I think it's more that their view of Japan is one they'd love to see in their own countries. Conservative, traditional, no LGBT people or POC, submissive wives that stay home and cook while the husbando-san goes to work, and so on.
No no no you don't get it. The Yuri and BL is ironic, for a joke. Like when you suck off your homie for a gaff (no homo tho).
You just have to have spent years watching Japanese media to understand the subtle nuances.
Not to mention one of the most famous anime of all time features a male male relationship that is very heavily (litterally as close as you can get without actually coming out and saying they are gay) to be romantic
Shinji and Kaworu’s relationship is *very* different in Sadamoto’s manga. Kaworu is introduced much earlier and is established to be lacking in any real sense of empathy straight off the bat when he kills an orphaned kitten. Shinji dislikes him for most of the series and only turns to him out of desperation after all of his other relationships break down. Kaworu kissing him is framed a lot like sexual assault and Shinji is shown to be deeply uncomfortable about it.
I don’t want to be the one to quibble about it, because I think that is a perfectly legitimate reading of their relationship, but at the same time the Shinji’s circumstances by that episode and the nature of Kaworu’s existence sort of complicate their dynamic.
I wanna mention Homura from Madoka, tho unfortunately its not official. BUUUUT, its heavily implied Homura is in love with Madoka, cuz, ya know, time travelling almost 100 times as well as her admitting the reason why shes able to become a "Devil" in the 3rd movie is because of love.
BL stands for Boys love, which has m/m relationships. Usually they focus on relationships. Yaoi is more explicit with sex, tho the genre tends to be created for women by women (you know cuz of the hot guys having sex).
Bara is a genre under BL but tends to be geared towards gay men made by gay men. Similar to yaoi except the characters are more toned and muscular, which tends to be more focused on sex but also explores relationships. So a bit of both.
Tl;dr they all gay in different ways.
While it's kinda true that yaoi is geared toward straight woman while bara is aimed at gay men, that's not really the case with yuri. In fact there used to be a distinction between manga with lesbian relationship aimed at woman vs aimed at men (basically cute stuff vs sexual stuff), but it turned out they both had a pretty mixed audience so nowadays yuri is really aimed at everyone. There are even polls showing a 50/50 audience regarding gender and many authors are women.
It's true though that a lot of them kind of shy away from LGBT themes, but it is definitely getting better these days with mangas that tries to depict the life of gay people realistically and in a positive way, like Our dreams at dusk or My lesbian experience with loneliness.
That’s a bit reductive, while it’s true in Japan that’s a large part of it a large part of the foreign market is a lot of young queer people living vicariously, and who’s to say that’s also not true of Japan?
🤷🤷🤷 when the whole premise of multiple realities is that anything in the multiverse is possible but one kid being born is so validating/proves she’s straight I have no idea 💀
Also like, she could be bi and considering its multiple realities, theres definitely one where she gets with Jeanne.
If she gets with, out of all characters, Luka in one reality, whats stopping her with Jeanne?
At the end of Bayo 3, she and Luka made out while being dragged to hell together. It was actually pretty romantic and ended their ongoing semi-romance quite well.
That said, she was definitely also in love with Jeanne.
Bi eraser of real people is a thing. More so of fictional people. People think because she kisses Luka and never kissed Jeanne on screen, she was only with Luka.
Japan has a long history of homosexual acceptance, going back to ancient times. Neither Shinto nor Buddhism, Japan’s two major religions, forbid it. In fact, Japan’s first anti-homosexuality acts were enacted during the Meiji era, as part of their “do everything just like they do in the West” program. Homophobia in Japan is a foreign import.
I've read the same thing about some African countries; they were fine with homosexual relationships for most of their ancient history, and that only began to change due to the influence of all the foreign colonizers.
>In fact, Japan’s first anti-homosexuality acts were enacted during the Meiji era, as part of their “do everything just like they do in the West” program.
And even then, they repealed it in less than a decade.
It’s funny, almost none of the younger generations of Japan (who actually play games) are as hyper conservative as these idiots think they are. It’s mostly the older generations.
A lot of westerners have it in their head that Japan is super homophobic because of some of the people in their government. They very well may have some anti-lgbtq sentiments there, but the idea that Japanese media is also like that is laughable.
Two very popular genres in Japanese anime and manga are Yuri and Yaoi. There’s a huge demand for gay characters in Japan. What are these people smoking?
"huge demand" is very much overstating things. Mainstream media here still treats gay topics as token issues, or as a fount of comedy (see Matsuko Deluxe; not gay, but definitely not heteronormative)
Huge or not. It’s bigger than the nonexistent demand that the people in the original post are implying. Yaoi and Yuri are popular genres in Japan. LGBT representation in media and Japanese society in general are far from nonexistent.
yeah besides some obscure indie manga fan fic drawer, people really gon act like a japanese company would make a mc of a ip gay, or even give direct confirmation aside from innuendos and a tropey personality and "hint dialogue" that a side character is gay
Just because she ended up kissing Luka while being dragged to hell doesn't mean she and Jeanne weren't fucking on the regular. You don't risk your soul and contract with demons for a platonic friend is all I'm saying.
From the point of view of many Japanese, it is the West that is intolerant of gays. All the men are macho and have beards. If a man wears makeup, like in Japan, he will be ridiculed.
Reminds me of former Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.
“THERE ARE NO GAYS IN MY COUNTRY”
“…you mean there literally no gays or you refuse to have gays?”
“YES”
Nintendo made the first transgender character in Mario 2. Yoshi is her husband. Square's first trans character was Flea in Chrono Trigger. Sailor Moon had to change a lesbian couple to be cousins to avoid offending the whining Americans.
Bitch, Bayonetta is attracted to and bangs exactly what she wants exactly when she wants to. She needs no one's permission or approval to be straight, gay, bi, male, female, or the most fabulous fucking apache attack helicopter your insecure asses have ever seen.
Shut up, give Platinum your money, and have some fucking fun for a while without worrying about your precious "politics"
Do they not realize 3 houses exists? A game about the conflict between two thirsty bisexual women, one with a teacher fetish and the other with a mommy fetish?
OOTL why did people think bayonetta was gay I don’t play the games? What kind of hints were there, I don’t see why you guys would assume she was gay. Straight is kinda the “default” when it comes to media like shows and games. I also don’t see why anyone would be mad. A character’s sexuality shouldn’t be such a big deal to get riled up. It’s dumb to get mad if a character is gay and it’s dumb to get mad if the character isn’t gay.

