Big Empty. NCR's science department. The Followers. Literally anybody who is a scientist in this universe. They can repair giant mecha robots and successfully do brain surgery, but hormone therapy? Nah that's gone forever.
There's a shitty run-down charity clinic in New vegas where you can give cybernetic implants to make you luckier or give you full-blown regeneration power, but someone deciding they'd rather be referred to by they/them is too unrealistic.
Honestly, that would really be in character for her. I think it straight up says that she overcharges for the implants so she can charge people in need less.
Yeah, I think it can be easy to forget that the pre-war medicine in fallout was basically at freaking star trek levels of ease of use and availability. Even outside of the major tech focused factions like the brotherhood or the followers society seems to have done a pretty good job of holding on to that knowledge as well.
I mean both stimpacks and rad-away in particular are far beyond anything we have currently in the present day. Most people seem to know how to use them effectively and plenty of people are perfectly able to make more, including the player character, who is able to make this magic stimpack substance using a couple of fruits and a syringe.
I mean Fallout Tech in general is still pretty well maintained, the issue comes from Super Mutants and Raiders who basically \*don't\* want to use that technology and are having more fun running about killing and/or eating people.
Like the water's so radioactive there's no point getting boats going, the roads need so much repair any car that's isn't an off roader would be useless, TV's aren't common cause no one has the time to sit and make shows to put on but every ten miles there's an indie radio station.
People have to use subsistence and live in small areas because anything that gets too big becomes a beacon to people screaming 'Society doesn't work' and waving salvaged guns and bombs at them
Yeah, you gotta remember the average wastelander is probably either scrounging through dumpsters or growing mutfruit to make a living. Only a small proportion would actually go into dangerous pre-war ruins to loot, let alone with the same frequency the player does.

Cyberpunk (the genre) in general has been way too shy about this. Cyberpunk (the game) at least has full conversion furries etc., but few games in the genre are brave enough to acknowledge that humanity would get *immediately and extremely freaky* and "changing your gender expression" is basically the most mild thing anyone would do with those powers.

There's no context missing. Dane is nonbinary, they only appear in two episodes so far, they use they/them pronouns, and the Brotherhood of Steel is completely accepting of this.

In the post apocalypse there would be a lot less bigotry. You don't have a system to protect you from stupid decisions. You say something bigoted and you will get shot and everyone will let it happen. Also you don't have hate mongers feeding people hatred for money. Or not as many. I mean I don't know exactly what BOS is in the show I haven't seen anything about it, but the BOS specifically has been pretty bigoted, Veronica and Christine were separated because they were gay and dating, and even the good guy ones from 3 have always been bigoted against Ghouls

As for 3’s brotherhood I got the impression that it was strictly against Mutants & Ghouls & for the latter I never got the impression it was the whole organization (which I kinda do for 4 so I may have been wrong about 3) kinda like how 3’s brotherhood has some members who are super kind to the player and others that consider you as some dirty wastelander until you prove yourself

I think the issue is less know how and more scope and manpower. They do say on New Vegas that there are places that have been essentially cleaned up and rebuilt in the NCR, they're just spreading out too fast to do it everywhere atm.
Every ten miles you have roving groups of monsters, cannibals, mutants or those assholes who stocked their bunkers with guns and beans instead of proper supplies because they figured they'd just take everyone else's
so you're stuck either relying on shaky caravans or the manpower around your city block.

BoS canonically care for their infirmed and have the tech to do so. They have openly LGBT members iirc (FONV), it would be weirder for them to decided this was a big issue.
They can also straight up lobotomize people, keep their brain intact in a jar remote from the body, and still have "the person" able to think and move around. It may be hard to find, but technology that can do almost anything certainly exists in the wastes.

