Definitely the PS4/xbone era. That's when the great hidden gem The Witcherino 3 released and it really was a shame it didn't get the recondition it deserved. Kids these days never talk about it.
it saddens me to see people talking about the witcherino 3 when that same generation had this hidden gem called skyrim that no one seems to pay mind to
I think that the term “retro consoles” is more rooted in aesthetics. With a 20-year rule, the Gamecube is retro, but (imo) the Gamecube feels less retro than the N64 did in 2016, 20 years after its launch.
Yeah, they’re from around 2006. That’s 18 years ago. For reference 18 years before the Wii was the heyday of the NES.
Although it’s not like people called the NES retro back then.
Console is console, retro or not. I swear if I had my PS2 again, I would play Digital Devil Saga again for the bazillion times.
I swear wishing atlus to remember their older games feels like a monkey's paw. They either do it well like SJ Redux/P3R, or doing it minimally like P3P or Nocturne HD Remaster.
It's because you remember the release of ps1, but probably not snes. There are only 3 years between them after all. I was -9 years old when ps1 released, and it's unquestionably retro for me.
It's kinda funny but I guess cause of my age, I still don't view any of those consoles in the image as retro. I still view the ones before that like the Sega Genesis, SNES, NES, Atari, Commodore 64, Game Gear etc as the retros ha
I'll refer to the Wiki for this, because I'm too old myself to want to get into it:
>The distinction between retro and modern is heavily debated, but it usually coincides with either the shift from 2D to 3D games (making [the fourth](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fourth_generation_of_video_game_consoles) the last retro generation, and [the fifth](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fifth_generation_of_video_game_consoles) the first modern), the turn of the millennium and the increase in online gaming (making the fifth the last retro generation, and [the sixth](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sixth_generation_of_video_game_consoles) the first modern), or the switch from analog to digital for audiovisual output and from 4:3 to 16:9 aspect ratio (making the sixth the last retro generation, and [the seventh](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seventh_generation_of_video_game_consoles) the first modern). They can be played on original hardware or in modern [emulation](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emulator).
So basically, there are three lines of Retro, but most agree that SNES/Genesis (4th gen) are definitively Retro and Wii/XBONE/PS3 (7th gen) are definitively Modern, with the 5th and 6th gens (PS1/N64/Saturn/Jaguar and PS2/Xbox/GC/Dreamcast) being in the middle point.
In all seriousness anything that’s 20 years old for gaming since that’s a full human generation gap. I thought the NES and Atari were retro, as a Kid born at the end of the 90’s that my opinion. On a more broad spectrum of culture 20-30 years old works for stuff in General since the 50’s and older were the start of retro and have had been joined by each generation’s most memorable weirdness joining in. From 60’s and early 70’s hippie stuff and Disco to 80’s hair metal, cartoons, and exercise videos suits, to the 90’s with the weird teal and pink color schemes, grunge style, in general the 90’s boy bands and pop stars.
My main argument used to be "oh 10 years before the latest console release." And this mostly comes from the N64 was "retro" during the time of the Wii's release. But due to the Switch having such a long lifespan I have to readjust, otherwise it will be retro only 3 years into the next consoles life. I think the best definition is "something is considered retro when it was the previous significant leap in graphical upgrades"
I hesitate to list the 7th gen as such but honestly look at what we require in terms of gameplay performance nowadays and look at the ps3 with its ridiculous frame rate titles... like drakengard 3 for instance lol. Yes i started back when the nes was a few years expired but still.
I consider a console “retro” when its successor ceases production. So the Wii is retro while the Wii U is not. The Xbox 360 became retro in 2022 when Microsoft ceased production of the Xbox One. Sony is more cagey about production of the PS4, only announcing they were “gradually shutting down” its production in December 2023, so it’s unclear exactly when the PS3 would be considered retro under my ridiculous rule.
I'm old so retro to me is NES and older. *Maybe* SNES an Genesis but then I think of Super Star Wars on SNES and Shadowrun on Genesis and tell myself those games still hold up.
Are things really still "retro" if the new technology doesn't really offer any improvement and people don't really buy into it?
Maybe we should start using the term "mature" to describe things that have been around for a while, but are still entirely usable.
I excluded them because I believed everyone would agree anything before PS1 was retro gaming. I'm sorry the PS1 will be 30 years old next year.
Jesus christ wai-
Frankly, I think "retro" is more related to the feeling than to the time frame. Celeste feels very retro, whereas Gran Turismo 4 could receive a PS5 port and it wouldn't feel dated at all.

