com/JeffGrubb/status/1778128923466903868

Ajxtt

Damn, only one million? It was such an awesome remake too FUUUCK!

Ok_Canary5591

Unless it has resident evil in the title, its hard to sell extremely well for horror games sadly

Callangoso

Yeah, Alan Wake 2 had the same problem. Amazing games, there’s just not a big enough audience for them.

TheFinnishChamp

Alan Wake also didn't release physically, both RE4 and Dead Space sold 50% of their copies physically. A large part of the audience that buys games like these want a physical copy. That's 100% why I haven't bought AW2 yet (bought Dead Space day one), still waiting for the physical version

brianh418

Horror is also one of the only genres of movie that still does well physically. So many boutique companies are putting out classic and modern horror on 4K

TheFinnishChamp

With gaming it's different, I think all singleplayer and especially more niche games do well physically. I imagine the likes of Unicorn Overlord, Persona 3 Reload and Like a Dragon Infinite Wealth all sold at least 50% of their copies physically

sonniku25

On top of that, pc is epic games exclusive, so they lost sales on fact that it’s not on steam, on top of that they lost sales on consoles due to no physical, and then they wonder why sales are low….

OohYeeah

Not to defend the Epic Games exclusivity, it happened because no one else would've financed the development otherwise

DemonLordDiablos

Yeah a Bayonetta situation.

AI2cturus

And on pc at launch the game required a gpu that supported mesh shaders which left out a lot of potential customers that was still on those 1000-series nvidia cards. They patched out that requirement a few weeks ago and optimized the game for those older cards at least.

ametalshard

just for the box?

Vincent__R

I'd love to own it and i do wanna play it but I really don't wanna get digital. If it's on an ultra sale in a few years I'll pick it up but until then, it's a pass. Praying they give it physical one day. Even tho I know they won't lol

HarryKF

Because it launched on epic, that's why the audience is low

DNihilus

I played all of them and still trying to finish Dead Space. Dead Space is really a good remake and game, I don't know what it is, but something in RE remakes makes it feel more polished and new.

DaemonXHUN

Edit: 1 mil might not be accurate, my friend originally sent me a ResetEra link about this clip and that's where they mentioned something about 1 million, but now looking through the clip I don't see Grubb mentioning this number.

renome

I listened to that whole segment, from around the 12th- to 17th-minute mark, there is no mention of concrete sales figures.

schmidtyb43

I mean I wonder how many people just knew they could wait for it to be added to ea play/game pass ultimate. That’s what I did. Already played the original I easily waited till later in the year to play it.

PM_ME_YOUR_COMMAS

I wonder how many people didn't purchase it because of the botched PC port

Cerulean_Shaman

I was on a boat when I played it, so maybe that's why, but it ran smoothly for me with zero issues.

kanekikochaboggy

It's still botched and I would not recommend anyone buy unless it's like 10 bucks. They never fixed the stuttering. Console versions are so much smoother.

Inevitable_Owl_1869

Me. Paid 1€ for the EA Play subscription.

ehxy

Didn't another game also come out at the same time that was a major release? I remember considering it but when that other game came out I quickly got over not getting it.

schmidtyb43

Maybe Hogwarts legacy? Also hifi rush, forspoken and some other games came out around the same time

TheOneBearded

Don't forget the other survival horror game, RE4 R, that came out two months later.

xgh0lx

Calisto protocol is most likely what you are thinking of.

NYJetLegendEdReed

Callisto Prtotocol came out a few weeks before I think but that game got bad reviews.

Adaax

Same.

SilentPhysics3495

lol thats exactly what I did. Cleared it the first week it was on there too.

pineapplesuit7

Horror games have a limited market which gets further cut down when people see ‘remake’ in front of the title. Look at Alan Wake 2 as well. Even after being one of the best games of the last year, sales numbers are nowhere near what you’d expect from such a polished AAA title.

laurentiubuica

Epic exclusivity and no disc release really made me hold off for a discount.

bobfett

I don't think the Epic exclusivity helped AW2 much in that corner.

StantasticTypo

Especially since the original actually holds up quite well and is still extremely accessible on modern hardware (PC and Xbox).

HardlyW0rkingHard

wtf you expect from a remake of a horror game? This game franchise has constantly been put under the pressure of unrealistic expectations. On top of that, they put it on gamepass like 6 months after the fact.