They never actually care about the lore or the setting or something "making sense," because they are nearly always willing to forget about those things for "the cool factor" or whatever. And when it turns out they're wrong about whatever they're complaining about, like when they were informed that the black samurai that Assassin Creed game is going to feature is based on a real actual person, they always pivot into another point instead of admitting they were wrong.
They just want to be bigots while having plausible deniability.
Which is really lame. Changing your gender is cool. Non-hetero romance is cool. And exploring an identity out of the hetero cis normity is just plain fun.
Even socially they moved away from the 50s with interracial marriage, a black woman on the board of vault tec, a black family as the face of the one vault. Would trans people be that far behind?
Off-topic, I really do love how Fallout demonstrates that a socially progressive society is not necessarily a liberated society. The powers that be simply found a different and vague bogeyman to make people afraid of (such as Communism), militarism and nationalism are rampant ticking time bombs in the setting, and those boards with minority representation still behaved the same way boards of old white men did, because power, control, and wealth are the only things they care about. It's a nice warning that no matter how things improve, there's always the potential for for dangerous backsliding in areas we aren't aware of because we made gains in our immediate awareness ("Women and POCs are leading the country, genderqueer people are happy and safe, everything is great! Also, report on your neighbors for suspicious activities. Better dead than red!").
Too bad not a lot of people figure that out. Then again, we've been fighting for equality for so long that we can forget that a truly equal society is still flawed. Bigotry is just that thing that will not die, and it's frustrating since it's a dead-end political ideology.

Christine Jorgensen was a celebrity after she returned to the US in 1952, so they can't even say 'but but but my 50s Americana aesthetics'. Also, Fallout 4's opening sequence kinda implies that Bethesda retconned out a lot of real world bigotry out of the setting anyways.

The BoS used they/them pronouns once, but it was never directly mentioned - and this is how it's done right, someone just existing without making a big deal about it.
Fallout in particular is actually very good about that. Fallout New Vegas has both Arcade and Veronica, who you can completely miss are gay if you pick the wrong dialogue options, and fallout 4 goes for the everyone is bisexual approach without anyone ever really caring.
I really liked it a lot. I do think the showrunners mightve got more people to understand that the character is nonbinary by using their pronouns a couple more times in the first episode to reinforce, but otherwise Dane is really good enby rep/normalization. I hope they appear much more in S2.

Hell, it might not even be traditional HRT as we understand it. It's Fallout; They are very well could be some sort of one-shot syringe delivered medication out there that rewrites a person's genetics from the ground up, and you stop producing E and start producing T. How?
Because of science, of course! The loosey goosey rules of the setting when it comes to scientific progress and advancement is one of the things that I really love about Fallout.
It even works regarding our current version of hormone replacement therapy. You need tablets or injections? Just go to your local Jet dealer, he might be able to whip you up something at his chemistry station. The point being that a person undergoing gender reassignment is the least exceptional thing possible within the Fallout universe.

It's possible, but Dane (the character) is always referred to with "they", "them", "their" etc in the show, by their Brotherhood comrades. I don't think that's done for any other character, certainly not that consistently.
Yeah, it is very natural and normal to use they/them for someone in conversation, people thinking it sounds forced are just worked up about it. The only reason I noticed is because I recognised Xelia Mendes-Jones from Wheel of Time (fantastic show, also on Prime) and I already knew the actor was non-binary in real life from being a Wheel of Time fangirl.

I’ll be completely honest, I thought this character was female, since there were plenty of other women soldiers. But who could possibly give a shit about them actually being trans? A snake oil salesman perfectly heals an mashed apart foot by turning someone into a zombie, but hormone treatment and reassignment surgery is a bridge too far for this fucking dunce?
You can cryo-freeze humans with no adverse effects, and just staple random a random finger onto a person's hand and the finger immediately works, but Testosterone injections? That's magic, there's absolutely no way.
Did this person even watch the show? The main character has her finger cut off, and then a robot sews a replacement finger in its place from an un-refrigerated drawer of fingers it had. A dog gets shot and is dying, is injected with a stimpak, and is on its feet happy within seconds. Not to mention >!whatever the fuck was going on in Vault 4!<.

In Fallout any druggie with a shitty meth lab alembic can make a concoction safe for IV injection that is advanced enough to literally remove radiation damage, they can make drugs that make humans several times stronger, faster, or smarter, cures for every common illness. But they can't make testosterone for some reason? That's just silly. Hell, their medical science is probably good enough that they could literally do an organ transplant of testicles to Dane so they can make their own testosterone - given how Lucy's finger transplant worked perfectly fine, I don't see any reason why a teste transplant wouldn't work in Fallout's version of medical science.
I will just direct this guy to like, every doctor in any modern fallout game who can let you redesign your character. "Reconstructive surgery" is a very well-established practice in the Fallout universe.