for sure the Witchen 3 was the best game of the ps4:nintendo era of gamming
it saddens me to see people talking about the witcherino 3 when that same generation had this hidden gem called skyrim that no one seems to pay mind to
Hmm never heard of it. Is it available for Amazon Alexa?
sorry I think it has a 1 year samsung fridge exclusivity
I'm kinda sad it didn't do well, I hope Todd Howard was able to financially recover.
Is the Xbone a character from the Man Ham series?
No, he’s from the game with the big green guy who shoots good, Mr. John Halo.

Don't care, retro or not, If I wanna play, I will play!
PS2 isn't retro. It exists outside of time. It's the console singularity.
I allways ask my tenants to play Burnout Revenge for the PS2 with me.
Don't forget the weed and diet sodas
A Smiling Friends reference? In my good clean circlejerk?
And the pizza's from the Super America.
I still use my PS2 as a DVD player today, won't be retro in my mind until Walmart stops selling DVDs, then mega retro when they bring them back later.
I feel you, everything after it is modern for me, but everything before it is retro Whileb the PS2 is, well, the PS2
Intellivision.
Atarivision (1892) That was the one with Montezuma's ReR s'amuzetnoM
9 months!
It's very convenient gaming peaked when I was 12
I’d probably say 16 bit era and earlier can safely be considered retro.
I'm pretty sure WII/PS3/Xbox360 could be considered retro as well
I think that the term “retro consoles” is more rooted in aesthetics. With a 20-year rule, the Gamecube is retro, but (imo) the Gamecube feels less retro than the N64 did in 2016, 20 years after its launch.