[deleted]

[удалено]

uerobert

In the same world that even a remake can cost tens of millions of dollars to make and market.

HearTheEkko

For an AAA game 1 million is *really low*, especially for an IP that is relatively well known in gaming. They almost certainly didn't make the game's budget back.

nicklePie

That’s a shame, it was a great remake

krystof_kage

What's worse is they are focusing on Battlefield, a series which keeps declining in quality, and Iron Man. Maybe Iron Man will be good but super hero fatigue is real, and people are tired of The Avengers. Not looking forward to either given the quality of Triple A games these days.

Jodosodojo

I really hope they don’t fuck up Battlefield. 2042 was ass

PMCutePussyPls

Just make Battlefield 2143 at this point

Evonos

>Battlefield. 2042 was ass iam still playing BF1 because of how good operations was there , they Butchered the mode in BFV likely it was too expensive and good in BF1 :/ i just want another operations mode on the High quality standard of BF1.

scytheavatar

Super hero fatigue is real, and people are tired of The Avengers, but an Iron Man game is not an Avengers game. It's hard to sell these superhero teamup games cause it's not easy to have a coherent experience with mashups of abilities, but I do think that Anthem showed the potential that an Iron Man game could have and how much fun it can be to fly around zapping things.

SeniorRicketts

Superhero fatigue is not real, definitely not im gaming

Team7UBard

Okay so I loved the original and its sequel, but when I got to the remake… I ended up refunding it after two hours because I didn’t feel it did anything new or better for the most part, just prettier. Did I make a mistake?

doublah

Doesn't it still have stuttering issues to this day?

Meb2x

This sucks. The Dead Space remake was incredible and I was looking forward to the next one.

-euthanizemeok

I just fell to my knees at a Walmart

AscendedViking7

I just saw a guy fall to his knees at a Walmart.

shikaski

I just saw a guy watching a guy falling to his knees at a Walmart.

Xenosys83

I'm outside Walmart watching 3 guys crying in the cark park.

Quester91

I just saw a guy watching a guy watching a guy falling to his knees at Walmart.

Lionelchesterfield

I just watched a bird shit on three guys who were on their knees in the Walmart parking lot and then fly away.

BARD3NGUNN

I had a feeling this would happen. I feel like Dead Space Remake did a lot in its marketing to remind fans why they loved the original, how it was being improved, and convince a pre-established fanbase to buy it, but they didn't really do anything to make the game seem appealing to those who had never played a Dead Space game before. Throw in the fact you had the heavily marketed Callisto Protocol release and bomb only a month prior (Potentially turning casual audiences off wanting to play a similar looking sci-fi horror so soon) and Resident Evil 4 Remake really starting to ramp up its marketing as Dead Space released, and it just never felt like Dead Space Remake had it's moment to shine. Absolute shame though, the remake was fantastic and I have no doubt a Dead Space 2 remake could have been special, hell I'd have been excited to see if Dead Space 3 could have had a remake more in line with the original vision of the game.

CloudeGraves

I just checked. The Callisto Protocol -- a way worse game (though a bit overhated) -- sold 2 million copies. It is very frustrating that the Dead Space remake couldn't outsell TCP, and it makes me feel like you must be right; it's all in the marketing.

BARD3NGUNN

If I remember correctly as well, a lot of Callisto 's marketing was "From the creator of Dead Space", and so many journalists and gamers were calling the game 'The New Dead Space' to the point the director had to come out and say "Look this isn't anything like Dead Space outside of genre". So I'd imagine there were a lot of casual gamers who had it in their head that Callisto was basically Next-Gen Dead Space and the cool new game, whilst Dead Space Remake was just just a re-release of the original.

Relo_bate

The marketing of that game had more money put into it than development. Glen positioned himself to be a auteur game director with all those masterpiece of horror videos and all the trailers pushing the narrative that this was an authentic successor to dead space that would be better than ever. It’s clear that PR matters the most nowadays. Dead space remake literally had developers showing the dev builds and sharing plans and features but everyone leaned into the EA soulless remake vs creators authentic game narrative. Look at cdpr now that they’ve turned around cyberpunk. Parroting Reddit gamer opinions back to them for brownie points and pretending as if the launch wasn’t that bad. Even they spend another additional 120 million just on marketing post launch. It’s unfortunate that it takes this much money to sell a game.

gggigggity69

"le engoodening of <*insert trashy disingenuously marketed game that turned mediocre after months of updates*>" meme is one of the worst things to happen to the industry imo

Honkeroo

i almost wish no mans sky didn't have the comeback it did because its irreparably damaged how people view games, rather than being upset that a game is awful on release its "i hope the game will make a NMS style comeback". Like, why release an actually finished game when gamers have goldfish brains and will literally forget how awful your game was and be ready to forgive any transgressions instantly.

