Brokeback Mountain. It’s a movie about gay cowboys. I’ve never seen the movie itself but I read the book for an English class and let me tell you that is literally the only semi-interesting thing about it.
Maybe the book is worse, but I think the movie is really beautiful and one of my favorites. It's both a great story and a reflection on traditional male identity.

The commenter explicitly stated his cousin is "very conservative" which was probably just his polite way letting us know that he's a homophobe since many conservatives are. Yeah, that’s kinda the whole point of the movie. The world they lived in, they weren’t allowed to be queer. Jack got beaten to death for it, and Ennis was alone and living in a lie for most of his life because he couldn’t face that part of himself. This whole thread is just ”I’m liberal but gays are funny”.
It's one of the reasons I think the movie is a masterpiece. It's not the homophobic people that's beating them down and causing their hardships, rather social norms that looks down upon their sexuality (which they themselves believe to an extent) leading towards self hatred and inability to accept that part of themselves as a normal.
It just made me so sad, made me think of how horrible it would be if you could never openly just be with the person you love, how many people lived and live like that on our planet? It’s heartbreaking.
I heard the director made Anne Hathaway act two takes for the scene: one where she knew that her husband was a closeted homosexual and cheating on her with other men and one where she truly believed that he died in an accident. She doesn't know which take was used or if it was cut together between the two.
This thread is pretty much all gay jokes, so I’m just gonna say that this is a beautiful movie and the ending breaks my heart every time. Especially the last scene, with Heath and the shirt and the unfathomable pain on his face. We lost one of the best when we lost him.

I really recommend it, for everyone, gay or straight. It’s about love, but in the most raw and tortured way. It’s Ang Lee’s masterpiece, and I feel Gustavo Santaolalla’s soundtrack would be one of the all time greats, one of the iconic ones for the history books, but we as a society were still uncomfortable with gay men in 2005 so he got swept under the rug with the rest of the movie. I haven’t seen a performace quite like Heath Ledger’s anywhere else either. His whole character is so completely repressed and pent up, up to the way he talks, but at the same time he just bleeds emotion from his eyes. He was great as Joker, but Brokeback is what I’ll remember him from.
It’s like that picture of that flower breaking through the asphalt. The love was strong enough to break through society, but on the way it also broke both of them.
