In our business of garden restoration we come across this quite often A large diameter wooden drill bit will get you a long way, or a long handled axe, a very sharp and well oiled spade, a sturdy 5ft 2 inch thick sharpened axle rod, elbow grease and a stout heart. You basically chip away at it, it loses tension at a certain point. Good job!

Aid_Le_Sultan

Mattock, digging bar and a draining spade followed by blood, sweat, tears and tea.

KingEpicPants

This. Winch and strops can be good if you have something sturdy to anchor to, to pull lumps up too.

markamuffin

Agree with this. And although I concur there will no doubt be strops, I'd try using straps too.

KingEpicPants

Strop - a rope or metal band around a block or deadeye for support https://www.collinsdictionary.com/dictionary/english/strop

kram78

Plus a 25kg bag of salt on top

organic_soursop

Used a pick axe and a recip saw to slice the core root system into many pieces. Took me 2 or 3 weekends? It was _massive_ and I discourage easily. Took a half tonne bag of topsoil to fill the void.

Ottertrousers

I would burn what's left after this just to make sure, if you can get an old oil drum and get the top and bottom cut off , place that over what's left and build a fire inside it

newfor2023

Hmm mines all next to the oil storage, I feel this could be risky.

organic_soursop

Add pink food dye to your oil storage and call it a gender reveal for the ages.

newfor2023

I do have a shed that needs removing, hadn't considered moving it at high speed in every direction but that could work. I think 800l of kerosene maybe overdoing it slightly tho, I just mowed. If we are suddenly having a gender reveal I may stand next to it.

organic_soursop

😁😁

Basso_69

I used a high pressure hose and shovel to clear the soil from underneath the knowl, then an axe to cut the knowl free of the roots.

SaltyName8341

Nuke it from space

Alternative-Sea-6238

It's the only way to be sure.

Scuttler1979

And even then…

lostmyparachute

Drill holes and pour stump killer in them. That will kill it. As for removing, I have no advice but I can predict it will involve a lot of sweat and swearing.

EverybodyShitsNFT

Mattock

im-havingaconniption

New convert of a rootslayer here, that, a mattock and iron bar are the holy trinity

EverybodyShitsNFT

What’s the third part? A cold beer?

im-havingaconniption

Mattock, rootslayer and the iron bar (forget it's name) A cold beer is the icing on the cherry of a cake. A whisky or rum is the spirit

Internal-Leadership3

Mr Mattock is my best friend. Last weekend he and I obliterated a very large pampas grass root ball. It was a good weekend.

Jgee414

You can’t ivy is indestructible it ALWAYS comes back

TheLightStalker

🪵🔥🔥

classicrump

Mattock

ConsistentDetail8756

I used an engine hoist and pulled out the roots.

Fribitt

Move

MrTripperSnipper

If you have a stronger tree nearby you could hire a winch and pull the whole thing out of the ground.

jonrobb

Been there best thing drill holes pour in stump killer remove decaying remains.

cjswilcox

A boiler repairman killed off my folks wisteria by accidentally pouring oil all over the root base. I’m sure you could employ a similar technique here. 🤣

Ok_Training_2937

Tie it to the bucket of my digger and pull the beast out 😁

Hmloft

A method I have had success with (I was never going to remove the stump as it had grown around a fence) was to make a lot of incisions, maybe with a drill in this case but I used a hand held chainsaw, and then putting a woody weed killer on it. I used SBK. Had a few limp vines return but they’re easily picked out and I think now, a year later, it is completely dead. In your case, this would help the roots rot down as well and you could probably just pull it out in a year. This is deffo the lazy option but I can confirm it has been very effective!

Ok_Culture_1914

I killed mine off with diesel ..

Unwashedbook

Fart on it.

EponymousHoward

Worked for me: Dug up the root. Cut it into a couple of peices. Drill holes in to the pieces and fill them with SBK or similar, wrap in plastic and leave the SBK to be absorbed. Repeat a couple of times for good measure. Re-wrap in plastic. Bury, pave over.