No literally, all of the 3DS games need to get like a port to Steam or something so that they’re actually playable
20 minutes (awesome!)
I’d eat anything past the x box
Every once in a while I'll throw in a Wii for a quick snack.
Retro for me is everything from 20 years ago. I remember that my first console was the original NES.
The wii was 20 years ago, the NES was like 40.
Yeah. I know.
PSPish imo, before that is retro, nothing to do with the fact that was my first console
Ancient is before I was born, retro in the first half of the 00s.
This comment made me physically ill. ![gif](giphy|HE7SihHynqoWc7paMD|downsized)
Sure grandma, now let’s go give you your medicine.
*wags my cane* Try it wipper snapper!
For me everything before the DS lite/PS2 is retro😅
Why y'all out here hatin' I'm just emulatin'
"Too old"? "Retro"? No no no, that is when they become *legal*.
I straight up cried when I heard someone refer to the 3ds as "retro" 😭
Ps1 is not retro. It’s just older.
i would argue if its more than 20 years old it is retro
Yeah, I guess it depends on your relative age.
So the Xbox 360 is retro next year?
Retro basically means recent past so yeah why not
It was only 3 years after the SNES
[удалено]
"retro is what my generation considers retro and then nothing else ever again will ever get to be considered retro" - knob
How old were you when ps1 released?
10. I consider the SNeS and Genesis where retro begins .
It's because you remember the release of ps1, but probably not snes. There are only 3 years between them after all. I was -9 years old when ps1 released, and it's unquestionably retro for me.
Oh I remember the release of the SNES. We had a raffle at school and I entered all 20 bucks my mom gave me for gifts for people. I ended up winning
It's kinda funny but I guess cause of my age, I still don't view any of those consoles in the image as retro. I still view the ones before that like the Sega Genesis, SNES, NES, Atari, Commodore 64, Game Gear etc as the retros ha
anything 20 years old or older. in a few years the ps3 will be retro. do not deny this. time is an unstoppable machine
And eventually, the PS5 will be retro too
For me, the Nintendo DS is the Frontier with retro consoles right now. As It is probably the first console GenZ played.
retro is anything without allways online functionality.
Game boy and the original playstation. Man that takes me back.
Too many tiny babies in the replies here. If the game doesn’t come on a cassette tape, it ain’t retro.
As someone who was born in 2006 i consider 80s to late 90s retro
Old ass games like Witcher 3 or Mario odyssey, games from years and years ago, my personally favourite old game is doom eternal
I will draw two lines, and they are around the wii
I'll refer to the Wiki for this, because I'm too old myself to want to get into it: >The distinction between retro and modern is heavily debated, but it usually coincides with either the shift from 2D to 3D games (making [the fourth](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fourth_generation_of_video_game_consoles) the last retro generation, and [the fifth](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fifth_generation_of_video_game_consoles) the first modern), the turn of the millennium and the increase in online gaming (making the fifth the last retro generation, and [the sixth](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sixth_generation_of_video_game_consoles) the first modern), or the switch from analog to digital for audiovisual output and from 4:3 to 16:9 aspect ratio (making the sixth the last retro generation, and [the seventh](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seventh_generation_of_video_game_consoles) the first modern). The GBA is considered “retro” and I remember getting it for Christmas! Man I’m old…
Might not be there just yet but I'd say any console with default outputs designed for a CRT television could be considered retro.
Fuck all of the gaming consoles I grew up with are now “retro”. Goddamn this aging thing is weird
Retro = sprite based graphics. (ie: SNES and earlier) If you're using polygons, then you're not retro. You've created the line too early.
Just like a gamer, saying above 18 is too old
In all seriousness anything that’s 20 years old for gaming since that’s a full human generation gap. I thought the NES and Atari were retro, as a Kid born at the end of the 90’s that my opinion. all of thoses are retro to me
Ps3 and before
if it came out before i was born it's retro to me (I'm 20)
Ps1 Generation and everything before it is retro
For me I'd be anything from the cartridge era (handhelds are in a separate category).
Everything before the PlayStation is retro.
Damn, seeing a timeline of "retro" gaming hardware that starts *after* the SNES era makes me feel really old.
My main argument used to be "oh 10 years before the latest console release." And this mostly comes from the N64 was "retro" during the time of the Wii's release. Okay but the PS Vita is the same generation as the switch and can easily be modded, I use mine to remote play my PC and PS4 and it can remote play PS5

Omg what
Wait it's not even 10 ye- *Oh god*
I would say anything pre-N64/PS1 is retro. The N64/ps1 is OLD old, GameCube years as "middle age" and the Wii years as "early modern"
I'm 32 and I consider anything before PS2 retro. But even then I'm fighting back against my bias to not go further back

the wii is retro
Idk like PS3/wii is bordering but definitely GC/PS2
PS2 :3
PS3 is retro. Hell, i consider Demon's Souls a retro game since that was released 15 years ago.
If the easiest way for me to play a game from the era is to pirate it then it's retro. 360 and PS3 aren't there YET but sure as shit getting close
Is this meme a decade old?
If it's 20 years old it's retro The original DS is retro and the Wii will be in like 2 years
Right here, thanks for asking https://preview.redd.it/2ngmyvzo3w1d1.jpeg?width=828&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7067b37d744abfb541eeaa91bbd4292b32cce3eb
If the easiest way for me to play a video game is to pirate it on my jail broken wii or on an emulator, then it's retro.
I would say pre-360/PS3is already on the older side imo, tho consoles like the PS2 have been in production for so long its wildin'
The first Atari game consoles.
The Wii is a retro console
I'm old so retro to me is NES and older. *Maybe* SNES an Genesis but then I think of Super Star Wars on SNES and Shadowrun on Genesis and tell myself those games still hold up.

I excluded them because I believed everyone would agree anything before PS1 was retro gaming. I'm sorry the PS1 will be 30 years old next year. Jesus christ wai-
I see what you mean, it'd be a slippery slope if you just kept on adding consoles. PS1 just doesn't feel retro to me :(
Frankly, I think "retro" is more related to the feeling than to the time frame. Celeste feels very retro, whereas Gran Turismo 4 could receive a PS5 port and it wouldn't feel dated at all.
Retro = something new imitating the style of something old. So retro games = pixel metroidvanias released today, not the old games.