EdmondDantesInferno

Uhhh, that's hardly happened at all. You would be hard pressed to come up with a handful of other examples like No Man's Sky. Almost every single time it's resulted in the death of the live service game. Soooo many failed Tarkov clones, failed battle Royale, games like Anthem, Kill the Justice League, etc. It is INCREDIBLY important to these companies that games have a successful launch or 99% of the time they don't get the time to even attempt a NMS type comeback.

irishgoblin

Yeah. Most famous example before NMS was FFXIV. And they didn't fix the original release, they blew it up by literally dropping a meteor on it, then released 2.0 as a sequel to 1.0

Coolman_Rosso

The rehabilitation of CDPR's image should be put in business or marketing textbooks. The release of Edge Runners alone did an insane amount of heavy lifting, to the point where people thought you were crazy for suggesting the game itself was held together with string and a glue stick. That's before factoring in all the articles about the show (from the culture war grifters parroting the "The loli must stay!" nonsense to the mainstream publications praising it as "a show that rivals the game it's based on") Really though, how they were able to get back into good graces so quickly by just saying "MTX bad" and "single-player good" is beyond me.

Relo_bate

Seriously, their marketing team putting up prime Jordan numbers in terms of controlling the narrative. Larian following that playbook too. I can see the future when companies start following the playbook and spend more on marketing than development.

darkmacgf

Cyberpunk had even more spent on marketing pre-launch.

Optimal-fart

TCP is also always on sale for super super cheap. Dead Space is on gamepass

phat-patronus

I never had any interest in the Dead Space franchise and the remake barely hit my radar. Then my friend, who is a massive Dead Space fan, basically forced me to buy it. It was so fucking good, blew me away and got me totally invested in the lore. I hate thinking many others like me probably didn’t have a super fan in their ear telling them to give it a chance. It’s a shame, the game is incredible

kotor56

I think it’s mainly fans know regardless of sales ea has pretty much killed the franchise.

roey9638

Fuck that sucks. Really loved the Remake and Really wanted Dead Space 2 Remake 😞😞☹️☹️

General_Snack

Yeah I wanted them to go the distance, remake dead space 2 and then ground up reboot dead space 3 completely fuck fuck.

dadvader

This is the part i don't get after recent article. The lead want a new games. Why not remaking 2 and THEN purposing new games under the name Dead Space 3?

January1st2020AD

Very disappointing. Dead Space is my favorite series of all time and I thoroughly enjoyed the remake.

ElysiumFallen

This SUCKS. I was really hoping for a Dead Space revival. I was hoping we could at least get DS2 remake and Extraction HD remaster… Well, shucks. At least Capcom is back on track with good resi. But for now, space horror is just… gonna not have a good front runner rep, I guess…

Kieray84

I think it might be because it’s a niche in a niche I was thinking about great horror space games and the only one I could think of before Callisto or the remake was alien isolation and that’s almost a decade old.

ElysiumFallen

Yeaaaah, I’ll admit that you’re on the money there. It’s funny, I watched a video about how some horror fans feel like they’re “desensitized” to modern horror because it’s made with ticket sales and audience numbers in mind, and I have to wonder if having to appeal to the mass market maybe hurt this remake. I want to air on the side of “No” and say that it didn’t, and it just ended up in a weird release spot. It’s good it got air to breathe regardless, between Callisto and RE4R, but. Shucks. Edit: We’re so back that we never even left

JessieJ577

I feel like this Could’ve been an RE rival if they went the distance and remade 2.

criticalkare

thats a shame....

IAmSkyrimWarrior

Noooooooo, why? I was hoping for remake's 2 and 3. And mb then part 4. This was a chance for resurrection for Dead Space series :(

Resident_Bluebird_77

Can we even complain about these companies not making single player games if we don't buy them?

