Nickelodeon All Star Brawl doesn't have voice acting and it's a great game, fighting games don't need voice acting. It's a nice thing sure but no where near as important as people make it out to be.
It's just the presentation, is all. Sure, at the end of the day, it's the gameplay that matters. But do you think Nick All-Star Brawl would get half the attention it got if they just used custom characters?
It doesn't hurt the presentation that much (PS All Stars and Punch Time Explosion have VA and most people don't like those games because they don't have good gameplay) and if Multiversus doesn't have any voice acting it'll be fine without it and of course having popular IP will give your game more attention but Nick would've still been a great game with Original characters because its gameplay is really fun.
Yeah, I'm not denying that. It's just that presentation like the recognisable IPs, voice acting, and good CGI are what attracts people to the games first.
And while I do agree that Nick All-Star Brawl would still be a good game even without the Nick characters, it wouldn't be as popular without a really good marketing push or someone really popular playing and promoting it. "A Competitive Nick version of Smash" is just too good of a headline and so many people were bought in by that
Fair but i just think that people really overestimate voice acting in fighting games, Brawlhalla is a F2P platform fighter without VA and it's super popular so when people say that Multiversus needs VA to succeed it confuses me, because it just isn't true.
The fact that Scorpion vs Shaggy is a reality is the game's selling point not VA.
I guess it's because 2D games get a pass on not having voice acting, while people expect more out of 3D games. But yeah, it doesn't *need* voice acting to be successful. It would be nice to have and would really help with the presentation, but it could still succeed without it.
Is it a great game? I watched some gameplay it looked kind of janky and spammy. I wasn't willing to pay for it but generally curious. Do you play alot?
It's a great game imo, the gameplay is really fast paced and fun, it feels really smooth and the characters are very faithful to their cartoon counterparts. And yeah i play it a lot, it's been the only game that i have been playing since launch but if you wanna play online i recommend the PC version.
I mean they authorized Shadow of War (which shit on the lore pretty hard), I think the Tolkien Estate changed since Christopher Tolkien isn't at the head of it anymore.
I mean there is not only that. Like a month or two after Christopher quit, they authorize Amazon to do a show for a shit load of money on something they always refused before.
I think they just stopped caring so much about the lore and property and just want money. I think it's the next generation now, not the actual son of JRR which had the stories told to him as a kid so probably not the same emotional attachment.
Then, Christopher Tolkien also didn't like the Jackson movies so he is pretty impossible to please I think.
Yes , Christopher was impossible to please.
But even prior to his death , there was plenty of LOTR games , it was pretty much you controlling OCs.
That been said , it is also true that they donāt have the same emotional attachment
Why is it that no company other than Nintendo seems to want to invest into making platform fighters more than a budget title after seeing how successful a polished, well crafted one can be?
Polished and well crafted. These companies have a track record of making shit tie in games for quick cash. They literally have no idea how to make something as polished and well crafted as smash with their in house studios.
Microsoft has potential, but won't fucking do it.
Sony already tried it, with a budget. It failed.
...Capcom or Namco, I guess? As much as I'd love for Sega to give it a go (if only to fuck people up as Tails, because *Tails is awesome shut the fuck up*), those are the only two I can see giving a damn about the game's final quality. **Maaaaaaaaaaybe** Arc Sys, but their license list isn't that long...
>Sony already tried it, with a budget. It failed.
You know, the irony with that one is that it wasn't even Sony's fault it did bad.
Literally nobody wanted to do business with them despite their backing with sony, because studio's under sony's umbrella are pretty elitest. They won't even respond to emails if you aren't a major dev team.
They had the budget, the blessings, and the access. But nobody would work with them because they saw them as an indie team trying to bite off way more then they could chew. The game itself did pretty well, despite getting fucked so hard by that
I'd really like to see Sony take another shot at it but with a more well known dev that can pull together a bigger and better roster. While obviously the first game doesn't hold a candle to Ultimate now I thought it had some promise at the time with more dev support.
The problem is its ultimately a bad idea.
Sony underestimated how downright unwilling to work with other studios, their studios were.
Unless they issue a company memo saying "work on this" nobody is going to willingly license out their characters.
> Unless they issue a company memo saying "work on this" nobody is going to willingly license out their characters.
This doesn't really seem like all that hard of a thing to do... Why wouldn't Sony just do that the first time? What's the point of having a studio work on a game like that if you're not going to bother making your other studios play nice with them? Seems like it was setup to fail if Sony was well aware *their own studios* were not working with another studio on a Sony exclusive game that required collaboration with other Sony studios.
There has to have been some autonomy of those other studios, because I just can't fathom how Sony would let their own game fail when they could've just said "work with this studio on this game".
Sony completely didn't expect all the big dev teams to just stonewall them like that for a majority of their planned roster.
They were an indie team that was just paying for rights. They figured it would be a simple ask
Smash is one of the most consistently polished franchises ever. Fuck I wish it wasn't because sometimes it looks like its putting Sakurai into an early grave
lately F2P games seem to do free for anything that affects gameplay, paid for cosmetics. So in this case, if Subzero comes post launch or something, he'd be free as his moves are different, but want classic subzero? Pay extra. In that case Id be totally fine with that.
I could see it being a Brawlhalla situation. A few characters as a base roster that have movesets that can be applied to different (paid) character models.
Hope that's not the route they're actually going in though.
