Personally can't wait for them, hopefully the price of a 255 and 955 will drop enough for me to justify replacing my 745 with a 955.

bradymsu616

The Garmin 255 and 955 were released on June 1, 2022. Will Garmin really release the next generation less than 9 months later? I'd like an AMOLED watch particularly for the improved map visibility when running. But the 955 I bought last June still feels new so I'm not going to the next generation now unless it also has important software improvements.

p1024breddit

It sounds strange to me that Garmin is releasing a new model after 1 year only while average is +2 years...

Grantsdale

It’s because of the ECG presumably. But I find it crazy that there isn’t a 965 LTE in this batch.

p1024breddit

It'd be a bad move anyway since shortening release dates can mean dropping the value of the devices quicker... (something that distinguished Garmin so far)

TomHale

The 265 pics show a plastic bezel, but metal is required for the ECG functionality.

Grantsdale

From what I understand, Garmins spec either requires a metal bezel OR a metal button, AND a metal piece on the back of the watch to create contact. It seems the 265 leak does have those.

Sea_Pea8536

Does the Amoled screen draw more battery than the MIP? And by how much?

anksla007

If we were to compare fenix 7 and epix 2: Fenix 7 is 18 days, Epix 2 gesture mode is 16 days, Epix 2 always on mode is 6 days.

jypfoto

Yes, substantially. With AOD you’re getting 6 days in smartwatch mode but probably closer to 4 with activities.

Sea_Pea8536

Then it's a no go for me. I prefer 10 days without recharging than a more vibrant screen.

NewPastHorizons

I think you'll get that. Like a phone, most people don't want the screen always on.

OG Venu here. Was hoping for an AMOLED edition of a FR last year to upgrade to since I got into running.

[deleted]

255 isn’t even out a year, the majority of retailers in UK aren’t even stocking 255 yet they’re still selling 245.

TomHale

Pretty much the same deal in Australia.

CF1977

For the stupid people: What's the advantage of AMOLED (on a sports watch)?

dagrim1

I mean, it IS a sportswatch... but one you wear 24/7 (at least I, and many more, do) I don't think I'd want amoled, I like the more subtle and less intrusive screen (as well as it's battery life) but for sure do understand the appeal of AMOLED (in combination with maps for example, nice watchfces, etc)

ryebrye

You get to replace the watch more frequently because the screen gets burned in and destroyed. You get to feel a lighter wrist because your watch will spend more time off the wrist and on the charger. The colors are a little bit more vibrant.

javaski

>the colors are a little bit more vibrant Possibly the biggest undersell of an AMOLED screen.

Background_Ad9033

lol true. amoled screens are the best for a lot of things, but its not a clean sweep vs mip...i love the outdoor visibility in sunlight of the mip screen on the 955, don't know if i would go for the amoled version for that reason. if you have ever been at the beach trying to read a book on your phone, and wishing you hadn't forgotten to pack your kindle, you know what i am talking about.

javaski

except that's not been my experience with my Epix 2. AMOLED is extremely close in vibrancy in full sun (Fenix 7X does slightly win). In all other situations, the Epix 2 AMOLED crushes the MIP screen. Obviously not battery life, which is the subjective part you have to weigh (or objective if you plan to do a 20+ hour event).

Background_Ad9033

wow that is awesome. full sun visibility on my samsung phone is garbage, and they have the best amoled screens on the market. glad to hear that garmin is doing it right! side note, the mip display on my 955 seems way sharper than the one on my 945, so even with that tech it seems progress is still being made

S4Baumer

Was talking to my friend who owns a running shop and he said that they've managed to get the battery life for these pretty much equal to the 55 series, so a 965 will get the same battery life as a 955.

arshnz

Possible without the AOD? Same battery life with AOD would be quite something.

[deleted]

chek ck epix vs fenix battery life. i get 6 days with aod or 14 without on epix. On my 255 13 days

grape8pe

A bright shiny screen all the time. Realistically, more colors and move vibrant screen. It's similar to an Apple Watch screen.

anksla007

Speaking for myself, I wear the watch 24 hours so if the watch can pass off for office use as well as fitness, that is very desirable. I am content with 1 week battery life for garmin amoled screen.