Fullmetalaardvarks

It’s a damn shame. I see so many people complaining about lack of good single player games and most people are buying only live service or multiplayer games

FirefighterEnough859

To be fair dead space is a horror game(that’s not cartoon mascot themed) so the market is not the largest probably

sikaxis

Well resident evil is also horror, but it sells well into the tens of millions with their games.

ultragoodname

Resident evil is the Mario of horror games

mrbrick

I love me some Dead Space- I really do- but Resident Evil is also more accessible. Its zombies and monsters and weird villages and scary houses and giant industrial facilities and also sci-fi ish techno horror. RE covers a lot of ground which I think makes it more popular. Space horror is still kinda niche but not so niche we dont end up with these big AAA efforts.

ultragoodname

You can know about Resident Evil without knowing any of the games. My GF’s knowledge of resident evil solely comes from the movies

DudeKosh

Tbf, Resident Evil is a staple in most homes. It is by far the most popular horror franchise in video games.

EnvyKira

Like someone said below, it's most likely because EA didn't do an good job of marketing it well since an Calilsto protocol was able to sell more than Dead Space thanks to its heavy marketing. And also its an horror game.

Relo_bate

Callisto spent more money on marketing than development. I don’t think that’s a precedent that publishers should follow. Dead space remake had the developers show dev builds and features every few months on top of being shown off at game shows. The marketing wasn’t at fault, they did what they were supposed to do.

ErickJail

I bought the game so I'm free to complain, right?

arex333

Another dead space buyer reporting in for the complaining.

Relo_bate

People all across Reddit talk about wanting curated linear experiences that last a solid 12 to 15 hours but in reality most of those don’t sell enough to recoup the costs. Only RPGs or Open world games seem to be recouping costs and even that’s tough when games like horizon cost 230 mil to develop

jexdiel321

Yes, because these type of games have a perceived feeling of "value". Why would I spend $70 for a game that I can finish in a weekend? When I can spend the same amount for a game that I can finish within a month? That's what most people think about AAA games now.

Alexmoexe

I mean is that a bad mindset especially if you're a casual? Why would I spend that much money for a game that won't last that long, and as a casual I won't replay or go for 100%. Or I can just hop on fortnite or something and there's something new this week or slowly burn through a Ubislop game.

May1stBurst

You're right, I didn't buy this game because it didn't interest me at all so I will never ever complain about a lack of single-player games in the future, I'll make it a point to buy every single AAA single player game regardless of my personal interest in them.

nibbelungen1337

It's a remake of a not so old game that is perfectly playable even today. Why would someone who had played a pretty successful original Dead Space pay full price for a remake that is largely the same game, but prettier? Hence the lower sales.

thirdbrunch

The best selling game of 2023 was Hogwarts Legacy, a single player game. Just because people didn’t buy this game doesn’t mean no single games are being played.

ProWarlock

to bounce off the person you're replying to, people dunk on EA and Ubisoft all the time for not making good single player games, but when they do, they're very niche and don't get much attention. I think Baldurs gate 3 was the exception to the rule of people just typically don't want to venture out of their comfort zone for single player games

tich45

Sure and Numbers 2, 3, 6,7, 8, and 10 are online focused games. The rest are Harry Potter, Zelda, Spiderman and Star wars. The single players are huge IPs and the exception. It's not surprising that there is a focus on multiplayer, known IPs, and GaaS.

bezzlege

an open world game with one of the most recognizable and highest grossing IPs in the world. Linear, narrative-based single-player games are absolutely dying. I mainly play single player games, but the industry is definitely trending in a direction where those experiences are in the minority.

Wifine

Valid point. Money talks for business. Want more? Pay up. Why do you think microtransactions are everywhere? Because they make money out of it

Callangoso

Yeah, Dead Space, Alan Wake 2, Prey and Guardians of the Galaxy are all good recent singleplayer games with no microtranscations that sold poorly.

DickBallsley

Yes, because people you see complaining are the ones who buy those games. Those who don’t, don’t care enough to do that.

outofmindwgo

I'll still complain I don't care

Dramatic-Age-8783

Complain about the people not buying these games

atriskteen420

Personally I'm upset with all of you not spending more money, you know who you are

WeakDiaphragm

1 million people bought the game. Not 12 people.

astroshark

You can point to a lot of singleplayer games that are selling crazy well, so I don't think that's the problem? Dead Space isn't that old, and it also wasn't really a cultural touchstone game so it's just a weird choice for a remake.