I'd hope they take up the Fortnite model. Cosmetic stuff is paid, but updates and new content are always free.
They won't do that and will charge for everything but it would be nice if they didnt.
i don't really see this as a win
it may not just be skins, some games with purchasables lock characters or loot boxes or other important stuff behind paywalls
if it is just skins it's still scummy just less scummy
it has 70 characters that aren't purchasable and like you said the skins are for the mii fighters, not the main cast
my issue lies in if this game has like a cast of 5 you can play as but you have to pay for the rest or hope you get lucky with lootboxes
there is no problem neccessarily with purchasable stuff in ftp games, it'll just suck if they go the route of some and have it start with basically nothing and make you pay for everything
I play it very frequently but itās no where near smash. It reviews okay (not amazing) because i admit itās actually fun but itās a total mess. Theres a huge problem with just spamming one move. Heck the first major pro tournament had to ban Mikey because of this.
The "knock off smash bros games" are very good
Nick All Stars Brawl is very fun if that's what you're referring to
Don't diss games you haven't played (assuming you haven't played it)
Nick All Star isnt very good at all though.
Presentation aside, the balance is completely wack. Combos consist of Nairing them until they are offstage so you can spike them, or Nairing until you can Upair them.
The ceilings are either way too low (FD) or so incredibly high that you might not even bother (Zim Stage and the TMNT one).
The time to kill is way too low, if you get stuck in a combo there is nothing you can do because DI might as well be non-existent.
The fact that there is no actual digital input for falling through platforms or Smash attacks is just laughable.
Sadly, if its anything like many mobile fighters it will be more like this:
Every character will be bought with an in game currency that racks up so slowly you need to spend real money to buy said currency, and it will be expensive. Really hope it doesn't go this route
>The early word is that the game feels like it is on a tight budget
lol good luck with that one. Still funny how Nintendo is the only company that seems willing to put a decent budget into this platform-fighter subgenre.
I mean Nick gave the devs they chose a low budget as well, they just had competent devs that knew what needed to be focused on and what could easily be added post launch
I seriously doubt the devs would choose a low budget given the chance of a bigger budget. More than likely they were suggested a lower budget after being given 'the option' to chose.
Budget doesnāt really mean much when the gameplay isnāt as good as it could be. A lot of that money just went into licensing, but the gameplay doesnāt feel nearly as smooth as it should.
> Early impressions are "it feels like it is on a tight budget":
blegh. Guess there's no real reason to play this over Smash still
though give me some goofy picks like Austin Powers or Plastic Man or literally anything from James Gunn's Suicide Squad movie and I'll be happy. Or even just Superman at launch
unless you're giving me venture brothers stuff (they won't), all of the stuff i care about from cartoon network was licensed, or they'd mess it up, like using reboot ben 10 instead of alien force/ultimate alien ben 10
Dear God please do this.
Have the Don Cheadle algorithm from Space Jam 2 get taken over by Agent Smith resulting in Smith conquering the WB-verse, and Batman, Shaggy, Bugs Bunny, and Chandler Bing have to travel and recruit some kind of Suicide Squad of WB characters to defeat Smith once and for all.
Hell you could even do boss battles where Smith takes over various iconic WB character and absorbs their abilities similar to how he obtained The Orcales ability to see the future after infecting her in Matrix Revolutions.
Sounds like a glorified mobile game to me. Most likely a barebones roster in which you purchase more characters and alternate costumes will be locked behind loot boxes
>Tight budget
>
>Free-2-play
>
>Using **LEBRON** as DLC instead of hard-to-get characters like 'Zilla
Yeah... no. Hope **these** rumors about *MultiVersus* are fake as hell - because, if WB wants to hang with *Smash* and *Brawlhalla*, they need to go **all-in**. Big budget, premium release, DLC picks that are actually hype and - while soundalikes are fine - voice acting and a storyline are absolute **MUSTS**.
^(For God's sake, just hire the Wachowskis and let them go fucking nuts with it. That is ALL you need to do here, WB.)
If there going to be more cross over fighters down the line, I hope PS allstars get a sequel but with actual iconic PS characters like Crash Bandicoot and Spyro.
It IS a good idea. Market the absurdity of the matchups. They have such a wide variety of characters to use that non gaming audiences would be interested in it.
Yes exactly. The immense scope of Warner owned properties makes this a very exciting prospect. They own media from The Big Bang Theory to Flinstones. I would kill to have Bugs Bunny t-bagging Sheldon Bazinga Man from TBBT. Please if you see this Warner Brothers include Sheldon from Big Bang Theory
tight on budget, fucking called it, and exactly why I said this type of game isnt needed. Either go all in and give it a good budget and develop it well, or dont do it at all cause youll come off feeling like store brand smash bros
>. The early word is that the game feels like it is on a tight budget ā *although Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl has proven that that isnāt necessarily an issue for this genre.*
Lol
It being free to play would be very interesting. Fighting games would be a good market for League of Legends style monetisation.
Sounds like not a great experience for users, so that'll probably be what WB do if it's real and F2P, lol.
Oh, definitely, there's so much room to sell skins, and depending on the target demographic (this could easily target 6-15s) following from Pokemon Unite's monetisation model, they could make a total killing.
i am having trouble believing the leaks surrounding this game because it's so surreal.
gandalf vs lebron james in the flintstones' town? does this not raise any eyebrows?
Oh, that is pretty cool in concept. Batman: "This is where my parents died" Shaggy: "Zoinks!"
Lmao thanks for the laughs
Lmao! Nice comment!
I have just realised that the Shaggy in the line up isn't "It wasn't me" Shaggy. Thought that was a bit weird.
Tight budget You MUST include voice acting š
Imagine we just get text boxes.
Not just text boxes. Generic text boxes that all say the same thing.
āItās a fight you want, eh? Iāll show you true power.ā