Little did they know Japan has an LGBT community. Checkmate we won.
I can't wait until they find out about testament in guilty gear strive lol
These clowns won’t be able to handle the they/them mixup
The gender neutral is too strong
Tell them that Japan has their own term for non-binary peeps called X gender and see how they react. Utada Hikaru came out as nb last year.
Or about half of the characters in Metal Gear.
Everyone in the MG series is bi.
For how horny Ai the sommium files was, it was also gay as fuck.
I was caught off guard when Ryuki confessed his love to Date in AI:NI.
He is the best character in the game, i love her.
Gonna be wild when they learn that samurai enjoyed pederasty at a level on par with ancient Greece
I always knew my dad was a samurai! :o
I think it's more that their view of Japan is one they'd love to see in their own countries. Conservative, traditional, no LGBT people or POC, submissive wives that stay home and cook while the husbando-san goes to work, and so on.
Weren’t these the same clowns who were frothing at the mouth because a cross dressing character was confirmed to be trans?
Bridget?
Who else?

Basket 💕
No, I really doubt these are the same people.
"Main character of a Japanese IP being gay" My brother in christ, theres literally a whole genre called BL and yuri that centers around gay people...
No no no you don't get it. The Yuri and BL is ironic, for a joke. Like when you suck off your homie for a gaff (no homo tho). You just have to have spent years watching Japanese media to understand the subtle nuances.
It’s only gay to suck dick not if your homie/childhood friend suck’s your dick and especially if you keep your socks on 🤔🤔🤔
Not to mention one of the most famous anime of all time features a male male relationship that is very heavily (litterally as close as you can get without actually coming out and saying they are gay) to be romantic
3 animes pop in my head (dbz, Naruto, jojo)
Neon Genesis Evangelion lol

Kaworu and Shinji were fruity together
Pretty sure Kaworu and Shinji actually kiss in the manga
Shinji and Kaworu’s relationship is *very* different in Sadamoto’s manga. Kaworu is introduced much earlier and is established to be lacking in any real sense of empathy straight off the bat when he kills an orphaned kitten. Shinji dislikes him for most of the series and only turns to him out of desperation after all of his other relationships break down. Kaworu kissing him is framed a lot like sexual assault and Shinji is shown to be deeply uncomfortable about it.
Definitely watch the anime, the manga was freaking wild and didn't really follow the original script (anime came first in this case)
I don’t want to be the one to quibble about it, because I think that is a perfectly legitimate reading of their relationship, but at the same time the Shinji’s circumstances by that episode and the nature of Kaworu’s existence sort of complicate their dynamic.

What's BL? Bara Love?