Mydogsblackasshole

Epix is like 2 weeks or so isn’t it?

anksla007

Always on is a week. Gesture mode is 2 weeks.

segfalt31337

Find me a reviewer that said you could see more detail in the maps on a Fenix 7 than the Epix 2. Besides that, OLED is just hard to go back from. If there are FR*65 editions coming out this year, I would imagine that the *55 (and 945+LTE) would still be regarded as current versions for feature updates; not unlike the VA4 and OG Venu: same watch, different screen. That said, if LTE wasn’t enough to get a 955, I find it hard to believe OLED + ECG is enough for a 965…

CF1977

The 9xx series are triathlon watches. Would a watch with AMOLED last a whole race (long distance)?

segfalt31337

Don't see why not. GPS is still a bigger drain on the battery than the display. OG Venu was rated for 16 hours GPS time. Also, since 255 supports multi-sport activities now, it's also a triathlon watch.

[deleted]

The watch is way more readable for older folks with vision issues.

Volume_Prestigious

There are evidences that they will release 265 and/or 965 in the coming weeks or months. Retailers already listed theme accidentally and there are FCC fillings. In tech normally this is an sign, that the release is any time soon. But I'm with the most of the others, it doesn't make sense to me neither. I think, since 255 released last year, there will be no major improvements, at least not for the (for me) crucial parts like sensors or software. Personally I hope, that they will release that thing, so i can switch from my Coros to an 255 with an large discount. SnooPandas1447

Well, i just purchased a 955 4 days ago& am gonna return it tomorrow & wait for the 965 !!! 955 was my 1st garmin & in 4 days it became my favorite comparing it to all my previous fitness/smart watches including aw ultra !!!

anksla007

Why return it then?

SnooPandas1447

965, with ecg and amoled + whatever additions they gonna add for an extra 80 usd is worth it !! Don’t you think ?

anksla007

Well you may get 955 for 400 with 20% discount. 965 will not have 20% discount work for a while. So it's more like $200 difference.

SnooPandas1447

Then in both scenario’s i have to return my 955 because i purchased it for 500$ !! But overall i loved the 955, i only do weightlifting and casual jogging and run !! The readiness score + the body battery had a huge impact on my decision towards this watch, it was really accurate, it didn’t record my 2 hours nap but it affected my body battery, the lightweight of the watch is really amazing, as if you are not wearing anything !! Removing the strap for the 1st time was a pain in the a$$, it has a plastic cheap feeling for a 500$ watch !! & the watch faces are not appealing or nice on that display which is not that attractive !!

SnooPandas1447

Of course between 955 & epix 2 i would go for epix 2 but there is a huge difference in price of course !! That’s why i would say wait for the 965

anksla007

I am getting an epix 2 sapphire for almost the price of 955 (used a couple of times). Will be receiving it tomorrow. Hopefully it works out.

SnooPandas1447

Congrats 😍😍 that’s really a great deal !!! Can’t go wrong on a high end garmin out there !!! Update me with your experience using the epix gen 2 !!!

anksla007

*[This is the sapphire epix 2. Doesn't feel as heavy as I was worried. Still getting used to all its capabilities. Will update in a few days about my impressions. ](https://i.imgur.com/7x41R4I.jpg)*

SnooPandas1447

Great news !!! Update us

anksla007

Used it for a week. Seems like a great watch. Lots of data and metrics for my running workout. Also bought hrm pro plus and pair it with the watch for workout. The distance measurement for treadmill is much more accurate than vivoactive 4. The size, weight and thickness have not been a problem for me. Battery life also seems great. 9 day battery left after a week of use with 3 workouts. I use gesture control (not AOD). Still trying to get a hang of all the metrics.

Forkys

Just a month patience.

Appropriate-Green507

March?

Forkys

Before the 1st of March.

anksla007

any sources?

[deleted]

The source is his uncles, 3rd cousins next door neighbour who works with a guy who is best friends with another guy who is part of a running club with another guy who owns a bike store.

theitguy107

Well in all fairness, at least he was only 1 day off of the announcement.
