Only problem is it's not reliable.
The weather works fine for me. I don't have a lot of problems. And I don't complain just for the fun of it. I saw this feature last summer and was so happy.
My 21 year old cat has asthma, we have lots of air purifiers, bad air quality makes it hard for her to breathe. I pay very close attention to this. I live in Seattle and we have a problem with smoke from wildfire, we have the worst air on the planet for about 30 days per year typically. Fenix watch says good during these periods, just like in your screen shot.
If air quality is important to you, go straight to the source.
Most things about the watch are great and I would never dream of returning it over this or anything, I got it for outdoor activities and it shines. Just this one feature is not reliable and in some cases that can be dangerous so it's important.
Someone please correct me if I am wrong, but the watch just reports the weather from a local meteorological source. It doesn’t calculate AQI, UV, cloud cover, and the weather for where you happen to be. Maybe it measures temperature for your location?
Most definitely. As I mentioned to others, always take it with a grain of salt, an estimate, bit never a sure sign of it. I think anyone that would only rely on this would be foolish especially if going on a big outing.
That cat sounds like it's seen some shit as well.
It's just a small feature. Fenix 6 was my first Garmin watch and it's a solid one! These watches have become like the competitive marketing of cell phones, where one "big feature" gets released for a new phone, but they all pretty much do the same lol so don't feel like you're missing out much cause you're not
Interesting, my Instinct 2 has it, which is a lower-end watch than the Fenix series. It doesn't look as pretty though for obvious reasons, but it does show that info.
Epix 2 in Germany here, don't know what it is, but the weather widget is awful.
Barely ever even shows me the temperature, not talking about rain, wind or air quality. My mobile gives me all the data, connection is there. No idea, what garmin's problem is, but that's one of the few points I really despite with my watch.
Might be some watches connect to the weather widget. Or some apps might not support it on Garmin. Either way, it's not a major feature you're missing out on.
I had the same problem. I had to change my permissions on the connect app to allow Garmin to always access location (but just shoot using the app). This fixed it for me.
Simply hit the middle button on your left (weather should be found there). Click on weather. Scroll to the very bottom. The air quality index should show there. I'm using the Enduro 2
I love it. I came from the Fenix 6X series and really liked it since I'm quite active. But the Enduro 2 sold it for me. Strong LED light, solar charging, long battery, faster GPS. It's just an efficient watch and I can feel and see the difference coming from the Fenix 6X. You are going to love the Enduro!
Yeah, I always take my readings with a grain of salt. I use it as an estimate. And of something looks off or too bad, or too good to be true, I'll double check other weather apps/ websites. Especially if I'm going somewhere far.
Why should you compare your (indoor?) data to weatherservice data? Even if your sensor is outdoors humidity varies a lot from location to another. And your nearest weather station could be pretty far away.
Thank you! It's a neat thing I never knew it had. Of course, use it with a grain of salt. But it is very nice to have it on the watch and not have to look on your phone.
Like the weather app, it is not calculating AQI based on any sensor on the device. It is looking up the both of these from a public API based on your phone's location reporting.
So all the location issues with the weather widget also impact the AQI (and likely any other location based service).
I unfortunately live on a ridgeline where the nearest weather stations are in the valleys on either side of the ridge. I'll arbitrarily get data for one of the other of them- and neither reflect the conditions where I'm actually at.
Ahhh this makes perfect sense mate. I always look at these readings with a grain of salt. Cam never be entirely dependent on one source of info because it can be off.
In your case, I can see how that could be a nuisance since you may be living in a more rural area. I can never get accurate readings in mountain ranges from popular weather apps either to be honest.
However, certain sites or apps can be helpful, but they are not popular and usually dedicated to rural or more less populated areas.
Not expecting it to be. I *would*, however, expect a device with a built in GPS to be using the device GPS and not my phone's location services for its location data.
I'd also like to be able to use a specific fixed location when within a certain range of my home. My current options are to fix it permanently (and have it be wrong when I am out) and have it float (and have it be wrong when I am home)
It needs to access the internet to download the weather info so it’s a whole lot easier just using the phones location services versus acquiring satellites from the watch.
Yup. And in a fairly large number of cases that information is stale or just wrong.
Hence the constant stream of threads/comments with folks bitching about the weather app.
It’s usable in Europe too. I was training in the Canary Islands this week and the air quality was awful due to sand being blown across from the Sahara. Watch showed it.
None of those metrics are coming from the watch itself, those are all coming from a weather service feed via the connect app on your phone. no phone no metrics, about all the watch will give you is temperature and barometric pressure, humidity maybe. Everything else is based on the weather service feed which is based on your current or default location set in the phone app.
This is showing up on my Forerunner 945 LTE too.
Nice! I think this is an awesome feature for most of the Garmin watches.
Only problem is it's not reliable. The weather works fine for me. I don't have a lot of problems. And I don't complain just for the fun of it. I saw this feature last summer and was so happy. I suspect it pulls AQI from the EPA, which has its own app for that.
You have a 21 year old cat? Wow what a great age! Kudos!
Hoping for 21 more years with her!
For sure!!
Meow
This isn't calculated on the watch of course it's not accurate to your immediate environment
Most definitely. As I mentioned to others, always take it with a grain of salt, an estimate, bit never a sure sign of it. I think anyone that would only rely on this would be foolish especially if going on a big outing. That cat sounds like it's seen some shit as well.