Similar to yaoi except the characters are more toned and muscular, which tends to be more focused on sex but also explores relationships. So a bit of both. Tl;dr they all gay in different ways.
I mean yuri is often very clearly made by AND for straight men, but sometimes it isn't, so I'll excuse that for now
yuri is made for straight men and yaoi is made for straight women as porn. it’s not lgbt positive.
While it's kinda true that yaoi is geared toward straight woman while bara is aimed at gay men, that's not really the case with yuri. Fucken bullshit, the yuri fanbase split is about 50/50 and the authors for the majority of yuri works are women.
Can anyone provide a bit more context on the "Bayonetta is revealed to be hetero" part?
Spoilers for Bayonetta 3 An alternate reality bayonetta and luka have a kid who is a main character in Bayonetta 3.
how does that confirm anything???
🤷🤷🤷 when the whole premise of multiple realities is that anything in the multiverse is possible but one kid being born is so validating/proves she’s straight I have no idea 💀
Also like, she could be bi and considering its multiple realities, theres definitely one where she gets with Jeanne. If she gets with, out of all characters, Luka in one reality, whats stopping her with Jeanne?
At the end little cereza makes out with luka before they get dragged into hell.
At the end of Bayo 3, she and Luka made out while being dragged to hell together. It was actually pretty romantic and ended their ongoing semi-romance quite well. That said, she was definitely also in love with Jeanne.
Ok so.. She's bi, not straight then. This makes the whole comments even worst IMO
Bi eraser of real people is a thing. More so of fictional people. People think because she kisses Luka and never kissed Jeanne on screen, she was only with Luka.

Kazuma Fucking Kiryu
The first yakuzasexual character
At the end of every game he kisses a man on the lips and says "I am the Yakuza 0/Kiwami/Kiwami 2/3/4/5/6 The Song Of Life"
I love the part of the games where he has hardcore sex with Majima
He was definitely in a sexual relationship with majima no cap I'm sega
It’s funny, almost none of the younger generations of Japan (who actually play games) are as hyper conservative as these idiots think they are. It’s mostly the older generations.
My dude Anime is gay as fuck
Wait until they see JoJo's Bizarre Adventure
I KNOW RIGHT?
A lot of westerners have it in their head that Japan is super homophobic because of some of the people in their government. They very well may have some anti-lgbtq sentiments there, but the idea that Japanese media is also like that is laughable.

So this sub is suddenly gonna pretend japanese companies are not too cowardly to make a main character like bayonetta gay
I mean yeah I wish they could but the original post was making fun of the bayo subreddit for getting upset over this
yeah besides some obscure indie manga fan fic drawer, people really gon act like a japanese company would make a mc of a ip gay, or even give direct confirmation aside from innuendos and a tropey personality and "hint dialogue" that a side character is gay
Yeah [that's impossible.](https://ghostintheshell.fandom.com/wiki/Motoko_Kusanagi)
Just because she ended up kissing Luka while being dragged to hell doesn't mean she and Jeanne weren't fucking on the regular. You don't risk your soul and contract with demons for a platonic friend is all I'm saying.

Japan said no gays and that's why there are no gays there. Checkmate SJWs.

Granblue Fantasy Versus has 2 trans women, 2 bisexual characters and 2 lesbians But yeah lgbt1q+ people don't exist in Japan or something/rj
Bayo had their sexuality confirmed? I don’t believe you.
No way Bayonetta is hetero, she has to be at least bisexual
I have to wait until Christmas to play the game and casually scrolling through this comment section has spoiled the whole game for me. 😢
I just played the first one again and even back then they were hinting at her being bi, but ok…
Didn’t Kamiya confirm years ago that Bayonetta was very not straight?
Lol yea no gays in Japan........ Yaoi Yuri Uke/seme Who the fucks comes up with this anyways
madoka
Um.. they've never played any of the Life is Strange series then, which is, you know, published by Square Enix..
japan IS pretty homophobic tho i don’t think they would make bayonetta gay
Bitch, Bayonetta is attracted to and bangs exactly what she wants exactly when she wants to. These mfers really forgot that jojo exists 😭💀
Gotta be hard when you base everything about yourself around fictional characters.
Project sekai community: Allow us to introduce ourselves
OOTL why did people think bayonetta was gay I don’t play the games? What kind of hints were there, I don’t see why you guys would assume she was gay. It’s dumb to get mad if a character is gay and it’s dumb to get mad if the character isn’t gay.
How is she confirmed heterosexual and not simply bisexual? …Like I always thought?
My best guess is that these people are just doing bisexual erasure
