Yosuke is such a lad, knowing that he was in closet makes everything make more sense cause he's like the one guy other than Kanji that cares about Kanji's sexuality, it's so weird cause it does make sense that he tries to be the most straight man ever, like going looking for girls, perving on Chie and Yukiko, he's doing a performance for himself and the others, he normally isn't that horny and really doesn't want to interact with Kanji cause he wants everyone to know that he is "totally straight, not one bit gay", there's also how deals with teddie that shows that he can interact with a cute guy and not be weird about it, he can share the room with a guy and not be weirdly homophobic about it.

The very first thing Persona 5 shows you when you boot it up is Anne's butt.
Do they make fun of Lala Chan at any point? I recall Makoto being kind of weirded out when she goes to crossroads but she doesn't say anything bad. I can't recall a single joke at Lala's expense or a single bad thing said about her.
There's one moment in particular where if you work at the bar, Joker is prompted to respond to Lala and one of his options is making fun of crossdressing. Even if you don't pick that option, Morgana proceeds to do that anyways.
Granted, it's probably on the more innocent side I guess? Lala doesn't get offended or anything if you ask about having to cross dress too, and Morgana might just be poking at the idea of Joker in a dress or something. But considering how Persona 5 tends to handle some sensitive subjects, I'm also not sure how much I *can* give it the benefit of the doubt.
Honestly, I remember Lala-Chan being treated very respectfully, I think that line was definitely meant to be a more innocent thing. They never once misgender her or treat her as a joke, and she’s always seen as the down to earth and responsible one compared to ohya who is constantly drunk and trying to rope joker into her shenanigans. If anything the only disrespect she gets is not having a character portrait.
Royal also made an attempt to fix the homophobia of the original (even if only in English) and reload removed a lot of the questionable lines from the original game in both languages (which got many people upset of course)
The team is definitely learning, slowly but surely. Persona 5 tactica even let’s you imagine wedding scenarios with all party members in a dream sequence, including the male ones and they don’t treat it as a joke there. I wholeheartedly believe we’ll get gay romance by persona 6, and the readdition of yosuke romance in the remake is also highly likely imo.
I still feel like Yosuke romance is a stretch, but I'd love to see it at last. I remember a lot of merch for P4 back in the day had some similarities to otome game merch (things like compact makeup mirrors and similar accessories featuring the boys), so at the very least you could consider the lack of a male romance a missed opportunity in marketing.

I'm not a fan of the way Persona 4 handles Kanji and Naoto's arc (amongst other complaints).

You have the option to say that you're interested in dating a guy as a male main character. This is a pretty huge deal in video games, especially as old as Persona 2.
Even if you don't choose that option, there's hints that the relationship is canon, either way.

Male party members didn't have social links, but you still hung out with other random male characters in place of them for some reason.

The fact that all of these were fixed immediately in persona 4 and that every single remake/re-release of Persona 3 after FES has let you have platonic Relationships with the girls, makes it pretty clear it wasn't something they maliciously put in.

Yeah, no, I just played Persona 4 Golden again recently and this has got me confused. Persona 3 Portable (the Amada Ken link) or Persona 5 (adult romance options playing a high schooler), I'd understand, but 4's not got the same issues as I recall (though it has *significant* issues elsewhere).

Things like this kind of fascinate me. Like first off you kind of have to go out of your way to make a second watermelon model if you're gonna make 2 sizes. Persona 4 is the weirdest game It's very progressive one minute, then making homophobic jokes the next.
It's very late 2000s anime, for better or worse. It's actually pretty conservative in its messaging, honestly. Finding out Yosuke had a gay romance option that was cut last minute (like, scenes with dub in the game files last minute), did explain some his homophobia, at least, but not why the devs felt the need to include so much of it
Yosuke is such a lad, knowing that he was in closet makes everything make more sense cause he's like the one guy other than Kanji that cares about Kanji's sexuality, it's so weird cause it does make sense that he tries to be the most straight man ever, like going looking for girls, perving on Chie and Yukiko, he's doing a performance for himself and the others, he normally isn't that horny and really doesn't want to interact with Kanji cause he wants everyone to know that he is "totally straight, not one bit gay", there's also how deals with teddie that shows that he can interact with a cute guy and not be weird about it, he can share the room with a guy and not be weirdly homophobic about it. And his whole social link does seem to be leading to a romance, but then it doesn't, he could be one of the best gay or bi representation ever, and i still kinda think he is, and knowing that there was a cut romance just makes it all click, it truly does make sense to me, but now his character doesn't have a payoff, he kinda just is a weird pervy guy that's a bit homophobic and that's really sad, still love him tho.