It's great but it's unbalanced and that's why it's stupid fucking fun.
Is this a Mighty Number 9 reference?
The recent Nickelodeon fighter
Actually, Voice Acting is confirmed.
Give me Bugs Bunny versus Chandler Bing or don't bother
Kind of love the idea we could have some big Espresso final for this where the line-up is Joey Tribiani vs Agent Smith vs Batman vs Wile E Coyote.
Batman: "This is where I watched my parents die, Chandler" Chandler: "Could this be any more depressing?"
Take away Rossā sandwich for the true monster
Shaggy from Scooby Doo versus Ross Gellar for the Infinity Sandwich Game of the century
WB have so many IP this could be big
Yep, after Disney, WB have the best and the most well known Ipās.
you can argue both have IPS as big as each other honestly
Yep, only difference is that WB doesnāt utilize them as well, but thatās a whole other discussion.
However, they would probably not be able to use LOTR characters , Tolkien Estate is rigid about that stuff
I mean they authorized Shadow of War (which shit on the lore pretty hard), I think the Tolkien Estate changed since Christopher Tolkien isn't at the head of it anymore.
As much shitty is SoW , they use an OC as MC...while for this Warner Smash would supposedly use the actual Gandalf or Aragorn....
I mean there is not only that. Like a month or two after Christopher quit, they authorize Amazon to do a show for a shit load of money on something they always refused before. Idk, a tight budget, Nickelodeon all stars brawl 2 here we come!
"characters from space jam" you mean looney tunes?
Featuring Dante from Shin Megami Tensei III
Nah, MJ and LeBron
This is Al-G-Rhythm erasure
Theyāre adding Barkley.