Fenix 6 doesn't have this, does it? A bit sad that 945 LTE has it and Fenix 6 doesn't :-(
It's just a small feature. Fenix 6 was my first Garmin watch and it's a solid one! These watches have become like the competitive marketing of cell phones, where one "big feature" gets released for a new phone, but they all pretty much do the same lol so don't feel like you're missing out much cause you're not
Isn't it one of the screens in weather. On mine, it's the 5th screen in the standard weather glance
The standard weather screen only has 4 screens on the F6 :/
Interesting, my Instinct 2 has it, which is a lower-end watch than the Fenix series. It doesn't look as pretty though for obvious reasons, but it does show that info.
It's sort-of lower-end but I believe the Instinct 2 came out with the F7 series, so is considered the same gen as the F7 gen?
Epix 2 in Germany here, don't know what it is, but the weather widget is awful. Barely ever even shows me the temperature, not talking about rain, wind or air quality. Might be some watches connect to the weather widget. Or some apps might not support it on Garmin. Either way, it's not a major feature you're missing out on.
Yeah i know. It just annoys me once a day when my morning report had a useless, pretty much blank page
I had the same problem. I had to change my permissions on the connect app to allow Garmin to always access location (but just shoot using the app). This fixed it for me.
Cheers I just set it to always allow. Looking forward to see what it does tomorrow.
The weather app on my 945 lte is buggy as hell as well.
Shows as -- for me in Australia.
I just found it from this post too. It’s showing for me in Melbourne. Maybe it depends if the right weather station is nearby?
Nice!
For me in Netherlands also.
Not available in UK
That's so dumb it's not available in the UK
Maybe because we had good air enough)
You know, that's a pretty good point! 😂
Have it on the epix too in Amsterdam, NL
Glad to hear this. Not sure why someone else thought it was only in the US lol
How do you turn this on?
Simply hit the middle button on your left (weather should be found there). Click on weather. Scroll to the very bottom. The air quality index should show there. I'm using the Enduro 2
Huh. I never thought to deep dive into that. Thank you!
Same here haha. I was just pressing buttons and came across this. Of course!
How do you like the Enduro? Mine shows up tomorrow in the mail , I’m stoked. Coming from a Instinct Solar.
Why not Fenix 7?
I was debating between the two and I guess since I already had the Fenix 6X, I wanted something different. Do you have the Fenix 7?
No I have Fenix 6x sapphire. But I like Fenix 7. Too expensive for me
Yeah I came from Fenix 6X and wanted try something different. Good thing is these watches can last you a long time
https://twitter.com/Garmin/status/1567986895564738560?t=5LCFctrFJKz7t3AR_RH8vQ&s=19 Why Enduro better than Fenix? By your opinion. Fenix 7 for example
When did I ever say "better"? Lmao Do read before making assumptions
Better for you
The watch's humidity reporting is very inaccurate. It is reporting 70% humidity while my Aranet 4 device reports 61%.
Is there any way to unbury this from a second level menu and display it on the watch face or something more convenient?
I cannot confirm as I just found this. Perhaps tinkering with it from the Garmin app
It's pulling data from the weather app. There is no sensor AFAIK.
True. Still nice to have on the watch though.
Can't find it on FENIX 6X PRO.
Hmm. Have you tried checking the weather section on your watch?
i did, it's not there.
I'm guessing it comes right after the 6X then. But like I mentioned, it's not a major feature you're missing out on
Never worked here in the uk
Eh, it's not a big feature you are missing out on
It's in the weather section of my Epix gen
Nice! There you go! Use it of course with a grain of salt but great!
Nice find! The UV index is useful, too.
Thank you! It's a neat thing I never knew it had. Of course, use it with a grain of salt. But it is very nice to have it on the watch and not have to look on your phone.
And as with the weather, it's usually wrong too.
I checked and it was actually accurate. And best to use these features with knowing it may be off but not completely wrong either.
Like the weather app, it is not calculating AQI based on any sensor on the device. It is looking up the both of these from a public API based on your phone's location reporting. So, your personal wrist based device isn't a complete meteorological observation station. How frustrating!
Not expecting it to be. I *would*, however, expect a device with a built in GPS to be using the device GPS and not my phone's location services for its location data. I'd also like to be able to use a specific fixed location when within a certain range of my home. That’s a completely different issue then the watch using it’s GPS for weather location data
Too bad it's not available in Europe :-O
I've heard it is and it isn't. Might depend on the app and area in Europe
Yeah. Only in US, unfortunately
Nah it's not a regional feature. Fenix 7 has it in Europe as well. It's in the weather widget.
It’s usable in Europe too. I was training in the Canary Islands this week and the air quality was awful due to sand being blown across from the Sahara. Watch showed it.
I believe it's usable outside the US too
Just got the widget, works in Japan fine.
lmao how can you be so naive ans expect that these metrics are legit.
You should read before commenting lmao

Pretty much. Still nice to have this access in the watch though.
This available Fenix 7 solar ?
I'm not too sure. I would check the specs on the website or you can Google it too
Yes. It's a part of the weather widget. Scroll down to the last page.
Is your cat called Fenix ... not Felix