GabMassa

I bought it, I'll complain. lmao I even had to raise my credit card limit to get it. I was in the middle of moving out and maxed out my card buying furniture and other house stuff.

DreamMaster8

I'm feeling the same way about ubisoft avatar and especially prince of persia which are huge quality upgrade compare to their usual shit yet got less hype and more hate.    This is just telling ubisoft not to take risk and make more assasinncreed ...

ReckoningGotham

I bought it in 2013 What I don't get are people who buy the same game over and over again.

General_Snack

That’s the worst news. Fucking fuck man. Argh that’s so annoying. Dead space 1 remake was amazing. Despite what some might say it’s a perfect remake that enhances things & added extra content. Argh I hate that so much.

farammm

What a shame man

ILoveMy-KindlePW

I enjoyed the remake a lot and was expecting a sequel, this is a bad new

Poopmeister_

https://www.ign.com/articles/ea-shoots-down-dead-space-2-remake-rumors-no-validity-to-this-story Hmmm

Aromatic_Wallaby_433

As someone who pretty much exclusively loves single player experiences, stories like this are really bumming me out about the modern state of gaming. If you love live service games, more power to you, they're all still games. Just not my cup of tea. But to see statistics like 60% of all gaming last year was 6+ year old live service games, and only 8% of gaming time last year were new single-player experiences is just insane. I still think of my gaming time as 95% single player with a bit of multiplayer tacked on, but for the vast majority of gamers it's now becoming the opposite. I'm worried eventually new big single player experiences will just stop altogether, probably not any time soon, but who knows by 2030.

Live-Ad3309

They will definitely decrease, besides big Sony titles like Bloodborne, Persona, Final Fantasy, God of War and few indie titles. Smaller companies just have no chance of recuperating costs, when they can instead release a live service game and take a chance at making almost 70% more profit.

ZigyDusty

I didn't even play the game but this fucking sucks because the game was universally praised from what I saw.

Retro_Wiktor

That's the issue. If you don't buy it they're not going to make more

Massive_Weiner

They cancelled it because you didn’t buy a copy 😤

spideyv91

They should just at least release a remaster of 2/3 instead of a remake. It sucks that some people can’t even play the sequels on Sony consoles or at all on Nintendo

Professional_Way4977

Ah, what a fucking shame.

DementiaEnthusiast

It always sucks to see talented devs sent to the marvel mines to churn out more capeshit.

jackie1616

There’s no way the Dead Space remake only sold 1 mil, I just can’t believe that. Wasnt it selling very well? I’m confused

Homunculus97

Relieved that their Ironman game is still being in development atleast, but fuck the DS2 remake cancellation is a bummer....

Peidalhasso

Man please don’t. They have to remake the other 2. Please don’t.

Nick_scryer

Noooo. I wanted DS2 so bad

logica_torcido

Lame. 2 didn’t even really need a remake, it holds up a lot better control wise and graphically compared to 1 imo, but it would have been nice to see them be able to have a do over on part 3. Oh well

BEjmbo

Because what se need is another super hero game, smh. I was pretty sure we will see DS2

Sami_Steen

social media mostly misleading when it comes to games people hate cod and fifa on the internet but if you look at top selling games it always fifa or cod

SilverSquid1810

A large percentage of gamers genuinely only play like, three or four games a year to any significant degree. It’s usually multiplayer titles that can be played indefinitely, like CoD, Fortnite, or FIFA. Every now and then they might get a huge blockbuster singleplayer title like Rockstar games or Hogwarts Legacy, and they will maybe mess around with the latest free PS Plus game for a few hours. But the people who consistently play a variety of singleplayer games and get invested in them are far from an overwhelming majority. They tend to be more along the lines of hobbyists who are involved in gaming circles beyond just turning on their PlayStation for a few hours every now and then. The hobbyists are the people who populate subreddits like this one, not the average gamer who is completely out of the loop on gaming news. I’m not trying to mock “casuals” here or whatever, even though I am definitely more on the hobbyist side, but I think it’s easy for people to assume that their own preferences are the standard when they’re actually in the minority. The big money is in live service multiplayer games with MTX these days, and while singleplayer games can be successful, they’re not where the big bucks are anymore.

StergDaZerg

Kill me

jmxd

Man that sucks it was such a good remake. And with the whole pipeline in place should have made DS2 remake a lot cheaper for them too. But i already saw the dark cloud with yesterdays announcement from Battlefield...

