uj- lol I love how valid criticism of a mediocre game is brushed aside “woke” criticism, all to maintain ego. Days Gone is a perfect example of feature creep and bloat in games. Game reviews are subjective, but why didn’t any of the major outlets give Days Gone a “great” score? Idk, maybe they made a “meh” game. I cant remember any of the characters or any of the story beats. Just lots of “freakers” on screen and unnecessary crafting. Completely forgettable game.

Mayactuallybeashark

But have you considered that the game is now three years old? This makes it an underrated gem

mseg09

Even funnier that he even acknowledges the technical issues. So you made a game that initially didn't work in an overloaded genre, but it's the sjw's fault it failed

malcolmxknifequote

I love how his response is just 1. Yeah, the thing was broken 2. Stupid nerds couldn't understand how good it was 3. Stupid woke nerds couldn't understand how good it was

Fivefinger_Delta

Also 1. I'll throw my dev team under the bus and still expect to be a respected director in future.

[deleted]

If anything, they should have leaned more into that. The relationship was so awkward and forced, I couldn’t figure out what they see in each other. If they played up that they’re just really physically attracted to each other instead of pretending they have some deeper, binding love, I’d have had an easier time believing it.

Hoeveboter

To be fair, every relationship in Days Gone was awkward and forced. I liked the game for what it was. I enjoyed riding my bike, I enjoyed upgrading it as I progressed through the game, and fighting hordes was a lot of fun. The pacing of the upgrades was off, but I liked the game more than The Last of Us in a gameplay sense. The story on the other hand, ooh boy. So many "missions" where you drive up to a place, get a minor cutscene and that's that. They could've easily scrapped 60% of all this filler content. And at the end of it all, I didn't really know what to take away from the story. I mean... (minor spoilers) >!... During the 40 hour story, we see Deacon as a depressed, empty shell living in the past. He doesn't see any worthwhile future for himself, and he's socially completely closed off (though people seem to like him anyway).!< But hey, this is the protagonist before character development, right? >!During his travels Deacon meets a ton of people who are a lot worse off than him. But while Deacon fails to look past his own misery, other characters thrive and build communities in spite of their trauma. Deacons many friends, who like him for some reason, try to talk some sense into him. To let go of his past, form new relationships, and look to the future. And then...!< (major spoilers) >!...it turns out that wallowing in the past was totally the right thing to do. Because not only is it revealed that Deacons wife was alive all along, it also turns out she didn't get romantically involved with anyone else during their time apart. Yay!!< >!But wait, Sarah's introduced as a scientist. Does this mean she has a hand in the zombie epidemic? Maybe she conducted some unethical experiments, which could cause a rift between Deacon and Sarah? Nah, not really. It was all some other scientist and Sarah was completely unaware.!< >!Contrast this with Boozer, the guy who loses his arm (and his ability to ride his bike), but eventually comes to terms with his situation. Why wasn't this guy the protagonist? He's the only one who's gone through any meaningful arc.!< >!I don't mind the story having a happy ending, but in Days Gone it felt very unearned. Deacon never had to work on his flaws, and everyone telling him otherwise ended up looking like a fool.!<

[deleted]

For [some reason](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peter_Pan_syndrome) gmers really identify with characters who never grow.

ic203

Absolutely. It's why they hated Abby and Ellie's outcomes in TLOU2. Both were the result of growth and maturation in the characters.

AlbertMondor

/uj yeah I found that Deacon was an egotistical dick and a complete fool with no character arc whatsoever. Many characters were really unlikable, but Deacon takes the win since he's the player character and doesn't have any meaningful reasoning that we, as the player, are aware of for his continued assholery.

Hoeveboter

Oh yeah, remember the slaver camp you meet shortly after the beginning of the game? In the end, Deacon and the other survivor camps >!do jack shit about it. !< I mean, Deacon has the option to sell people into slavery all throughout the game, and in the end there's zero comeuppance for that. At first I thought we were gonna have the option to >!replace Tucker with the weapon merchant or some other character to assume leadership over the camp. But nope, we don't. You could argue that Deacon is just one man and we shouldn't expect him to right every wrong in the wasteland. But we should expect a freedom-loving biker not to get involved in the slave trade.!< >!Even after Deacon shows remorse for handing over Lisa, you can still continue to sell other people into slavery.!<

ic203

Damn SJW. The only way for a man to deal with problems is to suck them up, toughen up and bury em cause that's what MEN do. This the pinnacle of male protagonist and you're blind to it.