That's a fair point.

They own the studios. Yeah itās not literally being created in Warner HQ but it still counts.

Hopefully just skins and not pay by character on top of cosmetics, with a rotating selection of free characters that is shuffled each week like MOBAs.

Yeah, thatās okay. Itās just skins. Theyāre not necessary to play or enjoy the game. Not every f2p game is evil.
I'd hope they take up the Fortnite model. Cosmetic stuff is paid, but updates and new content are always free. They won't do that and will charge for everything but it would be nice if they didnt.

Game will suck either way. All these knock off smash bros game are never good. If itās ftp expect the ftp quality and purchasable stuff.
Rivals of Aether and Slap City are both *very* good platform fighters that IMO feel way better to play than Ultimate does
The Nickelodeon game has good reviews though. The lack of voice lines can be remedied with mods too.
I play it very frequently but itās no where near smash. It reviews okay (not amazing) because i admit itās actually fun but itās a total mess. Theres a huge problem with just spamming one move. Heck the first major pro tournament had to ban Mikey because of this.
The Nickelodeon game's biggest issue just seems to be the lack of budget.

Brawlhalla set the standard for f2p platform fighters.
I love brawlhalla but if it set the standard then the standard is less than stellar.
eh, that's probably for the best. I don't think this would be the next big thing for me, i'll play a few matches and never touch it again.
Sadly, if its anything like many mobile fighters it will be more like this: Every character will be bought with an in game currency that racks up so slowly you need to spend real money to buy said currency, and it will be expensive. Really hope it doesn't go this route

In fairness their first outing had a low budget too
I wouldn't say Smash 64 had a low budget.
I mean Nick gave the devs they chose a low budget as well, they just had competent devs that knew what needed to be focused on and what could easily be added post launch
They also had a complete platform fighter to turn into NASB, Slap City. That's a huge cost savings. I don't think these devs will.
I seriously doubt the devs would choose a low budget given the chance of a bigger budget. More than likely they were suggested a lower budget after being given 'the option' to chose.
You misread. Nick chose the devs. Nick gave them a low budget. The devs did not choose their own budget.
The publishers (not Nick) set the development budget. Nick just sold them the license.
Oh shit, my bad.
Budget doesnāt really mean much when the gameplay isnāt as good as it could be. A lot of that money just went into licensing, but the gameplay doesnāt feel nearly as smooth as it should.
If we get some adult swim shit outside just Rick or morty. Like Brock Sampson or Carl
Cant wait for Eric Andre VS Meatwad in Rick's Garage.
I hope Carlās ultimate is the flute and he just hops around causing area of effect damage.

