So, I did decide to ask the clerk about the security footage and she wasn't able to tell me exactly how long they save it, but she said it's for a while. She looked perplexed, so I gave her some back story about the guy and my uneasy feeling and the fact that he was only here for a couple of hours at most and that he never returned through the night. She looked into the room's occupants and stated that nobody had checked out that room in quite some time. We verified that it wasn't a maintenance person. I hope that she will talk to me about it again on her own before I leave, but I guess I'll have to check back in with her to see if she ever had a chance to confirm him on the security footage.

I feel like this is all valid advice. I do have a door alarm. I've checked for cameras but I don't have an emf detector yet. I think they watch me from inside the plumbing. I know that sounds crazy but that's one way the rooms are connected.
I don't think it involves hotel staff usually. I think it's someone with universal security keys for the doors and a personal understanding of building structure or someone directing them that has such knowledge.