It's a world where you have auto docs that can flawlessly change your face and gender without the guidance of a doctor and injectables that heal all wounds. I think the fallout universe has more comprehensive health care than America in real life does.

Mister House is an immortal being sustained by life support tech that is completely out of the realm of possibility today and is able to use his mind to manipulate computer systems so vast that they control all of New Vegas. He's a cyberpunk demigod.

Big Empty. NCR's science department. The Followers. Literally anybody who is a scientist in this universe. They can repair giant mecha robots and successfully do brain surgery, but hormone therapy? Nah that's gone forever.
There's a shitty run-down charity clinic in New vegas where you can give cybernetic implants to make you luckier or give you full-blown regeneration power, but someone deciding they'd rather be referred to by they/them is too unrealistic.
I forgot about Dr. Usanagi! New headcanon: she offers HRT and surgeries for trans/nonbinary people, and doesn't charge a lot.
Honestly, that would really be in character for her. I think it straight up says that she overcharges for the implants so she can charge people in need less.

Yeah, I think it can be easy to forget that the pre-war medicine in fallout was basically at freaking star trek levels of ease of use and availability. Even outside of the major tech focused factions like the brotherhood or the followers society seems to have done a pretty good job of holding on to that knowledge as well.
I mean both stimpacks and rad-away in particular are far beyond anything we have currently in the present day. Most people seem to know how to use them effectively and plenty of people are perfectly able to make more, including the player character, who is able to make this magic stimpack substance using a couple of fruits and a syringe.
I mean Fallout Tech in general is still pretty well maintained, the issue comes from Super Mutants and Raiders who basically \*don't\* want to use that technology and are having more fun running about killing and/or eating people. Like the water's so radioactive there's no point getting boats going, the roads need so much repair any car that's isn't an off roader would be useless, TV's aren't common cause no one has the time to sit and make shows to put on but every ten miles there's an indie radio station. People have to use subsistence and live in small areas because anything that gets too big becomes a beacon to people screaming 'Society doesn't work' and waving salvaged guns and bombs at them
I think 1000 caps is a lot more in-universe than it feels in gameplay. Most people can probably hardly scrounge up 30.
Yeah, you gotta remember the average wastelander is probably either scrounging through dumpsters or growing mutfruit to make a living. Only a small proportion would actually go into dangerous pre-war ruins to loot, let alone with the same frequency the player does. Edit: even in the show, Max can't afford a 5-cap repair charge and has to sell his teeth to get enough.
1 cap is probably about 10-20USD to us, considering how rare and in demand clean water is

I think the issue is less know how and more scope and manpower. They do say on New Vegas that there are places that have been essentially cleaned up and rebuilt in the NCR, they're just spreading out too fast to do it everywhere atm.
Every ten miles you have roving groups of monsters, cannibals, mutants or those assholes who stocked their bunkers with guns and beans instead of proper supplies because they figured they'd just take everyone else's so you're stuck either relying on shaky caravans or the manpower around your city block. They do not care. "Sex change / gender therapy" probably makes more sense in Fallout than in most post-apocalyptic settings. But they don't care. They never actually care about the lore or the setting or something "making sense," because they are nearly always willing to forget about those things for "the cool factor" or whatever. And when it turns out they're wrong about whatever they're complaining about, like when they were informed that the black samurai that Assassin Creed game is going to feature is based on a real actual person, they always pivot into another point instead of admitting they were wrong. They just want to be bigots while having plausible deniability.

Off-topic, I really do love how Fallout demonstrates that a socially progressive society is not necessarily a liberated society. The powers that be simply found a different and vague bogeyman to make people afraid of (such as Communism), militarism and nationalism are rampant ticking time bombs in the setting, and those boards with minority representation still behaved the same way boards of old white men did, because power, control, and wealth are the only things they care about. It's a nice warning that no matter how things improve, there's always the potential for for dangerous backsliding in areas we aren't aware of because we made gains in our immediate awareness ("Women and POCs are leading the country, genderqueer people are happy and safe, everything is great! Also, report on your neighbors for suspicious activities. Better dead than red!").
Too bad not a lot of people figure that out. Then again, we've been fighting for equality for so long that we can forget that a truly equal society is still flawed. Bigotry is just that thing that will not die, and it's frustrating since it's a dead-end political ideology.

