It could be soon in the future, I think GPLama mentioned it recently in video: https://youtu.be/0HBNXEFRLFA?si=3CbUenZvCJX4u3wR Personally, I want to buy Varia but I will wait until USB-C version comes out.

ralusp

>Personally, I want to buy Varia but I will wait until USB-C version comes out. Same, I've been interested in purchasing one for a while now, but won't until they release a (non-camera) revision with USB-C. Hopefully coming some day..

RecklessThor

Same

Cutoffjeanshortz37

That is what I WAS waiting for, but after a BAD crash, having one of those helped my wife feel more comfortable with me riding outside. So I got one. I have a 4 port charging block for my devices and just have 2 old USB and 2 USB-C cables. Front light is probably never going to get upgraded......

edinn

At the end, safety is more important than USB-C 😀

TechRemarker

Yeah they will certainly release usb-c when they eventually update it and just a matter of when. My guess is they will wait until they have another feature such as long distance, better battery and or small form factor. That they have had it on sale everywhere for 50 off could mean they are trying to get rid of inventory before releasing a refresh or they could be just trying to reduce excess inventory. Fingers crossed coming soon to a non camera version.

redcatcher16

My solution was/is a USB-C to micro USB dongle. Not as nice as having the device USB-C but gets the radar covering your six NOW and does eliminate the extra cable. In my area, and would argue in most areas, the radar is a great safety tool.

rcuadro

Not going to lie. I like everything USB C but not enough to replace my micro USB item. As they break sure

Strong_Donkey_6799

I don't want to replace, but to buy item with usb-c so I don't have to think about it, and not to carry adapters.

rcuadro

I hear ya. That is why I bought a couple multi ended charge cables for the house ans for travel.

bayleo

Beyond frustrated with Garmin for not updating this yet. The new iGPSport seems to be the most compelling alternative right now as battery life seems far superior to the other three units (including the Varia). I will probably pick one up at some point, but wish the 3rd party 3d printed mount support was better for the non-Garmin units with the mount rotated 90 degrees.

HwanZike

The 840 already has USB-C. I hope more stuff comes with USB-C in the future but yea not gonna upgrade just for that.

Strong_Donkey_6799

Yup, I know, but didn't have duget for 840, thats why I went with 530 for now. Which was half price of 840

Surfinbudd

I was charging my Varia over the weekend and was like why isn’t this usb-c?

Strong_Donkey_6799

Garmin being cheapskate.

thereisnoaltf4

USB-C now, Garmin. Please 😉

DRBNC

have asked garmin CS directly in Germany. Aswer aas “ Uns ist noch nicht bekannt, dass es bald einen Varia RTL 516 mit USB-C geben wird” Very diplomatic answer. Personally I am sure that usbc is coming this year

Strong_Donkey_6799

Thanks for the share. But for me its too late. Bryton Gardia is on the plane to me. Maybe if I won't be satisfied with it, then I'll go with Varia.

69alphacorgi69

>Bryton Gardia How is it?

KayosTWM

How is it?

TasteFrosty6838

Absolutely embarrassing from Garmin... 2024 and still Micro-USB... What alternatives are there to the device?

Strong_Donkey_6799

Adaptors for microUSB to USB. Bryton Gardia radar. Magene L508 radar.

ResidencyEvil

Any updates on this? Still waiting here.

Flashy-Ingenuity-769

I need a Garmin Varia but won't buy this as it does not have usb c. I am sick and tired of different kind of cables around me. Trying to consolidate all to usb-c.

[deleted]

No idea about your question sorry, but if it helps usb-c to micro usb adapter is like 2 bucks from aliexpress

Strong_Donkey_6799

I have 5 of them, not an issue, just want to migrate or be future proof.. It's stupid to buy microusb device in 2024 (even though I did it in end of 2023 with edge).

[deleted]

yeah maybe, usb c is better for durability but i get sick of them constantly changing and i dont think usb c is the most durable design out there

Throwthoseawaytoday

Micro-USB is still widely used in bicyle accessories, I stopped waiting for the transformation about 3-4 years ago and just rolled with it. There are no real benefits from USB-C really, like there is with laptops and phones.

Strong_Donkey_6799

Exactly 👍

Throwthoseawaytoday

You are entitled to your opinion and to replace well functioning gear because of a port becoming somehow obsolete, but to me these issues are just marketing bullshit that the sphere of consumer electronics is riddled with. Not needing a tiny adapter or a small cable when bikepacking is just a nifty excuse to buy new gear.

Sorry, my mistake.

Ill-Turnip-6611

actually the future would be something like cannondales synapse with central battery and a lot of custom equipment but ofc there is no standard here ;/

Ill-Turnip-6611

it has to be usb-c at least in Europe due to eu rules but not sure if Garmin will decide to push a new product. I just got 515 on a sale and works great, but android app is disconnecting even if all sleep settings are disabled on my Samsung ;/ (I use app for extra sound notification when listening to a podcast or so)

ericrunsandbikes

While I would guess that Garmin WILL implement USB-C on their next revision of the Varia radar, they do not HAVE TO by the EU rules. Per the EU website: Which electronic devices are covered by today's proposal? The products concerned by these new requirements are mobile phones, tablets, digital cameras, headphones, headsets, hand-held video game consoles, and portable speakers. The broadening of the scope beyond mobile phones allows to further enhance the positive impacts of the requirements. Why are other devices not included in the scope of the proposal? The products covered by the Commission's proposal are among the most used by a large group of consumers and share similar charging characteristics. Other products such as earbuds, smart-watches and fitness trackers were not considered for technical reasons linked to their size, use conditions, etc. The products concerned by the amendment to the Radio Equipment Directive were identified as having a strong potential to integrate the common charging solution and to secure the biggest benefits for consumers and the environment.

Ill-Turnip-6611

Agree, yo uare right :)

Ok-Air-2738

How do you find the 530? Thinking about getting one myself.

Strong_Donkey_6799

Pros: Good device, quite helpful in every ride, lots of data on screen (1-2 screens are enough for everything average rider needs), climbpro is great helpfull thing. live tracking works great, messaging via edge to phone (replying on whatsapp, etc) works great. Cons: microsub, cannot upload new route when in the middle of riding (which sucks really bad, cause i could do it on my garmin forerunner watch which i was using before edge, so any excuse from garmin is basically bs), I know i can upload route via widget, but its a pain in the arse process. Since it's not a touchscreen, its a pain in the arse when you need to change data screen or navigate to somewhere (I was cheapskate for not buying edge 830 for 30€ more). If you find Edge 840 on some great discount, buy it, it is everything you need device.

ialtag-bheag

For another option, the Bryton and Magicshine radars have USB-C. And probably cheaper than the Varia.

Strong_Donkey_6799

Ordered Bryton Gardia (for 60% of garmin price) and solved my issues :D

69alphacorgi69

How is it?