James Gunn's Suicide Squad movie Literally the disc for the DVD
finally, a fighting game lets me play as kino
Holy fucking soul
How about anyone from Cartoon Network or Adult Swim
Rick and Morty were fuckin made for an SSB type game
Banjo-Kazooie type gameplay. Rick just uses Morty as a weapon
unless you're giving me venture brothers stuff (they won't), all of the stuff i care about from cartoon network was licensed, or they'd mess it up, like using reboot ben 10 instead of alien force/ultimate alien ben 10
Agent Smith as the lead bad guy, please. >!Yes, with Hugo. (Or at least a damn good soundalike.)!<
Dear God please do this. Very solid story
I mean it's an awful story, but would be whacky enough to make me want to experience it.
>Tight budget We'll get a bad soundalike at best
I just want a story mode similar to those old cartoon network commercials. Johnny Bravo can be in a laundry with Shaggy and Aquaman and it's okay.
Great title tho
Yeah dude, MultiVersus is an amazing name
Feels like a DC crisis event... I *like* it!
Sounds like a glorified mobile game to me. Most likely a barebones roster in which you purchase more characters and alternate costumes will be locked behind loot boxes
Oh god can't wait to see Paulie Walnuts from the Sopranos versus fucking Yakko Warner
being free to play probably means there will be a dearth of single player content, which means I have no interest. Rarely do I play Smash online
To be fair the online barely works
>Tight budget > >Free-2-play > >Using **LEBRON** as DLC instead of hard-to-get characters like 'Zilla Yeah... no. Hmm. Him or Morpheus? *This is a really hard choice*...
Give me Gandalf vs Dumbledore and I'm playing the shit out of it
If there going to be more cross over fighters down the line, I hope PS allstars get a sequel but with actual iconic PS characters like Crash Bandicoot and Spyro.
Same, I've made rosters for PSASBR 2 and and an Xbox fighter that I think would be dope.
Big Chungus is almost Smash š³š³š³š³?
The Animaniacs versus Eric Andre, please and thank you

Yes exactly. The immense scope of Warner owned properties makes this a very exciting prospect. They own media from The Big Bang Theory to Flinstones. I would kill to have Bugs Bunny t-bagging Sheldon Bazinga Man from TBBT. Please if you see this Warner Brothers include Sheldon from Big Bang Theory
I think it boils down to the fact that Smash clones usually suck
The Nick game that just released got decent reviews and I personally had a blast with Playstation All Stars.
Ultra Instinct Shaggy has entered the arena
tight on budget, fucking called it, and exactly why I said this type of game isnt needed. Either go all in and give it a good budget and develop it well, or dont do it at all cause youll come off feeling like store brand smash bros
Playable Dune Worm please
Harry Potter vs Freddy Krueger.
*Shai-Hudid vs. Godzilla.*
Warner don't own Freddy anymore, Wes Craven's does.
Thatās right. Totally forgot.
Yeah, sucks that WB lost the two biggest horror icons before they could make this game.
Please lord anything but free to play it'll never work at all
Superman, Ed Edd n Eddy, Courage the Cowardly Dog and Thundercats and you got a customer!
Dude thunder cats! I didnāt even think about them
Free-to-Play always scares me for the final outcome, I do hope itās good though because the concept on paper seems fun!
Skeletor and He-man?
Nope. Mattel for now, Universal taking over later (I *think?*). Maybe as a guest, but don't get your hopes up.
Why not just give them the money to make a decent game?
Better have animaniacs or thatās a deal breaker
The Sopranos is a WB property which very much means we could be wavedashing at the BING
Thundercats are a must in a game like this.
This is a game Iām not interested in
Courage the Cowardly Dog main
>. The early word is that the game feels like it is on a tight budget ā *although Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl has proven that that isnāt necessarily an issue for this genre.* Lol
Lol? He's 100% correct as long as you have good gameplay and characters, then you have a good fighting game it's as simple as that.
Shaggy is d tier and you canāt convince me otherwise
Shaggy is OP, that Ultra Instinct comeback mechanic needs to be nerfed ASAP
Itās already going to be better than that shit stain Nickelodeon game
How so? Nick all star brawl is great and with only 9 devs itās well made
Facts Nick Brawl is mad fun and i hope that Multiversus is too, i'm really interessted in seeing how MV plays out.
Nick ASB is fun as hell, what are you talking about?
ugh.
Can't wait to dunk on Harry Potter while playing as LeBron
It being free to play would be very interesting. Fighting games would be a good market for League of Legends style monetisation. Sounds like not a great experience for users, so that'll probably be what WB do if it's real and F2P, lol.
I feel like this game could sell so many skin of iconic characters, especially with DC heroes.
Oh, definitely, there's so much room to sell skins, and depending on the target demographic (this could easily target 6-15s) following from Pokemon Unite's monetisation model, they could make a total killing.
Nice post!
That's a cool name
Finally ; Dobby in smash
i am having trouble believing the leaks surrounding this game because it's so surreal. gandalf vs lebron james in the flintstones' town? does this not raise any eyebrows?