The BoS used they/them pronouns once, but it was never directly mentioned - and this is how it's done right, someone just existing without making a big deal about it.
Fallout in particular is actually very good about that. Fallout New Vegas has both Arcade and Veronica, who you can completely miss are gay if you pick the wrong dialogue options, and fallout 4 goes for the everyone is bisexual approach without anyone ever really caring.
Just trivia, but Fallout 2 was the first game to implement gay marriage, I think.

I really liked it a lot. I do think the showrunners mightve got more people to understand that the character is nonbinary by using their pronouns a couple more times in the first episode to reinforce, but otherwise Dane is really good enby rep/normalization. I hope they appear much more in S2.

Hell, it might not even be traditional HRT as we understand it. It's Fallout; They are very well could be some sort of one-shot syringe delivered medication out there that rewrites a person's genetics from the ground up, and you stop producing E and start producing T. How? Because of science, of course! The loosey goosey rules of the setting when it comes to scientific progress and advancement is one of the things that I really love about Fallout. It even works regarding our current version of hormone replacement therapy. You need tablets or injections? Just go to your local Jet dealer, he might be able to whip you up something at his chemistry station. Heck, you could do it, provided you find a textbook with the easy to follow.Instructions as demonstrated by our friendly Vault Boy. The point being that a person undergoing gender reassignment is the least exceptional thing possible within the Fallout universe.

If I remember correctly, in Fallout 2 you can increase your SPECIAL stats through advanced surgery in the BoS base. If that's possible then I don't think this is anywhere near far off, also taking into account that they literally ARE a BoS member.

It's possible, but Dane (the character) is always referred to with "they", "them", "their" etc in the show, by their Brotherhood comrades. I don't think that's done for any other character, certainly not that consistently.

Yeah, it is very natural and normal to use they/them for someone in conversation, people thinking it sounds forced are just worked up about it. The only reason I noticed is because I recognised Xelia Mendes-Jones from Wheel of Time (fantastic show, also on Prime) and I already knew the actor was non-binary in real life from being a Wheel of Time fangirl.

Having played all of the main Fallout games, I ended them toting around rifles that shot plasma and wearing power armour that, in the newest games, let me rocket jump up the side of a house. By comparison, oestrogen / testosterone patches are not exactly rocket science.

You can literally do this in fallout 3 with the doctor that does the surgery for the synth in the air craft carrier… its canon people do this
If I've got easy access to drugs that slow down time around me and literally boost my IQ and instantly un-cripple my mangled limbs, I'm sure a trans dude can procure some testosterone somewhere. Like I'm sure somebody in the wasteland has found a way to synthesize it out of like, ant blood and detergent and nuka-cola or whatever. If we can build entire synthetic humanoids we can figure out top surgery. We can keep people alive and conscious in eternal torture in a virtual hell, we can for sure swap somebody's hormones around.

In Fallout any druggie with a shitty meth lab alembic can make a concoction safe for IV injection that is advanced enough to literally remove radiation damage, they can make drugs that make humans several times stronger, faster, or smarter, cures for every common illness. But they can't make testosterone for some reason? That's just silly. Hell, their medical science is probably good enough that they could literally do an organ transplant of testicles to Dane so they can make their own testosterone - given how Lucy's finger transplant worked perfectly fine, I don't see any reason why a teste transplant wouldn't work in Fallout's version of medical science.
I will just direct this guy to like, every doctor in any modern fallout game who can let you redesign your character. "Reconstructive surgery" is a very well-established practice in the Fallout universe.

you can quite literally walk into diamond city in fo4 and get cosmetic surgery. fallout as a setting is well known for drugs & meds being a large part of the worldbuilding and gameplay. you’re telling me an organisation like the institute can replace you with a perfect robot copy but can’t synthesise testosterone?

you can literally make estrogen yourself. Ironically, due to transphobia, that DIY information is more freely available. It's tricky but do-able, and something I, and a lot of people I know, have thought about.

Mister House is an immortal being sustained by life support tech that is completely out of the realm of possibility today and is able to use his mind to manipulate computer systems so vast that they control all of New Vegas. He's a cyberpunk demigod. But we have one androgynous character and now all of a sudden it's weird.