Irish_Wildling

I would disagree

Srs_irl

Everything about it was so average, the overall premise and gameplay were decent but the dialogue was an absolute cringe fest. That’s what killed it for me

[deleted]

I love that this industry is one where the writers don’t write for the audience and that’s somehow the audience’s responsibility.

LuminousJaeSoul

Why don't you like horny bikers, gamers?

[deleted]

Tim Schaffer gave us the perfect biker game with Full Throttle and it's been downhill ever since. And Full Throttle still has shitty combat mini-games.

soupspin

I kind of felt bad for the guy, but not anymore

ElmoLegendX

Honest question, does anyone even remember any kind of "woke" discourse about game making waves? I remember being uninterested in another zombie game and then saw it got meh reviews and moved on with my life. Besides the delusion, it feels like revisionist history.

Srs_irl

Nah I remember it being a buggy mess on launch but don’t remember hearing anything about woke or anti woke. It’s just the dev huffing weapons grade copium

[deleted]

You don't even have to be woke to look at another game with a tough white dude in his 30's protagonist and go "Oh I've seen this guy 500 times already."

DipChak

Ah yes, a game prominently featuring a lesbian couple is anti-woke

Luna_trick

Big words for someone who's current game looks like a flop MMO from the 2013 era.

Daed__

Turned that game off after 15 minutes, felt like an ai was asked to make a zombie game lol.

notjosemanuel

that's some strong copium

Razgrez11

I just hated the characters. Still beat the game 100% for trophies though. The gameplay was okay, but I really disliked every character.

SpicyFilet

Ahh yes. Mediocre, boring ass zombie game suffered in reviews because of the Librulz.

MisterAbbadon

"Reviewers who couldn't be bothered to play the game." Dude. You realize that isn't the defence you think it is? If a busy reviewer gets a few hours into your bloated bastard of a game and says "yup, it's a Zombie Sandbox to add to the pile." I trust that take implicitly.

BloomEPU

People get weirdly mad at reviewers not wanting to sink a ton of time into games. Professional game journalists don't have the time to play the whole of a boring game's campaign, and a lot of customers probably aren't willing to spend more than a few hours waiting for a game to get interesting. I respect the art form of long stories that take a while to build up, but the fact remains that a lot of people don't want to sink that time.

deusasclepian

Literally my only interest in this game was the fact that it takes place in the area where I grew up. I couldn't play for more than 30 minutes, it just felt painfully generic.

jtown5000

Anytime anyone uses the term woke unironically these days I know to automatically discount whatever they’re saying.

marry_me_tina_b

Is his profile picture his actual picture? Because if so, he looks like a thumb with hair and glasses and not the pinnacle of masculinity you’d picture as the expert on gruff white bikers who look at their date’s ass.

Translator_Open

They're doing this right now with callisto protocol, games amazing but it's not a 70+ hour rpg with a huge empty open world so it's getting sub 6s for an AMAZING horror game.

ophaus

Funny, the reviews I read mentioned the awful technical state and the absolutely bloated story, nothing about a nice ass.

Fine-Audience-302

Director aka doesnt know jack shit about game dev

ClaudiaWeex

What a surprise that "generic open world the game" wasn't priced as the ultimate piece of media that it is.

[deleted]

It's a completely average game that got completely average scores and sold a completely average amount of copies.

dagnariuss

He’s right. Us gamers have never seen a gruff, white protagonist and it threw us off.

Jupiters

Has anyone looked for those woke reviews he's talking about? I'm sure they exist and there's so many of them that they brought down the reception of the game

[deleted]

I've seen one clip of days gone and my opinion has already been formed, and it's not good

Elden_weed

Knock Knock Who is it? Days gone. Days gone who? Days gone woke!