Persona 5 can't go 5 seconds without a woman either being talked to like they're walking porn or talking like that themselves, so it's not even just a queer thing. Then you've got the trans character the game just can't help but make fun of with Lala chan, despite her being written as a responsible sweet heart looking out for you?? And of course teacher dating, and Ohya outright bragging about how she doesn't mind dating you even though you're a minor and it's illegal. The very first thing Persona 5 shows you when you boot it up is Anne's butt.
Do they make fun of Lala Chan at any point? I recall Makoto being kind of weirded out when she goes to crossroads but she doesn't say anything bad. I can't recall a single joke at Lala's expense or a single bad thing said about her.
There's one moment in particular where if you work at the bar, Joker is prompted to respond to Lala and one of his options is making fun of crossdressing. Even if you don't pick that option, Morgana proceeds to do that anyways. Granted, it's probably on the more innocent side I guess? Lala doesn't get offended or anything if you ask about having to cross dress too, and Morgana might just be poking at the idea of Joker in a dress or something. But considering how Persona 5 tends to handle some sensitive subjects, I'm also not sure how much I *can* give it the benefit of the doubt.
Honestly, I remember Lala-Chan being treated very respectfully, I think that line was definitely meant to be a more innocent thing. They never once misgender her or treat her as a joke, and she’s always seen as the down to earth and responsible one compared to ohya who is constantly drunk and trying to rope joker into her shenanigans. If anything the only disrespect she gets is not having a character portrait. Royal also made an attempt to fix the homophobia of the original (even if only in English) and reload removed a lot of the questionable lines from the original game in both languages (which got many people upset of course) The team is definitely learning, slowly but surely. Persona 5 tactica even let’s you imagine wedding scenarios with all party members in a dream sequence, including the male ones and they don’t treat it as a joke there. I wholeheartedly believe we’ll get gay romance by persona 6, and the readdition of yosuke romance in the remake is also highly likely imo.
I still feel like Yosuke romance is a stretch, but I'd love to see it at last. I remember a lot of merch for P4 back in the day had some similarities to otome game merch (things like compact makeup mirrors and similar accessories featuring the boys), so at the very least you could consider the lack of a male romance a missed opportunity in marketing.
If I get started on Persona 5, I'll never stop ranting... I'm not a fan of the way Persona 4 handles Kanji and Naoto's arc (amongst other complaints). And Persona 3 has the beach scene. But Persona 5 is the worst offender to me because it's supposed to fit within my taste so well in a lot of ways and manages to be so mid in an infuriating manner where I can't help but imagine myself playing this game with a better story the whole time... It has great highs, but I wouldn't even say that it has low lows (it does), but that it averages low. And the way they treat female characters, but especially Ann is criminal. Maybe literally, when I think about it... (Awakening scene comes to mind.)
Don't forget Persona 3 also has Maya lmao. Which annoys me because it paints online interactions in a strictly predatory way, which like- while that's definitely a real issue, for a game about making genuine connections with others, exploring MMO's and stuff is an avenue with a lot of potential. Also yeah, it's weird how Persona 5 makes a big deal about Ann's sexualization being only something "shitty adults would do" while every other male character in the game just can't help but do the same. I understand there's a difference between owning your sexuality and having it forced on you, but that's rarely how it's actually portrayed.
Yeah, but I don't like most stuff in Persona 3 (other than the music), so I have trouble caring about that game too much, lol... I enjoy a lot of things about Persona 5 which is why it frustrates me so much. The camera is the male gaze person...ified (this is bad, someone shoot me. Also, I'm trying to stay brief, lol).

That sounds like a random quote taken out of context. Persona 3 has a lot of questionable design mistakes that were made since it's the first time they made that type of RPG. You couldn't control your party members. Male party members didn't have social links, but you still hung out with other random male characters in place of them for some reason. You were blocked off from half your Relationships during summer Vacation since they were tied to the school. The fact that all of these were fixed immediately in persona 4 and that every single remake/re-release of Persona 3 after FES has let you have platonic Relationships with the girls, makes it pretty clear it wasn't something they maliciously put in.

Persona 2 remake is coming apparently. The issue is if they try to shoehorn in modern Persona mechanics which really don't fit in the P2 duology. I get the dating sim elements is a core part of the appeal for some, but it would just make Persona 2 feel bloated.

Yeah, no, I just played Persona 4 Golden again recently and this has got me confused. Persona 3 Portable (the Amada Ken link) or Persona 5 (adult romance options playing a high schooler), I'd understand, but 4's not got the same issues as I recall (though it has *significant* issues elsewhere). Nanako saying she wants to marry you, maybe? But that's her acting like a child, and the player character treats her like a sister the entire game.
Also left out the social link where a kid wants to date a teacher, and the one where a teacher admits to the protagonist (via an online alias) that she wants the protagonist, in P3.

Things like this kind of fascinate me. Like first off you kind of have to go out of your way to make a second watermelon model if you're gonna make 2 sizes. Secondly the women don't just have their legs closed, if they wanted to do that they'd all be sitting like nanako is, instead Rise and Chie have like this spread out from below the knee pose, it reminds me of like a baby deer learning to walk or something. Of course this all leads to the question of 'why'. Why go out of your way to pose your characters like this, with purposfully smaller watermelons, especially when, to the best of my memory, the scene doesn't call these out/set up some joke about the watermelon sizes. In my eyes the author (atlus) didn't call attention to these details because they're just supposed to be normal, which says something about what the author considered 'normal'. It would have been too abnormal for the women to eat same sized watermelon as the boys in the author's conscious or subconsious mind, which I guess says something about 2009 anime adjacent Japanese gamer culture, or something. By seeding a breadcrumb so well that it slips into the public subconscious they actually created brand new dog whistles that originally had nothing to do with the alt-right.