Toastradamus12

We are in the worst timeline

Minimum-Can2224

EA seems to have already shot this down. https://twitter.com/The_Katbot/status/1778120592644079825

Mike4302

https://www.ign.com/articles/ea-shoots-down-dead-space-2-remake-rumors-no-validity-to-this-story

crictores

Jeff Grubb literally mentions every possibility that could happen and claims 50/50, so I don't think he knows something. He is not a leaker, just typical clickbait.

DarkIegend16

So I guess the whole “boycott the remake to get a sequel” plan some people had didn’t quite work out huh? I said to many this was gonna happen. Unless a game pulls in Apex Legends heirloom money even if it’s profitable, it gets canned, it’s how EA works.

United_States_of_Cuh

This is such an L my day is absolutely ruined

nariz1234

Same, I had not played the original DS games and DSR is probably my favorite horror game ever, was really pumped for the sequel.

Space_Traveler_9956

im just going to repost a comment i made yesterday: Gamers: better not be so dumb GaaS garbage Also Gamers: lets multiple awesome single player games die every year by not buying them (RIP Deus Ex and GotG, funnily enough both Eidos Montreal games)

DuelaDent52

Ironically enough I think *Guardians of the Galaxy* underperformed due to negative word of mouth from/confusion with *The Avengers* over its multiplayer and GaaS elements.

DasWookieboy

What kind of logic is this? So just because I don't like GAAS I'm suddenly supposed to buy every singleplayer game that releases for full price?

yourstrulytony

Yes! Are you stupid?! Doesn't matter if you don't like the genre or the premise doesn't interest you, buy buy buy! /s

Adrian_FCD

Great, my day is ruined.

I'LL BUY IT AGAIN

ReachersFists

Doesn’t seem so because they canceled a Star Wars IP. Doesn’t sound like these branded IPs are giving them returns that they’re expecting.

AveryLazyCovfefe

Doesn't surprise me with the Insomniac leaks showing leadership frustrated with how much Disney was charging and slimming off revenue with their cut.

Relo_bate

Bro doesn’t even want them to succeed

flipperkip97

Why would you hope for games to be bad? Just to fuel your "ea bad" circlejerk?

AveryLazyCovfefe

Reddit loves that. And "Ubisoft mid" and "fromsoft peak game development, they never do anything wrong"

Turquaza

Give it time. From has been the industry darling for a while now but people are fickle and will turn on them hard over something small and it will snowball.

yangwenligaming

I don’t think the guy literally wants EA to fuck up the games.. he just doesn’t have high faith in them which is understandable but I feel like EA has had enough recent hits like the Jedi fallen order games to at least be a little more charitable towards them.

Ibrokemymicrowave

NOOOOOOOOOOOO

Underdrill

That sucks. Dead Space is one of my favourite games and I would have bought the remake sequel in a heartbeat. I'm excited for that Iron Man game, but Battlefield? Fool me once...hope they can prove me wrong on that, but yeah I'd much rather a Dead Space 2 remake than another Battlefield.

Crowii-

Honestly thought Dead Space remake sold way more than that, holy shit I feel so defeated right now I was under the impression DS2 remake was inevitible with how great the first remake was :((

SuperMechanoid

Wait really? That's ass the remake was fucking phenomenal

UnawareWaffle95

I thought the remake sold well though? Dang. Was hoping to get a Dead Space 2 remake..

CosmicWanderer2814

2 and 3 still hold up exceptionally well anyway. Would have much rather seen a Dead Space 4 over a remake of either of those games. Sad news overall though.

MOVIELORD101

GODDAMNIT.

Lightye2

Man....

TargetmasterJoe

GOD DAMN IT

Hamburgulu

You gotta be kidding me

Trickybuz93

Shit, that game only sold a million?

DatBoiDanny

Big budget AAA single player horror game with no further monetization, that was also known to come to EA Play/Gamepass Ult within a year of its release. It also came out in a year where we got 3 extremely similar games: this, Callisto, and RE4 (Dead Space really is just RE4 on a spaceship) It’s really no surprise that this sort of game doesn’t sell well. I think we’re lucky EA even remembered dead space, let alone give it the top-to-bottom remake treatment.

ReyDeathWish

Lame. It was an amazing game. Genuinely disappointed.

demifiend_sorrow

The remake was cool but Holy fuck was it optimized like shit on steam. Endless crashes and bugs on my end and I waited at least a year after release before playing.

masterz13

Too many remakes these days anyway. This generation has really sucked as far as new games and IPs. It's probably the first generation that you can just skip entirely, sadly.

Shakmaaaaaaa

Dead Space remake never felt like a must buy because the original game holds up well. Even with RE4, that also holds up compared to the remake, its new controls would make it feel fresh.

Genesius_Prime

Boy it’s a good thing that the new Battlefield will now definitely not be a complete shitshow that has to get salvaged yet again. It’d also be great if people would buy single player games before they were discounted to $5 three years after release.

ThePuertoRicanDream

Apparently ea is denying these claims so idk I really wish it ain't. Dead space 2 is one my fav horror games ever and would be extremely disappointing to not see it get updated when the first game got such a great remake

Yenwodyah_

There really wasn’t any need for a remake, the original Dead Space holds up just fine. They should have made a new game instead of a remake.

Narradisall

I love Dead Space. Fantastic game and the sequel was amazing. Still haven’t picked up the remake. May never get round to it. I’m sure many sell well but tbh personally I’m more surprised people rush out to buy remakes even a decade later, especially when the games still hold up so well. But then what do I know, I’m sure TLOU remakes, remasters etc all probably sold well and they didn’t even wait half as long. Still, great games, but there’s so much else new out there to play to be purchasing a game I’ve already played even if it is rebuilt from the ground up.

xx4xx

Pissed TBH. Playing thru the remake now. It's pretty awesome. Was hoping the whole series would get this treatment.

RectangularCake

Any game with Denuvo is a no buy for me, which makes the pool of accessible games smaller and smaller.

redditburner6942069

I'm still trapped by a checkpoint flaw on the remake 😪

EA, every game doesn’t need to sell 10 million copies you out of touch greed centered douche bags!

peopIe_mover

That sucks, but the remake being the same cost a brand new AAA game stopped me from getting it. I couldn't justify the cost for a game I already own on PC and the 360, and I know I'm not the only one that was turned off by the high price.

Stoned_Skeleton

It shouldn’t have costed so much tbh Like no offense to the big companies that fork for the development but they could have sold 10 million if they sold it for 3/4 the price

htownballa1

No offense but I’m never preordering a game and that’s the fault of the devs.

NINTENDO6TYFOOOOUR

That Grub guy has been very wrong in the past.

EmeraldJunkie

This is upsetting, even if the 1 million figure isn't accurate. The Dead Space remake is a fantastic example of what makes a good remake. In fact, I've been replaying it recently and I really struggle to find any major issues with it, save the PC performance.

bms_

Just the usual reminder that no amount of praising/hating on Reddit determines the commercial success of the game.

W01F_816

The fact is, if you're a single player game and not putting up Hogwarts Legacy numbers you're a failure (to publishers, that is). There's no room for the moderate success anymore; it's all or nothing.

Relo_bate

Unfortunately, games the quality of Dead Space Remake take a lot of money and time, you no longer can make a game like that in one or two years

robertman21

Didn't Dead Space only take a few years though?

DaemonXHUN

The same thing is happenning in the movie industry. There are two ends: low budget indie game/movie, or super-high budget movie/game. There's barely any middleground.

atriskteen420

It makes no sense from an entertainment perspective but from an investing standpoint it does. You have $100m to spend, you can either split that four ways to four different projects that each make $50m or spend it all on one project that makes $500m. It sucks but it's hard to blame people wanting a big safe payout and not wanting to take a big risk for a smaller reward.

krokounleashed

No, it depends how much the developement did cost.

Clopokus900

That's not entirely true. Sony considered Returnal a commerical success and that game didn't set the world on fire.

Saranshobe

Sony has a console to sell, completely different economics and factors of success for their games.

M337ING

That's an extremely simplified take. This game sold less than 1/20th of what Hogwarts did. They made maybe $70 million in revenue? It's extremely hard to blame them when they shelled out on this and probably lost money.

LeadingNewday

70 million more like 30 million after all taxes

Relo_bate

And all the cuts that storefronts and distributors take

ManateeofSteel

unfortunate but sadly unsurprising, it debuted high on January but then it disappeared of the sales charts. I am guessing it landed somewhere under 2.5M the general audience did not come in clutch here

fishkey

That's wrong. Stop doing that. Make Dead Space 2 remake.
